Summer Anime 2023: GoHands saves anime
Sugar Apple Fairy Tale S2
Tumblr media
I wasn't really all that impressed with S1 of Sugar Apple, but it was fun enough. There was a chance it would do away with its naive ruminations on chauvinism and slavery, after all. And yeah, it did that. But maybe I should have stated more clearly that that bland nonsense also needs to be replaced with something better, and that part certainly did not happen. The show fills the vacant space with two things: The kind of completely uninteresting worldbuilding and politics that were all over S1, weren't good there either, but were so insubstantial they weren't worth of note. Well, now they are. The other is that we get a ridiculously evil over the top villain that's amusing for one episode, but gets old really fast. Not to mention that everyone (outside of the designated villain, which is why you know he's bad) seems to love Anne now, especially Challe. So the spicy romance interplay is gone and Challe is now an edgy white knight that tips his fedora to m'lady. And the big finale is that Anne inspires a dozen pretty boys to invent Christmas, somehow. This one just is very poorly written and as of S2 has optimized out all things that distract from that. 4/10
Noble Farmer
Tumblr media
The appeal of Noble Farmer isn't what the show does, but what it is: Notable action shounen mangaka Hiromu Arakawa telling a few anecdotes about her growing up as a farmer on Hokkaido. Of course we've known that since Silver Spoon, but it's still enough of a novelty to just barely carry this short series. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's not. As usual, a short doesn't actually need to be all that good to be an easy watch, but I've seen better ones. 5/10
Instead Of Zom 100 You Get NieR:Automata Ver1.1a
Tumblr media
Why hello, we have a vacant 5/10 spot for mysterious reasons. Let's talk about a production disaster from the season before that just managed to end in this one. To be honest, I've already forgotten about Near A Tomato Service Pack 1 (Backer Beta) so I'll have to patch it up with my knowledge of the game, which is probably for the better anyway. Or is it? I am one of the few people that don't think that Nier Automata is the pinnacle of storytelling¹, so one reason to even give this a chance is to see if the story clicks better if it's told in a more straightforward way. But then it just seems that the opposite is true: Yes, it is indeed the main plot of Nier Automata, but the lack of nonlinearity and other assorted participatory/environmental storytelling just points out that there isn't all that much to that, especially towards the end when it's just about beating up the big monster, but in a sad way. The few things that it does change or add either don't amount to anything we didn't already know or have their payoff pushed onto the sequel. At least the music is still fantastic but it's just literally the game music, so that's nothing new either. This anime is probably for the fans, but even the fans will quickly realize that it's inferior to the real thing - though for them, inferior to the BEST. STORY. EVER!!!! is likely still plenty good enough. 5/10
¹ Before a million salty Yoko Taro fans jump down my throat, it's pretty good, okay? Just not as exceptional as you think. Thank you.
Yohane the Parhelion -SUNSHINE in the MIRROR-
Tumblr media
So why does this exist. I can only imagine that Numazu has a bit of surplus marketing budget now, so here we go, Aqours is back... In the form of an appealing, but pretty bog standard children's show. Sunshine already wasn't the most profound Love Live show, nor did it have the most multidimensional characters, but naturally this is a shallower version of that - with the curious exception of Mari, who somehow is a more well-rounded character here than she originally was (though what that means is left as an exercise to the reader). Yoshiko herself of course has a bit more going on, but she better have, given that this show is very definitely about her and her problems - and it's still not really enough. All of this of course is expected from a children's afternoon show where the big bad is a vague "calamity" that doesn't even get defined as much as being made out of people's negative emotions or something like that. No it's just uh, bad (and by bad I mean purple), and then gets defeated by friendship and good vibes and an Aquors single. This show should have really done more random nonsense like Chika and her sisters randomly having a Sentai team and Dia being Kamen Rider for tedious IRL reasons, but that quirkiness is so minor it feels more out of place than anything. I don't want to be too harsh on this because it's still fundamentally a good time, but there really just isn't much to it. But I guess that's just how it goes with entrenched franchises, right? 6/10
GoHands presents the GoHands Power Hour featuring The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses and The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today
Before I get to the details of these shows, there's quite a bit they have in common, and that is, obviously, being made by GoHands. I have a pretty complicated history with GoHands. Yes, I did watch the whole Handhakersverse mostly because it was unbelievably ugly, but on the other hand, there is something to be said about an unique, consistent aesthetic: GoHands is dreamcore. I don't think it's pretty, but I do think it's fascinating, which is why I wasn't amused when every Anime Opinion Haver immediately wrote these two off as being unwatchable and took cheap shots on Ecks Dot Com. So I'll watch them. I thought. That'll show em.
The punchline was obvious: Neither of these shows are crassly ugly in a meaningful way. They're a bit overdone, but honestly they're more reminiscent of some SHAFT productions. Really, outside a few meme gif shots in the first episodes, there's nothing special about the looks apart from an overreliance on postproduction gimmicks like particle and lighting effects and stifling color correction, and everyone loves those when KyoAni does them. So there goes the reason to watch them... Except then, in a truly GoHandsian further twist, they're actually good. I'm as puzzled as you are.
Tumblr media
Well, "good" is maybe a bit much. Glasses Girl is definitely watchable though, mostly just because Mie is remarkably cute. Of course, this being an entry in the "my classmate is wacky and I can't deal with it" genre, the same cannot be said of Komura, whose React-Man antics are most charitably described as "occasionally not annoying". The show gets a lot of credit for actually finding new ways to make the one joke that is in its title reasonably fresh, and it even manages to elicit some d'aww feelings towards the clumsy kid romance it develops into. I can't tell a lie, it's fine. 6/10
Tumblr media
This one honestly is pretty good though, even though the absurd wish fulfilment setup of "I'm a lonely dysfunctional office lady but my cat is actually a perfect homemaker" seems thoroughly sketchy. To be honest, Yukichi actually does act like a cat, so I can only assume this is indeed written by a lonely dysfunctional office lady. As far as surreal daily life comedies go, this one's a winner though. It's cute, it's funny, and all that. A rather simple comedy about a very obvious joke setup, but there's enough going on in the periphery to make it not boring - and then there's hooks like half the female cast having a crush on Saku, which if acted upon would instantly make this one of the dankest yuri shows of all time. One can only dream. 7/10
BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!
