Thena asking gil how human reproduction works. Now that she knows what "the thing" in his pants is for, she wants to know what exactly is between her legs and why it feels so funny.

Gil groaned, turning over in bed--trying to turn over.

"Gil!"

He blinked, finding a curtain of blonde hair around him as he stared up at the light of his life. He sighed, "yes, Angelfish?"

"I need to ask you something."

Light of his life, he reminded himself; he rubbed his eyes, "can it not wait until morning?"

"No," she whispered, still perched over him like a predator waiting to pounce. She waited until he was done rubbing his eyes to ask, "how does human reproduction work?"

"What?!"

She winced, his sudden outburst and the volume of it hurting her much more delicate senses.

"Sorry, sorry," he rushed, holding his hands over her ears and then her cheeks. She frowned at him, "I'm sorry, Thena. I just...didn't expect that."

"Well?" she implored, looking at him with those eyes. He had never really gotten to see them like this, but they had a faint, almost gentle glow to them in the dark.

He sighed again; it wasn't as if this was out of nowhere. But had he been doing his very best to avoid it for as long as possible?--yes. "What makes you ask that, sweetheart?"

Thena didn't move off of him, but did lean back from all fours to sitting on him. "I...was thinking."

Gil's hair stood on end.

"Of," she looked down at his chest, her finger moving through his chest hair idly. "When we were on the couch."

Gil blushed, but did his best not to rush, nor discourage her. He nodded, "okay."

"I have never taken a mate," she admitted quietly. She had said so before, but a veneer of vulnerability came with this statement, as well as what followed, "but I find myself...curious."

"Right," Gil sighed, looking up at his ceiling for a second, trying to think of how to approach the delicate subject.

"I know how it works for mers," Thena pressed on, leaning closer to his face again. "I have asked, I know what happens when one takes a mate, especially for reproductive purposes. But I have to imagine it's very different for humans."

"Very different," Gil murmured, mostly as he tried to think of how to retain his dignity and also answer her question honestly.

Like Thena said, she was a grown woman, and she wasn't so naive about mating and its many forms. She knew approximately how it worked. And as embarrassed as he was, he had no desire to lie to her or tell her some bullshit birds and the bees nonsense.

He adjusted himself on the bed, wrapping his arms around her. He could tell she had been asleep in the tub because her skin was cooler to the touch than normal. Sometimes it did make him wonder how she managed to get out of water so silently, though.

"So, the, uh," Gil blushed, grateful for the dark and the angle they were in allowing him to avoid her eyes. "The part of me-"

"The penis?"

"That," he sighed. It was better than 'dick'., he supposed. "It becomes engorged with blood. That's what makes it hard."

"And this happens during arousal," Thena continued. If anything, how straightforward she was did actually help to lessen the embarrassment of things. It did quite the opposite of set the mood, currently.

"I see." And she had seen--she did see.

Gil shifted under her, trying to keep his mind out of the gutter and on the task at hand. "When the act of intercourse ends and the male reaches climax, he...ejaculates."

"The white stuff," Gil confirmed, unwilling to let her go further with that statement. "For procreation it's done, um, in the-"

Gil's eyes strained in the low light as colour rose in her cheeks. She looked down at his bare chest again, and then the blanket which separated his skin from hers. She was wearing his shirt, at least; that was the rule. If she was wearing her legs, a shirt was required.

"I feel," she started and paused still, shifting her weight on top of him. Her knees squeezed against his ribs faintly.

Gil's heart picked up speed.

"Different."

He swallowed, trying to keep his eyes on hers, and on what she was saying, and not on the beautiful body seated on top of him. He nodded, "o-okay. What feels, uh...different?"

Thena wasn't really that shy when it came to most things. She didn't have the same sense of shame about bodies and their functions that humans did. Seeing her sheepish or embarrassed usually indicated something more personal to her.

Thena gulped as well, holding his eyes as her hips pressed into his, "h-here."

Gil held in a groan as she grinded against him through the blanket. "W-What feels different there, Angelfish?"

She looked away from him again, but her hips didn't stop. She braced herself with her hands again, nails digging into the bed on either side of him. "I don't know. But it feels...urgent."

Gil gulped. He had been thinking about this since that day on the couch. He had thought about it in passing before, of course, but always scolded himself. He had no business impressing anything onto Thena if she didn't bring it up on her own.

He didn't even know she had a...a functioning...well, clearly she did.

Gil let out a moan as Thena continued to move above him, both of them seeking friction against what separated them. He gripped her hips, "Cuddlefish, slow down."

"But," she whimpered, biting her lip but obeying. She looked down at him, "I want-"

Gil gripped her hips in his hands, under the shirt. He gulped as a certain scent reached his nose. He looked up at her, "Thena, do you want this?"

She nodded, diving down to kiss him. She pressed her hips against his again, gasping as the shape of him became more clear through the blanket. "Yes!"

Gil groaned, all but humping her through his blanket like a teenager dry rubbing for the first time. But it felt damn good for something so simple. And everything with Thena felt good.

Thena pulled his shirt off over her head, "my skin burns."

Under any other circumstance, he would be alarmed. But he knew exactly what he meant, this time. "It's okay."

Thena kissed him deeper, her tongue looking for more. Her tongue was a little more pointed and a little longer than his, actually. Now that he could feel it so acutely, that was to say.

Gil sighed as he felt her breasts press against his chest. The more their hips moved, the more ruffled it became. He groaned into her mouth as her breasts met his bare chest.

"Gil," she whimpered at the new sensation. She ran her fingers through his hair, kissing him feverishly. "What is that?"

"Here," he grunted, pulling her other hand off his neck and guiding it to her breast for her. "Touch that."

Thena whined as she did. "W-What-"

"You good?" he whispered, pulling her off of the blanket on top of him and rolling them over. He manoeuvred the blanket around her completely limp weight beside him until she was also tucked in. "Thena?"

