Today was a little challenging, Darling. Our trainer didn’t teach us something, and then when we failed at doing what she didn’t teach us she actually went off on the entire class. Yelling and talking down to us and all around being a shitty person. But she did it in front of her boss. And my boss. Who brought the director in. The director ended up asking all of us to step away for 10 minutes and ripped the trainer a new one for treating us like garbage. It was frustrating but I’m good now -R

Hozier Song Title Questions

To Be Alone: What do you think is the thing that most makes your writing stand out?

mmm there's 2 things i think, a couple things people have pointed out to me and it stuck in my head:

the first is how i write about food. a friend told me once that i write about food and eating with a sort of yearning, a unique sort of gentle intimacy. to quote, "you write about food like you want to love it, and it makes me want to love it, too." two different friends later agreed with the assessment, so i think that makes it correct, lol. i try to write about food as something casual, something domestic, but also an intimate moment - sharing a meal together, knowing somebody's usual order, cooking for someone, food is a love language, and as somebody who's always had a pretty unhealthy psychological relationship with food, it's honestly been somewhat healing for me. food is my friend. food is good. eating is a safe time with people who care about me.

the second is that i try to write "living worlds." each character, no matter how small, has a life and personality beyond the role they're given in the story. there's news reports that don't matter in the slightest. places have history, people have a story to tell. it might not be interesting, and we might not learn what it is, but it's there. characters have friends outside the main cast who the protagonist may only know about from hearsay, because it's not important to the plot. the scary salarian spectre helps a batarian resistance shepard had never heard of before. balak's mooks have names and varying opinions on the situation. shepard and nihlus needing to talk to the councilor interrupts his casual hangout time with his wife and his friend. at any given point we're intruding on somebody else's story, and it makes the world feel more alive and realistic.

NWFWMB: What sort of antagonists do you like to write? Is the conflict in your story even driven by an antagonistic character?

oh man lemme think. i'd have to say my favorite kinds of antagonists are ones who are similar to the protagonist somehow, but with one key difference. for example, without giving too much away, the Big Conflict in exdiff is driven by the fact that while desolas moved on after shanxi, tim didn't. harper's big plan to [redacted] could have been accomplished without cerberus, and in fact he may have even been able to complete it sooner and without anyone catching on until it was too late, but because he refused to just let go of what happened, he took the time to build himself a big supremacist army instead. desolas is still... desolas, of course, he's still an asshole, but he's allowed himself to let go of his anger and work past it. they're both racist bastards, but tim is stuck in the past while des is just trying to move forward, and it's that one key choice that makes the entire series go 'round. and that's the whole theme, isn't it - how the choices we make shape who we are.

arms tonite - yes, that is what I mean. Just one more angsty song for that final catastrophe scene.also i think a song that could be interpreted as death or sex is very them 

achilles come down - with how much the two of them have been through together, it would surprise me if they hadn't had to talk each other down together. also "Remember your virtue, redemption lies plainly in truth" hurts a lot more after reading catastrophe

NWFWMB - it would honestly be a crime if there wasnt any hozier on this list. The yearning, the want and need to go to the absolute end of the world for your lover, "When I first saw you, the end was soon," and "Give your heart and soul to charity, becase the rest of you, the best of you, honey belongs to me"

the calendar - "Put another X on the calendar, summers on its deathbed, there is simply nothing worse than knowing how it ends" This song is all about them Knowing they cant be together, that the whole world is ending, that everything is going to end horribly and loving each other anyway.  

do i wanna know? - this song is about that Tense Period (whether you think they got together pre or post apocalypse, you know they had one) where they did Mutual Pining With Mixed Signals because they’re living in a dangerous situation for them to be out, so they cant tell if the other is flirting back or just Teasing Them 

heatwaves - LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN I KNOW OKAY but guys, “you just need a better life than this, you need something i can never give” its about guren Yearning and Regretting the apocalypse and debating whether it would have been better to let shinya die than to make him go through All Of This but deciding in the end that he can’t live without shinya even if it is selfish and shitty 

drive - “all we do is sit in silence waiting for a sign, sick and full of pride” its another Damn I Do Not Know If This Is Safe, Or If He Likes Me song

happy together - with the mention of “the girl you love” in the opening lines referring to someone that isnt the author, this is the perfect song for imahing them together and happy, with the tiniest touch of mahiru angst 

girlfriend - talk about Mahiru angst! This song is from both sides, trying to convince each other to ditch Mahiru for each other as if they both havent already done that. As this one one of the only songs on this list that was out before the world ended, i like to think they jokingly sing this to each other on occasion
