what’s this about the “weak link” in mcr who’s dragging his feet? am i missing something? genuinely curious.
to me it’s clear that it’s gerard that makes the band’s future uncertain. look at the first band breakup, frank was incredibly distraught at the loss of the band and wasn’t even told about the band’s breakup announcement- they literally caught him by surprise which is a whole other convo. he didn’t want it and was powerless to stop it. mikey was going through a hard time but has stated in an interview that the band breakup made everything worse. during the band breakup he went through a divorce, a smear campaign and nearly died of an overdose. the breakup actually was not in his best interest, it made his life more unstable when he need help and some sort of rock in his life. ray loves playing and is incredibly mentally stable. he never really moved on from mcr- a solo album and a few collabs here and there. mcr really is his career. now look back at gerard. he relapsed - much worse then was stated- and was the one saying shit like “break the band or break me”. life is complicated and his mental health really is a problem- but realistically the band break up was because/for him. since that breakup and reunion somethings have changed somethings haven’t. mikey has overcome so many of his demons and is stronger than ever - his recent fender interview was so wonderful to read. he is at his strongest and can actually enjoy playing in mcr live. he has a family who supports him greatly. ray continues to be stable and loves playing with mcr. frank has been fighting tooth and nail for the band to get back together. and his accident definitely played a role in the band getting back together. he fucking loves the band and making music and playing it live. he was beaming in the europe shows, and can’t sit still - if mcr won’t tour he will find a band that will. his enthusiasm was dropping at the last few mcr shows because it seems something was going on. but those three guys are solid. and that leaves gerard. whose mental health issues really have been understated, and he will be dealing with it for the rest of his life. part of it is he always wants to quit - he was successful with mcr because they convinced him to see it through. but he’s still the one who pulled the trigger in the end. and now we know more about his wife, who is an incredibly jealous and manipulative person who not only encourages him to quit but doesn’t like when he’s outside of her influence. in hindsight, she probably played a role in the break up. i will add one of her art pieces she made before the band breakup.
i guess the tldr is gerard has severe mental health issues, likes to quit and is married to someone who encourages that. the other three members are in good places and would love to continue the band. but they won’t continue without him not only because he is the vocalist but because they love him despite the hell he puts them through.

i wonder who initially came up with the concept of doing old man makeup and prosthetics. the social commentary is very gerard i think especially with the revenge outfits. but the way frank was playing it up and the fact that frank is always talking about how he's So Old Now this has his sense of humor all over it
i think it was a frank and gerard collab yes it does sound like gerard but frank was playing every ounce he had into that performance which leads me to believe at least some of it was his idea. maybe gerard thougt of the old man makeup and then frank wazs like ohhh shitiiiiiit we should wear out old revenge uniforms....and then they tot like really into the planning of it all

hi. thought i would share some more of my recent listening. it's all metal sorry:
slaves to sirens' terminal leeches. ok this is an all women, lebanese thrash/death metal band and they fuck so hard the ep is only 19 minutes if you give any of my metal recs a chance let it be this one
black death's self-titled album. this is a killer classic metal band a friend recommended me. very old-school sound, amazing riffs, super fun give this underappreciated band full of black musicians a listen
devil master's satan spits on the children of the light. now here's some really fun shit, I guess it would be death 'n roll? really good mix of death metal with some punk/rock stylings. plus gerard had it on his end of year playlist so. you can't go wrong.
may our chambers be full collab btw emma ruth rundle (whose fantastic) and thou. super sludgy/doomy instrumental with some really amazing vocals, everything about this is wonderful
also been dipping my toes into pupil slicer, potion, potentiam, princess pang (thank u barry 💚), blaakyum, and blood ceremony

As of Now I'm Down Straight Up
by MusicalSense
Summary
"He’s on his back again and this time he’s not looking at the sky; he’s looking right into the surprisingly blue eyes of Bert McCracken who just chokeslammed him into the ground and is now standing above him with his feet planted left and right of Gerard’s hips." Hallelujah.
In this AU Bert and Gerard didn't meet prior to warped tour and neither Three Cheers nor In Love And Death are out yet so technically it should be set in 2003, but like, the timelines don't really matter for this one. Inspired by an interview with MCR where Gerard talked about Bert chokeslamming a kid who got up on stage during their set.
