It’s very surprising when the door to Eddie’s trailer opens and Eddie is standing there with flowers.
It’s even more surprising when he says, “Happy one month!” with a big grin.
Steve looks back and forth between Eddie and the flowers—wildflowers by the look of them, probably picked around the edges of the trailer park. “Uh, one month of what?”
Eddie gives him an uncertain smile like he’s not sure if Steve’s being serious or not. “Of our relationship,” he says, the last syllable tilting up almost like a question.
Huh. Kind of weird, but at the start of summer Steve and Robin had an ice cream party to celebrate the year anniversary of when they started at Scoops together. So it’s not like this is completely unheard of. Except—
“You and I have been friends for longer than a month,” Steve says, “It’s been like—” he tries to count the months since spring break in his head “—at least four? Unless you don’t count when you were unconscious in the hospital, but that was only a couple weeks, so—”
“I mean one month of our relationship,” Eddie says, putting emphasis on the word. And now his eyebrows are drawn together. Face concerned. And Steve is clearly missing something here.
Did something significant happen a month ago? Some moment where they moved from friends to best friends or something? It was probably about a month or so ago the first time Steve spent the night at Eddie’s trailer, but that wasn’t a huge deal. Steve has spent the night at the Byers’ house before and it’s not like he and Jonathan are breaking out the balloons to commemorate it.
Steve feels guilty, because clearly there’s something that Eddie thinks he should know that he doesn’t. He doesn’t like this nervous look on Eddie’s face. Steve tries to think like Nancy, tries to put the clues together. But he’s not Nancy. So he’s lost.
“I’m sorry, dude,” Steve says, “I don’t get what you mean.”
Eddie deflates.
“I know we haven’t necessarily defined it.” His voice is wavering, eyes getting watery. Shit shit shit, what did Steve do? This is so completely out of nowhere and Steve doesn’t know how to fix it. “But I didn’t realize it was actually that insignificant to you.”
Steve shoots his arm out to stop Eddie from closing the door on him. He needs to figure out what’s going on so he can make it right, and that’s not gonna happen if Eddie shuts him out. “Eds, seriously, you’re gonna have to fill me in,” he says, “‘Cause I honestly don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.”
“Seriously?” Eddie asks, anger over taking the sadness in his voice, “You’re gonna act like you don’t know?”
“I don’t!” Steve nearly shouts, desperate. “Please, man, I’m not trying to piss you off here. Whatever it is, I wanna make it right. You just have to tell me what you mean.”
“You and I,” Eddie says. Looking at him like it should be obvious. When it’s so, so not. It makes Steve want to scream. “We’re—I thought we were together.”
“Together? Like…together how?”
Steve doesn’t think he’s ever seen Eddie look this pissed off. “Use your goddamned brain, Harrington,” he spits, “Like together.”
Oh. Okay. That’s…something. It’s not that Steve would necessarily be opposed, or even that he hasn’t thought of it. It’s just not true. They’re not together. And he’s not sure why Eddie thinks they are. Yeah, they’re close, but it’s not like they’re closer than Steve and Robin. It’s not like they’re closer than Steve was to Tommy back in the day. He and Eddie haven’t done anything that feels outside the realm of friendship to him. And he definitely didn’t realize that Eddie saw it any differently.
“Um,” Steve says, aware that he’s standing like an idiot on Eddie’s doorstep and needs to answer. “Why?”
“Oh my God,” Eddie says, making as if to close the door again. Steve barely catches it in time. It makes Eddie glare at him. “There’s no way you’re being serious,” he says.
Keeping one hand on the door, Steve throws up the other one in a gesture he stole from Robin. “I really am,” he says, “You know what the kids say. I’m an idiot. You really have to lay things out for me.”
That at least makes Eddie soften a few degrees. “You’re not an idiot, Steve,” he says, “You’re just—oblivious, apparently.”
“Yeah, that too.”
Eddie sighs. “Just come in. We can talk about it.” He steps back and lets Steve come inside. The flowers are still clutched in Eddie’s hand, starting to wilt. Eddie sets them on the table before joining Steve on the couch.
“A month ago is when you stayed over for the first time,” Eddie says. Steve nods. “And you kissed me.” Steve nods again. Eddie lifts his eyebrows significantly. “You’re not seeing the connection?”
Steve shrugs. “I mean, I guess there’s other ways you could construe that,” he says, “But I thought it was, like, a friend kiss. A goodnight kiss.”
“A friend kiss,” Eddie says flatly. “You kiss a lot of your friends?”
“Sure,” Steve says, “Well, Robin prefers forehead kisses and Jonathan’s more of a hug guy, but I used to kiss Tommy and Carol all the time.”
Disbelief is the main emotion on Eddie’s face. And a whole lot of other ones that Steve can’t quite parse out. “So—everything we’ve done,” Eddie says, slowly, like he’s trying to come to terms with it. “It’s all just…been normal friend shit to you?”
Steve thinks back over the last month, trying to think if anything stands out in his head as non-platonic. Maybe there’s been a time or two when he was kissing Eddie or cuddling up to him in bed or sitting on his lap during D&D where Steve’s felt a sort of stirring deep in his belly. But he figured that was one-sided. His body’s reaction to whatever was happening and not a manifestation of, like, feelings or something. After all, the same thing used to happen with Tommy when they’d do similar stuff. And clearly they were just friends.
After a full twenty seconds of Steve not answering, Eddie drops his head in his hands. “Holy shit,” he mutters. Then he lifts his head. “This—you—the other day. You slept over. We made out. You—you took my fucking shirt off, Steve.”
Yeah, that did happen. And Steve doesn’t have a great explanation for it. “I don’t know,” he says, “It was the heat of the moment or whatever.”
“The heat of the moment,” Eddie repeats, and Steve can’t tell if he’s on the verge of tears or the verge of laughing. Eddie puts his arm on the back of the couch and leans toward Steve. “Can you honestly say that you’re not attracted to me at all?”
Annoyingly, Steve can feel his face start to heat. “I never said that,” he mutters.
For the first time, Eddie looks triumphant. “So you are attracted to me?”
“Yeah, man,” Steve says, squirming uncomfortably. Of course he’s attracted to Eddie. What’s not to be attracted to? He’s smart, funny, hot, good with the kids, good on the guitar, good at kissing. Helped save the world. “You’re, like, it for me. I definitely think about you that way. I just didn’t think you thought about me that way.”
Eddie laughs, the sound containing more disbelief than humor, but still overall a good thing. “I can’t believe the guy who’s been sharing my bed for the past month didn’t think I was into him.”
“Hey, you’re not the only person whose bed I’ve shared.” Shit, that was a bad way to put it. “Platonically.”
Shaking his head, Eddie laughs again. “Clearly, your idea of platonic does not line up with mine,” he says. “But you mean it? You’re into me?”
“Yeah, Eds,” Steve says, “I’m into you.”
“So, does that mean you’d want to be my boyfriend?”
“Apparently I already have been for the past month,” Steve says, grinning.
Eddie grins back. “Doesn’t count if you didn’t know.”
“Then we can count from today,” Steve says, “Starting now, I’m your boyfriend.”
He hasn’t finished saying the last word before Eddie is surging forward and taking Steve’s face in his hands. He shifts onto Steve’s lap, kissing him deeply.
And it doesn’t feel platonic at all.

Eddie gets home from the shop covered in car grease and tired but satisfied with a good day’s work. Opens the door to catch Wayne on his way out,
“Your boy was here earlier,” he tells him clasping his shoulder as greeting.
“Dustin?” Eddie asks confused, trying to remember if they were supposed to meet today.
“No, not the kid. The boyfriend.” Wayne says nonchalantly, moving toward his car.
Eddie splutters and coughs, “Steve? Wayne! He’s not my boyfriend!”
Wayne stops mid-step and turns, looking actually distressed when he asks, “Why not!?”
If his life was a cartoon, Eddie is pretty sure his jaw would be hitting the floor right now, “What do you mean, why not?!”
He raises his hands preparing to start numbering with his fingers all the reasons why and opens his mouth and then… nothing comes up.
Actually, Wayne has a point… Why isn’t Steve his boyfriend?
Wayne fixes him with a look and Eddie closes his mouth and shrugs sheepishly.
“Eddie, the kid just showed up with three tupperwares full of homemade food because he said, and I quote ‘accidentally made too much’ which is a horrible excuse frankly, he’s a horrible liar. Which, for the record, I recond it’s a wonderful quality,” He clasps his shoulder reassuringly and then slaps his cheek softly, “Better get your head out of your ass soon and get on with it, son.”
And then he gets in his car and leaves Eddie there, still standing by the door, mouth slightly agape.
💞
Twenty minutes later he’s standing outside Steve’s and Robin's duplex, knocking on the front door loudly.
“Comming! Oh! Eddie, hi!” Steve answers, and just like always, it punches the air right out of Eddie’s lungs when he sees him. He’ll never get used to how beautiful he is.
He’s barefoot and wearing a huge sweater that makes it look like he’s not wearing anything underneath but Eddie knows he is wearing his green little shorts, the ones that should be illegal. It’s his go-to comfy outfit and it always makes Eddie want to cuddle up with him on the couch and kiss every inch of him.
“Why aren’t you my boyfriend?” Eddie asks, not even bothering to say hi.
Steve blinks at him and opens and closes his mouth quite a few times, it makes Eddie think of those cute fish that throw kisses.
“I- I-” He stammers and then he huffs and leans on the doorframe, and smiles at Eddie with his head cocked to one side. It’s a ten thousand wats smile and it just about blinds him,
“I wanted to ask but- Wait, how come you suddenly showed up?” And then his eyes light up, “Was it the tuppers?”
“What?” Eddie asks confused, “No, Wayne asked me and-” And then he remembers Wayne saying Steve had dropped food for them, “Were you trying to feed me into a relationship?”
Steve shrugs, “Maybe… everything else I tried wasn’t working so…”
Eddie thought about it before while talking to Wayne. When he couldn’t come up with any reasons as to why he wasn’t dating Steve, he realized all the little things they’d been doing for each other. Both of them trying to court the other while being incredibly oblivious to each other.
They really are two idiots in love.
Eddie chuckles, and steps into Steve’s space, he moves a strand of hair out his eyes and lovingly places it behind his ear, “So… would you? Be my boyfriend?” he asks him.
Steve smiles and grabs him by the collar of his shirt and pulls him inside, closing the door to the outside world.
Eddie takes that as a ‘yes’.

Before the Upside Down, Steve Harrington could sleep like the dead. Once he laid his head on the checkered pattern pillow, Steve would be oblivious to anything happening in the world around him as he found solace in his dreams.
Steve would never admit it to Tommy H or Carol, but his dreams were his only safe place. In Steve's dream world, he wasn't the son to absent parents or the perfect King Steve; he was whatever version of himself that would've never been allowed around the Harringtons or the population at Hawkins High. Steve was comforted by the anonymity that was created as he slept till an alarm or the sunlight peeking through his curtains woke him.
Before the Upside Down, Eddie Munson would laugh as he told the rest of Corroded Coffin about how much he slept during the weekend. But, groan when Uncle Wayne stomped into his bedroom at 4pm wondering, "Boy, since when did you become a vampire?"
Basically, Eddie found it hilarious that he could sleep 16 hours a day and still go to bed at 9pm every night. One thing about Eddie Munson before that fated afternoon with Chrissy Cunningham, he could sleep like a corpse and never worry about sleep avoiding his clutches. Because as Uncle Wayne or a member of Corroded Coffin could tell anyone, Eddie loved to sleep and would theoretically kill anyone who tried to disrupt his slumber.
After the Upside Down, Eddie Munson and Steve Harrington found solace in one another as they struggled to remember who they were before circumstances led them to emotional, mental, and physical scars. Steve could no longer find comfort in his dream world as it replayed his most traumatizing moments from the last couple of years. Eddie could no longer sleep like the dead since he actually knew what it felt like to lay limp and face death.
Eddie and Steve stare into one another's eyes as they share a pillow in Steve's massive bed. Eddie whispers to Steve about how envious he is of his past self as he dramatically recounts Uncle Wayne's stomps or Corroded Coffin's scoffs. As Eddie spoke, Steve wonders if Eddie could be trusted with his deepest secrets about who he wishes he could be.
As Eddie's giggles fade into the dark of the night, Steve clears in throat and begins to tell Eddie about the lack of safety he has felt since turning 12 and being handed bundles of money that were to be budgeted until his parents came back home from whatever business trip Jonathan Harrington needed to attend. Steve mumbles about Tommy and Carol, or anyone else, never being able to fill the hollow space that was this mausoleum of a house until Dustin Henderson hijacked Nancy's roses and forced Steve to go on a wild demo dog chase. With a smile that actually reaches Steve's eyes, he tells Eddie how he finally knew what a mutual love felt like when Robin refused to get a new job without Steve.
Eddie desperately wants to read between the lines and believe himself to be someone who brought something into Steve's life. The begging words he sends up to whatever universal force doesn't want to continue fucking his life are interrupted as Steve looks Eddie in the eyes and admits, "Eddie Munson, you brought light and noise into my life."
Steve Harrington never understood how significant it was to feel the sun on his skin until Eddie woke up from his coma after his encounter with the bats, and begged for the blinds in his hospital room to be opened. Eddie's smile changed as he adjusted to the new scars on his skin, but Steve has never seen something so beautiful in his life.
Steve flinched in noisy environments when he remembers how angry his father would get if Steve existed too loudly. But, since Eddie took Steve to the middle of nowhere and convinced him to just scream, Steve has found himself seeking out music that taught him to release his emotions instead of pushing them further and further down.
