I know I haven't been here in ages (although I'd sort of like to change that, and maybe even make this a broader studyblr), but I'm feeling really proud of one of my short essay responses on my most recent Norwegian exam? So I thought I would share it here
The grammar is absolutely a little wonky (and I am totally open to corrections), but I mostly just think it's really cool that now that I'm an intermediate student, in my second year of studying the language, I actually have the vocabulary to talk about topics that are really important to me in another language, even if I can't do it perfectly.
This was the prompt:
And this was my response:

Why are the Norwegian dub and sub so different from each other for Frozen 2? It’s not all about space.

let me tell you, i am obsessed with how wonderful the norwegian for 'my wife' sounds. "kona mi". (pronounced "koonah mee" for yall americans). so soft, so tender. that phrase alone is reason enough to get a wife

Translating "Viking" Fra Norge til Amerika
So long story short, my grandmother (Not related but close enough to be called my grandmother) gave me some of her family's old books as a gift. The book I listed in the title was written in 1894 and brought over from her grandfather, Thor, to Odin, Minnesota from Oslo. It tells the story of the "Viking" which was a replica longship that was sailed to the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 from Bergen. I have been doing my best to translate it with the intention of giving it to her, at least in part.
I don't know Norwegian, so I've been doing my best to type what I'm finding into Google Translate and edit from there, while learning to read the language along the way. I have only gotten through a page so far and I think I'm running into syntax issues and some words that the translator simply isn't understanding. I was wondering if anyone could read this and let me know if this feels like it's going down the right track and maybe give some clarification. I'm assuming some of my issues are due to the fact that this is written in a style that's over 100 years old and thus uses obsolete spellings or words. I'm vaguely aware of the language split that happened around this time and think that's what's causing my issues.
I'm attaching an image of the page from the book as well in case anyone notices that I identified a letter incorrectly.
This is what I have input into the translator based on my reading
"Bergens Havnemisjion" beghndte jin Birfjomhed 21de januar 1890. On jådan misjionsgren er her jædeles nødvendig.
______________________________________________________________________________________---
This is what the translator gave back with some notes I've added.
As well (I think this must mean "Even on this side of the Atlantic" but I'm not sure) on this side of the Atlantic I am often met with the question: What made you take part in this adventure? As an answer to this question, I allow myself the following explanations:
"Bergens Havnemisjion" (Bergen's Harbor Mission ?) began in Birfjomhed on 21st January 1890. The purpose of this mission is to be a support and help for sailors staying at home, both physically and spiritually. Yes, a missionary branch is absolutely necessary here. In Bergen, with its lively sea life, there are quite a few sea elves (Possible slang for sailors? It gave me similar results in Danish and Norwegian) here at any time of the year. During jit partly faster, partly longer stay, there are many of them here, for they are temporally and spiritually in need, that a helping hand is given to them. (This sentence seems to be saying that some are in Bergen for a long time, some for a short time and they require assistance or work) This year "Bergens Havnemisjion" was founded. And it is my hope and my faith that the deed here, God forbid, yes it has become iffe yes yes to Beljigndlje. (No idea what is going on with this sentence. I think something structural like word order is messing me up.) But it has known a lot that, as far as the economy is concerned, the lack of funds has made it hard enough to keep the work going.

6.4.2024
Hi all! Sorry for neglecting this blog. I have been trying to find a job (unsuccesfully, this country is in a recession) and studying on my own (korean writing system for now).
I should start working on the applying for PhD mayhem in september. I'm excited and also stressed! But this is something i've wanted to do for a long time, so i'll try my best. I'll be applying to the literature program, and my study keywords are: posthumanism, feminism, decolonialization, old literature, horror stories, 1800s, gothic literature.
I'm also gonna start really working on my language side (norwegian to make me actually be not scared of speaking it since i know enough already to do so) and korean (help me!!! Help meeeee). I'm really slow learning languages so it's gonna be a whole thing but i'm up for it.
I've been reading a lot and trying to keep my brain active. I feel so bored and disconnected out from uni.. so i wanna get back.

Hallo!

New Year, New Project:
✨ a language blog ✨
And I am definitely not making this post at midnight, while playing Genshin Impact.
aNyways here's some info about me and this blog!
Who I am:
The name's Valor, and I go by they/them pronouns
I'm from Europe (mainly). More specific than that and it gets... complicated. Especially when it comes to languages. (I am part latino, technically, but I don't really care much for that side of me? so. yeah. european.)
I'm a teen with a burning passion for learning and a burning hatred for school
Diagnosed with ADHD in 2022 😎
Apart from learning languages, I also enjoy reading, voice acting, art and listening to music
I'm also a little obsessed with Genshin Impact right now. Just a little. You might see me messing with the languages there.
My languages:
🇺🇸 English: Native (sort of). Recently did the C1 test and I got a C2 grade. My main language, especially online. Not much to say tbh.
🇪🇸 Spanish: Native. Haven't done a test for it though, unlike English. Might in the distant future, but I don't really see a need to.
🇳🇴 Norwegian: A2-B1 I'd say? The main language I'm learning. I'm studying bokmål Norwegian, so that's how I write, but speaking is a mixture of bokmål and whatever form of nynorsk that my family speaks.
🇯🇵 Japanese: A0. I can read kana, for the most part. Barely understand any Kanji. I'm hoping to advance my level this year, though I gotta make a plan for how I'm gonna study Japanese. I don't know how to study.
Other languages: I'm not really trying to dive into any other languages right now. I'm a high school student, and my plate is already full as it is. I can understand a bit of French, since I studied it in school for 3 years. If I were to study another language, I'd... honestly struggle choosing which one. There's too many that seem so interesting to learn.
The blog:
I don't really have much experience in langblr. I follow a few langblrs, but that's it. So I don't really know what to post. Don't expect consistency from me.
I might post some multilingual shenanigans of mine, like voice acting in other languages I guess? Or that one time I decided to sing "We Don't Talk About Bruno", but each character was a different language. Random stuff like that.
I was also considering doing a weekly or monthly recap of what I've done for Norwegian and Japanese, just to see my progress. Also a plan of what to study, otherwise I'm running around like a headless chicken.
This is all hypothetical. I'll probably update this in the future, depending on how this blog goes. Who knows?
Anyways, with that out of the way (and considering how late it is for me right now), that's that for this introductory post. I'm not really sure how to end this, so...
Ha det!
