Day 1!

Day 1! Today is going better than I thought, considering I’m staying home to work on my essays! When I stay home, I typically snack throughout due to boredom and simply because it is right in front of me. “Boredom increases eating in an attempt to distract from this experience, especially among people high in objective self-awareness” (Moynihan, Van Tilburg, Igou, Wisman, Donnelly & Mulcaire, 2015) 

Since I slept in (silly time change), I only ate 1 mini muffin for breakfast. I am a person that always eats breakfast, and typically eat a heavier one to keep me full until lunch. Since I am trying to ration my food for the week, I will try eating only one muffin and see how my hunger subsides.

For lunch, I decided to make up some of the Mac and cheese I bought. Since I did not buy butter, it was made with just some milk! Personally, I really enjoy all types of pasta, especially this type of macaroni and cheese. However, it requires a pot, heat, water, milk, and normally butter to prepare. Therefore, if I was actually limited on money, I would probably lean towards more of an instant food with less additional ingredients. 

I only ate half the box, so I will have lunch for tomorrow already prepped! 

Today I’m trying to keep on top of my hydration and drinking lots of water! Drinking water will help keep me full longer and keep my mind off snacking! Unless I am moving around, I often forget to drink water.. oops. Today I kept my water bottle in my view to remind me to drink. The water I consumed did actually help curb my hunger a bit.. or it reminded me that I am not actually hungry, haha.

For supper I boiled 2 hot dogs on top of a slice of whole wheat bread. On the side I boiled up some spaghettini. At this point in time, I realized I did not buy any condiments, butter or sauce. So plain hot dogs on bread with a side of plain noodles it is 😂

I am a huge cheese lover. So having to eat this pasta with no parmesan or shredded cheese was a major disappointment. However, I think this week will be a good learning experience and will open my eyes to what some individuals actually have to live off of. Many won’t have the luxury of adding cheese to their meals as it is rather expensive, and doesn’t last very long in the fridge.   

Today I realized how much water it takes to make food! Water to boil pasta and hot dogs! This made me think, if I was in a lower income country with no access to clean water (or water in general), I wouldn’t be able to make these cheap foods! “Today, 785 million people – 1 in 9 – lack access to safe water” (Water.org, 2020). Since water is so essential in daily life, there is no doubt that in poor countries a lack of water is considered a crisis. Water.org (2020) discusses how so many individuals across the globe are affected by a lack of water, or poor water sanitation. To put this in perspective, “every 2 minutes a child dies from a water related disease” and since children are typically the ones to collect water for the household, they have less time for school and play which negatively affects their education (Water.org, 2020). 

I did make extra hot dogs and spaghettini for a quick meal in the coming days.

I refrained from snacks this evening due to a late supper. I am definitely a snacker, so even when I am not actually hungry, I find myself in the pantry finding popcorn or in the fridge finding some cheese or apples. Maybe for the week I will try and eat my meals later than normal to cut down time from supper to bed which will reduce the amount of evening snacks I need/ want.

I stayed consistent with the items purchased for today, but tomorrow will be a test due to outside influences like Tim Hortons. Although I do not rely on caffeine, it is a comfort having a warm coffee or tea to sip on throughout class, driving, watching TV, etc. Although I do have a few dollars left in my budget for a tea, I am going to try and save it for later on in the week as a ‘pick me up’.
