Why I don't think Alicia never had a right to be mad at Leighton:

It's pretty simple actually, Leighton didn't force Alicia nor did she trick her into dating her. It was Alicia's choice, and it's not like she wasn't aware of Leighton being closeted, it's not like Leighton hid that fact before dating. Sure, probably underplayed the way she felt about her openness about her sexuality but it was pretty clear that she was struggling, pretty paranoid and definerly not ready, and Alicia as someone who literally goes to a LGBTQ+ group support should know that. And out of all that, she was Leighton's first girlfriend too, where's the care and understanding ? some people of the community seem to forget how hard it is to come out.

That's inevitable when the campaign gave off vibes that were so strongly at odds with its assertion that it wasn't about which fic is bad.

I think the other problem is that none of us have any actual answers other than better blocking features or more ways to customize search for a given user.

How do you solve racism?

I don't think callouts are that useful most of the time, though I will signal boost when fairly credible posts about situations like that TOG one come around. I think privately giving friends support is useful, but that's not something you do at scale or that you mandate for other people. I don't think that shadowbanning fic by removing it from basic AO3 searches is desirable. I don't think increasing one ship vs. another's content is meaningful. I do think posts about gross media tropes can be useful if they're well-researched.

I was watching a speech by Beverly Daniel Tatum the other day, and she was talking about strategies that work offline. A lot of it boiled down to raising kids in multicultural neighborhoods and sending them to diverse schools. She had some examples where it had worked, but getting people to stop being NIMBY assholes so that housing and schools can actually be fixed is extremely difficult.

I think a lot of problems in fandom are symptoms that show up far downstream of the actual causes, and it's not that easy to solve anything here. It's not that we shouldn't oppose racism, but most of the suggestions I've seen just don't address what's actually going on (like canon screwing over a character and making them less popular as a consequence). A lot of fandom activism strikes me as rats in a barrel. People cling to the illusion that they can fix things here because it's less daunting than the reality that they're going to have to fight Hollywood or that they're not going to see that much success in their lifetime even if they do their activism well.

A nonwhite friend said something to me the other day about just wanting to stop hearing about anti-racist activism in fandom, full stop. They don't come here for that, and they're tired. I think it's a common sentiment and is part of why more of the informed people don't weigh in.

I post the majority of asks I get. If people have stories about fandom racism, I'll post them. It's just that the ones I've gotten are all like "I was harassed for writing my own identity wrong" with a plea to chill the fuck out and stop assuming things.

If people have practical suggestions, I'll post those too. I just think few of us have any really useful ideas.

The best friend really wanted to watch a delightful film made with love, so we decided to sit down and watch Jupiter Ascending.

We'd both only seen it once before, though we did remember certain parts very clearly. We're definitely not of the "actually it's good" school of thought, but we do think it's generally beautiful, sometimes intriguing, and there are occasional glimpses to another reality in which a good Jupiter Ascending exists. But in a way, it's more of a joy as a bad film—not just because it's bad, or so bad it's good, but because it's bad in such a unique and charming way while very committed to its vision. So it was definitely the experience we were looking for.

Random Thoughts on The Lost City Movie

This is the best anti-cringe movie.

Like, honestly, this will kill every urge you have to give in to the cringe. Ladies and gentlemen, cringe has left the building - it has been taken out back and shot like a lame horse.

I love Sandra Bullock now more than when she was in Speed, and yes, I was alive when that came out.

Daniel Radcliffe is that dude to whom unfettered success came early in life and now he just lives his best life fucking around and doing as he pleases. (In this instance what he wanted was apparently to be a Bond villain.) I don't think it makes up for the childhood he lost, but I say good on him.

That Brad Pitt cameo is gorgeous because it turns the action hero trope on its head and punts it out the window. (insert dreamy sighing here)

I, too, would love anyone who brought me better footwear. And tried to be really supportive in all ways. And understood when I acted out because I was feeling all upset.

Going back to the footwear, I have mad respect for anyone - man, woman, neither, or both - who can act like a civilized human being when subjected to heels of any kind. I know that going from stilettos to high-heeled boots is an upgrade, but sheesh.

Gosh, I have absolutely forgotten that Channing Tatum *dances* (please excuse me, I have never seen any of the Magic Mike movies). Before this film, I wasn't aware of how well he could actually lean into the cheese; good choice for a sympathetic male lead for this story.

There's nothing more romantic than lying with your sweetheart on top of dead people, workshopping your portmanteau name. (It makes sense in context, really)

I hope liking it on Netflix won't screw up my algorithm. I don't put much stock in it, but still.

I just feel it would be predicable if Tatum truly turned on Lyra out of hate. Say what you will about HBK if you don’t have a good opinion (I looove him) but he clearly knows how to craft great stories. I’m picturing that Tatum will do everything to become Lyra’s most hated enemy, do heinous things, ruin her career advancement… and it’ll be because she cares too much to see Lyra loss herself. Tatum realised half-way through it was the title that was making her little bird change, more angry, less compassionate etc.