Steve Harrington finally found safety in the real world when Eddie Munson whispers, "Stevie, please let me kiss you."

ok idk who this could be with, but fic idea: fake dating trope inspired by the song 'hate to be lame' by lizzy mcalpine and finneas... it has POTENTIAL.!!
Hate to be lame, but I might love you | Steve Harrington
BABE THIS CONCEPT IS SO </3 POTENTIAL INDEED!!! I'm gonna admit I went wayyy off track from the song and kind of just went feral with the concept of fake dating Steve.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You're hands are sweaty."
"Yeah, well, so are yours."
"That's because my hand is covered in the sweat from your sweaty hand." your voice comes as a sharp whisper that only Steve can hear as you walk toward your friends not two days after your little agreement.
"Oh shut up."
"Why do we have to hold hands anyway?"
"Because that's what couples do, trust me I'm the expert." Steve nudges your side with his elbow, and you push back harder, making him flinch.
"Yeah, because you've had such successful past relationships." You're grumbling and acting more like a child as the regret sinks in. Why you'd agreed to this even to assist the romance between your two friends was beyond you. There were far easier ways to get the same result.
"That was a low blow." Steve sounds only slightly deflated but his energy returns as the rest of your friends begin to notice the intertwined fingers and the smiles you're sending them, that while fake, are convincing enough.
"Hey, this is new!" It's Dustin, always the first to voice an opinion, and he's eyeing the both of you as though he's Sherlock Holmes inspecting a fresh crime scene. "Is this a cute thing or a friend thing?" he's frowning, and you offer up an answer.
"Can't a friend thing be a cute thing also?"
"So it's a friend thing?" Dustin raises a brow and looks to Steve. For a second you swear they have some sort of silent and private conversation before Steve interjects with words that seem to startle the entire group surrounding you.
"No, it's not a friend thing." He moves his hand from yours, opting to drape his arm over your shoulder, making a show whilst you wipe your hand discreetly on your shorts.
"Surprise..??" the word comes strained from your lips and you are thankful for the fact that Steve is such a charmer. Whilst he's been more than a bad liar in the past he seems like a professional actor now, award-winning even as he sells your relationship to the group.
Your first kiss in his car one day after work, and first date at the small bakery down the street from your house. The way he'd been crushing on you since he saw you beat the hell out of some Demogorgons to defend the kids, and just how happy you were together. How he was so convincing you didn't know, but you almost found yourself believing him for parts of it, as if you didn't already know the truth. It was all fake, a ruse put together so that Steve could convince Robin and Nancy that he had in fact moved on. A perfectly crafted fake relationship so that Robin and Nancy could finally get together and feel guilt free.
"Well, I can't say I didn't see it coming." It's Dustin again, forever the speechmaker, and the smile on his lips is unbearably sweet. He's oblivious, it seems, and it occurs to you then that the little scheme you and Steve put together might have some negative impacts. Dustin cared about Steve in the way a little brother looks up to the older sibling, or perhaps the way a son looked up to a father, and maybe it wasn't so good for the boy to get attached to the idea of Steve finally finding some romantic peace. After all, it was nothing romantic of the sort, and whilst the game you had going wouldn't affect Dustin directly, it did seem that he was excited over the concept of you and Steve together.
Despite these thoughts, you find yourself moving an arm around Steve's waist, leaning into him as if it were real, because if you were doing this, you were sure as hell gonna do it right. Dustin smiles, somehow wider than before, before moving off to meet the other younger members of the group. Robin eyes the two of you from a distance, with something of a confused yet proud expression, and you hope that for whatever reason, she believes the show you're putting on.
When you feel Steve's breath against your ear, the shivers that run down your spine are barely controlled. "Good job." it's a whisper as he squeezes your shoulder, "I'm gonna go get us some drinks."
And with that, he walks away, leaving you to wonder how exactly this is going to work.
Tumblr media
It goes well for the most part and soon you start to see changes in Robin and Nancy's behavior toward each other. They seem closer, more interested now that Robin's not afraid to make a move on the girl Steve had once been so hung up on.
But you can't deny that in private it has become somewhat awkward between you and Steve. Something changed over the past few weeks of pretending and you're not quite sure where it all went wrong, but the teasing relationship you'd once had was now evaporating before your eyes.
Steve currently had an arm over your shoulder as he sat beside you in the old bakery café where he had claimed you'd had your first kiss to the rest of the group. The old leather booth was supposedly filled with the fondest of memories for the both of you, though in truth you had never entered the place until today.
"You two really do make a hot couple." It's Robin leaning her elbows on the table from the booth across from you and Steve, Nancy at her side though they sit further apart.
"I second this," Nancy smiles, a wide and sweet expression that makes you really believe her. And suddenly you feel bad for lying to them both.
"Here," Before you can dwell on the feeling, Nancy's pulled out an old camera, one she was gifted by Jonathan back when they were something of a pair themselves. She still keeps it close, and she'd planned to use it for some journalism work later in the day, but it seems she's willing to waste some of the camera's potential now.
"Smile you two." She's peering into the camera, and instinctively you lean into Steve, smiling for the shot. But that doesn't seem to appease either Robin or the eldest Wheeler sibling, both of them scheming to create the best memories for you both.
"C'mon Steve," Robin instructs, "Give her a kiss for the camera." Steve does so hesitantly, pressing a short peck to your cheek and waiting for the camera to click, but nothing happens.
When he looks up he finds both Nancy and Robin chuckling before Nancy herself begins to speak. "Look, Steve, I know you're trying to be polite because, well, we used to be something—but I really don't mind if you two kiss. I'm happy for you both, and I assure you I've moved on." She spares a glance to Robin and it would have been sweet if you weren't panicking deep inside. You had yet to kiss Steve at all and the plan had been that you would never have to but now that your excuse seemed to be up in flames you weren't sure what to do, or say.
Steve didn't seem at all bothered, and maybe that should have concerned you more than it did, but honestly, you were grateful for the confidence he held when yours was nowhere to be found.
"Yeah, you're right. We didn't want to cause any drama with, you know," Steve gestures between himself and you, "Us."
"But that's the thing!" Nancy exclaims in a rather Robin-like fashion. (Perhaps the girl was rubbing off on her a little too much.) "I'm happy for you, and I really don't mind." She raises the camera again, a smile tugging at her lips as Robin shuffles a little closer to peak through the lens with her. "Do some cute couple shit for the camera. You may kiss your girlfriend." Robin says, and a nervous laugh escapes you as Steve locks his eyes with yours. it's a look that speaks,'You really wanna do this?' and 'We can back out now if you want.' all at once, but there's something else there that you can't quite decode.
You nod in response to his silent question, however, and it takes a moment before either of you can get up the guts to do anything at all. Steve leans in first, slow and steady, and you know he notices the breath that catches in your throat. His lips so close, his hair just barely brushing your forehead as he moves downward, his face inching ever closer to yours. But he stops, and it seems as if time itself does too, when Mike Wheeler bursts into the bakery, tall frame and skinny limps carrying him through the door and toward the booth at which the four of you sit.
"Nancy, god it took forever to find you! Mom's going crazy over dinner tonight and—" It all seems to fade off. Mike is still talking but you block him out, a ringing in your ears replacing his words as you wonder what could have happened had a few more seconds passed before the boys' arrival.
Either way, it would have meant nothing, because you don't like Steve like that, and you never will. Right?
Steve is sitting, brows furrowed beside you, staring at your figure as you watch Mike Wheeler ramble on about something Nancy needs to come home for. You don't seem to be listening and he doesn't blame you because honestly, he doesn't know if he is either, but he wonders what you are thinking about.
He's certainly thinking about things he shouldn't be.
But soon Nancy stands, and Robin follows suit and they say something that the both of you ignore. And they leave, as you wave them goodbye, and they say they'll be in touch. All of a sudden you're sat next to Steve, alone with a chocolate chip muffin between you.
"That was a close one don't you think?" It's you who says it and your voice startles Steve. You see him jump, and then adjust himself to sit like the cool high school heartthrob he had once been.
"Real close, sorry." the apology is genuine, and Steve pauses, looking around the bakery. "You wanna get out of here?"
You manage a nod, shuffling from the booth awkwardly. "Let's go."
Tumblr media
"Did you want me to drop you home?" Steve's leaning on the side of his car as he watches you, waiting. He looks so different somehow, changed from the teenager you would sit next to in the chemistry lab. He hadn't spoken to you much at all back then, and you would do all the hard work for the passing grades, but now he seems....lost.
You suppose fighting interdimensional monsters can do that to a person. That kind of thing changes a perspective for sure, and the look in his eyes can be thrown down to such a concept.
"Sure," you go to say more, but decide against it as Steve moves around the car to open the passenger side door for you. The kind of thing you had yet to experience for a long time. When he gets behind the wheel he's focused, staring out the windshield.
"So, I'll drop you home." it's awkward, unsure and it's hard to find a response.
"Well, I don't know what else we're supposed to do."
Steve clears his throat, tongue darting out to wet his lips. "We could go to work—your work I mean, show off a little to the kid at the checkout. The one you have a crush on."
"He's literally the same age as us Steve. Stop calling him a kid." with your arms folded over your chest you watch Steve for a reaction, and he gives you one. His nose wrinkles up, turning to face you.
"He looks like a kid."
"He does not!" there's a laugh hidden behind your words, and Steve smiles, just a little. It's a nice thing to see.
"He has a babyface, he's got the smooth face of a baby."
"Like you're one to talk Harrington," you reach over, running a hand across his cheek. "You've got nothing on this face of yours."
Steve isn't nervous. He's not. The feeling of your skin on his, the warmth of your hand on his face has no effect on his heart rate. His heart beats this fast all the time. "I'll have you know that I've got a moustache coming in."
You pull back, buckling yourself into your seat. "That stubble on your upper lip doesn't count for shit Steve, don't give yourself a big head."
"Alright, well am I taking you home or what?" He wants to hide the grin on his lips, though he can't seem to put it away. It's stuck, the expression seemingly permanent. You're smiling too, and when you look over at him, his hands on the wheel and yours in your lap, it's all over.
"Let's go give babyface a run for his money."
-
It doesn't work out like it's supposed to, and as you walk into the store, out of uniform and entirely out of character, your confidence fades. "This was a bad idea." you mumble the words to Steve, who stands beside you, waiting to make a minor scene.
He looks down at you, peculiar frown pulling at his brows. "It's a great idea. Just making a little chaos, that's all." he doesn't sound like himself either, and in truth, his eyes are now scanning around the store, waiting for your target to show.
"Let's just go, Steve. It's dumb—this is dumb." before you can say anything more Steve's got his arm sliding softly around your waist, pulling you just that bit closer to his side. You don't flinch at the touch, the touch of a friend acting as though they're more. You should think more of it, feel more uncomfortable than you do, but you don't. You see your coworker approaching, apron over his regular uniform. You don't think you'd ever had a crush on him in the first place, despite what Steve had persisted, and even though the guy is cute, it doesn't seem to mean anything. Looking up at Steve is a struggle, and when you do you find his eyes still locked on the fated supermarket employee.
"Steve," muttering his name brings his eyes back to yours, and his gaze looks slightly different than it did before. "Let's get out of here."
"You sure?" the question hangs in the words, but something in him sounds relieved at the concept, as if all of a sudden this doesn't matter to him either. But he doesn't have a second to lead you away from the store before something else seems to enter the equation. Someone else.
"Hey, didn't expect to see you here." it's your coworker 'crush' standing before you with a strained grin. "It's your day off." He's says it in a way that suggests he's reminding you, in case you've forgotten. You don't miss the way his eyes flicker to Steve, and in particular, Steve's arm, still around your waist, his hand placed so convincingly as his fingers press affectionately into your side.
"Yeah, just came in to get some things." you smile back at the boy genuinely, as Steve buts into the conversation.
"Just some snacks...for date night." he's playing his part still, you realize, even if you weren't.
"Date night? You two are—I didn't see that coming." you think you must have imagined it, the deflated falter in your friends words. He didn't like you, he couldn't. He wouldn't. He was hardly a friend anyway, just the guy behind the checkout that you would wave and smile to during the work day. You couldn't possibly be hurting him with this, could you?
Steve squeezes you closer to his side, and it seems to be going a little too far. You're not sure if he does it just to get under the skin of the guy in front of you, or if he's trying to tell you something along the lines of "it's working."
You hope it's none of the above.
"Well, we should get going." diffusing the situation is all you can think to do, but now leaving isn't an option. If you don't exit the store with the so called 'snacks' you came in for, it might just mix things up further. You grab Steve by the hand, pulling him toward the candy aisle, sending your seemingly heartbroken coworker a sympathetic goodbye smile.
Once out of sight and snooping range, you give up the act. "Steve, this has to stop."
"What no, Nancy and Robin—they've just started connecting." Steve sounds disappointed, grasping for something to hold on to.
"There are other ways we can play matchmaker with them, but this...it's going too far. I can't do it." the way your eyes plead with Steve to end things, sends shivers across his spine. He feels the sting of your words as if it's all real, but of course it never was.
"So, we're breaking up?" he mumbles, trying not to let the words remind him of the familiar heartbreaks he's had before.
"Don't say it like that," there's a gentle laugh from your lips, soft, calmer than you were before. "That makes it sound like we were really a thing."
That cuts Steve deep. He can't help it, and his mind wanders to the feeling of your hand still holding his. He doesn't think you know that you're still doing it, so he squeezes your hand with his own, testing the waters. You let go.
