think of post ob where after the dust settled they just return back to their respective loved ones and finally having to come clean about their emotions once and for all.

i just want an emotionally vulnerable scene for ace, mister allergic to facing his emotions, trappola even if its just a side moment that gets overshadowed later HHHH

*nodnod* Malleus is arrogant and desperate enough to think that no one could possibly relate to these tumultuous emotions of his. It’d be so fitting for Ace to confront him (and, by extension, his own feelings)—because not only does Ace have a track record of speaking out against others, but he has spoken out against Malleus before in Endless Halloween Night. In fact, he was the ONLY character to continue harping on the guy after everyone else basically forgave him. Ironically, that event was also the one that foreshadowed Malleus’s ability to stop time (which is true of the space contained in his briar barrier). And it all comes full circle…

For Malleus, I feel like him verbalizing his feelings isn’t really the main struggle. He seems to lack the awareness of what he’s feeling in the first place, as he doesn’t realize he’s lonely until Yuu points it out to him in 7-18. Later in 7-29, Malleus speaks openly with Silver about how powerless he feels to stop his subjects from feeling sorrow. It’s true that he has a tendency to project his feelings onto others (hence forcing everyone into happy dreams to avoid reality), but unfortunately projecting is not necessarily the same as empathizing. Rarely does Malleus do the legwork to truly understand others on an intimate level. I think that projection is a function of how Malleus understands and interacts with the world since this is something he does even when he’s not being overly emotional. For example, in his own Dorm Uniform vignettes he thinks it would be easier to bring everyone to him (so as to not miss a dorm meeting) even though this act of magic is considered highly rude by other mages. He does communicate his feelings, albeit sometimes via talking in circles or vaguely—namely in how he speaks with Yuu, sharing stories about his past (in book 7) or sharing about gargoyles to impart advice on how to overcome adversity (in book 3). More blatantly, he declares his intentions to Lilia before sentencing everyone to sleep in 7-37: “Not losing you!”

I also think… to some extent, Lilia already understands how Malleus might feel if he leaves. I get the sense that Lilia was in such a rush to go in the same way that you’d want to rip off a band-aid quickly. The more you prolong it, the worse the pain will be, that kind of logic. And before he intended to depart, Lilia tried to set things up so that Malleus would still be in good hands—inviting him to the farewell party, making sure people from all the dorms were there (perhaps so that Malleus can make new friends).

Malleus could more clearly state his feelings, sure. But I think the true root of the problem isn’t him not communicating—because even if he did so more openly, what would that resolve exactly? Time still moves forward, change still happens, his loved ones still leave him. It might be emotionally cathartic for Malleus, but ultimately he’s still left feeling lonely. The challenge for him is less putting his thoughts into words and more him learning to accept these life-altering changes instead of fighting or resisting them.

I still think that Ace could relate to Malleus in this regard, especially if they call back to 7-17, in which Ace cheerily redirects the conversation. While Deuce, Grim, and even Yuu discuss changes to their lives come summer break (going to the next grade, changing classes, Grim staying at school on his own, not being able to study together anymore), Ace challenges them with lines like, "C'mon, why do you guys have to get all mopey?", "[...] no need to join the mope patrol", " I declare Mopefest officially over!", and, "Frankly, I'm still skeptical any of this is gonna help us figure out a way to send [Yuu] home." It registers as Ace being in denial about the events about to unfold and coping by reassuring others by distracting them (when that reassurance is also aimed at himself), Ace is dishonest with himself and instead redirects those efforts to calling out others, which makes him come off as too mean or pushy even with his own friends (particularly Deuce). It would be nice to get an arc about him learning to be more vulnerable with his own emotions and better understanding those of others.

I get the feeling that Ace will get most of his actual character development and tearful reunion with Deuce, Yuu, and Grim within his own dream rather than in the final battle (the timing of the latter would just be odd). Hopefully Ace's dream written well since he's the last first year to be woken up. Save the best for last, you know?

I finished ME2 on Normal! (And did not die in the entire final section from when the Normandy crash-landed until the Freaky Deaky Human Reaper was officially tossed in the trash can! I'm actually very proud of that, considering how many times I died on Casual last time. 😱☺️)

Successfully romanced Jack, who really does have such a sweet romance once you get through her angry exterior. 🤗

I changed to the Cerberus armor for the final fight because I liked the stats it provided, namely a bump in health and heavy weapons' ammo. Hated not looking like my handsome N7 self, though. BUT I POWERED THROUGH THE PAIN OF BEING LESS FASHIONABLE.

😜I also played a little more Paragrade this time, always picking Paragon for the interrupts and major decisions but allowed myself a few Renegade dialogue options every so often, as a treat. 😉 I mean, Grunt in particular seemed to really enjoy getting the occasional Renegade pep talk, lol!