"Hm," she responded again, blinking those eyes at him. It was incredible to think that he would be able to tell if she was looking at him or not, even in the darkest dark.

"Angelfish, how do you feel?" he asked softly, looking for any signs of distress, or being overwhelmed, overstimulated. This was just as important a first as any of her other firsts as a human.

Thena shimmied over to him, kissing him languidly under the blanket. She really could purr, and it reverberated through him gently as their lips met. "That was nice."

He looked at her again, "nice?"

"Nice," she conceded, shrugging one of her shoulders. Some of her scales were popping up on her shoulders, and he was delighted to think that her concentration in the midst of things had...slipped.

Her finger traced around his nipple, which she had just discovered did actually have a purpose.

Rey Gives No F*cks About the Grandfather Paradox

Okay so since nobody’s suggested a fic under these terms, I ended up expanding on this post on discord and things snowballed. We kept to the basics of the entire plot revolving around Rey really hating her grandad and leveraging her blood relation to not be unalived about it.

The basic thing I absolutely need is this: Rey gets thrown back to the middle of the clone wars, and the subsequent plot leans in really heavily on her being, genetically-via-clone-dad, the daughter of the guy running the entire galaxy.

Nobody knows what to do with her.

The timing is mid-TCW for the past (because I want Ahsoka there) and vaguely between Episodes 8 and 9 because I... never watched E9 and don’t want to worry about the timeline. The only things that matter is that Luke is dead (he can die as he did in canon) and that Rey knows she’s Palp’s granddaughter (not the way she does in canon).

We'll say Luke found out from Anakin's panicked force-ghost and just went "well, fuck, okay, I should tell her this before she ends up in a situation like mine and finds out mid-battle or something."

Luke, prior to time-travel: Okay, so, now that I'm dead I know some things I didn't before. Like who your parents were. In the interest of full disclosure because I was in a very similar situation and I don't want you learning the way I did, I'm just going to come right out and say that your father was a clone was Sheev Palpatine. Rey: ... Luke: Are you okay? Rey: I don't know who that is.

(She grew up on Jakku, the history education was a little subpar.)

Setting The Scene

Imagine Rey showing up during or immediately before the clone wars. There’s this phenomenally powerful feral teenager from a desert backwater who tells you that if you ran a paternity test, it would probably pop up the Chancellor. She may or may not bring up cloning. She accuses said Chancellor of being a Sith Lord.

Your other phenomenally powerful feral teenager from a desert backwater, who may not be a teenager anymore but only barely, is very offended by this because Palpatine’s a Very Nice Old Grandfather Figure, but also he’s a little full of side-eye because if the blood test comes back as proof, then Palpatine had a kid and didn’t even know about them, or lied to Anakin, and that’s! Bad! Family’s important!!!

Palpatine hears about this daughter he apparently? Has? And is very confused because the timing doesn’t match up with ANYTHING he was doing, so the kid isn’t natural, and he says as much. (There is an explanation! It’s not a correct explanation, but he does come up with one.)

Finn and Poe and BB-8 all get dragged along because why not have the gang there? Nobody that’s already born, because [handwave] conservation of souls or something, IDK, point is the only person dragged along that’s even remotely close to already existing is Luke’s Force Ghost, who mostly hangs around begging Rey to be less impulsive. Finn is good because he is a nice polite boy, but for actual useful information they need Poe. The unfortunate situation is that the three do not land together. They land at the same time, in completely different corners of the galaxy. This means that nobody is there to curb Rey being her most impulsive self.

Time travel Rey knows two things. Luke’s dad ends up evil. Palpatine has always been evil.

She can solve one of these problems by killing the other, yes?

Rey: Ready to Rumble

See, the initial idea was this: Rey tried to break into the senate to kill Palpatine, got arrested, and then used the "he's biologically my father" card to get out of jail free. (Force Ghost Luke follows her like “please take five seconds to think this through.”)

But.

But.

It would be very, very, very funny if The Force just dumps her in a flash of light in the senate building and she just attacks Gramps on sight. Just a shouted "YOU!" and no-hesitation attempted murder.

Palpatine has no idea what's going on.

Rey took maybe two seconds to get identity confirmation and then started swinging.

Of course, she gets arrested. There are Master Jedi in the Senate. There are Clone Troopers. Palpatine isn’t the weak old man he pretends to be. Of course she’s stopped.

But she isn’t executed in time for Palpatine to stop her from ruining his entire reputation.

Immediately after Rey fails to kill her Shitty Granddad, Luke's ghost shows up and begs her to not talk about the Sith thing because it will completely undermine everything she's trying to do. Pass off the attempted murder as something else!

Rey, panicking: "that fucker left me on a desert planet for 10 years!" "You owe me 19 years of child support you son of a Hutt!"

The Jedi have to do the investigation, because the girl showed up with a laser sword, and the conversation is, uh... interesting. (“Where did you get that lightsaber?” “I got it from a mysterious old pirate lady I never met before. I don't know, I was being shown around by a smuggler and a Wookie.”)

Interviewer: Why did you try to assassinate the Chancellor? Luke: Say it wasn't assassination. Rey: It wasn't assassination. Int: You weren't trying to kill him? Luke: Assassination has to be politically motivated. Rey: This was, um... not political. Assassination is political, right? Int: You mean this was personally motivated? Rey: Yes. Int: I see. What personal motivation? Luke: Jakku! Rey: He's my grandfather. Int: ... Rey: Possibly father. Nobody was very clear on that. Int: ... Luke: Tell them to run a paternity test. Rey: Oh hey, a blood test would tell us which, right? Int: ............ Rey: I spent ten years as an orphaned scrapdealer on Jakku. He's my father. I'm kind of a little angry. Int: ........... Luke: Good job, kid. You bought yourself some time. Int: I'm going to get a medic to see about that parternity test.

Obviously, it comes back positive. Congratulations, Sheev, you’re the father.

