Salt Valley Viewpoint/Delicate Arch Overlook, Arches National Park (No. 2)

Delicate Arch is a 52-foot-tall (16 m) freestanding natural arch located in Arches National Park, near Moab in Grand County, Utah, United States. The arch is the most widely recognized landmark in Arches National Park and is depicted on Utah license plates and a postage stamp commemorating Utah's centennial anniversary of admission to the Union in 1996. The Olympic torch relay for the 2002 Winter Olympics passed through the arch.

Because of its distinctive shape, the arch was known as "the Chaps" and "the Schoolmarm's Bloomers" by local cowboys. Many other names have been applied to this arch including "Bloomers Arch", "Marys Bloomers", "Old Maids Bloomers", "Pants Crotch", "Salt Wash Arch", and "School Marms Pants". The arch was given its current name by Frank Beckwith, leader of the Arches National Monument Scientific Expedition, who explored the area in the winter of 1933–1934. Although there is a rumor that the names of Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch were inadvertently exchanged due to a signage mixup by the National Park Service (NPS), this is false.

Freedom trail

By morning, colonial militia had assembled in Lexington and Concord for what became the first military encounters of the Revolution. It was patriot Revere who planned the hanging of warning lanterns in the steeple of the Old North Church on April 18 before his famous ride. Among the families of the North End, downtown Boston's oldest surviving residential neighborhood, were artisan Paul Revere, his second wife Rachel, and seven of his children. They include Old South Meeting House, Old Corner Bookstore, Old State House, Boston Massacre Site, and Faneuil Hall.Ĭhapter 3-Neighborhood of Revolution In the course of two pivotal days-April 18 and 19, 1775-years of growing unrest burst into insurrection. The sites here feature places where liberty-loving men and women began to take collective action, culminating in events like the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. Between 17, however, differing views of the rights of the colonies under British rule led to actions, reactions, and tumultuous encounters between Britian and the Boston colonists that snowballed toward war. "The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people." Sites in this chapter include Boston Common, Massachusetts State House, Park Street Church and Granary Burying Ground, King's Chapel and Burying Ground, and the site of the first public school.Ĭhapter 2-The People Revolt In 1760 breaking away from Great Britain was unimaginable to most Bostonians. "The Revolution was effected before the war commenced," observed John Adams. The sites here include places where townsfolk assembled to proclaim their rights, drill their militias, bury their dead, educate their young, govern their own church congregations, and protect their lands from British meddling. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile walking trail of 16 colonial, Revolutionary, and federal sites in downtown Boston and Charlestown that tells the story in four principle chapters of the people, places, and events that sparked the American Revolution against England and highlights Boston's role in laying the foundation for a new nation.Ĭhapter 1-Revolution of Minds and Hearts For more than a century before the first musket was fired in America's War for Independence, Puritan-bred Bostonians embraced a strong heritage of community and a culture of freedom that was remarkable among colonial settlements. The park is distinctive, mixing historic buildings and landscapes owned by the city, the state, the federal government, and private organizations. Today the park is an association of sites ranging from steepled churches, grand meeting halls, and battlegrounds to America's oldest commissioned warship. A century later, in 1974, Congress ensured the continuity of this effort-and the preservation of important parts of America's heritage-by creating Boston National Historic Park. Intimacy with nature. When a wild animal let’s you into its inner circle, it is an incredible thing. It doesn’t happen often, and I for one am glad that animals keep a naturally safe distance away from humans (their biggest threats). But every once in a while, an animal is curious enough to come close, recognizes that you are not a threat, and feels safe enough to let down their guard. When it lets it does this, and feels comfortable enough to FALL ASLEEP not 5 feet from you, then you know you’ve earned their trust. It’s in these moments that you stay silent, relish in the intimacy, and be sure you continue to earn the trust that has been bestowed upon you. MDNHA Receives National Park Service Centennial Award for Oral History Program

CLEVELAND, MS. (October 11) - The Delta Center for Culture and Learning at Delta State University and the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area recently received 2016 National Park Service Centennial Awards for creating the Delta Jewels Oral History Partnership.

The cultural heritage interpretation project honors the lives of unsung Mississippi Delta church mothers featured in Delta Jewels: In Search of My Grandmother’s Wisdom, a book by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalism professor Alysia Burton Steele. The MDNHA was the only National Heritage Area to receive a NPS Centennial Award this year.

“We are honored to receive this esteemed recognition from the National Park Service for this important cultural heritage development project,” said Dr. Rolando Herts, director of The Delta Center and executive director of the MDNHA. “The fact that Delta State and the MDNHA are acknowledged together truly demonstrates the power of partnerships and collaboration when telling the Delta’s story.”

