Yes, we are still #canning in mid #october ! Last night, I got some more #pears done, and some #pickledcrabapples finished! I will still be canning & preserving for weeks to come, this season. #selfsufficiency is a #lifestyle , #notahobby . It's #notforrecreation ...it's for #survival . It is something I take very seriously, and have worked at for decades of my life, so that I can extend the lives of my #family members, keeping them #healthy , keeping us #connected with the Earth, saving us money, AND ensuring we have a #backup #foodsupply . I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, or to sweat, or to be different, when it comes to the #wellbeing & health of my family. Take it how you want to, judge me all you want, criticize how you like... idgaff ... We are going to be ok. We are going to make it. We are going to continue to pass this down to the next generation, because it is essential to the survival of our children, and children's children. New Garden Plot

Hello everyone, I am new to the blog and this is my first post.

I am working on making a new garden plot. This one is about 50′ by 25′. I used a Brinly cultivator to break the soil, its mostly clay. The soil is not too hard since it  rained a few days ago. The black bag on top of the cultivator (2nd picture) is a 50 pound weight so it can dig deeper. 

After a few passes with the cultivator, I used a Brinly plow to make furrows. Now, there are different methods  I am using for planting (raised beds, no till, straw mulch, seasonal rain, drip irrigation, etc). The reason I made furrows it’s because this garden is on a slope. I am not sure you can tell but opposite to the tractor I made a swale a few months ago in order to stop erosion. I also planted orange trees on the edge of the swale as well.

It will be raining this week so I hope to get out and plant as soon as it stops raining. The plan is to plant corn, beans and squash, maybe some onions on the edges to “try” to deter gophers (which is another post in its entirety). I will follow up in a couple of weeks and show you any progress I’ve made. If you have any comments, advice, constructive criticism, they are all welcome. Thanks!

Time and time again we are asked by industry professionals to submit hours of work on the hope that our work will be chosen. This time a popular Australian magazine has done a call out for illustrators to pitch ideas on a certain subject for their new issue. It was great to see some illustrators disrepute the magazine on this. The magazine argued that they weren’t asking for work just ‘pitch ideas’, again they were called out by illustrators who argued that ‘pitch ideas’ is work and you get paid to do them and they were asking people to use their talent, education and experience for free, that crowd sourcing erodes the professionals’ ability to ask for, and receive, rates that allow them to eat, pay their bills and continue to create. We are exhausted by these inexcusable, unprofessionals who continue to exhort artists passion and dedication, thank you to the brave illustrators who argued on every ones behalf.