Tumblr media
It's always the same with these gacha franchise shows. Even when they're good, they're always bloated by too many characters, too many established plots, too much desire to make everyone equally likeable, and a strict adherence to the status quo. Over the years, many a time I have written "but what can you do". What can you do, indeed?
So here comes MyGO, where the plan apparently was "how about THIS time we just don't do any of that". Now, this part is interesting only for people like me who watched this show as part of the franchise. Nobody else would (or, honestly, should) care that this franchise show breaks the mould uncommonly hard — only whether it's good. Thankfully, MyGO is also just one of the best teen drama shows around, franchise or not. I guess it really helps if you make a show that a writer would actually want to write and not just a bunch of corporate mandates, but Ayana Yuniko takes it no the next level and does things that even "regular" shows in a similar lane don't attempt; for example, Tomori completely fixes the problems I had with Bocchi (of The Rock fame) by being treated appropriately seriously. Now, I don't want to oversell this show, you won't get the next Kids on the Slope here - it's still a small-scale anime about a bunch of drama kids that produces not one, but two marketable bands in the end. But within this framework, it really is about as good as it gets. Every character is complicated and has major personality flaws, which seems very risky but extremely worth when it pays off like here. In short, it's textbook character drama. It's a bit silly at times, but I'll accept that as yeah, teen girls in bands can be pretty goddamn silly. It also doesn't have an ending, but I'd question whether a low-key drama like this even can have a proper ending. They manage to make their disastrous teen band work for a bit, what more can you expect?
I guess I should mention the looks also, which are nothing particularly special when you know the fairly high level of CG animation Sanzigen have consistently been doing. Of course this serious show doesn't have much of the cartooniness, but makes up for it with select instances of really good direction — MyGO has a particular knack for uncomfortable wide angles.
In the end, MyGO is an uncommonly legitimate character drama with low stakes. It can dip into melodrama but not any worse than these shows always do. Ironically the most questionable aspect is that there will be a sequel based on the other band, Ave Mujica, which work extreme well as a joke about how they are everything MyGO is not. But that makes them an awful band full of awful people, and I'm not sure if I want to actually watch that. It's certainly a tall order, but then again, I didn't expect much from this show to begin with. For now it's an 8/10

Math, please provide an outline for that Planet Swap AU. This is sending endorphins to my brain. And I need any excuse to write my version but I lack the confidence to do it without some or even any outside validation.
*crawl out of my hole*
Hey hey hey!!! I am back to making text post, I miss them too much lmao.
So! First of all, this planet swap auwas brainstormed with my lovely friend @chemos-factories , who gave me free reign to start yelling about it. So! Without waiting....
Primarch, planet swap edition:
Fulgrim, the flower of Nuceria: To start things up, let's go with the first one we came up with, Fulgrim! He had the horrible, horrible luck to be send on that planet... And to be too pretty for the fighting pit. Since his childhood, he was a pleasure slave for the high rider, sitting like a pretty adornment at their arms as he watched the people fight and dies in the arena. He tried to revolt, and almost succeeded... But he was recaptured in the end. And instead of installing the nails, the bastards on that planet figured out how to take away his biggest weapon: his voice. They removed his vocal cords, rendering him mute. He still is a prideful, elegant, spiteful bastard, and now that he is free, he will never bow down to another master ever again.
Ferrus, the blacksmith of Caliban: Ferrus was very lucky, as in, his pod was found by peasant out in the forest, looking for food. The old tales of Caliban would talk of little children abandoned in the forest by the fair folk, and he was welcomed into their home. His father was a blacksmith, and he learned the trade with him. But always, he was attracted to the forest. It's also where he met a dragon fallen from the sky, with a strange body of metal. He still slayed the beast, but his arms became strange after, covered in metal. Due to his feat, he became a page, and eventually became the most legendary knight of the planet, even his is gruff peasant attitude was often criticize by the noble knights house.
Magnus , the wild witch of Medusa: Magnus grew up very, very lonely. He had a craving, to meet other people, to see others, and yet he was always alone. But from a young age, through his loneliness, object around him would sometime start to glow, and animate themself, become his companions and friends. Magnus himself had no real comprehension of how he did those miracle, they came to him naturally. He would make fire appear in his palms and thunder rumble from the sky. Strange automata, animated by the wrap, would follow him around, and he would sleep under the star, dreaming of far away place, full of green and people.
Perturabo, the builder of Chemos: if anyone was in a perfect environment... It was Pert. He ended up on a planet size game of Satisfactory. Automations, mechanisation, optimisation- all of it were almost a game to him. By the time Big E was there, he had probably created of megapolis that was planet size. Fully self sufficient and automated, he started importing that concept to almost every planet he put under compliance. Think retro-futurism, jetson style. He was also often fighting with the mechanicus, creating quite a lot of tension between the two groups.
Horus, the Gangster of Nostramo: Horus was lucky. As a baby, he was found by people, and adopted, and raised in a loving, if poor family. But he saw the horrible corrupt system around him... And decided that he would be on top. He joined a gang, and climbed the rank, establishing his own empire in blood and fear, becoming the leader of the largest and most terrifying criminal syndicate on the planet. Rules are just suggestion in his eyes. To him, real power is being able to impose your will on others, and he has very few morals and what he would not do.
Corvus, the free spirit of Chogoris: In mongolian tradition, hunting eagles are an important animal. The legend say that baby corvus was found, because a large eagle screamed until the hunters came to discover her. She love the birds, and feel a deep, wild connection to them. Some say that they spy for her, that they would flew above the cities snd come back, whispering secrets. Other said that she could turn into mist and fly away with her beloved friends. In truth, she was mostly using her power, to hide and disappear, and strategy to take down the walled cities.