There’s blood in Gerard’s mouth and he’s not sure if it’s his own. He runs the tip of his tongue over his aching front teeth and turns around to see if whoever headbutted him got away unscathed. He definitely felt his teeth slice through… something, which is kind of worrying since they are freakishly small and that means that he had a mouthful of some stranger which is… all a little unsanitary, isn’t it? A guy with a bloody nose bumps into him and Gerard gets a face full of Eau de Sweaty Armpit. He chokes a little and ducks and shoves – his go-to move in the pit – to keep Tall and Sweaty at a safe distance and then brushes his greasy hair out of his face. He’s standing at the edge of the mosh pit at Warped, probably too close to the speakers given his bad ear, but right now he does not care even in the slightest. He can feel each beat of the kick drum resonating in his bones and his heart is racing along with the music as the song crescendos and comes to a crashing, slightly off-key end. He will definitely have to incorporate something like that into their next record, he thinks.
“The next song is called ‘A Box Full Of Sharp Objects’.” Announces Bert McCracken. He looks good today, Gerard thinks. Really good. Sure, he’s just as sweaty as Gerard is, but the way his wet tangled hair looks with the red makeup smudges on his cheek and the manic glint in his eyes… Gerard gulps. Perhaps he does have a thing for boys who look like they would beat him up without hesitating and make out with him afterwards.
“Marry me!” Tall and Sweaty hollers next to him with the fervor and timbre of a frat bro after his sixth bear of the night. Gerard winces. Yeah, his hearing is definitely not going to improve anytime soon. Maybe he should start wearing the second in ear monitor too; he thinks he might be developing a tinnitus.
“Who, me?” Bert asks with wide eyes and an even wider grin on his face. He presses a hand to his chest in mock-surprise. Gerard’s not entirely sure but he thinks Bert’s wearing white nail polish on the left and black on the right hand. He wonders if it’s a Queen reference.
“Fuck yeah!” Tall and Sweaty yells. Gerard twitches. How did that guy even manage to keep his baseball cap in the pit? He’s pretty sure that he himself lost one or two pins and maybe his belt to the crowd.
Bert wags his eyebrows. “We’ll see about that later.” He turns to his bassist and giggles in that weird high pitched way of his. “Looks like I’ve got a date tonight, Jepha.”
Fuck. Fucking fuck. Why can’t Gerard be a sweaty frat bro? Sure, his Gran always told him to worry less and just ask for things because really, what could happen besides him getting rejected? But somehow he didn’t think that her advice would be applicable in this situation and yet… Oh god, she’d be laughing so hard if she could see him right now, thrashing wildly with the crowd at a The Used show mere hours before he had to be on stage himself just because he thought the singer was kind of cute and wanted to check him out live. The band launches into the next song, kicking Gerard back into action. He shakes his head a little and allows himself a small smile. So what if he has a tiny man-crush on another singer, he can still have a good time. He looks around quickly to check for people who look like they wouldn’t appreciate him throwing himself in their midst and when he doesn’t find any, he dives straight back into the pit.
God, he loves this so fucking much. The hot press of bodies around him, the elbows connecting with his ribs, even the feeling of sweaty skin sticking and unsticking from his. For a while he loses himself in the push and pull of it, careful to keep his head down so he doesn’t get hit in the face. Somehow he seems to be just the right height for that, not big enough to really stand his ground and not quite small enough to weave through the crowd like Frank does either. He feels someone pulling on the white stage shirt he’s wearing because it was the only semi-clean thing in his wardrobe after touring for a while. Somehow his stage clothes are always taken care of while his normal t shirts decompose in a smelly pile in a corner of their bus. Right now though, his last good shirt is dotted with small red blood splatters and he briefly worries about the state of his face which seems to be one big dull ache right now. He really hopes that the blood isn’t his; having to sing with a broken nose would suck balls.
His gaze connects with a short-ish dude with a bloody bitemark on his jaw and a bright grin. For a split second Gerard recognizes him as the person whose face he hit his teeth on but then he’s being hoisted up and carried on top of the crowd. He takes in a gasping breath and blinks up at the almost cartoonishly blue sky for a few moments. Sure, he’s crowdsurfed before, but usually inside smaller clubs and never at Warped where the audience looks like a boiling kettle full of rage and drunk scene kids. Maybe he should reconsider though, he thinks idly as he’s being carried away from the pit. Someone’s jewelry catches on his hair and the buttons of his shirt and he tries to keep his feet still so he doesn’t kick anyone in the head and there’s sky around him and the wavelike movement of the crowd under him, and he thinks maybe this is what it feels like to drift in the ocean during a storm, and then he’s being hoisted on stage.
