New theory on dense gases and liquids could aid carbon capture

The transport of dense gases and liquids is becoming increasingly relevant in relation to carbon capture. Research published in The Journal of Chemical Physics is helping us understand more about how this can be done most efficiently. Gas must be compressed before it can be transported over long distances. This can be done either by increasing the pressure of the gas or by converting it into a liquid. In order for this to occur safely and efficiently, we need to understand as much as possible about how the gas behaves before and during transportation. Dense gases are affected by changes in pressure and temperature, and there has not been a fundamental theory for different dense gases and liquids until now. "I am developing a theory to describe the transport properties of dense gases and liquids," said Ph.D. research fellow Vegard Gjeldvik Jervell from the thermodynamics group at NTNU and the Porelab Centre of Excellence.

More than 16,000 chemicals can be found in plastic, and many are harmful: Report

Researchers have found more than 16,000 chemicals in plastics. A new report shows that about a quarter of these chemicals can be hazardous to health and the environment. Plastic pollution is an international environmental crisis, and the researchers behind a new report are becoming increasingly concerned about the health consequences of plastic. "We know that there are many problematic chemicals in plastics. They pose a threat to both human health and the environment. Therefore, we must make plastic safe and sustainable," says Martin Wagner, a professor at NTNU's Department of Biology.

Free Norwegian Language Resources

I see many learners looking for Duolingo alternatives and realized I haven’t shared any new resources in a bit! So here are my personal favorite Norwegian learning resources that are completely free!

NTNU’s NoW (Norwegian on the Web) — Online independent learning course developed by a Norwegian university that progresses from beginner to intermediate level. Includes reading, audio, practice exercises, and grammar! [A1-B1 level]

Norskappen (App store link) — Fantastic vocab practice with real human spoken audio! There is also preposition practice, article gender practice, and verb practice. The app’s creator actively listens to and incorporates user feedback (link to Reddit post by creator asking for feedback). [A1-B1 level]

Norsklærer Karense on Youtube — Grammar and vocabulary videos produced by a Norwegian language teacher. Lots of in-depth explanations of grammar with examples, differences between similar words, and advice and information about taking the Norskprøven (Norway’s official language test). [A1-B2+ level]

If you are aiming to take the Norskprøven at B2 level, your best resources are often going to be the ones not designated as a “course” — reading articles on NRK or Store norske leksikon, watching Norwegian news/debate shows and podcasts (since B2 level involves being able to reason and defend an opinion) like Debatten or Dagsnytt 18, and lastly, producing your own language in written or spoken format. For that last one it helps to find a tutor who can practice with you and correct your writing, but besides that you can really come a long way for free!

Her er noen segenskaper av dialekta som snakkes i Dovre kommune. Dovre ligger i Nord-Gudbrandsdalen, Oppland fylke, midt i hjertet av Norge. Jeg har vært veldig interessert i denne dialekta fordi familien på min fars side har røtter der. Plastic is a very complex material that can contain many different chemicals, some of which can be harmful. This is also true for plastic food packaging. "We found as many as 9,936 different chemicals in a single plastic product used as food packaging," said Martin Wagner, a professor at NTNU's Department of Biology. Wagner has been working with chemicals in plastic products for several years. He is part of a research group at NTNU that has now published its findings in two articles in Environmental Science & Technology. Ph.D. candidates Molly McPartland and Sarah Stevens from NTNU are the lead authors of both studies. In one study, the researchers looked at 36 different plastic products that are used to package food. These products came from five countries; the United States, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Germany and Norway. "In most of these plastic products, we found chemicals that can affect the secretion of hormones and metabolism," Wagner said.