You'd been Steve's fake girlfriend for over a month, and now suddenly, standing amongst bags of chocolate and sweets, you weren't anymore.
"So, just friends again?" You extend a hand as if to shake on the deal, and Steve accepts, though this time there is no affection in the way his hand holds yours.
"Friends." He confirms, and it really is over.
Tumblr media
You don't let on to your friends directly that you'd split apart. Maybe due to the hopes that Robin and Nancy could make their own way a little faster whilst they were still under the impression of you and Steve in love. But you no longer hold hands in public, and you don't follow each other around like lost dogs.
It's weird, knowing that Steve isn't trailing behind you like he used to, and it's odd not having his car pull up in your driveway every day. You were so used to him surrounding you after the few months of being his partner in crime, that the distance from him has set up an ache in your heart.
Steve feels similarly, and the way the man goes about his days now are less interesting, and far less fun. Dustin caught on almost immediately, and despite the deal Steve made with you to never tell a soul in the group about your little agreement, he can't help but tell the young boy everything.
"So what you're saying is you never dated in the first place?" Dustin questions, Steve nodding.
"Yeah."
"But you think you might have fallen in love with her for real?"
Hearing Dustin say it out loud sends a pang of longing through Steve and he knows then that he most definitely has fallen head over heels for someone he was never supposed to love in the first place.
"Yeah. That sounds about right."
"Dude," Dustin has a grin on his lips and Steve can tell he's about to made fun of before it happens. "You are so lame. Honestly, can you just admit to yourself that you had a crush on her from the start? It was never fake to you, was it?" The kid is smart, and can see right through his older friend. He held no surprise when Steve told him the truth, because he found it quite obvious how Steve truly felt. It was why Steve's stories about how he fell in love with you felt so real to the group in the first place. Because they were the furthest thing from fake.
Steve doesn't respond, thinking it over. Dustin is right he realizes, and it's not surprising at all.
"You gotta tell her, man." Dustin speaks again, and Steve nods.
"Yeah. I know."
Tumblr media
Two days later and Mike has invited everyone over, including the older kids, to spend the day together. It gives you Deja vu as you enter the house, having been to a similar hangout with Steve months before when you first introduced yourselves as a couple. Now you walk in alone, no sweaty hand to hold.
Steve's heart skips a beat when he sees you, and Dustin nudges him hard with his shoulder, as if Steve hasn't already been alerted of your presence. He thinks you look beautiful, but he always does. He realizes these things now. Now that he knows how he feels.
"Hey," Steve stands to greet you and you offer him a friendly smile back.
"Hey, Steve." It's still awkward between you, and has been ever since the fake breakup. Perhaps that's due to the fact you've both been avoiding each other like the plague since it happened.
"I need to talk to you about something later, is that okay?" He keeps his voice low, not wanting the others to hear about the private matters he wants to discuss. He can tell he's confusing you, but you agree thanks to his puppy dog eyes.
"Yeah, okay." Despite your agreeance, you plan to avoid Steve for the rest of the day, solely due to the fact you've begun to feel things that you shouldn't be. You were so used to being his friend, and seeing him as one, but now your thoughts have begun to linger on him more than they should, as do your eyes.
You can't help but admire the way he is with the kids, and the way his hands comb through his hair casually as if he doesn't know just how appealing it makes him. You focus a little too much on whether he's looking at you or not, and the sound of his laugh is too familiar now.
He was your friend, and whilst you'd promised he would stay that way, you weren't so sure you could keep it.
"Hey," Steve has caught you in the kitchen, going to get more soda for the party after a long day of avoidance. You'd hoped to spend a few minutes alone, and most of all, had hoped to keep evading him, but Steve had other plans.
You place the sodas on the counter, closing the fridge with caution. "It sure is hot today." You mumble in the hopes of keeping the conversation light. You know he's here to confront you about the distance you've been keeping from him. It can't be anything else.
"Yeah, it's summer." He feels bad about cornering you in the kitchen, but he knows this might be one of the only chances he has at asking you how you feel. Even with what Dustin had said, Steve doesn't know if he can bring himself to tell you what's been going on inside his head over the past couple of months, but he hopes you'll be willing to tell him what's been happening in yours.
"Are you okay?" even though you saw it coming, Steve's question still startles you.
You nod, though your voice involuntarily raises an octave. "Yeah, I'm fine. How are you?" You're not fine, and the lie is clear, but Steve is more than honest with you.
"I'm tired of us acting like we haven't fucked up our relationship." He leans against the counter in a kind of defeated gesture, weakening your resolve. "I don't want to keep fighting to be around you. I want you to feel comfortable around me again. Call me an idiot, a loser or something, like you used to."
"I can't." your whisper seems so loud in your own ears.
"I promise I'll call you pretentious and dramatic right back, just say it. Call me a name, make it how it used to be." there's a kind of desperation hidden within Steve's words, one you haven't heard before. One you doubt anyone has heard before. It stands in the silence, for your ears alone.
"You really want me to list all the shit I hate about you?" There's a shake to your voice, as if you're close to screaming or crying, but you're not sure which will come first.
"Well, I didn't say that—"
"I hate your stupid hair. Your teeth are too straight, and I don't like the way you talk to me, how your voice gets all soft and sweet. It's irritating when you smile because it makes me smile too, and you're laugh just—it just pisses me off." You stop for breath, sucking in the air as you focus on the boy in front of you. You've taken a few steps toward him with your words spoken, slow, and steady. "And I hate the fact you made me like you. I hate the way you're so unhateable to everyone around you, including me."
There's a small twitch of Steve's lips, and you can tell they want to pull upwards into the smile you just claimed to despise. He doesn't let them though, pushing himself back from the counter. "You wanna know what I hate about you?"
Your heart leaps into your throat but you don't show any sign of response, staring at him with as much blankness as you can muster.
"Absolutely everything, and nothing at all." He says it quietly. He doesn't need volume to get his point across. He's taken the steps needed to close the gap between you, and he's waiting for your approval. "In fact, I think I could love you, if you'll let me."
You let out a breath, somewhere between relief and excitement. "You're so lame, Harrington."
"You know you love it." he leans in closer, and you do the same, lips brushing against his.
"You know, I think I could love you too, if you'll let me of course." you allow yourself a grin at the sight of one on Steve's own lips, contagious as always.
"I think we could come to an arrangement." He's fucking with you, but you're too impatient to respond with anything but a kiss, gentle and sweet to his lips. You're not the first person to kiss Steve Harrington, but Steve thinks you might be the best.
"Come on, the others are waiting." You pick up the sodas left on the counter and push past Steve with the widest smile you've held in weeks, and Steve follows close behind.

Part 1
Wayne Munson can read a person within a few minutes when being in the same room together
So when he comes home from work one evening, he immediately clocks an upset Steve. It’s not even surprising to see the boy in his living room nowadays. What is surprising is that his nephew is no where to be found. Neither of them speak as he takes his work boots off and jacket, then makes a quick cup of coffee and settles in the recliner.
“So, why’re you upset? My nephew forget a date?” He sips at his coffee and watches Steve tense up, he can tell the boy is holding himself back from looking towards him. It makes Wayne pause, clearly something is actually wrong. “This serious, boy?”
It doesn’t take a genius to see how much whatever it is, is really effecting Steve. It’s the way he holds himself back, even with being hunched over. How tense his shoulders are, that his hair is a mess and how he’s clutching his hands. Truthfully, Wayne can tell the boy is trying hard not to cry.
The day he officially met Steve Harrington within five minutes of talking, he grew a soft spot for the boy. It wasn’t with the way he talked about how much he liked Eddie or the way he held himself. It was because of the longing in his eyes when he thought no one was looking.
They were in a hospital waiting room, Eddie was still in surgery and Wayne had shown up to a room full of kids. The reporter girl had pulled him aside to explain what was happening and he was listening to her but glancing around the room when his eyes caught sight of a young man sitting on the floor with his back against the wall and his eyes were trained on the sight of a kid with curly hair in the arms of a woman. To anyone else, it would just be a friend watching someone else.
But to Wayne? He knew what longing looks like. Has seen it many times in his life. Especially in Eddie. The biggest difference between Steve and Eddie? His nephew learnt to hide that look, figured out how vulnerable it can be.  With Steve it’s noticeable, and, it seems he wears his emotions like a jacket. It’s there and open for all to see. With all that, he immediately knew that he’ll be there to care for Steve in anyway he’d want.
He also knew, as soon as Eddie was able, that he’d be right there with him. Fast forward a few months, Wayne was correct when Eddie told him about his first date with Steve.
“I, uh. I asked him” Steve mumbles out without looking at him, “it- didn’t go as I planned”
Nodding, he places the cup down and leans forward. It’s a serious type of talk, it seems. “What happened?”
Steve shakes his head and he catches a quick sight of red teary eyes, “I told him about a gift and he panicked, thought he missed an anniversary or something. Then when I tried to ask him, it was someone’s birthday and the waiters were singing loudy. Then, then, I lost my plan and just said if he wanted to share his last name.”
He chuckles at that, but it dies down when Steve finally looks up at him. He looks just absolutely heartbroken and close to breaking completely. Schooling his face, he leans forward to grip Steve’s shoulder. It snaps his attention and Wayne’s thankful for it.
“Steve, why don’t you relax? Try again another-“
“He thought I was asking if you’d adopt me!”
Once it’s said, it’s silent. Steve’s tears have broken the invisible barrier and falling down now, it’s breaking Wayne’s old heart. Makes him want to smack Eddie upside the head for being an oblivious idiot.
“Look, how about ya go take it easy and I’ll wait up for Ed. Love that boy but he can be a bit oblivious.” Wayne shakes his head before nudging Steve’s shoulder again, “that ring of yours will get on his finger, son. Just let me talk to him”
Steve just nods, wipes at his eyes and makes his way towards Eddie’s room. Glancing at the clock, he knows Eddie won’t be back for another hour or two. Depending on if he starts on a rant, so in the meantime, he drinks his coffee and waits.
He hears the sounds of Eddie’s van nearly an hour later. He’s on his second cup, ate a quick sandwich and made sure to check if Steve followed his advice, which to his relief he did. With Steve asleep in Eddie’s room, he decided his best bet to talk with Eddie was driving. It eased his mind and with his boots back on he waits for his nephew to walk in.
“Honey, I’m hom- oh. It’s just you” Eddie looks disappointed and it makes a beeline to go to his room. Right before he’s able, he grabs hold of Eddie’s arm stopping him. “Wayne, come on. I know Stevie’s here and I’d like to join-“
He shakes his head and stands up, pull Eddie with him back towards the door, “Your boy is asleep, come with me for a drive. We gotta have a chat, alright?”
Eddie pouts but doesn’t move away, moves with him with a whine of, “but Waaaaayne! I wanna go cuddle my boyfriend!”
Rolling his eyes, he opens the door and waves a pouring Eddie out. “You’ll survive a short drive, Ed.”
Eddie dramatically groans but stomps out towards his truck and crossed his arms waiting. With another eye roll, he closes the door and joins Eddie before unlocking the doors. They both climb in silently and continue this as he drives away. It’s not until he’s on the road that Eddie finally says, “Why am I in trouble now?”
Chuckling, he shakes his head and instantly flashes back to when Eddie was fifteen and gotten in trouble in school for the first time while living with him. Wayne decided the easiest way to get anything out of the near panicking Eddie at the time was to talk while driving aimlessly around.
They’ve done this a few times since then. Eddie hasn’t caught on that it was a benefit to both of them. Emotional talks aren’t his thing. But he’ll be damned before he admits that out loud.
“Nah, ya ain’t in trouble, boy.” He finally tells him while stopping and glancing at Eddie, he’s bouncing his leg and tapping his fingers against the other leg. “Ed, serious, you ain’t in trouble. We’re just havin’ a late night drive and chat”
“About what? You only do this when I’m in trouble or, or when I came out to you” Eddie doesn’t stop his tapping but he does bring up the leg that was bouncing to lean against.
Wayne shakes his head, moving back to watch the road. Thinking over his next words, Eddie doesn’t bother with the radio and is still watching him. He knows and doesn’t call his nephew out for the staring.
“Look, I came home and your boy was upset,” He started off, glancing over quickly to see Eddie tense up. “We chatted, he’s been asking me things about ya. See if I’d know where your head is at.”
“Why- uh. Why would-“
“We both know your boy has a lot of insecurities, doubts and all that.” He came to another stop and looked over at his nephew, meeting his eyes before Eddie quickly looks away. “Don’t get lost in your insecurities right now, Ed”
Eddie shakes his head and pulls his other leg up to hug them, “why didn’t he come to me about whatever the problem is?”
He has to quickly smoother the smirk that wants to work it’s way on his face, doesn’t want to give away that Eddie’s worried over the wrong thing, “Wasn’t a major problem, mostly he wanted to know my opinion on a gift”
Eddie’s face is mostly hidden but his whole body tenses up. He look up at him with wide eyes, “You- you know what it is?”
He nods, looking away to drive again. “Ya, it’s gorgeous. Your boy sure knows how to pick things out. Asked if you’d like it, told him it just screamed you. It’ll go nicely with everything you own.”
Eddie doesn’t say a word and Wayne just silently drives back towards their home, it’s nearly too late.
“So- you knew he was gonna give me something?”
“More like, ask ya something. But we can go with that too, if you’d want”
Wayne pulls up to their home shortly after saying that, turning the truck off to turn and watch Eddie. Watches as Eddie thinks about it, slowly his cheeks turn pink and into full blown red as the realization hits him. If he didn’t love this boy so much, he’d be laughing his ass off.