Konrad, The Oracle of Maccrage: Konrad Curze, this time around, get a happy story. His pod was found, and brought to Konnor and Euten, who immediately adopted the small baby with strange eyes. Quickly, they discovered that their sons had strange power, as their sons would go into fits and see the future, or wake up crying from nightmare of horrible visions. But always, his parents were there, reassuring him: he was burdened with a wonderful gift, a precious power that would help him make the world a better place, and they would always help him fight those apocalyptic visions of the future. As such, he was able to avoid the coup to assassinate his father, and became a symbol of hope and justice on his planet. He is an original, a little weirdo who babble about destiny and doesn't like clothes much, but he is, for once, loved.
Sanguinius, the cryptid of Fenris: the people of Fenris have a legend. Of a winged beastman, living in the mountains. It would slay wolves and bath in their blood, and sometime devour hunter that strayed too far in his territory. All his life, Sanguinius was hunted, feared and hated, by the people of Fenris. He was a wild creature, spoken of in legends, and had to be captured by the emperor himself, to finally become a human, and not a beast.
Mortarion, prince of Prospero: Morty, this time around, get the life he deserve. A kingly positions, love, family, educations... He learned to use his power, never feared them for a minute. But among the intellectual, his interest were seens as odd: he had a strange fascination for flora, and the way plants were linked to the wrap. Under his skilled hands, entire desserts could bloom into brilliant forest, humming with power. Such a strong link was sure to attract mysterious entities....
Lorgar, son of the Emperor on Terra: Lorgar, in a perfect roll of dice, went where Alpharius was suppose to go: right back home. He was raised by the Emperor and Malcador, and all his childhood, had a deep need to please his father, for him to pay attention to him. He is a skilled diplomate, knowing perfectly well how to navigate the high lords and politic of Terra, and would follow any order that his beloved father give him, blindly.
Leman, the Dog of Delivrance: Leman, even at an early age and away from any animals, had the instinct of a wolf. From a very young age, he would listen to the political dissident, and assimilate their belief. The good of the pack was important. They were all, in a way, part of his pack, and he should protect them all. He developed an extreme collectivist streak, and from then on, was a ride or die political activist and extremist. Every human life lost that could be prevented was a tragedy, and every soul mattered. They were all part of his pack. He is fiercely protective of his people, from the most noble of astarte, to the lowest ranked serf. Democratic voting should be applied in all major decisions, and he fully accept to be put in question.
Jaghatai, the barbarian of Baal: Jaghatai had the luck to lend on the mad max world, and he flourished there. He quickly was able to conquer most of his planet, and in general, was a proud road warrior, standing atop a roaring engine and smiling like a maniac, painted in the blood of his enemies. Hemight have encouraged and developed a cult toward motors and machine, wich fully developed into a mechanicus adjacent religion once they joined the imperium.
Rogal, the stolen child of Nocturne: Rogal Dorn was found on Nocturne, and very well loved by his parents, from a very young age. The problem was that, as a pre-teen, a dark eldar raid happened... And Roval was taken in as a slave. The following years were, for him, incredibly harrowing, especially since the drukhari were fascinated by this strange human that would heal fast and grow bigger than others. Still, they did not expect the white haired human to one day brake his chain, escape, and lead the slave of Commorragh into a large, open scale revolt. He was able to escape back into real space, with a large group of slave, and go back home, where he was seen as an hero. From that day onward, he became the terror of the Drukhari, as he swore to purge the galaxy of their race.
Roboute, the patient King of Barbarus: Roboute had... An horrible early life. You know what he endured. But when he was finally able to go down into the valley, to meet up humans, he promissed himself: he would clean the very air of his planet, and destroy the very mountains upon wich the monsters resided. He slowly, surely pushed the populations toward an industrial revolution, establishing large mines into those mountains, figuring out how dynamite itself worked, as he, slowly, prepared to force his own father down into the valleys.
Alpharius and Omegon, the Trickster of Ctonia: The twin were lucky- they were together. Not separated by anything or anyone. They never joined any of the numerous street gang, but instead become some sort of local legend, a vigilante hero, fighting corruption and crimes in the alley and protecting the people. Them being twins gave them an almost supernatural advantage, as they seemed to be everywhere at once, able to see everything. Their ability to pass as normal was also insanely usefull to their crime fighting Endeavor.
Vulkan, the revolutionary of Olympia: Vulkan, from a young age, was close to his sister. But he was also close to all the servent in the palace, and would often sneak out, to talk to the people, and realised early on that his own father was, well... A Dictator. And he did not like that discovery. He was emphatic, and did not see why they needed slaves, or why Calliphone could not rule the city, or why war was necessary! He started talking to the people... And they listened to him. More and more followed him, until he had fermented a full on revolution against his own father. His populist movement grew and spread to other cities, and quickly, his planet became a people's republic, and he had the pride to see his sister, who ha supported him every step on the way there, be elected first Chancellor of Olympia.
Lion, the Tyrant of Colchis: Lion was, in this world, found by Kor Phaeron... But also quickly adopted his way of thinking. He saw religions as a way to stay on top, a tool of power. He would readily conspire with the people around him, seeing assassinations as a completely valid way of asserting dominations. He never actually quite believed in the gods, but saw them as a useful tool, better than any law text to enforce one's will on the masses.
Angron, the Light of Inwit: Angron was dropped into a brutal world. It was not a cruel one per say, but it was one were you had to be dtrong to survive. And Angron, who could feel and take the pains of others unto himself... Could never accept such a situation. Their societydid not have to be as cold as the planet they inhabited, and he fought to establish to change all his life, backed by his beloved grandfather.

Drakengard 3 and Nier Automata ending analysis spoilers ahead
While I would love to talk about Drakengard 1 as well as Nier Gestalt and Nier Replica, I am not as familiar with those games as I am 3 and Automata. Feel free to talk about them in reblogs though. I once saw a quote about the Drakengard and Nier series, "In Drakengard the protagonist isn't a good person with pure intentions, but they end up saving the world. In Nier, the protagonists are people with the best of intentions, yet they end up dooming the world." And this has stuck with me, ever since I saw it. It has such a sense of irony in it, almost like a Greek tragedy. But, I wondered to myself, if that was it, if the only point was irony, and I don't think it is. I believe that the point is, to first save others or something bigger, you must first save yourself. Let me explain.
