June 3 - Imperial Palace and Yasukuni Shrine
I can finally confirm that my jet lag is cured. Thank god, as we had to walk many, many miles today to reach both our locations (while we metro’d at first the rest of our excursion was on foot). The first stop was the Imperial Palace, and here the Japanese love for pine trees was on full display as the entire grounds were covered in beautiful pine trees managed in such a way that they appeared like large bonzai trees. While the outer moat of the palace no longer exists the middle and interior moat still do, and it’s no wonder the palace was never invaded. The moats are more like rivers with steep rock faces on either side. While we sadly couldn’t enter the main palace as it’s regularly closed, we walked around the perimeter eventually entering an open area of the grounds which used to be the emperors personal garden. Here we were also able to see an original guard barracks and the various gates that were used to manage movement through the grounds. After, we walked to the controversial Yasukuni shrine. The entrance to the shrine had the biggest torii gate I’ve seen since we’ve arrived. The shrine itself however felt rather lackluster (for reasons I’ll get into shortly) so I only collected my stamp and left quickly after. Later in the day I went to Shibuya once again to visit the Nujabes tribute located in Tower Records (R.I.P Nujabes). Here I purchased one of his vinyl which would cost me an ungodly amount back in the states. I walked around for some food and found this amazing kebab stall (the smell was divine) and a full bowl of food only got 5 bucks!!! I was really shocked so I bought 2 :). That concludes my day as I’m back home now writing this.
Academic Reflection
Our reading focused entirely on the Yasukuni shrine and the controversy surrounding it. The controversy exists in 14 Class A war criminals who are enshrined with the rest of Japans war dead (Japanese government promised that war dead would become kami in death, pushing heavily nationalist sentiment). While the controversy isn’t necessarily domestics (some elements are) the main issues comes from Japans regional neighbors in Korea and China who were directly impacted by those war criminal and the nationalist sentiment that gripped imperialist Japan. The controversy arises when the Prime Minister of Japan visits the shrine in official capacity, which both nations feel is an affront that improperly addresses what Japan did in war times. The domestic issue arises from Article 9 which explicitly separates religion and the state, so eventually visits were made unofficially but this still bothered Chine and Korea. The reason I describe the shrine as lackluster is because among the ones we have visited it had what I felt the lowest energy. I guess as a foreigner I just expected more, either potential protesters (even though domestically it isn’t seen as a big issue) or hardline advocates. The reason I may have thought this is because back home statues that pay homage (for example) to Confederate generals would be the site of large gathering or heated emotions. However it was quite the opposite with individuals likely appearing to pay homage to the soldiers who laid their lives down in service for their country (as opposed to the 14 war criminals). Personally though I spend little time here for that reason, as I felt uncomfortable giving my energy to such a space.

June 2nd - Free day
Free day! Today marked our first truly truly free day to explore the city of Tokyo however we saw fit. This meant no early morning readings, no discussions, and most importantly no quizzes to start our day off. After so much needed sleeping in ( waking up at 9:00 instead of 7:00) Raj and I decided that we needed to see some more of Harajuku which meant one thing only, shopping. Our first stop amongst the many shops that Harajuku has to offer was the Air jordan which according to Raj were hard to find in the U.S. We got there much earlier than expected because the store opened at 12:00 and we were there at 11:50. The group ended up being Raj, Xander, Matthew, and me and we spent the whole day together. The most interesting thing I got myself up to was going to multiple record stores and scouting for cool and niche vinyls that I wanted. At the first one that i went to it was located inside a mall with multiple floors to it and they surprisingly had a big catalog containing artists like Sade, Radiohead, and Daft Punk, I even ended up getting the Alive 1997 album on vinyl which is usually hard to get in the states. Then the next record store was much bigger it was Tower Records which housed an astonishing 8 floors filled with all types of music contained within vinyls and discs. At the top of these floors was a little tribute to a popular Japanese fusion hiphop group called Nujabes and since I liked them so much it was only fair that I would buy their record of “Metaphorical Music” here in Japan. Both records were also a lot cheaper than they wouldve been if I tried to shop for them in the U.S, that is kinda the reason I stopped collecting vinyls, the prices quickly start to ramp up the harder the vinyl is to obtain and there aren’t many record stores or as big of a culture that still listens to music on vinyl.

2/7/1974: how strange that two of the most influential artists in hip hop history on opposite sides of the world shared the same birthday. I don’t believe in astrological energy or forces, but that’s always seem coincidentally cosmic to me. At least, that’s the way I feel when I listen to their songs. So grateful for this music that enlightens my soul and gets me thru tough times.
Still waiting on that Nujilla mixtape. 🙏🏼🙏🏾