“Oh fuck, I- I’m an idiot”
Shaking his head, he settled a hand on Eddie’s knee, “nah, you ain’t an idiot. Just a little slow, Ed. Now come on, go inside sleep and tomorrow you and your boy can talk. Yeah?”
Eddie only nods before getting out and making his way inside and Wayne just watches before following suit. As he walks past Eddie’s door he hears a soft conversation happening.
“I’m sorry, my beloved.”
“Why’re you sorry?”
“I’m an idiot, that’s why”
“Baby, Eds- no. Don’t say that, you really ar-“
“But I am! You, you were asking me to marry you and I stupidity thought you wanted Wayne to adopt you!”
Wayne shakes his head at that before making his way to his room, his job is done.
~~~~
The ring doesn’t make an appearance until nearly a week later.
Wayne can tell the boys are even closer now, that their communication skills have grown just a little bit better. His nephew is still a little slow sometimes but now they’re more clear in what they’re talking about and hardly interrupt each other during more serious conversations. Makes him proud to see it.
It’s during a family dinner when he spots the ring on his nephew’s finger. He smirks into his drink but doesn’t mention it, he also doesn’t mention anything when he spots Eddie’s ring on Steve’s ring finger.
He’s happy for his boys, and he can’t wait for the day they can actually get married. Because it will happen, they deserve it.
Annnnd that’s it!! I decided half way into writing the ending to end it within Wayne’s pov. It seemed fitting to me. I’d like to thank @i-less-than-three-you for the help with parts of this!! If it wasn’t for her, this fic actually wouldn’t be a thing lol.
Watching You Fall in Love (is My Greatest Achievement)
Steddie Fic | Wayne POV | Little_Annie | Ao3
---
"You love him don't you?" Wayne whispers, breathy, quiet, his voice cracking around the edges of something that feels like raw emotion.
It's then that Eddie turns his gaze away from Steve to look at him, the light never fading from his eyes and the smile never wiping from his face.
Steve's sitting on the trailer floor, in the middle of the living room, Eddie's clothes hanging from his body as he flips through one of Eddie's many monster manuals. Wayne knows the boy would never admit it, but he's just as interested in D&D as the other kids. He's helping Eddie plan his next campaign for christ sake.
Next to Wayne, two cans of coke in hand and a love struck smile on his face, Eddie nods, his cheeks darkening as his smile ever so slightly fades. "Is that okay?" He asks, looking all the bit nervous as his eyes roam Wayne's face.
"More than okay Son."
Eddie's smile brightens once again and if Wayne notices the small amount of tears welling in his eyes, he says nothing about.
"You ever going to tell him?" Wayne continues, nodding in Steve's direction, the boy still oblivious to the conversation being whispered behind his back.
"I don't know if I can."
Wayne says nothing to Eddie's reply as he watches the boy return to the living room where he sits down next to his best friend. Steve smiling bright as the sun upon Eddie's return.
Months go by and Wayne gets to watch as Steve falls too. It's there and so obvious to anyone but Eddie.
His eyes linger and his smile never fades. Soon Wayne sees as he sits a little closer and his cheeks grow a little darker.
There's moments when Wayne catches what he can only describe as a love struck expression across Steve's face. Eddie's talking, because when is he not, and Steve's there, eyes wide and locked onto Eddie's ever changing expression.
He looks fond. Fond in a way Wayne's never seen anyone look at his nephew.
There's moments when he sees Steve hesitant. Moments when he and Eddie are so close and Steve's hand twitches like it wants to reach out. Moments when Steve looks like he wants to lean in but bites his lip and turns away with rosy cheeks.
It's nearly a year into their friendship when Steve's standing at Wayne's side and whispers, "I think I love him."
"Tell him," Wayne answers easily, leaving out the 'please' he so desperately wants to tack onto the end of that sentence.
Please, he thinks again as he watches Eddie turn to face them from across the yard, a smile so beautiful Wayne thinks it's the first time he's seen it on Eddie's face. The boy's elbow deep in his van as his cheeks grow a little pinker as he says with a smile, "Stevie come here for a sec."
Steve leaves, but not before whispering back to Wayne, "I think I will."
No more than a week later Wayne comes home to find the boys on the couch, Steve sleeping and curled into Eddie's side, snoring with his nose pressed to Eddie's neck.
Wayne offers his boy a smile as he stirs from the sound of the door closing. He looks tired, arms tightening around Steve's waist as he smiles back and burrows closer, kissing the top of Steve's head before drifting back off.
"He loves me," Eddie says one evening, weeks down the road, a rare occasion when Steve isn't over and Eddie's actually home.
Wayne smiles, his heart so warm and full as he says, "I know."
Steve's been over for a few weeks now. Part of Wayne's convinced he's moved in, what with the new additions to their fridge and bathroom vanity. The idea doesn't upset him in the least.
He's gotten to witness their love grow during that time anyway.
He's gotten to witness the way Steve kisses a grumpy Eddie good morning until he finally smiles.
Or the way Eddie lights up when Steve's arms wrap around his waist and he whispers an "I love you Eds," that Wayne isn't sure if he's supposed to hear.
Or the way they giggle and kiss and love one another in such a beautiful and uninhibited way.
Granted too, sometimes that means Wayne's hears a bit too much. Eddie would be mortified to know there's been far too many occasions in which Wayne's had to leave the trailer to escape the gasping breaths that occasionally pour out from under his bedroom door.
Though this time, Wayne's inside as the boys are on the roof smoking and he thanks the lord above that all he can hear are the faintest of whispers.
There's only parts of the conversation that he catches, but his heart swells when he hears Eddie's voice so clearly say, "I'm gonna marry you someday Steve Harrington."
Wayne cries the day Eddie shows him the ring.
And cries even harder when Steve shows him his.
Steve's hand is shaking where the single golden band lies on his ring finger, Eddie standing directly behind him, arm around his waist with a smile that matches Steve's in the way it resembles Sunshine.
They can't marry, not legally anyways. But that doesn't stop Jim Hopper from officiating a ceremony or Joyce Byers from walking Steve down the aisle.
The backyard to Hoppers cabin is filled with faces Wayne has grown familiar with over the years. Young and old, smiling and crying all the same.
Dustin and Robin both write speeches, both as rambling and as funny as they are beautifully heart wrenching.
There's not a dry eye in the house.
The boys move into an apartment where they build a life together.
Wayne visits often for meals or a cup of coffee in the mornings, still delighting in the way his Eddie seems so wonderfully overcome with love and affection.
He'd thought he'd shed enough tears for his lifetime at the wedding, but one evening, sat at the table with Robin Buckley and his boys, Wayne finds out he's gonna be a grandpa.
Elaine Birdie Munson is her name.
Sunshine, they call her instead.
Hi there! I've had this idea stuck in my head for a while and I'd rather read it than write it lol -though I might write something myself eventually-
Reader strongly disliking physical touch from everyone but Steve, and him being completely oblivious to it. The rest of the friend group pointing it out and him refusing to believe them, so the whole lot decide to prove him wrong with some sort of masterplan. (Idiots in love am I right)
What do you think? Hope you have a great day xxx
The Only Exception || Steve Harrington x female!reader
Summary: Physical touch was something you despised, but as always, Steve’s touch was the only exception. When he refuses to believe that you actually hate the whole concept of it, the kids come up with a plan to prove him wrong.
Word Count: 2.3k
Warnings: fluff, a tiny bit of angst, reader dislikes physical touch
A/N: I’m sorry it took so long for me to write it. It was difficult because I’m the complete opposite (big fan of physical touch), but I tried my best to implement it in the story. I hope you like it! Also, this is not based on the Paramore song “The Only Exception”, I just thought that the title would fit this story lmao
Tumblr media
The warm and bright rays of sunshine slip through the curtains, shining directly on your face and awakening you from your unconscious state. You squeeze your eyes shut and turn to face the other side. A hand comes up to your face, its thumb caressing your cheek slowly. You open your eyes and are met with Steve’s sleepy gaze.
“Hey,” he whispers as he gives you a small smile.
“G’morning,” you murmur as you put your arms around his waist and hug him close. “How long have you been up for?”
“Not long, I was just waiting for you to wake up,” he says nuzzling against your neck. He leaves a trail of soft kisses all the way from your jaw to your collarbone.
“I missed you last night,” he continues.
“I’m sorry, I had to stay later than planned because this customer would just not shut up,” you groan as you remember the encounter. He pulls back to meet his gaze with yours.
“I mean, he just kept going on and on about how his son was going off the rails with this so-called ‘satanic’ D&D game, saying that he was worried he would turn out to be a cult member,” rubbing the sleep from your eyes and then raising your arms above your head to stretch.
“All I did was ask how he was doing, which is obviously a question that is asked clearly out of courtesy. I’m just a retail worker working minimum wage, not a therapist,” you scoff and roll your eyes in frustration.
He looks at you with an amused expression. He loved that you felt comfortable enough to rant about your feelings, knowing full well that you had trouble doing so with most people. But he also found it entertaining because of the way you told your stories.
“Don’t worry about it, dove. I’m just glad to wake up next to you,” he says, voice still raspy from sleep. He pulls you back into a hug and you close your eyes, letting the warmth from his touch embrace you like the world’s most comfortable blanket.
In the two months you and Steve had been dating, neither of you had discussed your love languages. He assumed yours was physical touch since you always welcomed his touch eagerly. Because of this, he never had a reason to think otherwise. But in reality, you were never one to favor physical closeness. Your childhood lacked the expression of love through touch because your parents were never affectionate with you, or with each other for that matter.
Before Steve, any kind of physical closeness would make you uncomfortable. However, having him that close would not only make you happy but calm. His hugs and kisses were like a breath of fresh air. It was something new and exciting, yet calming when you were stressed or low-spirited. Despite loving having him that close, his touch was the only one you tolerated. You, of course, were certain that his love language was physical touch; it was as clear as day and everyone knew it.
“Come on, let’s go get some breakfast so we can help set up for Dustin’s birthday party,” you say as you let go of Steve and sit up into a cross-legged position. He throws his arm over his face and sighs.
“Alright, just give me five more minutes of sleep and then I’ll get up to shower,” he mumbles into his arm.
“Five minutes will turn into ten, ten will turn into twenty, and next thing you know we’ll be an hour late, Steve”
“Fine,” he groans, “I’m getting up now.”
Your mouth quirks up at the corners with contentment. You love living with Steve. Moments of simple domestic bliss are your favorite, especially ones like these. Mornings with him are so soft. It is when you would let your guard down, allowing yourself to be who you really are, and it’s the same way for him. Uncrossing your legs, you give him a kiss on the forehead and get up from the bed. The two of you need to be at the Wheeler’s place soon to set up for the party, and if there’s one thing you dislike more than anything is being late.
“Stevie, you better be in the shower by the time I come back!” you shout as you head to the kitchen to make breakfast for the two of you. As much as you love Steve, mornings, when you had somewhere else to be, were not easy.
“Happy birthday, Henderson,” Steve smiles as he embraces Dustin in a tight hug. The setup for the party had been pretty easy. All of the kids had offered to help make their friend’s birthday a special one, especially after everything that happened with the Upside Down.
“Thanks, man,” Dustin responds.
“You know, it would’ve been a hell of a lot easier if you had told us what you wanted as a present instead of having us guess,” Steve says while rolling his eyes.
 Although he loved the kid, he hated trying to find a present that would be perfect to Dustin’s liking. It was incredibly stressful to him because he wanted it to be perfect. He wanted him to have a present that he would actually enjoy, something that Steve hadn’t experienced in his childhood as a result of his parent’s emotional negligence. Sure, they always provided him with anything he needed, but they never bothered to give him the attention and affection all childrens need. Every year, his parents would always give him money to buy whatever he wanted, even as a child. The thought that goes into buying a loved one something they want is much better than an envelope with a hundred bucks and a half-hearted congratulations.
“I’m sure I’ll love whatever you got me. Plus, where’s the fun in just telling you?”
“Yeah, yeah. Whatever, dude. It better be something you like, otherwise I’m making you bike to return it for something you actually like. I’m not wasting gas on that,” he grumbles. You give him a knowing smile, after all, you know him well enough to know that he was all bark and no bite. At least not when it came to the people he loved. It seemed like Dustin knew it too because he just chuckles at his remark.
“Happy birthday, Dustin,” you smile as you hand the young teen a blue envelope that contains a birthday card.
“Thanks, y/n!” he says much more enthusiastically. Suddenly, he wraps his arms around you, with your own pinned against your side. You become still as a statue, not knowing how to respond to his touch. Not wanting to hurt his feelings, you bring your right hand up to his back and give him a quick pat. He seems to get the hint because he drops his arms and gives you a slight smile.
“Steve, could you help me carry one of my new inventions? It’s in the garage and it’s just too heavy for me to carry it,” Dustin says.
“Sure, sure,” Steve responds. “Are you sure you’ll be okay on your own?” he says as he turns to you.
“I’m sure. I’ll go ask Mrs. Henderson if she needs help with anything,” you smile reassuringly.
“Alright,” he says, giving you a small peck on the cheek before turning on his heel to follow Dustin.
Dustin opens the door to the garage, finding the rest of his friends sitting on the floor playing a boardgame.
“What are you guys doing here?” Steve questions.
“Dustin’s mom got mad at us for yelling while playing the game. She told us to either tone it down or come to the garage. So, we decided to come here instead,” Lucas shrugs. “What are you doing here? I thought you would be hanging out with the others,” he adds. Steve assumes that by the others he means Robin, Jonathan, Nancy, and you.