Taking a closer examination of Zero, why was she able to save the world? And for clarifications sake I am talking about ending D. Zero is objectively, the worst kind of person, first and foremost is that she is a killer without remorse, and her personality is that of a rude, lazy person, who doesn't care for others. So when the flower gave her the power of intoner, why did she fight against it? The power of an Intoner is nothing to scoff at, she had magic, she was unable to die, she had no real reason to fight against the flower, she could've very well continued as it's host, but she didn't. She chose to save herself in a weird way, not her life as she was doomed to have to die to destroy the flower, but herself. She refused to let the flower push her into a narrative that went against who she is. Zero might be a lazy, stubborn asshole who doesn't give two shits about anyone who isn't her, but that's who she is and that's what's important, that she is still a human. She doesn't fight to save the world for any noble reason she fights against the flower because it wants to use her and is forcing her to it's own beat (Intoner joke hah) and yeah her reason for fighting isn't noble but it's important because it's hers, it aligns with her character perfectly, which is the point. The flower needed a vessel that was passive, that it could manipulate, that would work with it or for it or whatever, and Zero isn't that kind of person, it's very first victim would've been Zero, killing her stubbornness, her lonerness, the Flower wanted to change her into something she's not. So she fights against it, she fights to save herself, to not let her be changed or controlled by something else. And by saving herself, she saves others.
It's kinda the idea that you have to secure your own oxygen mask before you can help others. Zero fights for humanity because it challenged her humanity specifically, and in securing her own oxygen mask, the consequences of that is others are saved. And if Zero, the worst of humanity, can see herself at her worst and decide to fight for a better ending, it reflects back onto humanity, for at their worse you can see something worth saving.
But what about Automata? 2B, 9S, and A2, are built to be weapons of war. Their inhumanity is baked into the conflict of the story, they're fighting a proxy war for human masters, they're a specific type of android built for combat, they're recycled from machine cores, they have bombs built in for detonation, they get pleasure from combat. They are meant to be weapons and weapons only. And they aren't given any chance to deny that, their emotions are prohibited. They don't get to save themselves. Even when A2 defects, she still fights in the war, it's the price she pays for being the last one alive. And because they can't save themselves, they cannot save others. How would they know to save others from a narrative they themselves cannot escape? Ultimately, 2B, 9S, and even A2, cannot consider them as individuals to themself, as something worth fighting for or saving. If they were humanized they would be able to fight for humanity as humans themselves. But in Automata, humanity itself has reached a godlike unattainable status, even the concept of humanity has been robbed of its humanity, it denies all the contradictions, the bad and thus the good, in order to have something worth fighting for.
But, as proven by Zero, even the bad is still worth fighting for. The good and the bad go hand in hand. And by dehumanizing what you want to save, you separate and destroy it further, and if you yourself are unable to humanize or help yourself, you cannot reach out with anything meaningful for what you are trying to save. You must first recognize the cage you are in to recognize the cages of others.
For Zero it's prioritizing herself over a cause, but in Nier it's prioritizing a cause over the self, and while the first is arguably more selfish, you cannot save others without first saving yourself. Martyrdom isn't worth something if it's forced upon you. Denying them the selfishness to consider themselves, sure it makes their intentions "pure" but those intentions aren't something they crafted themselves for their own self, it's manufactured for the androids, and it denies them their humanity. Humanizing yourself, allows you to humanize those around you in ways that can save lives. In Nier, they couldn't humanize or save themselves, and that's why the world was doomed. The "selfish" desire of an individual to keep living despite everything around them saying no, that's human, that's humanity still fighting, and the androids were forced into a narrative that made them otherwise. I think the real Greek tragedy is that they weren't given the chance to save themselves, not what they could do for others, but what they couldn't do for themselves.

Ten Songs Tag
Thanks for the tag @druidx. Finally getting around to this tag game now I'm home from holiday and can have multiple tags open and the ability to copy/paste effectively. Taking all the songs from my generic Titan Playlist
Tagging: @sparrow-orion-writes , @homesteadchronicles, @warriorbookworm, @mariahwritesstuff,@ashirisu, @thesorcerersapprentice,
Rules: Use your WIP playlist and put it on shuffle. Write the first 10 songs that come up and quote your favorite lyrics from each song and/or the lyrics that fit your WIP best (they might be the same lyrics), then tag 10 people.
All As One- Miracle of Sound
Fight for your values And fight for your friends Fight through this blight Find the light at the end
This one can apply to either the OG Heroes of Toreguarde or to the Destiny's New Servants crew. The lyrics above basically embody the stubborn will to carry on as long as you have others fighting alongside you.
2. Die for You- Otherwise
I would break, I would burn, I would suffer, There's nothing I wouldn't do, do for you. I would lie, I would steal, for no other, You make me feel so alive, So alive I'd die for you!
There are too many couples this would apply to in this damn setting (both romantic and platonic) but I think it fits either Edwin/Selene best and from Edwin's pov if only because I think he really would do all of the above for Selene in the end if she asked (or even if she doesn't).
3. No One Will Save You- Aviators
I burned your world away Devoured by my conviction I left you home afraid While mother's ventured out Don't cry when lanterns fade Soon we'll be awakened But it breaks my heart to say No one will save you now
Oh this one is a good one for the villains, most particularly Darkhide. The chorus basically echoes his kinda sorta regret for needing to sacrifice a whole city of mostly innocent people in order to get what he wants. He was one of the more tragic villains we had in the Destiny's New Servants campaign. A man so broken that he felt he needed to sacrifice so many just to save the one he loved.
4. The Weight of the World (English version)- Neir Automata ost
'Cause we're gonna shout it loud Even if our words seem meaningless It's like I'm carrying the weight of the world I wish that someway, somehow That I could save every one of us But the truth is that I'm only one girl Maybe if I keep believing my dreams will come to life Come to life
The song, as a whole, generally fits Elowyn best, but it does apply to Selene, Meredith and Alexis as well. All four women had to rage against the injustices wrought against them by Fate, Destiny, whatever you want to call it, in order to get the happy ending they wanted.