Some random caps I took along the way:

I adore Samara's eyes! ��� I also really love her relationship with Shepard, how you can feel that she respects you and considers you her friend, and that's something pretty rare for her. You can tell that she's so lonely and so bound by her Code that it's hard for her to connect to anybody else. I love that moment in ME3's Citadel Shore Leave where she'll tell you that she just wants to sit quietly with you for a moment. It just feels special and nice and it never fails to make me glad to be playing Shep as (mostly) Paragon. 🤗

Legion doing a little head tilt in the menu just made me d'awwwww at him. Who's a good Geth boi? Who's the bestest, goodest Geth boi EVAH? Yes, it's Legion, it is! 🤗🤗🤗

And I should add that the team of Legion and Zaeed proved to be very strong and capable in this run. I was impressed! It's such a shame that we meet Legion so very late in the game that we really don't get the chance to take him on many missions.

And speaking of missions, my experiment proved that no, you don't have to do the Lair of the Shadow Broker, Overlord or Arrival missions to still reach the end of the game. So I'll definitely be skipping those on Insanity just to try to cut down the amount of combat you have to do.

Annnnd speaking of Insanity: I was planning on doing another run to try out a different class but I think I'm going to try Insanity as a Sentinel first. If I fail miserably, can't advance, etc., then I'll start over with a new class back down on Normal and try that out. I'm thinking maybe Infiltrator or even just Soldier, but I really want to give Sentinel a try first. I like the Warp, Overload and Energy Drain powers and I think they'll come in handy when all enemies have shields and barriers. 😬

That's just so unnecessary, IMO. 😑

Anyway, being a Sentinel also helps me to feel closer to my fella.

And speaking of my boo, I didn't realize until I actually saw it in a Shiara vid, where Liara was there with Femshep at the start as the Normandy was being destroyed, that if Shepard has a love interest, THAT'S who appears to try to get you to evacuate. Both times I've gone through the ME2 opening, I was coming from a ME1 run where I didn't romance anyone and so, therefore, the game knew my true heart and gave me and Maleshep our guy to be with us in our time of need. *nodnods so seriously right now I can't even*

Okay, yeah, so probably Kaidan is Shep's second in command at this point? Or it's a rank thing that the game is using in lieu of a love interest? No, it's the POWAH OF MSHENKO LOVE, friends, it just cannot be denied! 💖💖💖😉

I know that it's not wise to do ME2's Insanity as a New Game+ because your enemies scale to your level, which will be high, but you have to earn all of your talent/power points again, I believe? So you'll be weak against even stronger enemies, yikes! Could be wrong but that's my best understanding at the moment.

Anyway, I'll be just returning back and importing in my previous ME1 Adept Shep and then choosing for Cerberus to rebuild him as a Sentinel. I think I'll try Miranda's romance while I'm here, too. I know I'll lose Jack or Miranda's romance in ME3, depending on which ME2 Shepard I then import, but I'd like to eventually playthrough as some of the other classes, so I'll be sure to romance one of them again in 2 and 3 so to get their couple of scenes, particularly those from the Citadel Shore Leave DLC.

I think you're right in the Sonic movies not trusting the game characters to hold the weight of their own story; I think that's why the villain emotional core shifted from Shadow to the Eggmen.

I liked the movie! I think they did a good job with the story they were trying to tell!

But I would have liked more of that story to have focused on Shadow than Eggman. (Although finishing an Eggman arc to send him off I completely understand, too.)

I have a lot of criticisms for the Sonic movies, but I also enjoy them a lot. There's a lot of creative choices that I don't like that they made, that I wish had been made differently. But the choices they do make are executed on very well.

Generally speaking, for me, watching the Sonic movies is like reading an amazingly well-crafted, easily digestible, and emotionally captivating fanfic... for a ship you don't like. I don't like how they characterized that guy. I don't agree with how they're presenting the cast. Their OCs are hit and miss. And I am 100% invested, when next chapter.

Many notes. So many notes. But I am having a good time nonetheless. I don't like what they did but I love the way they did it.

Getting into spoiler territory to talk about Eggman.

With Eggman, it was kind of a miracle that they even got him for this movie. Carrey announced his retirement in 2022 alongside the release of Sonic 2, so there was a long stretch of time when nobody even knew if he would be in Sonic 3.

There is a parallel universe where Carrey stuck to his guns, and Eggman's Maybe-Maybe-Not finale in Sonic 2 was the end of him. In that universe, I think we probably would have gotten a much deeper dive into Shadow, who would have to carry the weight of the film on his own shoulders. Possibly with Gerald, played by a new actor.