‘Oh fuck’ He thinks. “Oh fuck.” He says. While no one’s technically going to kick him out for it he is technically also not supposed to be here and it’s taken him too long already; he should be jumping back right now; he’s seen other people do it and they always got away with it as long as they didn’t disturb the set, and he turns around and then someone grabs his throat and slams him to the ground and. Holy Shit.
He’s on his back again and this time he’s not looking at the sky; he’s looking right into the surprisingly blue eyes of Bert McCracken who just chokeslammed him into the ground and is now standing above him with his feet planted left and right of Gerard’s hips.
Actually, maybe he hit his head harder than he thought. He’s feeling a little faint right now. Bert’s hand is still around his throat. Gerard tries to swallow and chokes on his spit. He feels his pulse beating away frantically, even faster than the music now, and he wonders if Bert can feel it. The moment seems to stretch like the string of a bow being pulled back and Gerard worries that if he makes one wrong move he’s going to make it snap and hit him in the face.
Fucking hell. He’s going to die here. Above him Bert grins with all of his teeth and mouths along to the final chorus as the crowd goes wild. He locks eyes with Gerard and winks and then he. He licks his hand, from palm to fingertips, and wipes it on Gerard’s face and suddenly he’s painfully hard in his jeans. There’s sweat dripping down from Bert’s hair and his teeth still ache and he still can’t breathe properly and he thinks he just fell in love. He’s dying but man, what a way to go.
Bert, who doesn’t seem to have picked up on Gerard’s epiphany, gets up from his crouch and gets back to performing and after a second Gerard picks himself back up and leaps into the crowd before one of the security guys can usher him down and he still feels like he’s floating.
He doesn’t get back up on stage; it’s not like he could ask Bert for his number in the middle of a concert, right? Right. They’re either going to meet backstage or maybe they’re going to collab or, or, maybe they will never see each other again (‘Shut the fuck up Gerard you’re literally touring together’ His logical side tells him) but even if that’s the case, so what? It’s not like he just met the love of his life or anything. Ha.
He might be panicking a little.
Later that day, before he had time to change out of his blood splattered clothes (He thinks he might just keep them for the show, the red adds a certain element to the whole look…), he’s just wandering around when he comes across one of the billboards showing messages from fans and really just anyone who submits something via text message.
‘MCR rox my soxx’ He reads and smiles. Next up is a longer message. ‘Bleeding dude uknowho I choked meet me @10 bhind mainstg luv bert’.
Oh. Okay then. That’s definitely him, right? Gerard grins and touches the bruises starting to form on his neck. It seems like Bert wasn’t the only one who left an impression.

1, 6 & 15 for Lúcio and 8 & 12 for widowmaker?
Lúcio
1. Holiday headcanon: Lúcio is one of those people who simultaneously bemoans the commodification of and consumerism associated with holidays and goes all in on every single one that he can, including those he didn’t celebrate before but found out his teammates do.
6. Hugging headcanon: I don’t know why this is, like I can’t give you a solid rationale for it, but I imagine he’s that person who gives really awkward but definitely very earnest hugs. Like maybe it’s a little too enthusiastic, or he’s a little anxious because he’s not sure you would like a hug, or both because he’s gotten feedback that his enthusiasm can be a little overbearing sometimes, but he very much enjoys giving them.
15. Singing headcanon: He’s got a pleasant enough voice and definitely hums along with his headphones on and probably sings in the shower, but singing professionally is definitely not part of his music performances. Like he can carry a tune, and he likes it, but he’s not going to fool himself into thinking he’s A Singer. When it comes to that, he’d rather collab with someone who’s really great at it than do it himself.
Widowmaker
8. Sex headcanon: Oh gosh, I’m not even sure I have one. I get so hung up on the “brainwashed” thing still. I imagine it would be very intense though, even pre-brainwashing. And she’d be very romantic about it.