5. My Revolution- Miracle of Sound
Bring out the brother in me I'm searching for unity Everything is changing Inside of me The city's under my feet The ruins of the elite Everything is changing Inside of me
Ah, the song I chose for Laurence during his little revolution arc. The lyrics above reflect his desire to unite the downtrodden people of Toreguarde to rise up against a clearly corrupt Council and the fact that it changed him, and not in a good way. Clerics of Olidimarra amirite?
6. Hand of Sorrow- Within Temptation
So many dreams were broken and so much was sacrificed Was it worth the ones we loved and had to leave behind? So many years have past, who are the noble and the wise? Will all our sins be justified?
I chose this one to represent Alexis' journey during @druidx's 'What Alexis Did Next', but that part above could apply to any one of the Heroes of Toreguarde because all of them had dreams that were completely shattered at one point and all have various 'sins' to their names that could be justified by the circumstances they happened in. It's also hard to say who were the most noble and wise of them.
7. Building Better Worlds- Aviators
But no the battle isn't won The war has only just begun And we'll keep fighting, keep building A better place for us And if they strike us down tonight We'll sear the darkness with the light
This song was chosen more for the vibes, but this bit here reminds me very strongly of when the Heroes of Toreguarde finally got to the point where they could take Toreguarde back after its fall.
8. Ready Aim Fire- Imagine Dragons
With our backs to the wall The darkness will fall We never quite thought We could lose it all
I like this song as a theme for the first arc I Gm'd after taking over the Destiny's New Servants campaign. As much as the party had won against Darkhide, they quickly found out they still had their proverbial backs to the wall and could easily lose everything they'd just fought for.
9. The Moment We Come Alive- Red
Together we are bright as the stars We're a light that will never die
This whole song is basically a theme for the main thrust of the Darkhide Arc of the Destiny's New Servants campaign, but I particularly love these two lines from the chorus. The party have come together as a proper found family by this point and have become a beacon of hope against the tyranny of Darkhide and his allies.
10. Immortal- Aviators
We make our own way, We rebuild The city's razed Our prophecy is self fulfilled For better days
Both parties from the completed Titan campaigns do basically become legends in their own rights by the time of The Ouroboros of Destiny campaign, so this song is a fitting tribute to them. The above lyrics fit well with the OG heroes rebuilding Toreguarde from the ashes of the Demon War, which is a lovely mental image.

Aiguille’s magecraft is specialized in automatas and they have many uses: they can be cannon fodder, although it isn’t so recommended because of the materials. It is also relatively easy for him to interface with drones and use them to scout ahead and don’t be detected by magical fields. There are two uses that shouldn’t be underestimated: the automatas can be used as vessels for souls to control like puppets, meaning that Heroic Spirits attached to others’ Noble Phantasms like Kotaro’s ( @jaakunxkaze ) Immortal Chaos Brigade or Iskandar’s Ionioi Hetairoi can use any available automata to move around in physical form without being a burden to the Servant, even the appearance would reflect the original spirit. The downside is that if they go back to the spirit form is to relinquish the automata. Otherwise it is a close reproduction of how they used to be in life. The another use is as prosthetic. Any lost limb can be replaced by an automata’s part, although it might require a few maintenance every now and then. Or even added extra limbs, if that’s their thing, although Aiguille would resist the latter for ethical reasons.

A quick and dirty worldbuilding drabble for a blades in the dark game
The entire world is governed by the Tetrapolar Union. There is no lever of power, be it economic or technological that they don not have their hands on. Where their constituents might have once been rapacious empires gorging themselves on resources and labor, the Union slowly chokes the life out of the world to feed itself. Below are the four poles that comprise the Union The Serene Thalassocracy of Velata- Oldest, strongest city-state, founder of the Tetrapolar Union. The economic and military beating heart of the Union. Heavily aristocratic, with ship captains and admirals as nobles and royalty. Their culture venerates the ideal of the masculine sailor, rugged and unflappable, men and women alike are expected to live up to this ideal. Velata has largely transitioned from an industrial economy to a service one, the delicate work of creating magitech along with all of the most prestigious magical academies reside here, their students all becoming part of the Apparati dela Mare, the state magician corp. All its people grow fat on the implicit imperialism of the Union. The Industrialist Republic of Prydain - Similarly aged and venerable as their Veletese counterparts, the Prydains have focused instead on metalwork and resource extraction. In the past Prydain was an empire to rival Velata, and had once warred with them but recently have found cooperation and compact to be the more profitable path. Immense foundries and mills crowd Prydain cities, filling it with them stink of work. Prydain is also well known for their industrial automata, largely totally obedient and capable of feats of immense strength and durability. Few outside of the magnates are aware of their inner workings. Ruled by captains of industry which while elected by the people, do little for their sake.
The Pharusian Futurist State - Founded by a group of scientists, engineers, poets, and theorists from all across the world for the sake of advancement no matter the cost. Work involving everything from development magitechnical flying automata to the biological analysis of paranormal entities is conducted here. They are infamous for their various failed experiments and accidents. Most famous of these is Pharusia itself, a massive aerostatic city that hovers over the ocean. The Futurist State provides economic security for its people so progress can be achieved free from distraction, but imposes no moral or ethical restrictions on their research. The Shinano Federated Republic - A relatively new inductee into the Tetrapolar Union, Shinano was once a military stratocracy that was overthrown by the Unitary Communist movement , headed by the now legendary Ariane Sun-Kowler known among the communists as 'Mother Revolution'. However, the social democratic and moderate wing of the revolution had betrayed the communists and purged them before aligning the newborn Republic with the Union. While less dictatorial than many of their counterparts, power and wealth remains distant from the average person. Discontent with the moderates and incrementalists burns, and while the UniComms may have failed here, they have spread far and wide throughout the Union.

Random thought:
Santi is out of uniform when Jess and Wolfe reunite with the rest of the pack in Smoke and Iron. I have previously thought of this mostly as a sign of him feeling out of place with his former company. He betrayed them, he’s acting against the Library, he doesn’t feel like he has a place in the High Garda anymore. All of which he more or less says on page.
But, on a whumpier note... Wolfe is coming from prison. Wolfe has PTSD from his first time in prison. Who guarded both prisons? High Garda. Who was at least partially responsible for hurting him in prison? High Garda. I don’t think it’s at all unreasonable to say that Wolfe might be triggered by the sight of a soldier in uniform. Or at least uncomfortable with seeing that uniform.