For the film we got, in a way, Sonic 3 feels like it was tailored to be the final word, not just on Eggman's character but also on the decades-long career of goofy antics and physical comedy that Carrey became famous for.

I think that's part of what makes Eggman's silly yet moving final sacrifice feel as powerful as it does. This isn't just Eggman taking the ARK for his last ride. It feels like Carrey saying farewell to the career and fandom he's built up, and that context makes it all the more emotionally gripping.

It's a strong sendoff.

And it also comes at the expense of a deeper focus on Shadow, whose climax ends up feeling rushed. Basically looking Sonic in the eyes and going, "You were mad like I was mad but you didn't take revenge. I see now that revenge is wrong. Let's go save the world from my revenge."

Two things can be true.

It's interesting to note that the film uses Gerald as, essentially, Shadow the Eggman. An embittered shadow archetype of Eggman turned to vengeance by grief over Maria's loss, who serves as the ultimate foe that Eggman must overcome.

This is most obvious with the parallel fights Sonic and Eggman have with Shadow and Gerald at the end. But I also don't think the film interrogates that idea very thoroughly, and I'm kind of okay that it doesn't? It's too busy having fun to be that serious.

Like. In place of that deeper analysis into Shadow, this movie is unapologetically meta. It's so meta, Eggman and Gerald literally look into the camera and point out that the same actor is playing them both at one point.

Which is sort of the point? There's kind of a purposeful tonal clash in this movie between Team Sonic, Eggman, and Stone versus Shadow and Gerald. Shadow and Gerald are grim and serious characters, except when Gerald is playing off of Eggman. Eggman brings out the goofiness of Gerald, while Shadow has the inverse effect on Sonic. Shadow makes Sonic darker, edgier, and less fun.

I described it before as "like making fart noises in a mortuary" and I stand by that. The film very intentionally feels like it's having an identity crisis over whether it wants to be a serious story of revenge, love, grief, and redemption or the kind of movie where a grown man in spandex has an elaborate performative dance number with his stunt double down a hall of death lasers. That is the tug-of-war that Sonic and Eggman are having with Shadow and Gerald.

It's that scene at the Chao Garden. Where the lights suddenly go out and it's like, oh shit, we're under attack. But then they come back up and it's just a funny stage show starting up. But also we are under attack, completely unrelated to the lights going out just now.

There are two conflicting payoffs to the suspense of that moment, playing out simultaneous to one another. It's like Sonic and Gerald had different ideas for how this scene should end.

Which is... really interesting to think about.

Coming out of the movie, my initial impression was that it was good, but not as good as Sonic 2. And, as a Sonic adaptation, I stand by that. Sonic 2 did the better job of adapting the Sonic material to film.

But as a creative exercise, as a piece of art, this movie's growing on me more. I think Sonic 3 is a fascinating performance piece.

Dusk looks around, the crowd a sea of unfamiliar faces and emotions. Her traveling companion is…gone.

(I…guess that’s true. Well, nowhere to go but forward!)

Dusk skips as she walks, finding herself in an oddly good mood. For some reason, she tends to be really cheerful in the railroads…it’d be a lot less fun otherwise, so it’s probably for the best.

Pretty soon she ends up looking for somewhere in town that won’t make her feel watched or force her to leave…not easy in a place full of NPCs. She ends up settling on a quiet, run-down looking bakery. It’s seemingly empty and desperately needs renovated, but somehow manages to be a little cozy despite it. The mismatched furniture and faint smell of baked goods gives it a sort of quaint, endearing charm. The only other thing of note is the somewhat forlorn young woman sitting behind the counter. She looks up when Dusk enters, and a pair of fuzzy rabbit ears perk up on her head.

���Oh! Um…welcome! Can I get ya anything?”

“No, actually, I was…mostly just looking for a place to sit for a moment and gather my bearings…my apologies, Miss.”

“Oh…um…can I ask you something, then?”

“Sure!”

“My sister went out to gather supplies a few days ago, and I haven’t seen ‘er since…She’s like me, but with a dress and a little taller and a little more…uh…harsh?”

“No, I haven’t, I’m sorry…funnily enough, I’m on a trip to find some friends of mine.”

The baker hesitates for a few moments, fidgeting with her hands.

“Could I maybe…join ya, then?”

“Absolutely you can!! I hate traveling alone, anyways…my name’s Dusk!”

“Harriet, nice to meet ya.”

The rabbit girl attempts a curtsy, before realizing she’s wearing overalls. She crosses her arms with a disappointed little huff. Dusk just laughs to herself, readjusting her satchel’s strap on her shoulder.