Rey comes with a ready-made built-in excuse for hating Palpatine that nobody can question or fault her for!

Rey, pouring Truth into the Force: I didn't even know I was related to the Chancellor until a few months ago, but it's his fault I grew up the way I did, and he should take some responsibility!

The entire thing is mostly kept hush hush but someone leaks it to the press and Palpatine's ratings tank.

"Chancellor, I think we'll need to waive family visitation until she wants you a little less dead." "I would like to find out why she wants me dead, and indeed, where she came from." "...sir, for your own safety--"

Who would win? A master plan years in the making spanning decades of manipulating and work? or One (1) paternity test

"Okay, so, Rey Palpat--" "Ew, no, I don't want his name." "You--okay. Sure, we can understand that. Is there a name you would prefer to put on the paperwork?" Rey, who would have gone by Skywalker in honor of Luke but can't do that when Anakin is right there and all: "Can I think about it?"

Rey: I don't know what I want my last name to be but I know I don't want his, and most of the people I’d want a name from have famous families like you... Luke's ghost, pointing out the Literal Nobody that she cares about a lot: How about Solo? Rey: ...Solo, then.

(A few months later she runs into Poe again and he offers for Finn and Rey to both take his name because honestly they need SOMETHING but at that point she’s already decided on Smuggler Dad.)

Backtrack a bit. We’ve got a bigger cast.

They all arrive separately. Poe, for one, does better than Rey, who is aiming for a murder, but not quite as well as Finn, who is currently being adopted and hidden like a secret cat by a bunch of Alpha Clones on Kamino. He vibes with the names-or-numbers thing. He doesn’t necessarily tell them where and when he’s from, but he’s very sweet and a great liar and they adopt him wholesale anyway.

The Finn situation is just... "Buir Ti, we need you to hide this man, we've decided he's our little brother but if Nala Se finds out she'll make him leave."

Of course, this leads into Shaak Ti teaching Finn how to Jedi.

Maybe consider Finn needing to almost be tricked into learning Jedi things because he willfully forgets it could apply to him. Finn does not like to think of himself as special, which is super valid, but frustrating for Shaak Ti when it comes to, you know, getting him to acquire knowledge. Finn's training at some point is "here, levitate objects with the Force to entertain the tubies." It’s a lot easier to convince him to practice when it involves the babies.

(Everyone on Kamino looked at Finn and went “oh I love him I’m keeping him and teaching him things.”)

Poe, meanwhile, buys the trust of Anakin Skywalker via R2D2 declaring BB-8 the absolute most baby of droids. R2D2 met BB-8 three hours ago but.

"Hey Obi-Wan this is Poe I met him like five days ago but R2D2 says he checks out because his droid is a baby." "That's nice, Anakin, did you know the Chancellor has a daughter who tried to assassinate him in broad daylight yesterday? Because guess who had to stop the Chancellor from getting assassinated by his daughter in broad daylight yesterday."

A summary so far:

Finn, on Kamino: Hey, um, I don't know where this is, but it's not where I was a few minutes ago. Do you think you could get me a comm? What's your name? Poe, on [dice roll] Denon: Oh, hey, you're General Skywalker? Nice to meet you, I'm so sorry about my droid, she's a little excitable and thought your R2 unit looked like a friend of hers-- Rey, on Coruscant: DIE, GRANDFATHER

Finn: [Peacefully vibing on Kamino, unaware of the chaos and bonding with the clones] Poe: [Trying to explain how he knows someone who tried to kill the chancellor and defend Rey] Rey: [Arrested for trying to kill the chancellor]

Just... just...

Anakin: Some guy ended up lost on base yesterday with his droid, how’s your day going? Obi-Wan: I had to stop someone who claims to be the chancellors daughter from murdering the chancellor after she seemingly blinked into existence in the Senate building. Poe: 😐

(Poe: Oh, so that's where Chaos^2 went.)

Poe: In her defense, she is his... well we don't know if she's his daughter or granddaughter, but she's definitely related to him, and she definitely grew up in a shitty situation that was his fault, so...

(Poe is trying very hard to explain this and not get arrested on the military base.)

As you’ve probably guessed, what's especially funny about all of this for me is the fact that Palpatine is fully aware that this girl shouldn't exist, but can't find a single piece of evidence about where she came from. He didn't start any experiments that could result in a female child, and he didn't have sex in that period of time, so where the hell--

Rey spends so much time in jail... BUT they do eventually assign her a Jedi Master. Possibly before she actually proves her evil grandfather is in fact evil. Most votes went to either Plo Koon or Obi-Wan. Plo, because he’s dad-shaped, and Obi...

"Obi-Wan, you already raised one feral desert child with implausible amounts of power, you handle this." Rey in return is very "Sweet, you vaguely remind me of Master Luke," and nobody knows who the hell she's talking about. Obi-Wan is NOT on board with this plan, she'd really be better off with Plo or like........ Mace.

Reunion Tour

What I need out of this is the eventual Finn and Rey reunion scene that is just excited screaming while someone in the background explains to Shaak Ti that yes this is apparently Palpatine's terrifyingly force-sensitive daughter who hates him.

(Finn senses Rey’s approach and just. Gathers the everyone to wait. He’s just :D REY MY FRIEND REY GUYS MY FRIEND REY IS COMING.)

Anakin shows up with Poe--just a guy who signed on to the military, no big deal--and then Poe and Rey are EXCITED and everyone's just like "Cool, how do you know this literal terrorist child?" And Poe has to scramble and "Uhhhhhhhhhhhh she saved my droid from a scrapheap once and BB-8 is basically my child so I owe her one."

Rey knows that Anakin ends up evil so she’s maybe not actively hostile but definitely very “I’m watching you.” That said, she vibes with him on a lot of things that he maybe doesn’t actively notice.

Rey picks up a snake, snaps off the head for venom avoidance, and starts biting off chunks. Obi-Wan's reaction: [undisguised horror] Anakin and Ahsoka: Ooh, where'd you find that? (Obi-Wan: And now I’m up to three feral children.)