12. Jewelry headcanon: Obviously when she’s in the field, jewelry is a no-go, and she’s a practical gal. But she absolutely owns a ton of it – although I wonder now if Talon would let her keep the ones that were gifts from Gerard? Anyway this is a woman who knows how to accessorize and will do so at any given opportunity. She has very strong opinions about how much jewelry is too gaudy and how much is not enough. She probably goes classic Coco Chanel here: drapes herself in jewels and then removes at least one piece before she leaves.
Ask me about my head canons?

My Final Post on Anthony*
*until he gets his shit together
So, as you all may or may not remember, I made A POST after Anthony’s atrocious April Fools day video claiming that I was DONE with Anthony... and I was... but not fully. While I did unsub from his channel (which was long overdue) I still followed him on Instagram and Twitter and actually left my tweet notifications on for him. I also answered SEVERAL other questions about Anthony through my inbox. However, this post is the last time I am mentioning Anthony on this blog as an independent creator.*
This post is nothing more than one big ass critique of Anthony and his content. This is my last shot at trying to reach out to Anthony to make some changes because after this, I’m done.* I WANT him and his channel to succeed so bad that seeing him fail like this and knowing that it’s his fault makes me sick. This post will show you why me and so many others are SO angry and will show you that Anthony knows what he’s doing, but for some reason continues to ignore us while he quietly loses subs and followers by the THOUSANDS monthly in the background. I CARE about Anthony and WANT him to succeed. That’s why I’m making this post. To try and help him (if he’ll listen) and show people that he is MUCH MORE than the content he’s putting out. However, if he doesn’t care, then I can’t care anymore. LAST SHOT!
Feel free to send this link to him through Twitter if you have the balls (cause I sure as hell don’t)! I WANT him to see it.
Buckle up, kiddo’s! It’s a long one!
Anthony’s content changes at the drop of a hat. I’ve honestly seen more consistency out of a fucking camelaian. You CANNOT be inconsistent on YouTube if you hope to succeed. Sure, changing things up once in a while isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but changing every few months just pander to some people is channel suicide. It may get you a couple of extra views at first, but you will lose the audience you already had because you are no longer who they subbed to in the first place.
When he first left S*osh, I think his plan to build an audience was to ride over most of the subs he had from S*osh while also collabing with a few well known solo creators to gain attention from people who didn’t watch S*osh. Not a bad plan to start off with, however he most likely did not gain as many S*osh subs as he thought he was going to, so he panicked and started using the dirtiest tricks in the book to get seen such as clickbait and LOADS of collabs as seen below which was the wrong response. The correct response was just to continue with what YOU wanted to make while also finding a balance with videos WE wanted to see and eventually the subs would have followed because they liked who YOU were... but he did not do this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the collab phase (which lasted about three months), I believe he tried to move on with videos he wanted to make which was the videos where he portrays a socially inept character. This within itself IS NOT the issue, it’s HOW he went about it. When creating a character persona separate from yourself, it’s important to let the audience know when you’re the character and when you’re you. You don’t have to come flat out and be like: “Yo, I’m Anthony today guys!” you can easily do this by giving your character a name or by SEPARATING how YOU act and how your CHARACTER acts. It’s just enough context clues for your audience to figure it out. Anthony fails at this. When your audience doesn’t see the character line, they get confused and wonder why the hell you’re acting so foolish. Most don’t get it. It makes the line even more blurry when you market a channel and social media as YOU and instead just use it as another outlet for your character or for promotion of said character. Newcomers have no line to see and it makes it almost impossible for the average viewer to get what you’re doing. You just look like an idiot to them... which most won’t subscribe to.
This is why, I believe, his videos without another popular creator or subject in the title barely breaks 100k which is MUCH lower than he probably anticipated which, again, caused him to panic and go back to clickbait. His titles ARE NOT creative and is using basic psychology to draw people in weather he realises it or not. Using titles like “I’M SORRY!”, “COUPLE GETS THEIR TEST RESULTS!” and “THE REAL REASON WHY I LEFT S*OSH!” makes you wonder. Why is he sorry? What did he do? What test? What test did they take? What’s the real reason? Our brains naturally want to complete things, so the average viewer will click on it because they HAVE TO KNOW by the nature of their brain. In my personal opinion, it is a DISGUSTING tatic of trying to get an audience. If you rely on clickbait, it shows me that you’re either:
A) Uneducated with the YouTube algorithm and don’t know a better way...