“I was, but Henderson over here wanted me to help him carry something that was apparently too heavy for him. Which is bullshit because I know for a fact he would rather struggle to carry something than ask for my help.”
With that, he turns to look at Dustin. “So what’s going on, dude?” he questions, brow arched in suspicion.
“When were you going to tell me that y/n hates hugs?” Dustin asks.
“What are you talking about? She loves hugs,” he says, surprise crossing his face.
“You know damn well what I’m talking about. It sure would’ve been better if you had told me before I hugged her today.”
Steve shoots him a quizzical look and asks, “I seriously have no clue what you’re talking about.”
“Everytime we hug her she either awkwardly stands very still with her arms pinned to her sides or just dodges the gesture altogether,” Max joins in, “I thought you knew that already.”
“You guys have no idea what you’re talking about,” Steve says.
“It’s true, last week when she helped me with my History homework, I tried to give her a hug but she just stook out her hand for a handshake instead,” Will reveals.
“And a few minutes ago she just stood very still and gave me a pat on the back while I gave her a hug,” Dustin adds.
“I think I would know if my girlfriend disliked physical touch,” Steve insists.
“You think we’re making it up? Fine, we’ll prove you wrong, Dingus,” Dustin fires back. He goes up to Mike and whispers something in his ear. Mike nods and turns to whisper the same thing in El’s ear.
“Let’s go,” Dustin says. The rest of the kids follow him, Steve trailing right behind them. They head to the living room, where you’re sitting on the couch reading your book.
“Hey, y/n,” Dustin greets you. You look from your novel, and smile at the kids.
“Hey,” you answer back.
“We just wanted to thank you for everything you have done for us. I mean, from helping us out with our English and History homework, to giving us rides to the arcade and helping decorate for my birthday party,” he continues.
“Yeah, and thanks for the relationship advice you gave us earlier this week,” Mike comments as he glances at El.
“There’s no need to thank me, I’m happy to help out however I can,” giving them a gentle smile.
“Can I give you a hug?” El asks shyly.
“Oh, uh, sure,” you mutter. You step forward in her direction and wrap your left arm around her shoulders for a brief second. When you step back, you give her a tight smile and put your hands in the pockets of your jacket.
“Are you okay, y/n?” Lucas asks.
“Of course,” you reply.
“Did I do something wrong? Was my hug that bad?” El asks you, a frown forming on her face.
“What? No, not at all. You’re a great hugger El” you quickly say.
“Or do you just don’t like us? Is that why you hate our hugs?” Dustin inquires, brows furrowed in worry.
“It’s not you guys, I promise. I’m just not that fond of physical touch,” you admit, an apologetic look on your face.
“What? All this time you’ve hated it and you couldn’t even tell me?” Steve asks, a hurtful look crossing his face.
“We’ll leave you two to talk,” Dustin says quietly. They all glance at each other in confusion, but Dustin nods towards the hallway that leads back to the garage. They exit the room, leaving the two of you in awkward silence.
“Does that mean that you’ve hated all of the kisses and hugs I’ve been giving you this entire time?” Steve asks, eyebrows lowered and pulled together.
You close the space that separates the two of you and bring your hands up to his face to softly cup his cheek.
 “Baby, I’ve loved every single kiss and hug you have given me so far. Look, I know we’ve never discussed this, but physical touch doesn’t come easy to me. I mean, the kids just proved it,” you laugh humorlessly.
“My parents were never affectionate with me, so anything that involves touching other people makes me uncomfortable. I never thought that it would change, but then you came along and became my only exception,” you continue, “Trust me when I say that nothing makes me happier than feeling you close to me.”
“But why didn’t you say anything, dove?” he asks softly, tilting up your chin and cupping both of your cheeks. You take your hands off his face and hold his wrists instead, as if to keep his hands in place.
“It never came up. Plus, I didn’t want you to think that I hated your touch,” you answer in the same tone.
“I’m sorry for not saying anything,” you add.
“And I’m sorry for not noticing it sooner,” he responds.
“I guess we’re just two idiots in love, huh? Too blinded to see the obvious,” he chuckles.
“I guess we are,” you chuckle as well, standing on your toes to meet your lips with his.
Never Say Never
Chapter 16
Pairing: SingleDad!StevexReader
Summary: You are a 32 year old single mother, raising your seven year old son on your own. After being widowed at 30 and going out on awful dates with disgusting men for the past month, you have decided that you're giving up. You already had your great love. One person can't possibly get lucky enough to have two in their lifetime. But then your son starts playing baseball and the coach might just change your mind about that.
Two weeks later found you at the baseball diamond for the boys first game of the season. Your group took up an entire section of the bleachers, everyone had showed up to cheer the kids on. You were squeezed between Robin and Janice, Matt on Janice’s other side. In front of you were Dustin, Lucas, Max, Nancy, and Jonathan. Behind you was El, Mike, Will, Nolan, Joyce, Karen, and Hopper. Jeremiah had a literal cheering section that was there for him and it hit you that now, so did Eli. Somehow, the two of you were not only lucky enough to get Steve, but also the entire family that came along with him.
You caught sight of Judith out of the corner of your eye, walking up, looking more out of place than a string quartet at a toddler’s birthday party. Who showed up to a baseball game in heels and a pantsuit? Judith did. You fought the urge to roll your eyes or hide. Judith’s eyes darted over the bleachers, looking for you, wincing at the raucous ruckus the dad she was standing next to was making as he loudly bragged about his son.
“Uh-oh…the she-beast has arrived,” muttered Janice, nodding in your mother-in-law’s direction.
“I saw,” you sighed, rising to your feet, waving your hand to make it easier for Judith to find you. There would be no hiding. Sometimes being the responsible adult sucked.
Judith somehow managed to look both annoyed and relieved at the sight of you. Sending one last scathing look toward the oblivious father, she made her way to your section of the bleachers.
“Judith!” exclaimed Karen, climbing carefully down, opening her arms in welcome. “You’re Eli’s grandmother. I’m Jeremiah’s grandmother. And so is Joyce.” She pointed to the petite woman who was currently holding onto Jonathan’s head to step down.
“So you’re Steve’s mom or are you Steve’s mom?” questioned Judith, her eyes roaming over the two, judgement evident in her eyes. You didn’t have to try too hard to imagine what she must be thinking. Joyce standing there in her baggy jeans and oversized sweatshirt and Karen all done up with bright makeup and a dress that, gasp, stopped above her knees and even showed some cleavage. Oh, the horror.
Karen laughed, her hand coming to her breast, Judith’s eyes about popping out of her head at the amount of bosom on display. Because heaven forbid a woman had the audacity to dress however she wanted, to be proud of her own body. And honestly, Karen had every right to show off. The woman was stunning.
“Oh no. Neither of us are. Steve’s parents aren’t really in the picture sadly. I’m Nancy’s mom.” She turned, pointing to the petite brunette who waved with a smile. “Nancy is Jeremiah’s mom.”
“And I’m actually Jonathan’s mom,” Joyce explained, pointing to her son who simply lifted his hand. “He’s Jeremiah’s stepdad but I’ve known Steve since he was just a young kid in high school and he’s practically a son to me. So it feels like I’m his mom, too.”
“Yeah, and I’ve known him just as long because him and Nance met in high school so he kind of feels like a son to me too. The poor boy went from having no mom to multiple moms who are always in his business whether he wants us there or not.”
Joyce shrugged, “Honestly, everyone here is family. Everyone you see behind you are Jere’s aunts and uncles.” They all waved, Dustin and Max a bit more obnoxiously than the rest. “Well, except for Hop. He’s my husband. So I guess he’s kind of like Steve’s dad for all intents and purposes.”
Hopper snorted and then shrugged, “I’ll guess I’ll claim Harrington if I have to.”
“How…unconventional of all of you,” Judith managed, her teeth gritted in a tight smile.
Your eyes slipped closed in frustration. Of course this woman had to show up and ruin what was looking to be a perfect day. She couldn’t fathom something like found family. She believed blood came before everything else. The very idea that all of these people could come together and be more important to each other than the family genetics had stuck them with was inconceivable for a brain like hers.
“Well, come on up,” Karen invited, giving her a wave. “We can all scooch and make room for you with the grandparents.”
“Oh, that’s alright. There will be no need for any…scooching. I’ll just…” Her eyes quickly scanned the bleachers. “I’ll sit right here. I’ll be fine.” Before anyone could argue with her, she dropped down in front of Max who turned, giving you a, can you believe this woman, look.
You rolled her eyes, letting Max silently know you could not believe her but honestly, you could. You'd learned to expect nothing less than constant judgement and absolute disdain from that woman. No one was ever good enough in her eyes. Judith raised her bar so high that no one, who wasn’t Justin, could ever manage to leap over it. And even he’d struggled to make that jump sometimes.
You zoned out as the boys began talking about their latest D&D campaign in front of you, your eyes drawn to the sight of Steve out on the field with the team. He stood, surrounded by boys in baseball pants and white shirts with green stripes. And god he looked good, fitted jeans that showed off the muscles in his strong thighs, a moss green short sleeved shirt, his rounded biceps peeking out from the hem as he leaned forward, hands on his knees to talk to the kids. A baseball cap sat on his head and she didn’t know what it was but you loved him in a ballcap, all those beautiful locks spilling out from underneath.
It was difficult to wrap your head around the fact that it had only been two weeks since you'd both been brave to utter those three little words, three little words with an impact big enough to change the trajectory of your lives. Two weeks of you feeling like you were walking on air, like nothing could possibly go wrong, floating in your own little bubble of bliss. It felt like so much longer. You couldn’t even remember what your life had been like before Steve had become a part of it, the endless days of just trying to make it through, and you didn’t want to.
The two of you had spent nearly every night together since that moment on the beach, much to the boy’s excitement. Not sleeping over, that was still something you were trying to move slowly with for the boys’ sake, particularly Eli. Steve had been incredibly understanding about you wanting to wait a bit before you took that step. But almost every evening the four of you ate dinner together, sometimes at your house, sometimes at his. You played board games, watched movies, went for a walk down to the local ice cream place or rode your bikes over to the park for the boys to play.
Steve had surprised you twice at work, showing up with lunch for the two of you. Dustin, Mike, Lucas, and Will had invited the boys over one night for D&D last week and Robin had offered to take them to a movie last night to allow Steve and you some alone time. It was incredible. You hadn’t just gained Steve but an entire village of people who just showed up and were there, ready to help at a moment’s notice, and you were so thankful for every single one of them. You'd never had anyone but Janice and Matt and having so many people who were willing to pitch in, who enjoyed your kid enough to want to spend time with him, well it meant more to you than you could possibly express to them.
Your attention on Steve broke with an elbow to your side. Looking over, you found Janice grinning wickedly at you, “What were you thinking about, huh?”
“Probably last night,” teased Robin. “I took the boys to a movie so she and Steve were all alone. Replaying the highlight reel of naked time in your mind?”
“Eww! Can we not?” Mike asked.
“Oh please.” Robin rolled her eyes. “Maybe I had to censor myself when you were thirteen but you’re twenty-six now. I think you can handle knowing how babies are made.”
“Babies? I didn’t know we were talking about babies.” El’s face lit up. “Are you going to have a baby? Oh, I miss babies. Jeremiah was such a cute little baby.”
“No one is talking about babies,” you replied, noticing how stiff Judith’s posture had suddenly gotten. She was only sitting a couple rows in front of you and there was no doubt she was listening to every word being spoken, stocking up ammunition for later. You did not need that woman to have one more reason to come at you. “Jeez. You guys are being ridiculous.”
“Not yet anyway,” teased Nancy, turning around. “But I heard the ‘l’ word has been spoken so you never know…”
“Oh my god!” Max shrieked, spinning completely around in her seat, Judith doing the same, her eyes shooting daggers at you. You braced yourself but Judith quickly spun back around as Max continued gushing. “Are you serious? You’re using the love word? I knew you were in love. You got all red faced at the coffee shop that night when the word was even mentioned.”
“When’s the wedding?” Lucas wiggled his eyebrows. “Because I look like a million bucks in a tux and the way Dustin is going, I might never get to be in another wedding if you two don’t tie the knot.”
“Hey! I will have you know that Heather and I are going on our third date tomorrow night,” Dustin stated, folding his arms.
“Ohhh…” Will crooned. “You convinced her to go out with you a third time? What’d you bribe her with? Oh, or is it blackmail? You got something juicy on her that she doesn’t want revealed?”
Dustin chucked a piece of popcorn at him and Will caught it in his mouth, grinning triumphantly as he chewed. Dustin shook his head in disgust.
“I don’t think Dustin needs bribery or blackmail. Heather has been talking about him nonstop at the office,” you told them, sending a wink Dustin’s way. “She really likes you. She said she had a blast at the Science Museum with you last week.”
“Oh yeah? I had a lot of fun too. What else has she said about me?”
“Hmm. Let me think,” you taunted, tapping your finger against your chin, relieved to be talking about someone that wasn’t you with Judith sitting and listening like a hawk. “That you’re adorable and funny. She thinks you have the best smile. She told me you’re one of the nicest guys she’s ever met and that you’re super smart. She says your big brain is one of the sexiest things about you.”
Mike, Lucas, and Will began gagging on cue, perfectly synced as if they’d rehearsed it first. Dustin glared at them all but you could see how pleased he was at the information you'd just relayed to him. And it was all true. You'd been teasing Heather all week about what a smitten little kitten she was. They were awfully cute together.