Santi knows this. He was with Wolfe after Rome. So now here he is trying his hardest to show Wolfe that he’s safe. No uniform. Slow movement. That’s all for Wolfe.
(And now I kind of want yet another Wolfe comes home fic. One in which Santi is in uniform when Wolfe sees him for the first time in a year. And Wolfe does not react well to that.)

My #1 post of 2022
If you take out the automata, the alchemy, and the conspiracies for world domination, The Great Library is just higher education in modern America
Based on a conversation with @thegreatlibraryfangirl
The most evil teacher is just fucking exhausted because he can't find a tenure-track position, has no time for the research he really wants to do because he's stuck teaching 100-level classes, and doesn't have adequate mental health insurance coverage to get his PTSD properly treated.
No one ever says it's homophobia or racism, but somehow Wolfe always gets the shit classes, has the worst office location, and never gets research funding, while the straight white guys keep getting promotions and tenure and research funding. Wolfe was his department’s diversity hire, and his department chair will not forgive him for failing to be properly grateful for having a job at such a prestigious university at all. He was supposed to be the token gay brown professor, not to stand up for himself or angrily demand changes in curriculum meetings.
Santi, Wolfe’s more traditionally masculine cop partner, gets paid more than him, gets better benefits than him, gets more respect than him, but keeps getting asked to do things that are just a little unethical and feeling pressured to do them because he knows they'll be homeless without his job (and they’ll lose his health insurance, which might not cover Wolfe’s PTSD adequately, but it’s a lot better than nothing).
Go break up that student protest, whatever it takes? Santi is hoping the students will disperse quietly because he really can't say no to the boss.
"Nic, can you tell that boyfriend of yours to stop showing up at those protests? If he doesn't settle down, we're going to have to arrest him. And it's making you look bad." Santi is bristling at boyfriend and knows how unhappy Wolfe will be, but what can he do? They need his job to survive.
Then Wolfe is sitting there in his tiny basement office with an angry Jess, trying to say, "I really want to help get Morgan out of trouble, but if they catch me involving myself in this, they're probably arresting me and firing my partner and then my PTSD is going to spiral out of control and kill me" without actually saying that.
What is Morgan in trouble for? Protesting the college’s handling of sexual harassment and assault cases on campus. Gregory, Dean of Something or Other, adored by upper administration because his filthy rich family gives very large donations to the university, tried to coerce her into sleeping with him. She reported it, only to have the case swept under the rug because “think of his career. He’s such an important member of the community. It must have been a misunderstanding.” She found out she’s not the only one. She will not be quiet about it.
Frustrated at being told there was no proof Gregory did anything wrong, Morgan hacked his emails and posted a file full of incriminating evidence to the campus Facebook group. She did it with a throwaway account, but the university suspects her and very much wants her caught and charged with felony hacking.
The university asks Wolfe to look into this, of course. Remembering how Gregory used to harass him back when he was a student, Wolfe quietly slips more of Gregory’s passwords to Morgan, while insisting to his bosses that he can’t find any evidence at all.
Santi’s boss wants him on the case, too. Santi doesn’t know how long he can stall before he’s forced to arrest Morgan. “Just grab her at one of those protests,” his boss says. “Bring her in for rioting, we’ll get her to confess to the rest.” He doubts they’re going to do that with legal tactics. He knows what happens to cops who report things like that, and keeps his mouth shut.
Thomas was the star student in the engineering department, until he turned in an assignment that got him flagged as “dangerous.” It didn’t occur to him that the robot he designed had military applications, but it was a very convenient excuse for his department chair to put him on a watch list. When he gets arrested at one of Morgan’s protests, the chair of the engineering department is happy to bail him out, if he'll just do some work on a special project or two... or twenty.... Thomas practically lives in the engineering department offices now. He has no free time. But if he doesn’t do this, he’s looking at terrorism charges, with that robot he designed as evidence against him.
Khalila is an astrophysics major, easily the top student in the school. She’s going to graduate with honors, she already has offers for fully funded graduate positions at 3 universities, this one included, and job offers from NASA, SpaceX, and Blue Origin. She’s doing a research project on recent space shuttle designs when suddenly, suspiciously, every faculty member starts encouraging her to shift her project in a different direction. Why can’t anyone seem to find a copy of that paper on that shuttle design that NASA suddenly, mysteriously, scrapped? She just wanted to see what was wrong with it and apply that to newer designs.
She finds herself in Wolfe’s tiny basement office, asking him about a strange database error. “This is a waste of time,” Wolfe says. “Those other professors are right. You’re going to ruin your career digging into these kinds of failed projects,” he says, while wondering whether and how to slip her the evidence he’s just uncovered that Elon Musk bribed government officials to bury that perfectly good shuttle design in favor of a SpaceX one.
Glain is a criminal justice major, planning a police career. She understands why people keep telling her that she needs to stay away from Morgan’s protests, but she hates it. Protests are legal. The cops should be going after Gregory. She’s sick of hearing from the campus cops that she needs to be careful who she’s seen hanging out with.
Dario is a filthy rich exchange student from Spain. He was just here for a year of studying abroad, but he’s fallen in love with this gorgeous, genius astrophysics major, and now he’s wondering if he’s going to have to call in favors with his cousin at the embassy because he’s about to get arrested helping Khalila get her hands on some documents. He says he hates his roommate, Jess, but he just paid to bail Jess out of jail, and he’s on the phone with his cousin asking about lawyers.

Republishing this review because I just rediscovered this book.
GHOST MACHINE by Kristen Brand
The subtitle of this book calls it a “Goth Steampunk Novel”, and that combination isn’t as unusual as you might think. Science fiction- and the steampunk subgenre- originated in the gothic tales of the 19th century which often incorporated scientific knowledge of the time. See, for example: Frankenstein; Dracula; The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; Poe’s novella “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar” and so on.