I think it suits Tatum’s character to do this out of her twisted sense of love. We’ll have the promo before the big match at the next PPV, and Tatum will reveal it all.

tatum’s character—from what i’ve interpreted—is presented as intuitive. i love the idea of her concluding that just like those before her, the championship was going to corrupt lyra and turn her into a monster. it’s like that one quote, “you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

and there’s evidence to support tatum’s motivations, like when she went “but that’s not really you, i know you.” could be paraphrasing but that’s essentially what she said. when she screamed “it doesn’t belong to you anymore,” tatum looked and sounded overjoyed.

but lyra losing the championship isn’t enough. because she’s gonna keep chasing after roxanne, which means she’s gonna keep spiraling. in tatum’s mind, if it continued, she would’ve seen lyra fall down the same route as roxanne did.

about jey v jimmy, tbh i think the whole story was done… eh. poorly? it wasn’t awful awful, but it didn’t help that after giving a bullshit reason for jimmy to turn on jey, their eventual match’s momentum was halted, since they waited until like, three weeks before to even start setting up the match. meanwhile lyra v tatum has been consistent in telling a great story and has a believable reason behind the betrayal.

on a side note.. who’s to say lyra’s not gonna double down? i think it’d be a fun turn of events if lyra just got more demented, to the point that tatum—who is presented as the villain—actually becomes the hero/anti-hero by the end of the story. i think there’d need to be a third party to make that happen. maybe roxanne, but there’s a handful of phenomenal heels on nxt. if i had to choose, i’d go with blair. not only is there that nxt uk connection, but blair was a fundamental part of roxanne’s own spiral. ik she’s got her thing with sol ruca rn but that doesn’t mean she can’t be in more than one story.

yeah! do also check my book rec tag because ive probably answered something similar to this at Some point. also bear in mind this is specific to the roman republic (and tbh mostly the late republic) because i just do not care. like rome kept happening but who Give a shit. look at it. it's got emperors. anyway

a companion to the roman republic ed. nathan rosenstein and robert morstein-marx and the cambridge companion to the roman republic ed. harriet i. flower are both absolutely massive and full of v good introductions to a variety of topics! get basic understanding of a thing! nice!

some specific Books I Like on individual topics: the rise of rome: from the iron age to the punic wars by kathryn lomas covers the earliest roman Anything up to the third century And grounds that history in the context of what was going on in the rest of italy at the time. roman republics by harriet i. flower is about different ways of periodising the history of the republic(s?) and in doing so gives a good overview of major changes to the political system. party politics in the age of caesar by lily ross taylor is Quite Old but imo still holds up as an introduction at least.

you could also consider Picking A Guy and reading a biography. love it when a life is put into the context of wider history while also existing as a more coherent narrative on which to pin that history. some that are fun are sulla: the last republican by arthur keaveney, the patrician tribune by w. jeffrey tatum about clodius pulcher (the introduction is also suchhhhhh a good summary of 'party' politics and why that's not a great way to think about it!), clodia metelli: the tribune's sister by marilyn b. skinner about clodius' sister who was maybe also lesbia from catullus' poetry, cato the younger: life and death at the end of the republic by fred k. drogula, fulvia: playing for power at the end of the roman republic by celia e. schultz (i have been meaning to read this one lol), and brutus: the noble conspirator by kathryn tempest.

my anti-recommendation is rubicon by tom holland No i have not read it Yes i think it sucks. L + i have been shown excerpts of the bad prose + the republic had fallen apart way before caesar crossed the rubicon + the author has a whole bunch of bad takes + read attis (1996) instead

Idc if LeviMika antis think the ship is gross. Technically, all Eldians are related to each other due to being descendants of Ymir the Founder. If Levi Ackerman and Mikasa Ackerman are "related" because of the same last name, then so are celebrities like Shaquille and Tatum for having the last name O'Neal. Besides, Levi and Mikasa have never referred to each as cousins or siblings. Nobody in the series has ever said that, or called them father/daughter or uncle/neice. Besides I like the ship because Mikasa doesn't suck up and gush over how strong Levi is like other characters do, and they're the only ones who can have sex with each other without shattering the other person's pelvis.

Fictober 2023 27: “I don’t know if they will accept this.”

Tatum smiled as she flitted her way around the antique shop. Her customers gave her a hard time for not using a feather duster, but she found that cans of condensed air just worked better on the heavier and intricate pieces. Not to mention that on slow days it was fun to turn the can upside down and leave trails of frost on the windows.

Setting aside her anti-dust weapon of choice, she turned towards a very large and thin crate she had gotten delivered the day before. Grabbing a small pry bar from under the counter, she carefully worked the top lid of the crate open. Nails driven deep into fresh wood creaked loudly as they were pulled free. It was a lot of work, but eventually she did mange to get it open.

Carefully, she slid a very old painting out of the crate, setting it up on the back counter and taking a step back to look at it more closely.

“Huh... That looks like Mister Z!”

Mister Z was what she called one of her browsing regulars. She didn't really call him a customer because he had never bought anything. He would come in, look around, see something interesting, then take the old looking leather pouch out of his pocket, look inside and mumble, “I don't know if they will accept this” to himself, then shuffle back out of the door.

She called him Mister Z because on one particularly hot day, her air conditioning had been broken in the shop. She had been sweating like mad when he'd entered the shop, looking calm, cool, and dry as a bone. When Tatum had used a cleaning rag to dab the sweat from her forehead, he had taken a monogrammed handkerchief that had the letter Z on it and dabbed at his own. The whole situation had been so weird that it just stuck with her.

In the painting, he had long dark hair streaked with gray and he had his arms around the waist of a young lady. Brushing aside some of the curly wood shavings revealed the figure's face. She froze as the woman in the picture was the spitting image of her.

She heard the bell above the door ring and a chill ran down her spine. Shuffling footsteps became more sure and steady as they strode across the polished wood floors. She glanced up into the security mirror and saw the door close, but there was nobody there.

She slowly turned to see Mister Z looking right at her, his eyes had a reddish glow about them. His voice was deep and sonorous as he smiled at her.

“I don't know if you will accept this, but we have so much to talk about, Tatyana...”