“And speaking of new romance,” you sang, bopping your elbow into Robin’s side. “How goes it with the lovely June?”
Robin’s face flushed a brilliant shade of scarlett. She grabbed onto a piece of her hair, toying with it, a coy smile lifting the corners of her mouth. Clearly Heather wasn’t the only smitten kitten around here.
“June?” came Judith’s voice loudly. “That’s a very strange name for a man.”
“Well, that would be because June is, in fact, a woman,” Dustin stated.
Judith made a sound like a throttled gasp, her eyes going wide, “A woman? So…you’re…one of those…?”
“One of what exactly?” challenged Max, leaning forward, elbows on her knees. “A human? A woman? An American? An Earthling? What exactlt are you asking, Judith?”
Your hands clenched at your sides, bracing yourself for an ugly scene. A scene that could destroy this beautiful thing that had been building around you. Why would any of them want you to be a part of their lives when that would mean this awful woman would be a part of it too? Judith’s mouth went tight at Max’s confrontation and you braced yourself, waiting for the nasty thing that was about to come out of her mouth.
But Judith simply stated, “Never mind. It’s none of my concern,” and turned back around. Huh. She must have realized she was outnumbered and didn’t like her odds.
“So anyway, back to the matter at hand,” Max said loudly, turning to Robin.
“Yes, we’re all dying to know,” Karen exclaimed, leaning into Robin. “Are there sparks?”
“I wouldn’t say sparks…” Robin began and when they all looked crestfallen, she grinned. “More like massive explosions that could level an entire city.” She giggled. “She’s amazing. I mean, we went to the movies and it was fun, but you can’t really talk much at the movies.”
Nolan snorted, “You? You talk through movies all the time.”
“With you guys,” she huffed. “But she doesn't even know me yet. Not really. I didn’t want to give her the full dose of how neurotic I am right out of the gate. I have to give her small doses until she’s just acclimated to it and doesn’t realize the extent of my craziness. Anyway, I thought that would be the end of it. You know? I told you guys it went well but I didn’t really expect anything to come of it. Then she called and asked if I wanted to go to dinner. So we went out Tuesday night again and we were sitting in the restaurant for six hours! Six hours! Can you believe it?”
“What in the hell do you do in a restaurant for six hours?” Hopper huffed. “I mean, after you eat what else is there?” Joyce swatted him and he looked over at her, bewildered. “What?”
“Just because you have no conversational skills doesn’t mean others don’t. They were obviously talking.”
“I have conversational skills. I am very eloquent with my words, thank you very much.” He grinned when you all laughed because nothing about this bear of a man screamed eloquent. “But six hours? What could you possibly have to talk about for six hours?”
“Everything,” Robin sighed dreamily. “She was asking me all kinds of questions and she didn’t even seem to mind when I rambled. She said she thought it was cute! Can you believe it? And I learned so much about her. She loves cats. She has two of them, Hoggle and Ludo.”
“What kinds of names are those?” Judith piped up and you fought the urge to throw one of your M&Ms at the back of her head. Hadn’t the woman said enough already? Why couldn’t she just shut up?
“She’s a Labyrinth fan!” you squealed, choosing to ignore your mother-in-law completely instead. “Great taste in movies.”
“Yes! And music…she loves Blondie, Bowie, the Beatles…”
“All solid choices,” Joyce replied.
“I don’t know,” Hopper mused. “I didn’t hear any Zeppelin or Stones mentioned.”
“You’re showing your age, Hop,” Will teased.
“The game is starting,” Judith interrupted loudly. “So maybe the inappropriate talk about love lives could finish now.”
“Damn, she’s really not any fun is she?” Robin hissed in your ear.
“You have no idea,” you mumbled back with a groan. You had to keep reminding yourself that Judith was Eli’s grandmother. No matter how frustrating she was, you were going to have to deal with her but only as much as absolutely necessary. Hopefully she would just head home after the game and save you all from her unwanted presence any longer.
The game went far better than you had expected for it being the boys’ first time. Eli actually managed to hit the ball and made it all the way to third before the other team’s player managed to throw it in. Matt may have cheered the loudest, jumping out of his seat, proud of the kid he’d spent so much time in the batting cages with.
Matt’s cheering had not come as a surprise but the way the rest of them all cheered for your son did. It wasn’t just a casual, yay Eli, an obligatory cheer because their friend was dating the kid’s mom. They seemed genuinely excited, celebrating his moments of glory just as loudly and proudly as they did Jeremiah’s. When Jeremiah ran into home, breaking the tie and winning the game, you leapt from your seat, you and Nancy high fiving and hugging, two moms sharing your pride in your boys.
Both boys came racing off the field, their cheeks bright red, flushed from both the excitement and the exertion. They were swept up in a flurry of hugs and high fives from the crowd of people who had shown up just for them.
“You boys were amazing!” Hopper yelled, pulling both boys in for a bear hug. Yeah, you could definitely see where Dustin got Smokey the Bear from this guy.
“Did you see me slide right into home, grandpa? I saw that kid grab it but I just knew I had time! Daddy says to take chances!” Jeremiah beamed, the smile on his face so wide it looked painful.
“I saw it, kid. You did real good. You took the chance and it paid off. You’re going to be the next Barry Bonds, just watch. And you!” He turned his attention to Eli, his massive hand ruffling her son’s hair. “That was a hell of a hit, kid. Making it all the way to third before they could get it. You gave them a run for their money. They were scrambling after that ball.”
Eli looked so proud that your heart could burst. Judith stepped forward. She’d been keeping to the outside of the group, clearly uncomfortable, uncertain how to make herself known. You had no doubt it was killing her to see Eli receiving so much positive attention from so many people that were not her. To see that he had other people in his life that were important to him, to not be the first person that had congratulated him on his game.
Just as she stepped forward and Eli spotted her, running into her arms for a hug, Steve was making his way over from the diamond, a large bag slung over his shoulder. When his eyes found yours, he gave you one of those smiles that came with a side of a very flirty wink that he seemed to reserve just for you.
“Good game, huh?” he commented, a quick kiss planted on your lips. “The boys did a great job.”
“That’s because they have a great coach,” you replied, your arms slipping around his stomach, smiling up at this man who always had you in a state of complete awe.
“Everybody still up for burgers and shakes at Benny’s?” Hopper boomed out over the cacophony of noise.
You glanced over to Judith who was purposefully keeping her eyes off of you and Steve. You really didn’t want to invite her but it would be the right thing to do. She’d driven all this way for the game.
“Judith, would you like to join us?” you asked, keeping your arms firmly locked around Steve because who cared what Judith thought. You had made it clear to her that this new future with Steve did not erase your past with Justin. The woman was just going to have to get used to it.
“Oh. I…no, I don’t think so.” She shook her head. “Henry is supposed to be getting back this evening and he’ll need dinner.” She looked around to the others, feeling the need to explain, “Work trip.”
Yeah. Henry had an awful lot of work trips. Justin had confided in you that he wasn’t so sure they were all for work but he could never prove it. And Judith chose to go through life blissfully unaware. As far as you knew, you'd never confronted him or questioned him. But the two of them had never exactly been the warm and fuzzy couple. There weren’t those moments of tender touches or warm glances ever. Their relationship seemed more like a business transaction, something that was mutually beneficial to them both.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah grandma. Benny’s has the best shakes!”
Jeremiah nodded his agreement. “Eli and I both love strawberry! And Benny always brings me ranch to dip my fries in.”
“Oh, that’s nice.” Judith smiled down at the boy, seeming surprised that he was taking the time to talk to her. She jumped when Joyce came up next to her, placing an arm around her shoulders.
“Come on Judes.” You brought your hand to your mouth to cover the snort that had slipped out at Joyce’s choice of nickname. Robin clearly found it just as amusing as she shoved her face into El’s shoulder, her body shaking with laughter. “It’ll be fun. And if these two crazy kids are going to be doing the family thing, then that means we all need to do the family thing, right?”
“Yeah, Judes,” Max agreed, grinning as if this were the best moment of her life. “We’re all one big happy family now. We all love Eli and he loves us. Right, kid?”
Eli leapt from the ground as he proudly exclaimed, “Yeah!” He turned to Judith. “Dustin and Mike and Will and Lucas all play this really cool game called Dungeons and Dragons and they’re teaching me all about it. And Robin took us to see this movie, First Kid. It’s about this kid who is the president’s son and he has a bodyguard. It’s so funny and she got us popcorn and Skittles because she says Skittles are the superior candy. And Max is teaching me how to skateboard! I fell off a couple times but I’m starting to get the hang of it. She says I’ll be a pro by the end of summer. And El came over and helped us make slime when we spent the night with Nancy and Jonathan. They let us stay up until midnight and we got to do s’mores over the fire in their backyard. It was so cool. And Hopper let us ride in his police car! He even turned on the lights and the siren for us and he brought us one of those pads to do fingerprints! And Joyce makes the best spaghetti. We went to her house for dinner and Will is an artist and he showed us all these cool things he drew when he was just our age!”
Judith looked a bit taken aback as Eli kept rambling, caught off guard at how large a part of his life each of these people were now. You almost felt sorry for her, the sadness in her eyes, knowing how she wished she was closer so she could be a bigger part of Eli’s life. Almost but not quite because the woman was her own worst enemy.
“I don’t know. Henry…”
“Is a grown man who can fend for himself,” you reminded her. “He’s fifty-six Judith. The man should know how to at least make a sandwich.”
Judith’s hands wrung together, an internal battle playing over her face. Damn. Was she really that programmed by that man or was her uncertainty coming from all the new people, the fact that she would be the one outside looking in instead of at the center of it all?
“Come on. It will be fun,” Karen urged. “My husband, Tedd, isn't here either. We’ll be two crazy ladies without their husbands. I mean, who needs them anyway, right?”
Judith laughed, her hand flying to her mouth, eyes going wide as if she couldn’t believe she’d just done that. You pressed your lips together in amusement. So there was a woman desperate for fun in there just waiting to break free. You could see it in the sparkle of those ocean blue eyes, so much like her son’s.
“Are you sure you want me to come?” she asked, the question directed at you.
You smiled, stepping forward, placing your arm around Judith’s shoulders, “Of course I do.”
Maybe this could work out after all. Maybe Judith wasn’t as awful as she seemed. Perhaps all that bluster and rudeness came from a place of deep fear. Fear not that her son would be forgotten, but that she would. Fear that you would move on and in turn, so would Eli, and she would be left with nothing after losing her only child besides a husband that was more boring than watching paint dry. Perhaps all of this had simply been because no one but Justin had ever really thought she mattered.
Judith’s mouth lifted at the corners, her entire demeanor changing with that subtle smile. It made her appear far more approachable and soft. She nodded.
“Okay. I haven’t had a milkshake in years. Do they have malts? Oh, malts were my favorite.”
“Mine too!” Hopper bellowed. “And you won’t find a better malt than Benny’s. Come on. You can ride with us old folks.” He pulled his keys from his pocket.
“Oh! That's quite alright. I don’t want to inconvenience you. Then you would have to bring me back here. I have my own car if you just want to tell me how to get there.”
“Nonsense!” Joyce looped her arm in Judith’s, tossing you a wink. “You are not an inconvenience. Us grandmas have to stick together. Come on. We’ll let the young ones be. We’ll have plenty of time to tell you all sorts of juicy stories about Steve this way.”
Steve groaned, his head rolling around his shoulders, “Or not!”
“You’ll love this one, Judith,” Karen laughed, taking her other arm as they led her toward the parking lot. “One time I found Steve climbing up the trellis of our house to sneak and see Nancy…”
“Great,” muttered Steve as their words faded, shaking his head. “Your mother-in-law is never going to like me once those three fill her head with every screw up I’ve ever made.”
“It doesn’t matter if she likes you,” you reminded him, rising up to your tiptoes to press your lips to his. “Because I do.”
“Besides, she’ll figure out for herself what a dingus you are before too long,” Robin snorted, yelping when Steve shoved her backward.
“So, how do you think this is going to go?” asked Janice who had always chosen to keep her distance. After one meeting with Judith, Janice preferred to not deal with her at all if she could, always saying she was going to open her mouth and piss the woman off if she said one more negative thing about you in front of her.
“With Judith…who knows…”
___________________________________________________________
But it went far better than Steve could have possibly imagined. He’d pictured Judith sitting there stiffly, staring them all down as she judged every single word they said. Or possibly offending every single person at the table with her words at some point. Or announcing to the entire table why Steve shouldn’t be with you. However, none of that happened.
Sitting between Karen and Joyce, the woman had loosened. As if the two others had slowly unraveled the strings that had been knotting her up for years and she could finally breathe. She smiled. She even laughed. And even though he’d only known her a very short time, it had even shocked him to see. He hadn’t been sure the woman was capable of frivolity of any kind. Forget actually enjoying anything.
And the best part of it was that you seemed to finally be relaxed. You sat at the other end of the table, Steve on one side of you and Janice on the other, keeping your distance from Judith. But every now and then you would look down at the woman and smile. Your two worlds were coming together and it wasn’t the horrendous clash you’d expected. They were actually appearing to meld quite seamlessly.
By the time dinner was over, everyone was heading out full and in good spirits. Judith had even smiled politely when Robin asked if Steve and you would want to double date with her and June soon. She swallowed down any bullshit bias she had. If she was going to be ignorant, at least she was following the golden rule and keeping her damn mouth shut if she had nothing nice to say.