“Ghost Machine” begins in that most gothic of locals- an isolated asylum (in Transylvania, no less! Though, there are no vampires to be found). Ella Rosenfeld has been brought to Auttenberg Asylum by her parents to cure her of the spectral hallucinations she’s been suffering ever since she was caught in an accident involving her father’s automata creations. Well, at least she and her family would like to believe the ghosts she’s seeing are only hallucinations. But soon Ella realizes the unquiet spirits are quite real. And, unlucky for her, the head psychiatrist of the asylum- Dr. Grünewald- believes in her abilities too, and wants to turn her into his prized test subject whether she’s willing or not. After enduring several days of the doctor’s torturous experiments, Ella escapes and manages to make it to the castle of Baron Szarka, a local noble and her inventor father’s benefactor. But Dr. Grünewald will not let Ella go that easily and soon comes after her with a small army- including a gigantic iron war automaton (a surprising technological marvel for a seemingly ordinary medical doctor to have at his disposal...)
Ghost Machine starts off as a gothic story with little dashes of Victorian “mad science” here and there. But as the novel progresses the steampunk elements become more pronounced, including the appearance of lightning guns, flying metal giants and that classic of the genre- airships. Brand seamlessly melds both styles together in her tale, and supernatural and super-science eventually come together in an excellent denouement.
I like that Ella Rosenfeld is not a conventional “badass action hero” that one would expect for this sort of story. She is, rather, a very real, normal young woman surviving a dangerous situation through resourcefulness and bravery.
I also appreciate that injury is handled realistically. When Ella’s foot is severely frostbitten, the pain and risk of infection continues to plague her throughout the rest of the story, adding an extra layer of complication that I think a lot of people with long-term injuries can relate to.
Furthermore I enjoyed the fact that, although Grünewald and his staff are cruel and corrupt, the book doesn’t portray all mental health institutions as nightmarish prisons, and suggests that they can be good and helpful places if run by competent and compassionate people.
Ghost Machine is a great blending of gothic and steampunk that will please fans of either genre. It’s currently available through the efiction website radishfiction.com

The Moon and Kaguya, "5 + 1", and... D?
Ack, I'm a One Piece conspiracy theory poster now too, I guess.
I'm sure somewhere out there fans have talked about this, I'm just late to the party. My theory is sparked by this symbol in the Koudzuki family crest:
Tumblr media
It's not in the wiki, so I don't know how many people already know what this is through personal research. This is the Kuyou symbol, the "9 cosmological bodies" based on the Indian concept of Navagraha. It consist of the sun, the moon, the 5 planets visible to human eye, and 2 moon nodes.
We've already seen the sun (Nika) and the planets (the Elders) represented to some degree. Both of which have ties to the mysterious past. What about the moon?
Well, for one, the Koudzuki 月 family itself. They have the very kanji for moon 月 in their name. The family were responsible for the poneglyphs.
There's moon relation tied to Wano too. The other daimyou families of Wano, barring Kurozumi, all have surnames with the "moon" kanji. Fuugetsu 風月, Shimotsuki 霜月, Udzuki 雨月, and Amatsuki 天月.
The big mountain in Wano is "Mount Fuji". Written as 藤山 (Wisteria Mountain) as opposed to the real life Mount Fuji 富士山, but it's a reference all the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mount Fuji is very closely tied to the legend of Princess Kaguya, the moon princess. In the most commonly known version of the tale, the princess gifted the emperor who courted her with elixir of immortality. The emperor then had his men burn a letter in Mount Fuji, hoping that his message would reach her.
Following this trail, the Kaguya and moon connection looks like it might have other ties to other plot elements.
The Moon represents Technology, as the counterpart of the Sun that represents the Supernatural
Nika, the sun god, is closely associated with Devil Fruits and the supernatural. The moon, as we've seen, seems to be related to technology instead (with the automata).
There's been hints that the ancient lost kingdom has connection to both the sun (supernatural) and the moon (technology). Joy Boy, someone from that mysterious ancient past, seems to be himself a manifestation/avatar of "Nika" the sun god. Things from the ancient past like the Noah ship or the ancient robot that Vegapunk has in his lab, point to technology, that connected to the moon.
The crumb trails seem to be converging into one. Could the plot be leading to an idea of "the unification or alliance of the Sun (symbol) and the Moon (symbol)"?
There is still a lot of mysterious things about Nika and the sun, but Vegapunk theorised that devil fruits are manifestations of hope, that came from the beyond.
Tumblr media
Suppose the Devil Fruits, "supernatural powers", are themselves manifestation of "the sun"? If, then, the mysterious ancient tech are "from the moon", maybe in the end they will be used together to bring down World Government to recreate the "ideal world".
We did already know for sure that the Moon people descended to "Earth", similar to the Kaguya legend, as mentioned in the Enel cover story. The automata built on Earth resembles the moon automata, so that appears to imply connection between "Earth tech" and "Moon tech". Perhaps the moon people taught the Earth people technology.
It remains to be seen, though, whether there will be a "moon god" or not. Maybe the "moon god" will be simply represented by "godly technology".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vegapunk's theory also brings the possibility of there being a third "god" entity, which is "the Earth/Mother Nature", or "the Sea" as he says it. This also fits Japan's trio of deities: Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo.
The One Piece Wiki already pointed out that the Koudzuki family seems like a reference to Susanoo, with Oden having Susanoo's brash personality and the family's fight against "Orochi".
That is for another time, though.
"5 + 1"
The famous Kaguya story tells that she first had 5 noble suitors, who she assigned tasks to, and they all failed. Then the emperor himself courted her, before she had to return to the moon. 5 + 1.
This is somewhat relevant to my old post, about how in East Asian philosophy, the 5 elements is seen as "Earthly", and number 6 transcends to "Heaven".
There's been something of a theme of "5 [things] + 1 [bigger thing] above the five" in the story, that maybe hints to the connection to the Kaguya tale.
5 named admirals, and the Fleet Admiral as their top commander. Ryokugyuu and Fujitora may be just replacements for Akainu and Aokiji, but Sensei's suspicious evasion about the "Orange" admiral is curious. He seems to want to keep it 5 for some reason.
5 districts of Wano, and the Capital.