What Does Palpatine Even Do?

OBVIOUSLY at a certain point, Palpatine is just phoning up every ally he has to figure out who broke protocol to synthesize a daughter for him.

So of course, Palpatine blame Plagueis.

She'd have been born five or so years before Naboo, just a few years younger than Anakin. It's such an EASY theory to build a conspiracy around. It is ENTIRELY WRONG, but it’s plausible! And anyone who might have been involved to say otherwise is probably dead!

A random bio-kid shows up you can’t possibly have contributed genes to? Maybe it’s the evil bio spark that did it.

Palpatine tries to placate her with the ‘my genes were stolen for an experiment and I didn’t know’ thing. It doesn’t work because her actual main complaint is he’s evil in her future but he tries.

It'd be a struggle to even get access to her, because of the aforementioned “maybe don’t try to talk to the daughter(?) that hates you” thing, but you know who Palpatine does have access to? The Chosen One.

Rey kind of decides on her favorites early on (she gravitates to Dad Energy and Sad Old Men so Plo and Obi-Wan are on her list, and that means decent time around Anakin and Ahsoka). It's really easy to talk Anakin into helping to some degree because "he'd like to connect to a daughter he never knew" and "a child of her power on a planet like that, you'd know her struggle, my dear boy" and so on. Anakin tries to connect! He tries to play up Sheev’s kind political work and how it can’t have really been his fault! It doesn’t work. Rey does not believe a word of it. Mostly she doesn’t even seem to hear him.

Rey's just like "...oh right, you're the melted mask that Kylo Ren was always ranting about," which means absolutely NOTHING to Anakin, but he mentions it to Palps, who loses his goddamn mind trying to figure out what she's talking about, because it also means absolutely nothing to him.

Here’s the thing: Rey’s already decided that Obi-Wan is cool, because Luke said so, and Plo Koon is dad-shaped, and she also gravitates towards earnest kindness in general, like she made friends with Finn real quick, so Ahsoka? Already getting along great.

She doesn’t dislike Anakin, really, he isn’t evil yet, he’s just... meh. She’s a little suspicious and she likes him less than the others but... Anakin.

Rey, to Anakin: You are my least favorite. Anakin, to Palpatine: YOUR DAUGHTER HATES ME???

And he goes from “she’s a lil standoffish” to “she doesn’t like me” to “she hates me” as is normal for Anakin.

It’s just an escalation of this one time Palpatine wants Anakin to not have rifts and trust issues with a person, at least not until later, because he needs information.

Meanwhile, that very moment, Rey is just like "huh, nobody here is listening to me about how make a sixth-hand carburetor work, where's Luke's dad?"

Anakin is venting to Palpatine about how hard it is to talk to Rey, and she's over in the Temple just like "Hey, that guy was useful last time, I should ask him," but also she only ever thinks of him as Luke's Dad.

(At one point, Obi-Wan is having a bit of a break down, and then Anakin starts having a breakdown about that, meanwhile the clones are (badly) trying to hide Finn behind their backs, Rey is watching Ahsoka practice and being like "I want two lightsabers," and Poe is trying to keep R2 from stealing BB-8 and Force Ghost Luke is just face palming in the background.)

(Rey deserved a saber staff, maybe one that can detach and turn into a jar’kai set. Possibly a pike. Mostly I just wish she got more chances to whack things with a big stick.)

Synopsis: A freak end of the world incident leads to meeting your two best friends, Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff.  While your friendship with the two Avengers is anything but conventional, they are your all-time favorite people.  When you find out that Clint and Natasha want to start a family but have exhausted all their options, you realize your powerset might allow you to give them what they want.  Having your best friends’ baby might seem like a good idea on paper, but when you are as close as you, Clint, and Natasha are, will doing something so intimate mean feelings get a little mixed up?

Chapter 19

Time seemed to pass in a blur of sedation and panic.  You were kept in the medbay the whole time with the baby being monitored as well as keeping you sedated enough to sleep and keep your powers working.  It was foggy and confusing but you knew that regardless of how much time passed, Natasha stuck by your side.  She slept either pressed up against you, squeezed into your hospital bed, or sitting up in the chair beside it.  She ate her meals with you, sharing the tray table.  She only left your side to use the bathroom, take a shower, or to have hurried conversations in the hall with medical staff or members of the Avengers team.

You knew a little about what was going on with Clint.  You knew that Kate and her team had found a trail.  You knew they were sure he was alive, you knew they thought they were close, yet every day he didn’t come home, you felt less sure that he ever would.

The doctors were concerned about you and the baby.  You hadn’t reached what they called full-term yet, but you were close enough that they were sure she’d be fine if you were induced or had a c-section now, but no one was sure how they could do that.  If you were sedated or unconscious your powers worked fine, but as soon as you started to become fully aware of what was going on, they started going haywire again. 

You weren’t sure how long you’d been in the medbay when Tony came in to talk to Natasha.  Normally she’d leave the room so as not to worry you but she must have thought you were deeper asleep than you were because as soon as the door opened she started to talk.

“Any news?”  She asked.

“They got him,” Tony said.  Natasha moved beside you and knocked over something over which startled you just enough to make you realize what Tony had said.

“They did?  Is he… are they?”  Natasha babbled.

“Easy now, Red,” Tony said.  “No need to smash up the place.  They’re headed back now.  Should be here in six hours.  The little hawk’s words were; ‘he’s beaten up, but not more than usual’.  He was naked too, but what else is new?”

“Oh my god, Tony,” Natasha sighed.  “I was so prepared for the worst.”

“With Clint?  He’s like a cockroach,” Tony said.

The machines started beeping as you tried to struggle awake, wanting to engage with them about Clint coming home.  You forced your eyes open and struggled to sit up as all around you machines started to alarm.