After saying your goodbyes, Steve drove you and the boys back to his house. You fed Miles while Steve headed out back to get a fire going. The boys raced upstairs to play on the Nintendo 64 for a while. You stepped onto the back deck, sliding the door shut after Miles raced out behind her, instantly doing zoomies throughout the yard.
God, you were pretty. Even weeks after meeting, he still found himself in awe of you. Jeans that wrapped around each and every curve in a way that had his hands twitching at his sides, wanting to follow those familiar hills and valleys. You hated shoes and socks, lost them as soon as you could, something he’d learned about you over the past weeks, so bare pink toes peeked out from beneath the flared denim. The Bowie shirt you wore was cropped, a sliver of your soft stomach exposed. Your hair was up in a high ponytail, only accentuating your neck which was just calling to his mouth.
You tilted your head, those perfectly pink cotton candy lips pursing in a way that had him thinking so many thoughts that were not anywhere near the ballpark of holy. You were the most beautiful creature he had ever seen and he fought the urge to pinch himself, to prove these last weeks weren’t some fever dream that he was going to wake from.
“See something you like?” Your tone was light, playful, as he slowly made his way up onto the deck until he stood right in front of you.
“I most certainly do.” Fingers gripped your hips, tugging you into him until you could feel just how much he liked what he was seeing. “You have no idea the effect you have on me.”
“Oh, I think I have a pretty good idea right now,” you chuckled, hands tracing over his chest and shoulders to loop around his neck. “But sadly for you, there are children afoot so there is not much I can do about that at the moment.”
“You simply existing does it for me. You don’t have to do anything but appear, honey. That’s it. You laugh. You smile. You cross your legs. You tuck a strand of hair behind your ear. You take a sip of coffee. It all does it for me.”
“Yeah? Well, same for me. I swear I dreamed you into existence, Steve Harrington. I didn’t believe guys like you existed. I thought they were meant for storybooks and movies.”
Heat rushed over his cheeks at your compliment. “I’m no fairytale prince, honey but I promise to try to give you a happily ever after.”
Your teeth pulled at your bottom lip, your eyes widening just slightly at his words and he was doubting himself all over again. Should he not have said that? Was that pushy? But hadn’t you said forever? Hadn’t you said it just a couple weeks ago? That if you both were all in then you had to be planning on forever?
“Happily ever after? That sounds nice,” you murmured, pulling him in until your lips met, all his doubt vanishing like vapor on the air with your words.
His arms wound around you, lifting you up onto your toes, crushing your bodies together. You moaned softly, the sound swallowed by his lips, and his jeans felt painfully tight. You tasted just as sweet as you looked, chocolate milkshake met with cherry lip balm, a combination that had his head spinning.
Everything else ceased to exist for him when your lips were on his. Your tongue parted his lips, slipping along his own, and he couldn’t have told you what color the sky was or what month of the year it was. There was only you and him, locked in this moment that he wanted to make last until eternity. If this was how he would spend the rest of his days on this Earth, he could be okay with that.
But you did manage to think, pulling back, your lips now slick, curved into the prettiest smile, your eyes heavy with the desire that was racing under his skin. He wanted you. He always wanted you and with the boys, he never had you nearly enough. But the boys were right upstairs and he knew you couldn’t risk it. Those kids could be down and out the door before they even heard a sound.
“Thank you.”
“For what?” he asked, your questioning barreling through his brain fog. “You don’t have to thank me. I’ll kiss you anytime you want.”
“No,” you chuckled, swatting at him. “Thank you for today, for dealing with Judith. I know she’s…difficult. But I don’t know. She seemed a little different today. I have hope. It's a very small hope but hope that maybe she’s coming around. But I know she wasn’t very nice to you and the fact that you are willing to put up with her…I’m just really grateful because you don’t have to, you know.”
“Of course I do.” Steve slid his hand down your arm, locking your fingers together. He led you to the lounger, sitting and pulling you down in his lap. His nose traced your jaw, nuzzled into your hair. “She’s a part of your life and she’s a part of Eli’s life. If I want to be a part of your life then that means she’s part of mine too.”
“That’s…very kind of you.”
“No. It’s not.” He took your chin between his thumb and forefinger, turning your face to his. “Look. When I said I was all in, I meant it. I don’t get to be all in and then pick and choose what I am willing to handle. Anything that comes your way comes my way now too. Anything that’s heavy for you, you got me to help you carry it. Anything that’s hurting you, I will step in front of. That’s the deal. It’s not just you anymore. It’s us. We’re a team.”
“Okay coach,” you beamed, teasing but your eyes betrayed your lighthearted tone, shimmering with emotion at his words.
Wasn’t that what a relationship was supposed to be? Two people against the world? He loved this woman. He wanted to be in your life. He wanted to crawl inside your skin and live there the way you did in his. You had managed to slither your way inside. You were in the blood that ran through his veins, in every single beat of his heart, in the very cells that made up his skin.
Yeah. You came with baggage but who didn't? And he was more than willing to help you carry that load because you were more than worth it. You were everything he hadn’t even known he’d been searching for. He’d looked for so long, in all the wrong places, never knowing that the one that would finally fill in all those hollow places inside him already existed in the same town as him.
Maybe it was wrong, maybe it was an awful thing to think, but it felt like fate had brought you together. He was so sorry that your husband had died but maybe this was the course your lives had to take for you to find one another. He’d thought about what if he’d been first. What if he’d stumbled across you when you were out with your friends thirteen years ago? It had made him feel like an absolute piece of shit, but he couldn’t help but wonder what life would be like if he’d been the one.
But then there would be no Jeremiah. There would be no Eli. You wouldn’t have known the love she already had with your husband. He wouldn’t have gotten the thump on his head that he needed for him to see you, truly see you, to understand how lucky he was to have you. Maybe the two of you had to go through all that heartache and disappointment to come to this place, where you could truly appreciate what you had. So you would never take it for granted, never throw it away, or treat it carelessly.
So yeah. Maybe Steve hadn’t been your first but he had every intention of being your last. Your last boyfriend, your last love, your last kiss, your last everything. Because he’d chosen wrong so many times before, yes, but he hadn’t this time. He knew it like he knew his own name, like he knew the sun would rise tomorrow, like he knew the beat of his son's heart. He’d chosen right this time and there was nothing that would make him walk away. He would spend the rest of his life showing you just how much you meant to him. He would never take for granted this amazing gift that had somehow walked right onto his baseball field and into his life.
“So, can I ask…I think you were going to tell me that day at the lake but we got a little sidetracked. What is the deal with you and Judith?”
Your head tipped back, eyes tracking the stars as you inhaled deeply, “I don’t know. There was never a specific moment or an event. It’s not like we had a falling out. She’s just always been like that with me. From the moment Justin introduced me to her, she treated me like I just wasn’t good enough. I was never enough for her precious son, you know?”
Steve snorted, “She’s nuts. Has she met you?”
“You’re sweet but I don’t think there’s anything I could ever do that would be enough for her. She always wanted to be the most important to him and I feel like she saw me as a threat. I mean, it’s insane. Isn’t that how it’s supposed to work? You raise your son to be a good man. You hope they find someone who will see that and love them. They choose their person and that person should come first. I mean, it’s the logical order of things. But she never saw it like that. It was like she always had to find a flaw in me to prove that she was better, that she loved Justin more, that his love for her outshone his love for me.”
“Did he…”
“No.” You cut him off, shaking your head. “No. Absolutely not. He took off as soon as he could. That’s why he joined the Marines, to get away from her. He told me he felt like she was smothering him and he couldn't breathe in that house anymore. He also didn’t have the best relationship with his dad. I think Henry cheats on Judith all the time. I’m pretty sure that’s why he goes on so many ‘business trips…’” You air quoted the words. “I think they’re far more pleasure than business. Justin thought so too. He just had to get away from it.”
“Well, I understand the need to get away from toxic parents. Mine weren’t smothering…quite the opposite actually. They just were indifferent unless I was disappointing them. Did you two even see her very much if their relationship wasn’t the best?”
“Not really.” Your fingers trailed along his hand, running over his knuckles. “Holidays, birthdays…you know, the required stuff. But she would be Judith and Henry, well, when he was actually there, he would pick apart Justin. He thought he was a waste, going into the military instead of going to college. Justin was always in a horrible mood when we left. He would put off seeing them for as long as he could.”
“What about Eli? Did they want to be around when he came along?”
“Oh yeah. Well, Judith did anyway. Saw him as her second chance at getting someone to love her best. But Justin kept her at arm’s length as much as he could. He hated seeing what having her around did to me. She questioned everything I did, judged me, picked me apart. She always made me feel like an awful mother. When Eli was first learning to walk, he fell. You know how they are at that age. Their heads are too big for their bodies and they’re like a weeble wobble. He fell and smashed his forehead into the corner of the wall. He had a huge goose egg and I was panicked that he had a serious brain injury. We took him to the E.R. Judith showed up and immediately started telling me what an incompetent mother I was, questioning what I’d been doing when he fell, why I wasn’t watching him. Justin lost it. He blew up at her right in the middle of the hospital. That was the moment he told her that if she couldn’t respect his wife and the mother of his child, then she was no longer welcome to be a part of our lives. I’ve never seen her so put in her place. She had no idea how to respond. Anyway, we didn’t hear from her for about a month after that. It was a bit better then but things with her and I have always been a bit…precarious.”
“Jesus. She sounds awful. And she’s clearly no fan of mine but that’s alright. I don’t need to impress her. The only person I care about impressing is you.” He wiggled his eyebrows, planting a soft kiss on your lips.
“Oh, I am very impressed Mr. Harrington. Very impressed,” you mused, your arms winding around his neck, nose nuzzling gently over his own.
Steve was overcome with the desire to keep you there, to never let you go. Every night, when he would have to gather his things or watch you gather yours, it left him with a hollow ache. Maybe it was soon but who decided how soon was too soon? Was it too soon when all he could think about when you weren't around was seeing you again? Was it too soon when he laid in bed, inhaling the scent of vanilla and pear that you left behind, craving the warmth of your body curled into his?
“Stay,” he whispered, a plea sent on his breath to your skin, his nose tracing your cheek.
“What?”
“Stay. Stay the night with me.” His fingers wrapped around your biceps, holding you against him, willing you to agree. “I know why you’ve wanted to wait. I understand your reasons but your reasons aren’t really reasons anymore.”
“Steve…”
He was losing you. You were going to rationalize your way out of this and he couldn’t let you. He was overcome with an irrational need to get you to stay, to sleep curled up in his arms, to cement the decision that you were real, that this was it. That he was enough for you. That you wanted this as much as he did. He was pushing and he knew it but he couldn’t stop himself. He needed to know. He was in so deep here. He needed to know that you were in it too, barely keeping your head above water, sinking into the depths with him.
“No. Look, the whole reason you wanted to wait was because you didn’t want Eli getting his hopes up just for this to all end. You didn’t want him to see this as serious with him already assuming things. But this is serious and this isn’t ending. Right?”
“I mean, I don’t plan on it but…”
“No. No buts,” he insisted, hands sliding down your arms to wrap around your hands, holding them against him. Bowing his head, he brought your knuckles to his lips, brushing a kiss over them. “This isn’t ending. I’m not going anywhere. Do you plan on going anywhere?”
“Well no…”
“So then why not?”
“I don’t know. I mean, do you really think it’s appropriate for us to share a bed with the boys in the house?”
“Did you share a bed with your husband when Eli was home?”
“That’s different and you know it.”
“Why? Because we’re not married? Marriage is a piece of paper, honey. It’s a piece of paper that doesn’t mean anything because it can be torn in half and discarded so easily. I love you. You love me. The boys want this to happen. I’m not saying let’s get down and dirty.” He grinned devilishly, his cheek running over yours. “Not that I don’t want to. But would it really be inappropriate to sleep in the same bed? When we move in together, we’ll be sharing a bed, right?”
You pulled back, a look of sheer anxiety across your face, “When we…when we move in together?”
“I mean, eventually, right? That would be the logical next step. It’s silly to keep two houses when we spend most of our time together. I mean, whenever we’re apart all I can think about is the next time I get to have you in my arms. I know it may seem soon but really, we’re the only ones who get to decide what soon is. And the way I feel about you, I know it got intense pretty fast but…”
His word died in his throat as he felt the shift in you. Your chest rose and fell rapidly against his, your heart beating a rapid tempo against his skin. Releasing your hands, he grabbed your face, attempting to get your eyes to focus on him. But they were glazed, wide, staring off into nothing as you descended into a full blown attack, an attack he’d caused.
“Hey, hey…you’re okay, baby. Look at me. Come on. Just breathe with me, honey,” he urged.
You were gasping, small little squeaking sounds emitting as you struggled to take in air. Jesus Christ. What had he done? Exactly what he’d sworn he wouldn’t do. He’d pushed you, ran up behind you and shoved you off the ledge before you were ready. And now you w were free falling as he ran underneath you, trying to catch you but failing.
“Shit! Baby, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. You don’t have to spend the night. We’re not moving in together. It’s okay. I’m moving too fast. I do it all the time and I’m sorry. We don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. Just breathe for me, please.”
But you wouldn’t. You couldn’t. He grabbed onto your hands again. They were ice cold. Your skin was damp, clammy, a sheen of sweat coating your forehead and upper lip. And then you were shaking, trembling and he grasped your arms, pulling your body against his but it wouldn’t stop as you wheezed.
This had gone on for too long. It wasn’t stopping. You weren't coming back down. Your breathing was only getting worse if that was even possible. He had to do something.
“Boys!” he screamed as he cradled your quivering body against him. “Call 911!”