Except Anthony DOES know a better way and is well educated about the algorithm. How do I know? Well, in THIS episode of Game Theory, MatPat mentions that he worked with Smosh (AKA: Ian and Anthony) to help them with their audience. He’s also mentioned working with them several other times in other meta theories that he has done. So Anthony:
B) Understands how to properly build an audience and is WELL educated with the algorithm, but instead uses the knowledge to manipulate people into subbing instead of showing them that he is deserving of their sub.
While collabling and clickbait CAN help reach out to more people who would otherwise not see your channel, COMPLETELY relying on it is just PURE LAZINESS. I can understand using those tactics like once a month or further apart, but every other video!? If you want to succeed, you have to maintain a BALANCE between what people want to see and what you want to make. Just flat out relying on the algorithm to build your audience for you isn’t going to get you very far.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As gross as these tricks are, it didn’t boost him too much. He’s gaining in views, but his sub count is unsteady. The appropriate response to this is to continue doing what you were doing but start making subtle changes to help draw a character line and to subtly help the average viewer get your humor by dumbing it down a bit. I personally don’t think his humour is funny. The timing is TOO LONG and there’s no base for his joke which leave many seeking out Google to get the punchline. Dumbing down the humor and finding a balance between your normal humor will help bring in more average viewers. Also finding a balance between manipulative tactics and YOUR OWN content would also be a WONDERFUL response. This will in turn eventually grow your subcount to where you don’t even have to manipulate people into watching your content or subbing to you. My channel is practically dead and even I know that you can’t pull the BS that’s he’s pulling and make money off of it to pay for your fancy house that Gerard Way used to own.
To this very day, his sub count is EXTREMELY unsteady. According to his SOCIAL BLADE, while he is gaining a little subs, he’s losing a lot too. He’ll go for about a week or two gaining anywhere from 50 to 300 new subs a day to losing 100-400 a day for a solid 4-7 days.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s not a steady a count that you see with most successful channels. For example, many consider S*osh to be dead now, but their Social Blade tells a TOTALLY different story.
Tumblr media
While not that impressive, at least it’s STEADY. They gain an average of 1,500 a day with only one bad day within a two week time span. THEY’RE GROWING... not fast, but still growing.
Between April 29th to May 8th, Anthony gained 1,484 subs, but between May 9th to May 14th, he LOST 1,913 which means that even on his good days, he ends up losing them later on during his bad weeks which isn’t great if you’re hoping to build an audience. He’s not growing... wonder why, guys?
THIS is why we’re angry at Anthony. We KNOW he’s better than riding off of the algorithm. He is a genuinely funny guy when TRIES to be, but all this pandering bull shit is pushing people away from him. He thinks it’s getting more views and subs, but it’s not. In fact, his Twitter and Instagram is FAR worse than his channel.
His TWITTER only had ONE good day in a two week time frame.
Tumblr media
His INSTAGRAM is worse, losing an average of 600 a day and 19,000 within a month.
Tumblr media
Weather you agree with me or not, numbers don’t lie and it’s CLEAR that he is doing something wrong to be losing so many followers and subs. Also, that “SUPER HILARIOUS” 4/20 JOKE he made the other day on Twitter with who he’s following, yeah he did that on purpose just to make a weed “joke.” It’s equivalent to your 10-year-old brother who just found a YouTube playlist full of MLG meme comps.
Don’t believe me? CHECK IT.
Tumblr media
The dates even line up.
He keeps using these minuliptive techniques and won’t even TRY to make regular content and his numbers are suffering for it. For someone who’s obsessed with them, he sure doesn’t seem to want to build them.
Also, this isn’t about me being upset with his content. As long as he’s happy, I don’t care what he makes AS LONG as it lives up to his potential. IT DOESN’T. It doesn’t even come CLOSE to what he’s capable of. He could EASILY be one of the top YouTube channels if he gave a damn and TIRED. He’s not trying, HE’S MANIPULATING and it’s ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE for someone who once shone brighter than the sun not just to me, but everyone else. This new channel and “Anthony’s” behavior his A MESS and a disaster waiting to happen. You may have your mindless subs who buy your poorly made merchandise fooled, but you don’t have me fooled. If you have ANY hope of wanting to pay for your fancy house, bills, or anything you want, YOU BETTER start making some changes because you ARE GOING TO FALL eventually. You can’t keep running from who you are. Eventually, you will grow tired of trying to be someone you’re not and when you do, the people you tried so hard to please will be gone. You’ve already lost me who’s been nothing but loyal to you and Ian for over four years... who’s next?