“Dorogáya,” Natasha soothed.  “Relax.  You need to stay calm.”

“Clint…”

The word came out at barely a whisper and hurt your throat when you forced it.

“He’s okay.  He’s coming back and everything’s going to be fine,” Natasha said, as nurses and medical staff entered the room and started to poke around you.  “Just relax, my darling.”

“But...”

A sharp pain ran around your side to your back and you groaned and doubled over.  “What is it?”  Natasha asked, sounding alarmed.  “What’s going on?”

The doctors started feeling your sides and with some gentle words and manipulation, they coaxed you into a position to check on the babies.  “The baby looks fine,” Jake said and pricked your finger.  “And her powers are working.”  He flashed a small light into your eyes.  “Do you have pain?”

You squinted at the light and winced.  “In my side,” you rasped.

“Let me just check if you’re showing any other signs of labor,” he said, moving down to the foot of the bed. “It’s probably just from trying to move too fast after being still for so long.”

You pulled your knees up and spread your legs as he moved between them and started to give you a pelvic exam.  There was a soft pop and a gush of liquid and Jake jumped back in shock.  “Well, I guess that answers that question. You’re in labor.”

“But it’s too early,” Natasha argued.  “She’s not due for four weeks.”

“It’s a bit of a relief actually,” Jake said.  “We’ve been trying to figure out how to induce since she fainted.  Keeping her sedated for this long was hardly ideal.  We’re going to let the sedation wear off and hopefully, she’ll be born naturally.”

“Clint…” you said.  “He should be here.”

“My love,” Natasha soothed.  “Just worry about you right now.”

“Hey,” Tony said, rubbing Natasha’s shoulder.  “I'll go and radio the jet.  Let the bird know his little egg’s about to hatch.  Get Cap to gun it.”

“We should have time,” Jake said.  “First baby and all.  They don’t just shoot out.”

“So, what do we do?”  Natasha asked.

“We’re going to monitor her, and let the sedatives wear off.  I’ll call Kelly to let her know things have started.  Then we’re just going to have to see what happens,” Jake said.  “Keep everything crossed we just have a normal labor.  But I’ll be around and even though pregnancy and labor aren’t my expertise, I do know about enhanced more than anyone else, so I’ll do what I can.”

Natasha furrowed her brow.  You couldn’t help but feel bad about how much stress she had been dealing with for the past few weeks.  Here you were freaking out about Clint and she had you, Clint, and the baby to worry about.  It was a testament to her that she was able to keep it together as well as she had.

You took her hand and held it to your cheek.  “I’m sorry, Nat,” you whispered.

“What for?”  She asked.

“This.  Clint.  Everything,” you said.  “It’s too much.”

She caressed your cheek and pressed a kiss to your forehead.  “It’s going to be worth it.  Everyone will be here soon.”

It was a few hours before the sedation began wearing off enough that you were able to get up and out of bed.  However, as it wore off your powers seemed to start acting up again.  They would go from working so well they would out any needles that came anywhere near you, to not working at all so that your blood pressure would shoot up and you’d have to lie down while they monitored both you and the baby.

Even with all that, things seemed to progress normally and the longer the labor went, the more you were sure Clint wasn’t going to make it in time.

Natasha didn’t leave your side.   If you were in bed on the monitors, she was holding your hand and patting your brow with a cool compress.  If you were up and pacing through the pain, she was walking with you.  When you wanted to go into the shower and just sit under the water, she was in there with you, stripped down to her underwear and supporting your weight.

You recognized the look of fear on her face every time they hooked you up to the monitors and the look of relief when the heartbeat monitors all showed normal.  Otherwise, she just seemed as calm and together as she always was.  Even in the midst of active labor, you couldn’t help worrying about Clint.

“Looks like it’s time,” your obstetrician Kelly said.  “She’s coming.”

“No, no, no, no,” you said, shaking your head.  “Clint’s not here yet.”

“The baby doesn’t care, honey,” Kelly reasoned.  “You’re going to have to push.”

You screwed up your face and shook your head, trying to resist the urge to push that your own body was sending out.  Just when you thought you couldn’t take it anymore, the door burst open and Kate practically fell through it, supporting Clint.   “I’ve got him, he’s here,” she shouted.

“Did I miss it?”  Clint asked, his voice panicked.

“Oh my god!”  Natasha gasped, holding out her free arm.  Clint staggered forward and basically fell into her arms.  “I thought I lost you.”

“I’m sorry, Nat,” he said.  “I was…”

She shook her head and held him close.  “You can tell us later.”

You moaned as a contraction hit and you felt the urge to push that you couldn’t ignore.  “That’s it, push,” Kelly cheered.

Clint let Natasha go and leaned over you, looking down into your eyes.  “Hey babe,” he whispered.  “I’m sorry I wasn’t here.”

You wanted to respond, but all you were was the pain of delivering a baby.  You groaned and pushed again, straining as hard as you could.

“Well, no offense, but I’m taking that as my cue.  I’ll be out there,” Kate announced and left the room.

“That’s it, dorogáya,” Natasha soothed as Clint pressed a kiss to your forehead.

“She’s crowning if either of you wants to see,” Kelly said.

Both Clint and Natasha moved down to look between your legs.  Clint’s face scrunched up while Natasha's jaw dropped open.  “Wow, look at her.”

“We’re getting really close now,” Kelly said.  “When you’re ready, push again.”

It was another half an hour or so before the final push that brought your little girl into the word.  She started crying immediately, and the sound was a relief.  She was okay.  Despite Nathasha’s genes and your powers going haywire, she had a good set of lungs and she was pink, and healthy, and here.

You lay back down and felt the familiar buzz of your powers engaging healing everything that had happened to you as they cut the cord and whisked her away to be weighed and have her APGAR done.

“You did it,” Natasha said, caressing your brow.

You hummed and looked over at Clint.  He was a mess of cut and bruises but he looked happy as he watched the medical staff fussing over the baby.  “You made it.”