Tumblr media
5 Elders, plus Imu.
Tumblr media
Even Germa was sort of intended to be like that, if Sanji hadn't "failed". The 5 siblings, and Judge leading them. And I've multiple times asked if Germa knew another key related to the past that we haven't seen yet.
Maybe this refers to there being 5 ancient kingdoms, and one "greater empire" they all either belong to, or that there's an actual "god" entity.
I theorise, though, that this could possibly mean that at the end, there will be 5 emperors of the sea + Luffy the King leading them. Somewhat related to that one post I made about the current 4 emperors possibly foreshadowing there being a 5th one incoming. If Luffy ascends as King above the "emperors", then that means there's going to be one extra person to take his place, so the hair colours probably means nothing in this case.
Or maybe it could escalate beyond the emperors of the sea, and it's 5 "armies" representing different factions/forces uniting as one.
What if the Moon has connection to the "D"?
Arabasta, home to the earliest known "D", Lili, has as its "guardian deities" the jackal and the falcon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At a glance they seem to be just based on Anubis and Horus, but it actually has relevance to the Kaguya legend.
In a lesser known version of the Kaguya tale, the princess did not go to the moon, and was not picked up by this grand entourage. Kaguya herself climbed up Mount Fuji, only accompanied by her adopted parents, and stayed there as its guardian deity.
Her adoptive parents then became guardian deities too. The old bamboo cutter, who loved hawks, became Ashitaka Gongen. His wife, who loved dogs, became Inukai Myoujin.
The falcon is the hawk, the jackal is the dog, adapted to Egyptian-inspired style to better fit the desert kingdom theme of Arabasta.
Suppose the "D" are descendants of the moon people too? Or, they knew something related to the moon.
"D" is the shape of the half moon. The Waxing Moon (on its way to becoming full). If "D" is connected to the moon, then Luffy could represent the "union" of the sun and moon that I theorised above, and the trend/theme could continue to spread with other characters.

So through remissness or ignorance on the part of parent and teacher, the minds of children may never be awakened to a consciousness of having, within themselves, blessed treasures of innate and noble faculties, far richer than any outward possessions can be; they may never be supplied with any foretaste of the enduring satisfactions of knowledge; and hence, they may attend school for the allotted period, merely as so many male and female automata, between four and sixteen years of age. As the progenitor of the human race, after being perfectly fashioned in every limb and organ and feature, might have lain till this time, a motionless body in the midst of the beautiful garden of Eden, had not the Creator breathed into him a living soul; so children, without some favoring influences to woo out and cheer their faculties, may remain mere inanimate forms, while surrounded by the paradise of knowledge.
From Horace Mann's first annual report (1837)

"If you are in need of relief, this Unit is willing to oblige your desires, my lord."
Calypso was a recent addition to Chaldea's roster. Not truly a servant, but a divine automata, designed and created by the gods for the purpose of providing sexual relief to their soldiers. Her body a work of art in every aspect, imbued with matronly curves more than able to satisfy any mortal man.
Coming to Chaldea, she had been more than willing to provide aid in whatever way she could, and after hearing of a servant so burdened by an overactive libido that he was claiming other female servants for his bed with startling frequency, she just knew that she needed to do something to help. That she thought she could satisfy him, where gods and demons and angels had tried and failed, was perhaps a bit too arrogant...
Tumblr media
Of course the gods had sent something to intervene. An angel had been snatched and repurposed by him after all. Yet it was their folly that their creation had been turned into just another set of holes for Alibaba. He'd give her credit, she lasted longer than most. Her Saint's Graph was particularly strong and resistant to his Noble Phantasm, but resistant did not mean immune. In time she broke just as the others did and, just like the Fates and Avery, her core would be changed with one simple description: [Alibaba's Wife (EX)].
"That was so nice of those Gods to make something just for me, you know? Isn't this so much better than serving them, Caly? Being Alibaba's Wife is just the best, you know? I don't know if I can get you pregnant, but we'll just have to try lots and lots, you know?"
This, of course, being said as he was using her like little more than a toy, her face shoved down into his bed as his hips thrust that bludgeon he called a cock into her cum bloated pussy again and again at a pace he dared not perform on any of his other wives. They might break if he did that, but Calypso? If she was built to satisfy the Gods and their soldiers then surely she could take the abuse, a theory Alibaba was more than happy to test again, and again and again.

An Antique Singing Bird Box a true work of art with intricate craftsmanship and beautiful melodies. If you're a collector of rare and exquisite mechanical marvels, then the singing bird box is undoubtedly a must-have for your collection. This unique piece of art has been enchanting collectors for nearly two centuries and continues to do so to this day. As far as we know, only one of these remarkable devices exists, making it an incredibly rare find indeed. Crafted by the legendary Swiss craftsman Charles Bruguier, this particular singing bird box is a masterpiece of artistry and technology. The delicate flower petals and nature motifs are offset by vibrant colors, while the miniaturized bird with an ivory beak and natural feathers is a marvel of engineering. When wound, the front slide opens the bird lid and activates the movement and song of the finely crafted mechanical device. The detailing of the machinery is remarkable, while the pastoral scene adds a sense of old-world charm to any collection. It's no wonder that these highly sought-after pieces of art were a favorite of nobles and royalty alike during the 19th Century. Bruguier was a true master of his craft, and he only crafted 27 singing bird boxes a year from his small studio. While we cannot verify the origin of this particular piece, the matching artwork, and incredible technology speak to the master himself, or at least a loyal acolyte. The condition of this singing bird box is exceptional, considering the rarity of the item. The decoration inlaid in gold and silver pique work of different colors and mother-of-pearl is quite exceptional on this kind of cabinet, making this richly decorated singing-bird box quite unusual and very attractive. When the mechanism of this singing-bird box is activated, the oval lid opens automatically, and the bird appears, pivoting from side to side, flapping its wings, moving its tail, opening and closing its beak. When it stops singing, after its performance, it falls backward and goes through the grille. The movement is most likely a Going Barrell Movement, and the automata is working well, with only a tiny missing piece at the bottom of the box. If you're a collector of rare and exquisite mechanical devices, this singing bird box is a must-have. References in literature and museums that feature similar pieces only add to the allure of this singing bird box, making it a rare gem that any collector would be proud to own.