I’m FUCKING COMPLETELY DONE!!!!!!!*

MSI’S JIMMY URINE ANNOUNCES SOLO LP FEATURING GERARD WAY AND…ROBOTS?

Jason Pettigrew  August 13, 2018
“I wanted it to sound as if Depeche Mode hired J Dilla and DJ Premier to drop loops while Frank Zappa produced—and then I came in and shit all over it.” So says James Euringeraka Little Jimmy Urine of ADD-addled electro-rockers Mindless Self Indulgence when asked to describe his new solo album under the handle Euringer, featuring cameos from folks such as Gerard Way, System Of A Down’s Serj Tankian, Grimes and Chantal Claret.
(Read more: Jimmy Urine talks MSI, Guardians Of The Galaxy role and new album.)
The album—slated for release Oct. 19 by Metropolis Records—is the beginning of a whole new chapter for the multi-instrumentalist and programmer. After visiting New Zealand a few times in the past, Euringer and his wife, Claret, decided to leave their Los Angeles home and move to the other side of the world.
“I totally think New Zealand is the most awesome place in the world,” he says. “It’s like a combination of San Francisco, New York City and Middle Earth. And I’ve always wanted to live in Middle Earth.”
“We loved [New Zealand] when Obama was president, but now we love it more since it synced up with the world turning to shit!,” he continues. “Awesome! We’re ahead of the curve!’”
Moving is one big step for a whole new reboot. While his previous album The Secret Cinematic Sounds Of Jimmy Urine was primarily an instrumental dive into various synth-laden idioms inspired by such classic electronic composers as Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre, Euringer is a whole new pint glass of piss altogether.
The album’s audio verité vibe is best described as sneaking through Urine’s diary, with diversions of everything from metaphorical politics to wild-assed cover versions to having his buddies and parents (Ma Euringer counts in Spanish on “That’s How Jimmy Gets Down” while Dad assumes the role of disappointed parent on “Two And A Half Years” and a bitter old record producer on the cover of the Doobie Brothers’ “What A Fool Believes”) helping him out on the record.
“This album is kind of a psychedelic, counterculture, avant-garde record with vocals,” he opines. “I’m calling it Euringer because I didn’t want to corrupt any of the other stuff. It’s not Cinematic Sounds. It’s not MSI, which have always been a provocative in-your-face kind of band. [The solo album] allows me to experiment with various BPM speeds, lyrics and tones and try some other avenues.
“It is very personal,” he agrees. “As much as I like being in a crazy shock-rock band, the one thing that gets lost is that people focus on the shock rock and don’t really focus on the fact that I’m a really fucking great programmer, and I’m a deconstructionist and an audio collagist.”
“I sculpt audio and make songs around it,” he continues.“And that’s the first thing that gets lost. [imitates fast-talking industry type.] ‘Awww, Jimmy! You’re crazy and the band’s crazy and they’re great and they do all this provocative amazing stuff,’ and that’s fine—that’s what Mindless are supposed to be. But nobody ever says, ‘I like how you programmed that beat and sampled that stuff backwards.’ [Laughs.] That area is what I went full hog into.”
Urine is thrilled with what his collaborators brought to the proceedings. On “If It Ain’t You Today It’ll Be You Tomorrow,” Urine and Tankian updated Rev. Martin Niemöller’s famous anti-Nazi sermon, “First They Came For The Socialists…” “I always thought that quote was really great,” Urine says. “I wanted to write something a little bit political considering the climate, but not a whole record. Serj was in one of the most amazing politically charged bands of the last 20 years. He went through a whole bunch of lyrics and poetry that he had and screamed stuff for an hour. We had coffee, and I went home and edited [the parts] I liked. The point I’m trying to make [on the song] is that we should all stand up for fringe causes because once they’re gone, you’re next.”
Urine teams up with Claret on “Fuck Everything,” describing it as “our ex-pat song. We kind of wrote it while we were packing up our house and leaving, and then we recorded it in Wellington. She’s a really great songwriter: I’ll be sculpting a song for two months, and she’ll write one in a day. I was like, ‘Oh, my God, that was so quick! No wonder I married you!’” [Laughs.]