“I told you I’d be here,” he said and leaned down and kissed you.  There was a spark as his lips touched on yours and you both hummed and enjoyed that buzz as it spread from you to him as his wounds began to heal.

They brought the little girl over and placed her on your chest.  She was just how you’d imagined her.  Clint’s bright blue eyes and a tuft of red hair like Natasha.  She looked around at you, Natasha, and Clint like she was taking you all in.  “She’s perfect,” you said.

Natasha made a choked sound and nodded, and tears began to run down her cheeks.  With all the things you’d seen Natasha go through, the admitting she couldn’t have kids, the gratefulness when you’d offered to be surrogate, her fear it would go wrong, starting a relationship with you, Clint going missing, your weird health turn, this was the first time you’d ever seen her cry.  It made you so happy to see how moved she was right now and you reached over and took her hand.  “Maybe you should hold her.”

Natasha nodded again and carefully lifted her off you, cradling her close, and looked down at the newborn.  “Hey, sweet girl.  I’m your mama,” she whispered.

“We did it, Nat,” Clint said.  “You get to have everything.”

Gabe is, predictably, looking for what's left of his family. Following rumors of safe havens and bunkers and such. Starts the story as someone who tries to be diplomatic, if not outright pacifist, but as times get tougher and resources dwindle, he'd become one of the most cutthroat motherfuckers in the wasteland. Low-key though, low-key. People won't trust you if they know you’re capable of throwing them to a horde for strategic reasons. Like if Rick turned into Shane (for those of us familiar with early Walking Dead--idk did that happen eventually? i gave up before we even met Negan lol). The end justifies the means :) Damn, I can legit see Gabe going full evil in a zombie au omg 😂😂 i want to write it so fucking bad

Kile has arrived--clearly, this is the timeline they belong in. They start their journey with Gabe (and their doggo) and stick to him like glue, even reluctantly so when Gabe eventually has them join the settlement. This can only go one way, though: Kile's just too much of a wildcard for the group and hates being told what to do. (Especially now that society has fallen, wtf) They'd make their exit alone and unannounced aside from a brief head’s up to Gabe. It's slightly bittersweet, but also? They get to loot and hunt and sneak around and kill fucking zombies, all by themself. Kile is a loner, a hiker, and a hunter to begin with so they do beyond fine on their own. However, once the inevitable violent human threat comes for the settlement, Gabe is sent out to convince Kile to come out of isolation, just this once please, to be the camp’s super soldier help defend the camp.

Jack... this poor boy, he doesn't deserve a zombie au 😂 He's one of those people that first believes zombies are just sick people, too squeamish to keep up with TV news coverage at the onset and too upset to consider anything else. He'd hunker down at home, staying holed up even while his neighbors evacuated, and probably be discovered while the main group is looting the same place as him. When people try to tell him the real state of the world, he'd be in denial until he absolutely couldn't be anymore. idk, probably after Kile shooting a bunch of non-lethal holes thru a zombie to make a point (attracting more in the process lol).

He’d almost immediately join the medical team at the settlement and as word spreads about how easy he is to talk to, he quickly becomes the literal on-site therapist. It's a role he embraces but... idk if it's an emotional burden he can bear. He's very emotionally resilient! But he ain't a professional lol imagine a whole settlement of traumatized zombie survivors seeking you out for counseling, yikes. He also can't say no to a person in need, so instead he quietly spirals into a very private depression while continuing to help others!!

Jessie also had the initial reaction of hoping zombies could be saved, but she woke up from that dream swiftly. The science-minded person that she is, esp with her interest in biology, leaves her determined to find anybody who's got the intellect, expertise, and resources to start doing actual work toward a treatment, cure, vaccine—anything. Nothing would get her to finally unabashedly embrace her love of science (and innate leadership skills!!) faster than a zombie apocalypse! In fact, it’s thanks to her that the Emerson settlement’s got a small but growing team of scientists doing as much research as humanly possible to best educate the others on the outbreak and zombie behavior. Def no zombie experimentation going on though lol. ...Not yet, at least.

Rain remains cargo as I said in the last post about this 😆 They'd be very good for keeping clothes repaired and making useful modifications in the settlement, but their life up to this point has been very sheltered and privileged. We're talking somebody with a chauffeur and a personal chef before the outbreak! They would contribute to quality of life and homemaking efforts more than anything—an overlooked aspect of these scenarios tbh! After as many months of dragging their feet as possible and being nigh impossible to track down when you need them, they eventually become involved in meal planning and even help out with medical stuff if they're asked.

Survival rating: C. Being so tiny helps them find good hiding spots and their self-preservation is high enough to keep them from unnecessary risk-taking. Plus they're very stealthy! Self-defense is a major issue though, so hiding is always their best option.

Rupan/Rohan scouts for and leads scavenging missions and is Curt's right hand on the recruitment team. The two of them together are the perfect combo of diplomacy, debate, and deception--although R is more honorable about the last one and will only deceive for strategic reasons. When they aren’t looting and recruiting, they’re doing peacekeeping inside the settlement. Most social disputes end up getting brought to them for mediation and they’re pretty dang good at making and enforcing calls. One day they’ll wake up to realize they’ve basically become a sheriff and feel the need to puke their guts up and do something, anything, to reassure themself they’re still punk 😂

Faith in humanity: Believes in fundamental goodness but knows better than to trust first impressions

Survival rating: B-. Can handle themself both with humans and zeds but is vulnerable to hostage situations and truly difficult sentimental/interpersonal decisions!