“Well, I guess we should get going then. Don’t want to keep them all waiting, Yunno?”

“Oh, that was fast- um- I’ll bring some bread!”

-one train jump later-

Harriet isn’t all that accustomed to talking so much. Old, harsh words she can’t really remember stick in the back of her mind, turning her tongue to lead. She is even less accustomed to having a companion that talks so much. Sitting there in the train, alone in the storage car with her little road trip of two, she finds herself half convinced that Dusk could quite literally never run out of topics to ramble about. At least she’s actually pretty good at words…even if Harriet doesn’t know what all of them mean.

“I mean, deer are adorable, and I’m not just saying that because I’m biased- have you ever seen one before?”

“Um…no…”

“Really? Well, now you have, kinda!”

She giggles to herself.

“But that is pretty strange…”

“I don’t see a lot of animals…I have seen bunnies, though! They’re so cute, I really wish I had one for a pet…though I don’t think that’s would’ve been possible before I was here.”

“…you’re human, right?”

“Yeah?”

“Do…do you miss it? Being out there?”

“…nah. I don’t. I mean, this place isn’t exactly pretty, but…ya know, I feel a bit more free, now.”

Now, I've mentioned before how I've never paid more than (now) $17 for a single game (PowerWash Simulator is totally worth it, though! Such a super chill, relaxing thing to play. A++ to infinity) and the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is *meep* $59.99. But ohhhhh frens, how I want this thing.

I feel awful for even considering paying this much for a game. I mean, I know that's not bad by new game comparison (Star Wars Outlaws Ultimate Edition at $129.99, anybody??? 👀👀👀). But I've stressed over (and have not yet pulled the trigger on) paying even $20 for a game before, so...

However. This isn't some new game that I might be totally disappointed in. This is one of my all-time super-duper favorite games getting a gorgeous remaster. Seriously, I love this game so, so, sooooo very much! It has squeezed its way into the top spot of my heart right next to the Halo MCC and Mass Effect: Andromeda and that is rarefied air indeed!

Seriously, though, that's showing how you can now answer Otis' calls without having to come to a complete stop, put down any survivors you're carrying, and then let the zombies eat you because you CAN'T MOVE or it cuts off the call. 😑 Being able to take calls on the run while you're carrying Precious Cargo*? AWWW YEAH!

Leah and I just saved every survivor in the mall, as a matter of fact! This is Ending A, which leads into Overtime Mode and the True Ending. Now I want to play again to get Ending B so to get the maximum number of people on the helicopter out of there: everybody shown plus Frank, Jessie and Brad. Dr. Barnaby has to die so you can save Simone later and Isabela won't escape with you no matter what. 😕Anyway, that's my next goal, to get a picture of everybody but those 2, alive, well and promising to come to Frank and Leah's wedding in the fall once the zombies are dealt with, lol! 😇😉

Back on point. Can I really justify paying $60 for a remaster of a game I already have? I dunno but mannnn, do I want this. There's a slightly cheaper version at $49.99 but it doesn't have the 17 extra costumes that the deluxe has annnnnnd I really want those, too. 😍

hello i was scrolling to see if you knew about the sk8 ova visual but i saw someone was talking to you about kagepro aaaaa i think i talked to you about it before? honestly i never got past the anime and mvs but the music has been among my top most listened to for years and the anime is pretty interesting, i recommend watching it on a very hot summer day to truly get the true mekaku city experienceTM (i should rewatch before summer ends, too)

Nodnod i remember you mentioning it! I was advised to keep the anime for last and watch the mvs first, but i havent made much progress there since yesterday (busyyy i havent even had time to read enstars...tragic for me, slash genuine)

I dont even remember the start of the week... i procrastinated a lot. Read a book in 2 days (y/n by ester yi, overall id say i liked it but the writing wasnt my cup of tea. It was giving faux pretentious but it's first person pov from an on purpose insufferable protagonist so it worked in the context), then worried about my graduation project (havent made much progress and i also need to write some reflections positioning myself in the industry...cant a girl just be vibing...), then friday was crazy busy with doctor appointments and other things (had some really good sushi tho, the highlight of that day), i have no memory of yesterday, and today we went to some family friends, which was very nice! We are the same age but they have very clear directions in life and are good at hustling so my mood couldve easily plummeted but then they talked about anime and food so👍👍👍lovely, things i could talk about for days. I'll send you photos of one of their cats that hanged out with us, he's sooo fat and orange! Thats about it...i am dreading having to do school stuff tomorrow. Im kind of just looking forward to social things i have planned this year more than school and graduation, and i hope those plans go well but i dont want to jinx anything. I always pull through and manage with school anyway. Except for the times i havent. But other than that things work out for me💥💥💥