For “The Medicine Does Not Control Me,” Urine was trying to write a song about alcohol that wasn’t about partying or rehab. “I don’t have an addictive personality. I’m not trying to use alcohol to escape; I use it for time travel,” he explains. “I can pull myself a glass of scotch and then go watch a ton of movies that are based in New York. I can find a movie that was shot in the neighborhood I grew up—‘Oh, there’s the place I went to school. There’s the place where I used to play pinball’—immerse myself in it and then fall asleep. I don’t drink to get crazy. I think there’s a middle ground where people use liquor to get creative, but you never hear songs about it. You only hear the ones where people ‘went too far’ or they’re ‘gonna party!’”
He wanted to work with electronic/hip-hop maven Grimes because of her hands-on work ethic. “She’s DIY like a motherfucker. There aren’t a lot of ladies doing synth work, producing, mastering, editing their own videos, everything. Because she’s so talented, I wanted her to write the track and to produce me singing it, like a reverse Britney Spears thing: I’m the ingenue, and Grimes is the mastermind. We didn’t have enough time to do it that way, so I gave her some tracks and ["Medicine”] was the one she chose.”
Urine has been friends with Way back in the days when My Chemical Romance were opening for MSI in NYC. So having the 21st century polymath appear on the fast-paced “Sailor In A Life Boat” was a complete no-brainer.
“First of all,” he begins to laugh, “Gerard could have sang every song on the record! MCR did a B-side from something off Danger Days [["Zero Percent”]here the programming was drum-and-bassy, very weird and hard at the same time, like MCR being MSI.”
“This time, I figured we’d go the other way and leave it up to Gerard,” he continues.“I sent him the song, and he obviously knocked it out. The lyrics—“you’re a dogface on the frontline,” “a pilot on a ship that’s going down,” convey that you used to be a sailor in the Navy, but now you’re just some dude sitting in the middle of the fucking ocean. His vocal and lyrical style comes across to me like a Frank Miller comic book from 1981, like Sin Cityand stuff.”
As usual, Urine can’t resist taking a swipe at the scene. And here he is with “Random EMO Top Line Generator,” one of the most heartfelt songs he’s ever written. And the joke is on all of us: Much like the net’s random name generators for everything from porn star names to Wu-Tang handles and other monikers, Urine had the net write lyrics.
“I loaded up, like, a thousand random generators that gave me words,” he explains. “I put in a word, then a random generator would give me a sentence. Than I’d put that sentence into a different random generator, and it would give me a phrase. I wrote this song based on what I’d get out of these random generators, and I made it a very emotional and heartfelt song.”
“So the schtick is people will say, ‘Wow, it’s so deep, look how mature Jimmy is,’” he continues.“Motherfuckers, a robot wrote that song. The robot wrote the lyrics, and you’re lovin’ it! A robot wrote a song that’s so emotionally empowering it could have been written in the last 10 years. And random generators are all over the internet, you could write a whole album that way! We’re really living in a William Gibson cyberpunk reality these days.”
With all the cool collabs with women, men and machines happening on Euringer, it might be easy to ignore the elephant in the room. You know, the one with “MSI” painted in 4-foot DayGlo letters and festooned with crudely rendered drawings of penises. Urine swears that everything is good with his homies in Mindless, and the door is always open.
“That’s not the reason I made a solo album or why I moved to New Zealand. We were all on different coasts. These days, the technology exists so you don’t even have to be in the same room to make a record. MSI are a wonderful art project that never stops.”
And you’re not going to see Euringer on tour to support the new album, either. “I’m not going to tour for it because I’m gonna chill here in New Zealand for a while,” he says. “I’ll make some videos, do press and work on some top secret projects—maybe a Mindless record—down here. Incorporating New Zealand in all the stuff I’m doing is really cool and fun. I like touring with Mindless; I don’t need to put a whole new band together.”
Right now though, he’s enjoying his time in Middle Earth and keeping busy. He’s also working alongside Tankian and the animation house ShadowMachine for an English gangster cartoon called Fuktronic. Expect more, but on his terms, as he steadfastly refuses to reveal if the other projects he’s got rolling are for film, video games or elevators.
“Oh man, I wanna do stuff for elevators really bad!” he beams excitedly, in the same perverse glee that has marked every creative avenue he’s cartwheeled and silly-walked on for decades. “I can’t remember the last time I’ve gotten into an elevator that had music playing in it.” He pauses for a moment. “Damn, we gotta bring Muzak back into elevators. I’m gonna change all the Mindless songs into Muzak. The future is elevators.”