Vivian/Vincent manages inventory and stock and they run it so efficiently it’s scary! They're the perfect pick: a hawk-eyed tyrant and tattletale 😂 Despite constantly butting heads with just about everyone on every imaginable thing, they quickly become an important part of the inner circle of decision-makers for the settlement at large. Terrible at stealth, jumpy, and squeamish at the sight of blood and gore, they literally never go on missions unless they're 100% needed for their expertise on a supply run. (They would deny all of these shortcomings are that big a problem, meanwhile R is definitely acting as their bodyguard lol.) When they do tag along, they're prone to becoming the damsel in distress. Seriously, it happens near every fucking time. It's like they just attract only the most improbable and perilous zombie attacks and hostage situations 😆

Heidi is running the settlement, well-organized to the degree of actually managing to bring bureaucracy to a post-zombie apocalypse settlement 😂 People are free to come and go, but getting in if you don't live there requires trading something of value (fuel, med supplies, food, etc), temporary surrender and registry of firearms and explosives, and you gotta GTFO at the time and date specified upon entry! You can stay long-term if you contribute to the community in a tangible way—and each person admitted is approved by Heidi personally. Yes, every individual. No, she has no free time. And she is not known to be lenient with rule breakers—you want rule bending, you’ll have to go to Curt for that. People kind of hate her, but it can't be denied that she runs a tight ship. She kind of throws herself into the work to avoid the harsher reality at large and hasn't left the settlement in a long time. She's out of touch with how bad things have gotten in the wastes, but she knows better than to take reports at anything less than face value--even when she's skeptical.

Curt leads the recruitment and reconnaissance teams! When a new person or group shows up in the area, Curt's the one who stalks watches them, decides if they're worth approaching, and if they should be approached with an invitation, a simple acknowledgment/announcement of their presence, or an outright armed warning to leave the area. He also keeps tabs on morale and general confidence inside the settlement, alongside R. When he isn’t leading those efforts, though, he’s flirting with settlers and squirreling his way out of manual labor and other chores. He’s also secretly growing weed at his place--don’t tell Heidi or Vi ‘cause they’ll wanna yell at him and ration it UGH.

Cognitive Impairment in Schizophrenia

Disclaimer: I am not a mental health professional, I can’t diagnose you. If you think you have a mental illness please reach out to your doctor or a mental health professional.

For schizophrenics like myself, some of the most stigmatized, and sensationalized symptoms are the positive ones, meaning delusions, hallucinations, and movement disorders to some extent. You see them in textbooks and in the media; seeing, hearing, smelling or feeling things that aren’t real. Believing strange ideas, and this is my own example, like that the alien government lizard people are coming after you. These draw the most attention from the public eye, and I can’t blame them, alien government lizard people is pretty out there. But what about the less talked about symptoms such as negative and cognitive symptoms? Well, this essay will examine the cognitive side of a schizophrenia diagnosis.

According to Columbia University (2016), “many people with [Schizophrenia] also have cognitive deficits, including problems with short- and long-term memory.” They go on to say that cognitive factors can be the most disabling for people, leading to difficulty holding down a job and maintaining social relationships. They don’t have many answers as to the cause or cure for memory problems. Sucks to be us I guess. I personally have a plethora of issues with memory, short term and long term. I find myself lost when the dialogue of TV shows gets even slightly complicated because I immediately forget what was said, maybe that’s just me but it takes a toll on my self-esteem when I can't follow slightly complicated dialogue. But anyway, back to memory. Apparently when a group of healthy controls were compared to a group with schizophrenia, the healthy group, unsurprisingly, did better at memory tasks. In fact the health control groups brains showed increased brain activity the tests got harder and decreased activity when it got easier while the people with schizophrenia showed significantly weaker activity across the board.

According to Bowie and Harvey (2006) cognitive symptoms are the central feature of schizophrenia. As well as that these impairments may even present before the emergence of positive symptoms. They also found that there were “moderate deficits in attention, verbal fluency, working memory, and processing speed, with superimposed severe deficits in declarative verbal memory and executive functioning.” What is executive functioning? Well to quote Goodman (2021), “[e]xecutive functioning skills help you get things done. These skills are controlled by an area of the brain called the frontal lobe.” Things executive functioning helps you do is “manage time, pay attention, switch focus, plan and organize, remember details, avoid saying or doing the wrong thing, do things based on your experience, and multitask” (Goodman, 2021).

I’ll cover some ways to deal with executive dysfunction in a later essay.

Most people with schizophrenia will show some kind of cognitive impairment, but the severity will vary across different people. One interesting thing about these cognitive impairments is that they will remain relatively stable over time. There are some different types of impairments that I will summarize.

General Intelligence

I take some offence at the description that all people with schizophrenia have lower IQ’s, I mean there are/were some very smart people with it, like John Nash, or the people Cernis, Vassos, Brebion, McKenna, Murray, David & MacCabe (2015) studied, finding that there is “a high-IQ variant of schizophrenia that is associated with markedly fewer negative symptoms than typical schizophrenia” However the science seems to be overwhelmingly favourable in the direction that people with it have lower IQ’s as a group. On the other hand, I don’t know what kind of people they picked for their healthy control group, because if they were all university grads then it’s not really fair. So take this with a grain of salt. While the tests say that we are as a group, less intelligent than the “general” population it doesn’t mean you specifically are not intelligent. We can be just as successful as anyone else.

Attention

This one is simple, people with schizophrenia have a deficit in their ability to maintain their attention, this occurs even before the first psychotic episode.

Working memory

I have a terrible working memory, bad enough for it to be considered a learning disability. However I’m not alone in this, many people with schizophrenia have some kind of dysfunction in working memory, and apparently specifically verbal working memory. Bowie and Harvey (2006) state that “Working memory can be conceptualized as the ability to maintain and manipulate informative stimuli.” This is in contrast to attention span, with working memory being more cognitively challenging and attention span being more simple. My theory is that this probably would just lead to most traditional Sith denouncing the practice of non-traditional methods of having kids altogether, which would. actually explain why all Sith don't just do that to avoid the rigors of pregnancy and the vulnerability that exposes you to combat-wise, along with probably a high failure rate in the medical incubator version (especially back during the Old Republic era as compared to the modern era). But still, it has to happen sometimes. How do you handle that.

