I love the reference to a cold in the nose… That’s exactly how I envision a beautiful woman with a cold that takes over her life for 3-4 days.

Something about how it centers itself in an area that’s usually unencumbered. We take a nose for granted… Not us :) but generally. We expect a nose to be clear and open for business. Clear to breathe thru, clear so we can taste food and smell the world around us. When a cold takes hold, this simple biological necessity is thrown off kilter.

On day one - our friend feels a slight nose tickle … a little scratchy throat; a sign of things to come. One sneeze is normal.. but 30 mins later? Yep something is brewing. Her first reaction is “oh no…I hope I��m not coming down with something” (yes Barbara Eden’s famous line when she catches cold on IDO Jeannie). Still makes me shudder at the sexiness of that line and her nose loaded in that episode sighhhhh.

The sneezes start. She take some vitamin C and Coldeze to fight it off… “I really dod’t deed a doze this week”… said nasally - as if she has any way to fight it off at this point. Any say in the matter. “Where are by tissues?… oh doh- I dodt have adythg but TP”. She goes to bed hoping for a good night sleep and some rest to clear it.

The sneezing starts at 3am- the toilet roll is at the ready. Her nose is closing - her throat hurts …her head aches and when she put her head down- her fresh cold closes the left side of the nose. The blowing starts because really there’s no other way to get any sleep. A closed nose means an open mouth and a bad sore throat the next day.

Our friend wakes at 6 AM for work… spent TP all over the end table from a night of blowing - yes, it’s now a full-blown cold in the nose… and the Odyssey is underway.

Something some hognose keepers don't realize is they have little protective covers they can use to close their nose.

When they close it all the way you might second guess yourself if you imagined a nostril there- they don't just disappear! ...do they?

They do if you're a species of snake that burrows! Those flaps close when they dig underground to keep their noses clear of debris.

It's one of the really neat things about hognoses- and if you care for one you should become familiar with what your pet's nose normally looks like open or closed.

More than once I've seen a post from a frantic pet caretaker who isn't sure why their snake no longer has nose holes. Most of the time they shut them while digging, so people see the dirt on them and think their pet is suffocating with their nostrils filled with dirt. Unless your pet has a pre-existing medical issue, the nostril scale is just a little dirty. Others think it's stuck shed. In either case it would be bad for your pet if you tried to remove it!

Despite being the same species, just like humans hognoses have variations in their facial features and their looks vary from each other. Scoria has a larger triangular shaped nostril. Sakura's are more seed shaped. There are quite a few differences in their head shapes and scales, not just in color. If you have a snake, I'm sure there will be quite a few differences between them and my girls! So get familiar with what they and their nose looks like, open and shut, so you know if it's normal or not if you see it look different in the future. Then you'll know if it actually is stuck shed, or things are as they should be.

And be sure to let them know how talented they are, and how neat it is they can do that. My girls always get happy when I tell them how cool they are, so I imagine most other snakes do too.

Part 2- Odyssey of a Fresh Cold in the Nose

Coffee tasted like cardboard- didn’t feel much like eating with this sore throat. Make up? What a joke- remembering the last cold and just blowin and blowin whatever coverage she had on her large nostrils.

Futility comes to mind - yes be happy that box of soft Kleenex cold care tissues arrived, and it won’t be a day of hard paper towel in the office rest room. Our friend thinks that maybe this is the date to stay home get back into bed with Netflix, her tissues and a cup of tea… But the Pinsky file is due and the marketing team is presenting. She has to make it… At least 1 PM, maybe this is one of those colds where she’ll feel better once she gets out and about… That always happens right ?

The ride to work is ridiculous. Reaching for that oversized tissue box—way too big for her purse—is borderline hazardous. Achummmmphhh. “Bless me,” she mutters, already regretting the need to practice her stifle sneeze. The pressure’s building—deep in the left nostril—and the dull headache creeping in isn’t helping. It’s only a 29-minute commute, but this is sneeze number five. Damn. This is shaping up to be a nasty nose cold. She wonders—-.

And work? It’s going to suck if it’s all out there for people to see—red nose, watery eyes, the whole parade. She sighs, wondering (not for the first time) who gave her this nose. Then—Achmmmmmmph!—one last blow before pulling up. A long, snotty, noisy mess that barely brings relief. Not satisfying. Just…nasal maintenance.

The good, juicy blows won’t come till day three or four….but by then, her poor nostrils will be clown-car red and sore to the touch.

She Parks and off to start the day. Kleenex cold care in tow and a deep sniffle already presenting.