For 18 months in 2015 and 2016, the Delta Jewels Oral History Partnership’s community gatherings engaged over 1,000 Mississippi Delta residents, visitors and supporters. The gatherings took place in diverse, welcoming venues throughout the state including universities, churches and tourism and cultural centers.

“We are thrilled with the results of the Delta Jewels partnership,” said Dr. Myrtis Tabb, chair of the MDNHA. “This program was one of our very first and was extremely successful right off the bat. We are eager to build upon that success with continued partnerships that will help share the diverse stories of the Mississippi Delta.”

The Delta Center continued to host presentations with Steele in 2017, which have focused on community impacts documented in the Delta Jewels Oral History Partnership 2015-2016 Report.

Most recently, these have taken place at the National Heritage Areas Southeast Region workshop in Atlanta, Georgia; the Smithsonian African American Interpretation Workshop in Charleston, South Carolina; the NPS Collaboration Clinic in Biloxi, Mississippi; and the Association for African American Museums conference in Washington, D.C. In addition, Herts and Steele have been invited to present at the upcoming Oral History Association conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“We have used the report as an interpretive and educational resource, which enhances the storytelling experience,” said Steele. “In addition to photos from the community events, the report includes survey results from participants. An overall program rating of 4.9 out of 5 clearly indicates that sharing the Delta Jewels’ oral histories have had positive impacts in the communities we engaged.”

The MDNHA and The Delta Center commemorated the 2016 NPS Centennial through other projects and events. Together, they organized an opening reception with Delta State University’s 2015 Winning the Race conference featuring former NPS director Bob Stanton.

In addition, the MDNHA Passport to Your National Parks program attracted NPS Centennial travelers, and a MDNHA promotional video was screened at a NPS Centennial film festival in Atlanta. Since its release, the video has been viewed over 20,000 times on social media.

Glacier’s Citizen Science Program Celebrates the Year of the Bird

What do you call a bird in the winter? “Brrr-d!” Winter is approaching Glacier National Park and things are starting to wind down here at the Crown of the Continent Research Learning Center (CCRLC), but 2018 marked a time full of new adventures, interesting public events and joyous celebrations. Among these celebrations was the “Year of the Bird,” a year-long event which commemorates the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA)—the most powerful piece of legislation ever passed to protect North American bird species. Over 150 organizations nationwide joined together to bring attention to the issues that threaten birds and celebrate the numerous conservation efforts to protect and defend them.

Today in #history: #OnThisDay, February 21, 1885, the Washington Monument is dedicated in Washington, D.C. The 555-foot-high marble obelisk was first proposed in 1783. However, the cornerstone was not laid until July 4, 1848. Work on the project was interrupted by political quarreling in the 1850s, and construction ceased entirely during the Civil War. Finally, in 1876, Congress, inspired by the American centennial, passed legislation appropriating $200,000 for completion of the monument. It was dedicated in 1885 and wouldn't open to visitors until three years later. By District of Columbia law, no building can be built taller than it in the nation’s capital. Naturalization at Charles Pinckney National Historic Site

The 20th annual naturalization ceremony at Charles Pinckney National Historic Site took place on October 20, 2017. One of the largest naturalization ceremonies in the region, the event was held on the grounds of Snee Farm, the 28-acre remnant site of Pinckney’s original 715-acre 18th century coastal plantation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.  

Since 2006, the National Park Service has partnered with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to host naturalization ceremonies in parks throughout the country. The partnership was renewed in 2010, and over 100 ceremonies were held in the year of the NPS Centennial (2016).

Naturalization ceremonies held at NPS sites celebrate new citizens in the natural and cultural heritage sites that embody the broad and varied history of the United States.

Snee Farm

Charles Pinckney was an important figure in South Carolina and the nation during the early years of the American Republic, serving as South Carolina governor for four terms and acting as Thomas Jefferson’s Minister to Spain from 1801-1805. Pinckney’s role in politics and public affairs includes drafting more than 25 clauses in the final draft of the U.S. Constitution.

Pinckney inherited Snee Farm after the death of this father in 1782. While Pinckney’s political career was rooted in Charleston, he maintained the agricultural property as a country retreat and source of income. An enslaved workforce cultivated rice and indigo on the plantation.

Charles Pinckney National Historic Site Cultural Landscape Report 

Snee Farm includes several historic landscape features. A circa 1828 farmhouse remains, while the original main house and supporting structures were removed by later owners. Historic roads follow their original alignments. An 18th century levee used in the irrigation of rice fields still stands, and it is one of several that would have existed historically. A marble cenotaph is a 20th century reproduction of an original design by Charles Pinckney, created to honor his father’s passing.

Today, the historic site preserves the landscape and former home of Charles Pinckney, and it interprets his life and the lives of Snee Farm’s free and enslaved inhabitants. Naturalization ceremonies have been held on the grounds of Snee Farm since 1997.