This will just be a short theory as it seems that I really dont have the capacity to put my thoughts into words unless im required to but I'll try hard bec due to my chosen college program, I cannot ignore this at all ever since i thought of it so basically this theory is a bit medical. In both the manga and the anime adaption, it is pretty obvious that her legs are much larger than normal-- in terms of character design and whatnot lmao. It is also one of the reasons that led to her meeting with Hanako-san of the toilet bec a boy she confessed to told her that she had fat ankles/legs which also contributed to her desperate call to the school mystery. Nene is destined to have a short lifespan, which seems to be less than a year in according to Hanako in the Clock Keeper arc after Mirai *advanced* her time thus, leading to the reveal of her fate.

This is where it gets medical. Let me remind you that having fat ankles is NOT fictional at all. It also happens in real life and maybe you have also heard the word "cankles", which is swollen ankles. In medical terms, it is referred to as oedema/edema. This term simply means "swelling". In Yashiro's case, it may be called "lymphedema" as it is just her legs. Yashiro's body is very petite as contrast to her ankles.

This edema is caused when there is a fluid retention or build-up in that part of the body that is swelling. At most times, this is usually seen in pregnant women which is very common bec there's things that change inside the woman's body to aid in the development of the baby, but let's not talk about that bec Yashiro Nene does not fit in that picture, no?

Edema does not only happen to pregnant women. There may also be an underlying cause of other conditions such as liver diseases, heart diseases and basically organ failure. Although I really don't have any evidence of her showcasing any symptoms of any sickness of any kind as the series is mainly focused on supernatural adventures, let my nursing student self just talk about it. As part of her character design, Yashiro is seen wearing very long dark socks or stockings most times. I've read somewhere before that this may be because of her insecurities in her legs but there might be a possibility that there is another reason.

Just basing it off of my basic knowledge of Birmingham in the 1920's and the whole operation they had going on there i would assume that this would be considered not only weird, but inherently abnormal in terms of physical health

- Now we know that that's not the case and that its natural for some to not  identify with a generalized sexuality, but due to social and medical beliefs at the time, telling you big bear of a mans would probably raise some red flags for him

- He's never really been the type to listen to what people say unless it's important, or listen to what people say if they're criticizing his partner, but in this case he might view it as a medical issue

- The first time you tell him he's a little confused. It’s up to you whether or not you're actually going to be direct about it, but he'll initially assume it's because you're not attracted to him in particular

- Maybe you've gotten tired of him? Maybe this is just another way of saying you wanna back out? Or maybe-

- generally after an explanation, he'll get it a little more but still have questions

- "Is it like,, some sort-of malfunction. Y'know, in yeh head???" ( forgive me i cant write accents ) Alfie doesn't exactly get it at first because that cant be normal, right??? Needless to say this sort of challenges his whole thought process in terms of human biology even though his knowledge is a bit limited due to A) the time period and B) because he hasn't really had an education like that (he's intelligent, don't get me wrong, but the public education consisted of the "Three R's" which were reading, writing and arithmetic and some semblance of physical education and that was for boys. So you can assume the amount of education he had, excluding the fact that he's jewish and grew up in a complicated situation (see bottom for cited source))

- Regardless, even if he did have medical knowledge that was advanced for the time he still wouldn't know much about this so he has A LOT of questions

- Initially he's going to ask if you don't "y'know, get it up" or something like that. Explaining how it works and the limits and idea to your sexuality generally takes some time for him to understand and process fully since it isn't really considered natural in this time period. It kind of takes a while to accept it as well since he (believe it or not) thinks it's partially his fault

- In some way he's going to think it's because he failed somehow. He knows subconsciously he couldn't have done anything to "fix" it even though theres nothing wrong with you but he's half convinced its because he's not attractive. Keep in mind, he's had pretty much no experience with this, so bear with him. He straight up doesn't know what the fuck to do.

- Some reassurance goes a long way in these sorts of situations, however. You're probably going to have to let him know that it’s really, honestly nothing he did and that you're always been like this. You don't love him anybody less than you would if you WERE sexually engaged, and in turn he loves you just the same as well

- It takes some getting used to, but honestly he's overjoyed that you two didn't break it off just because of that. It turns out not really affecting your life together that much since he can just "take care of it" by himself and get it over with, but his attitude towards you doesn't change much...or at least it doesn't change much after a while of being together (dude finds himself getting them “urges” but he DOESN’T want to make you feel pressured to take care of his problems so he doesnt say shit about it)

- Initially he's sort of afraid that certain touches will make you uncomfortable. Like sitting in his lap? He views that as inherently sexual and so if you DO do that he's automatically going to think 'but i thought you said???' And just furrow his brows for a little bit. BUT after eventually seeing that it DOESN'T have to be sexual he sorta finds himself enjoying it

- Like YES please sit in his lap and read to him, he's so soft for all that sweet shit that it's sickening. It takes a while to get used to, but he eventually figures out that it's really not worth breaking up over. you're still you and you're still his Ride Or Die Partner In CrimeTM so it's fine with him. You still mean the world to him anyway, and he will constantly remind you of it regardless of what others may think

- But even if you believe his approval is all you want, god forbid anyone say something negative about you

- This man defends his pride and joy like it isn't anyone else's business (cause its not really), and someone WILL get their brains blown out of the other side of their head if they say a damn thing that sounds less than friendly. "Is it broke?" Or "Must have a screw loose in the head." Or anything along those lines will not fly. Unless you deliberately tell him not too he will definitely- ehem -“get rid of the problem”. But he might do it anyway even if you tell him not to because he's just like that - -;

- Overall, he's a bit confused and conflicted at first, but eventually learns to accept it how it is. He's definitely going to have some questions, and will probably always be getting used to it due to how rare it is, but he still loves you regardless of this. Boyfriend rating : 9/10 needs some improvement the first few weeks but overall one of the best after the improvement period