You can preorder Euringer here prior to its mid-October release date. Check out “Problematic” from the LP and the record’s artwork below.

I wonder if Mikey was a guest on the track since he was out that way at the same time??? Maybe that’s why he’s tagged??? 🤔
i was in the camp of people who thought that he came up with the name for the single, but that's a really interesting thought because mikey was in la at the same time the dunes were recording, if my memory is correct.
it would be kinda crazy if mikey was a guest on the track since there is that indication of a gerard and ray collab for the fnaf movie. . .

I think a large part of the “fuck it” thing was how rapidly everyone’s life shifted and Gerard refocusing his priorities for the first time since 2001. I’m not sure when they (he) came up with the concept, but dead kids and parents mourning isn’t something many people can even consider but especially not new parents. If that was his last big concept then he decided it wasn’t what he wanted, he may have decided the band in general wasn’t where his energy had to be anymore. The Kevin Smith interview was when he played that cute as fuck song he wrote about Bandit and it was so different to anything he ever shared, even scarecrow was dark, that I feel like the stuff he took inspiration from had changed entirely too. Also, he very possibly just wasn’t vibing with the death and sickness and loss that MCR had become associated with. I can’t imagine the emotional toll it would take to be accused of encouraging teenagers to do these awful things, while being overworked and exhausted, while having these new personal responsibilities. They resorted to letting Glee do Sing just to spread the song as far as possible and then said it was a song for the fans which high-key beaks my heart. HA being him in a suit with Britpop-ish songs right after MCR ended kind of cements for me that he was determined to separate himself entirely and form something newer, lighter, more lively. He was a harsh bitch for dumping them via open letter, though. MCR x group therapy collab when.
i agree that the paper kingdom sounded extremely dark obviously. and definitely had to be hard for all of them who were parents of young children, except mikey. but like it didn't HAVE to be like that. imo. i mean danger days, like you said scarecrow is dark, but honestly i don't think of dd as a depressing/dark record. its really bright and lively and a celebration to me, for most of it. so like. and im just gonna be like stream of consciousness here sorry. but yea i wonder why they would go back to something so dark, when they knew what touring tbp and playing it every night did to them. and i was saying to a friend recently, i wonder how much the backlash and negative reaction to tbp had an impact on what they ended up doing with dd. and then now, i wonder if gerard thought he had to go back to a place of darkness and depression post-dd bc it wasn't as much of a commercial success or whatever, the way that tbp was. i kind of never thought that that mattered to them that much, but now im wondering..bc like even at the shrine, the way that most of the crowd further back than the front like 4 or 5 rows was mostly silent for dd songs...like i wonder if that mattered to them and they wanted to like appeal to the fans that were fans of the first 3 albums again. much to think about.
but like. i don't believe that the paper kingdom was the only concept that gerard had in his mind at the time, or that he could have come up with. and on that note, i don't think it had to be a concept album at all? i mean thats what they were known for at that point i guess, even though gerard until like 2020 insisted that dd wasn't a concept album. lol. but like cw, as far as we know, wasn't a concept album. but THAT also raises another question, like was it;'s lack of concept part of why it was scrapped? more questions we don't have an answer to..but yea like. i just don't believe that the paper kingdom concept was their only option. but i have had an assumption for a while that is like. PART of the breakup (which i think is extremely multifaceted and like probably a million things contributed to it) was that gerard felt disconnected from the message that the band set out with intially to change the world with. he said the band saved him, and maybe he didn't need that anymore? but he's also said that the breakup time period was like his worst depression since he DID start the band. so like...idk there's a disconnect for me there. but "i stopped bleeding three years ago while you kept screaming for revolution' from tomorrow's money is totally about that. him feeling disconnected from what the fans expected out of mcr. which ties into like what i already said, did he try to reconnect with that old part of himself to please the fans, and it was like a detrimental decision for his mental health, which then led to the breakup? idk!!!! im just thinking. and thinking hard.
all of that was me mostly responding to the paper kingdom stuff you said but now that i read the rest of the ask i feel like we kind of came to similar conclusions.
i do think they need group therapy tho. like im almost convinced that they had to have at least a few heavy conversations in order to do the band again. i mean how do you write THOSE songs about each other and then be like *twirls hair* lets go on tour...