Here's a bit of a meta analysis on Eddie and Steve and the general jock/nerd thing. It's worth pointing out that they're still only 19/20ish so they're slightly entitled to be somewhat selfish idiots, but they're at that time of life where they're starting to grow out of it.
There's so many positive reblogs on my last but one text post (where Eddie gets involved with Steve's hobbies) and I find it so interesting that it's not really explored in fic.
I mean...Steve's trying to 'grow as a person' by embracing nerdy things and that's great! Stereotypical high school 'bully' becoming less of a douche bag.
But Eddie embracing the stereotype and doing 'normal' high school stuff? Sign me up! He's a guy that was probably bullied or harassed by the jocks for at least some part of school before he grew hard skin. He's actively (and loudly) denounced them to their faces and protected younger nerdy/outcast kids.
Of course he's going to think sports are shit. That's what those dumb, bullying morons enjoy more than anything, so it's gotta be bad, right? (Hell, you can even take it further and say that his own dad used to beat the shit out of him as a kid if he made a noise when The Game was on.)
So he's prejudiced against the jocks (for a reason, but that's not the point), all while shouting at the top of his lungs about conformity and the bullshit about being a sheep. Yet all he's doing is conforming to a different stereotype, and not really realising it.
It's not until he meets up and speaks with Chrissy that he realises he's judging her without knowing her, and quickly rectifies it by being nicer. Then she dies and he couldn't save her. She was popular and sporty...but she was sweet and nice, and didn't deserve what happened to her.
Then Steve happens. Former Poster Boy for Jocks, and yet he's not a piece of shit either. But Steve's different, he tells himself. Steve's actually a nerd in wolf's clothing. He comes to D&D even if he doesn't play. He watches Star Wars and hangs out with 'unpopular' kids. He's 'better' now. He's learned his lesson.
It doesn't occur to him that Steve's trying to change himself to fit in, and still enjoys all of his own hobbies. He just does it either in secret, or ashamed when 'caught'. So Eddie doesn't see anything wrong. He's been proven right...THE Jock is in their nerdy little group so he's completely validated.
So maybe one night they're all at the Munson's, playing D&D. Except Steve's nowhere to be seen. During a breakin the campaign, he's found in the other room with Wayne and Hopper, watching the football. And Eddie makes some comment or another about Steve backsliding into sports.
And before Steve can say anything, Wayne tells him to stop bullying Harrington into his interests, and let the poor kid enjoy the football if that's what he wants to do.
And Eddie's mortified.
He finishes the campaign for the night on autopilot, the Game ends, and everyone else goes home, oblivious to what those earlier ten seconds has done to Eddie's psyche. Wayne's sitting there with his last beer of the night, and Eddie joins him, quiet and contemplative.
'I'm not a bully.' He says. 'I'm not like my dad.'
And Wayne just looks at him, smile on his face.
'I know.' He says. 'But you can't force everyone to like only your things, son. Just because you don't like football or basketball doesn't mean your friends have to feel the same.'
And Eddie thinks about it. He thinks about it for days. Steve never really complains. Sure he makes comments now and again, but Eddie's taken that as 'Steve's jock side coming out' instead of 'Steve just being frustrated, bored and lonely'. And Eddie can't ignore the feeling that he's actually the one being a total dick right now.
Steve's learnt his lesson. Eddie hasn't.
Steve 'the former douchebag' Harrington is a great guy, and Eddie is unconsciously taking advantage of it to validate himself. He feels like shit.
So he goes to Steve and apologises. But Steve's confused. He still thinks he needs to make reparations for his high school years, like he's conforming in their group as a penance. And Eddie hates himself a little more, because what the fuck. That's what Steve thinks of himself? And Eddie's partially responsible for enabling that, for letting the kids make him feel like that.
So he apologises again, and tell Steve that he's not gong to let it slide anymore. That if he ever wants to go and do something he enjoys, Eddie's down for it. That Steve doesn't need to be at D&D if he wants to watch the sports instead.
He also stops mocking Steve's taste in music, stops trying to force his own music on everyone else, and steps in whenever any of the kids try to do the same. And pretty damn quickly, Steve starts flourishing.
He and Eddie take the kids to the basketball courts, and Steve tries to teach them how to play, before giving up and going 1v1 with Lucas while the others just bounce the spare ball between them and make up their own game. It's fun, and completely outside Eddie's comfort zone, but it's fun.
Steve gets the confidence to start negotiating Eddie's campaign nights when there's an important game on the TV. Half the kids want to watch it with Wayne, Hopper (and weirdly enough, Mrs Henderson). Eddie usually joins them but either reads his book, sits at the table painting his minis, or falls asleep on Steve's lap. Sports just don't interest him, but that's ok too.
It's compromise.
you ain't my boyfriend and i ain't your girlfriend
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing billy hargrove x fem!reader
warnings billy being his usual asshole self, jason carver, reader is lowkey mean, mentions of sex.
summary you and billy aren't dating, but billy doesn't seem to get the memo
word count 973
a/n this is not proofread so sorry if it sucks 💀 I just heard ariana grandes song boyfriend and this idea popped into my head so I decided to write it quick.
Tumblr media
You walked around the edge of the pool, the cute two piece you'd recently bought showing off your figure perfectly. You acted oblivious to the stares everyone gave you, middle aged ladies enraged as their husbands and sons were far from subtle.
You made it to the table where your friends sat, mainly cheerleaders and other girls who had made it into the popular crowd. Though you weren't surprised a few basketball players sat close by, including the new team captain, Jason.
With Billy and Steve graduating, the floor was swept clean for other players to take the top spot. And Jason was the lucky guy who took that spot.
You'd been the captain of the cheer team since just after your freshman year, now a senior and soon to be graduate. And somehow, in Jason's head, this meant that the gas pedal on his longtime crush on you would be pressed. Because obviously the basketball captain needs to be date the cheer captain.
"Y/N!" He called, a overly perfect smile gracing his lips. Teeth that obviously had been artificially whitened and bright blue eyes that squinted due to the sun.
"Jason!" You mocked him, not that he picked up on the mockery.
He went in for a hug with clear ulterior motives, but you would humor him. Releasing him from the hug you sat and sipped on your slushy as you began conversing. Jason's eyes stayed locked on you, your mouth and straw to he exact.
Little did he know that former captain, Billy Hargrove, had also been looking. And he was your favorite hookup.
You and Billy had been hooking up for a little under a year, but you weren't a couple. It was just sex, that was the agreement. He wasn't exclusive, and neither were you.
Billy watched you under the protective equipment of his sunglasses that allowed his eyes to wonder. He was curious what flavor you'd gotten, how it would taste on his tounge, and how your cold, stained mouth would feel on his cock.
His eyes narrowed as he watched you and Jason greet each other excitedly, not able to see the sarcasm on your face as your back was to him, something he didn't mind.
He watched the predatory smile, one all to similar to his, that painted Jason's lips as he hugged you tightly, his hand sliding a little to low for Billy's liking.
Lucky for him, Heather was just about to take over. Hearing the door to the showers opening and seeing the brunette walking out in her red one piece, he began climbing down and walking over to you.
You had been speaking to Jason, or more so nodding your head as you listened to him boast about himself, and fighting to urge to roll your eyes as he flirted with you, his flirting was painful to sit through.
That's when you noticed Billy walking over, his tanned skin glistened in the sun as he took off his sunglasses. You couldn't help but stare as he sauntered over.
You smirked as he stood in front of you, "Hi there." You greeted him innocently.
"Hi, how's everyone doing?" He asked the table, though he obviously could not give a single fuck about their answers.
The table echoed with several flirty variations of good, such as 'better now that you're here.'
He nodded silently before looking down at you, "Think I could steal you for a minute?"
"Yes sir." You stood and followed him a bit a ways away from the table, staring as he leaned further down so you could hear his lowered his voice over the excitable screams of children.
"So what was that?"
You knew exactly what he was talking about, but you decided to play with your food a little and play dumb. "Sorry?"
He cocked his head in annoyance before continuing, "Don't sorry me, you know what I'm talking about baby... That douchebag over there you keep flirting with."
You looked back at Jason before turning back to Billy, "What, Jason? What about him?"
"Why's he all over you?" He questioned in a low tone.
You kept up the innocent doe eyes as you looked into his green-blue stare, "That's a question you should ask him don't you think?"
"Well I'm asking you, so tell me... what made him think he's allowed to talk to you?" He inquired, acting as if you'd done something to lead Jason on previously.
You narrowed your eyes defensively, "What I'm not allowed to talk to other boys?"
"Watch your tone..."
"Why should I? Don't tell me Mister Hargrove is jealous!" You squealed a bit, a ploy to embarrass him further with your accusation.
"I'm not jealous, don't get it twisted. You're mine, and I don't like sharing..."
"I'm yours? Since when?"
He smirked, looking at your eyes then your lips, "Since you stuffed my dick in your mouth."
"So, let me get this straight. I'm not allowed to talk to other guys, but you're allowed to flirt with every girl that looks at you?" You asked.
Billy chuckled as he looked away from you for a moment, showing how he didn't care about your argument.
"I want you to listen closely, okay? I am not your property, you do not own me, you do not get to dictate who I hang out with or talk to."
He sighed heavily, as his eyes traveled your form.
"You are not my boyfriend, and I'm not your girlfriend. We are not exclusive, that has been the agreement since day one. I've kept up my end, you keep up yours."
You turned to walk away from him after you finished your little speech, putting an extra swing in your hips to tease him further. He laughed to himself before sliding his sunglasses back on and walking away.
You're mine
Prompt number: 15 "What are you doing?"
Fandom: Stranger Things
Paring: Perv!Jonathan Byers x naïve!reader
Rating: 18+
Word count: 2.4k+
Warnings: Swearing I think. Jonathan being a perv and hella inappropriate. Smutish/fingering technically.
A/N: Um, hello. How is it fictober again? I feel like last years just ended. I don't know what came over me when writing this, but I hope you guys enjoy it!
Tumblr media
Jonathan’s obsession with you started at a very young age, it started the day you transferred to Hawkins elementary school in the middle of third grade. You approached him on your very first day of school, he was the quiet kid in the back of the class that was doodling whenever you glanced at him, and you approached him at recess and asked him to play on the playground with you. Jonathan was obsessed immediately, you were the prettiest girl he had ever seen, and you were the first person to talk to him without teasing him for his haircut, or his clothes, or his face. You were an angel sent down to and for him.
In the years since third grade there wasn’t a day you spent apart from each other, Jonathan made sure of that. From casual run ins downtown when you were shopping, to convincing Lonnie to take you on a camping trip with them the one time Lonnie actually fulfilled his duties of spending time with his sons. You had gotten so used to being around Jonathan every day that if you didn’t see him it felt like something was missing. The first time Jonathan didn’t seek you out was because he had the flu and was bedridden, it was nearly dinner time when you went to the Byers’ house because you wanted to see him- you needed to see him, it was as if you could not function without seeing him. Your best friend was pleased with your distressed reaction after not seeing him for less than a day, but he held off pushing you further for a while, not wanting to startle you away.
He remembers the first time he really felt like a perv, it was seventh grade. You had convinced him to go to the playground at your old elementary school to goof around after you both had a very big test in pre algebra. Jonathan was off to the side sitting on a park bench when you were running around the playground to let your stress out. When you went down the slide, the woosh of air forced the front of your skirt up, something you didn’t notice, but Jonathan did. The moment is forever ingrained in his memory, your baby blue skirt flaring up just enough that he caught a glimpse of the pale pink cotton panties you wore underneath.
And you remember the first time someone ever called him a perv. A very pissed off Steve approached you in the hallway berating you for being friends with a perv like Jonathan, someone who goes around taking photos of other peoples half naked girlfriends. You didn’t believe a word of it, because your sweet innocent and shy Jonathan would never do such a thing, you would know if he was like that, afterall you spend more time with him than anyone else. Jonathan swore up and down that Steve was lying and just wanted an excuse to bully him and break his camera. And you believed Jonathan, because he would never lie to you.
Sleepovers have become a staple of your friendship with Jonathan, whether it be he sleeps at your house or you sleep at his. Your parents along with Joyce let the two of you sleep in your beds together, all three of them assuming that if something were to happen between you two it would have happened by now, so they weren’t worried and they don’t have an open door policy. Something that Jonathan takes full advantage of, and you're oblivious to abuse of the rules, or lack thereof.
With every sleepover Jonathan would just grow bolder and bolder. It started off small, moving the sheets down a few inches to get a glace at the curvature of your ass as your nightgown rode up in your sleep. At the next sleepover, less than ten days later, he worked up enough courage to graze his fingers along your pantyline, pleased to see that the pair you were wearing that night was pale pink, just like the first ones he saw a few years prior. After that night it started to snowball, and he became borderline reckless.
You fell asleep watching a new episode of cheers- a show that you had begged Jonathan to watch? That was fine, he would cover the two of you with a blanket, and pull you into his side until you were curled around him- Joyce thought it was sweet whenever she saw it, but it was anything but. He would cautiously take your hand and slide it up his thighs and onto his growing bulge, and when the excitement from that alone wore off, he would then slowly, carefully, drag your hand back and forth over himself.
You brought over your well worn white cotton bra, starting to yellow from how old it was? It was perfect for Jonathan! You’d take it off to sleep- naturally- and when tiny little snores left your lips Jonathan would pull it out of your backpack you had stuffed it in after changing into your pajamas, and take it to the bathroom with him. There he would quickly rub one out and ejaculate into the cups of your bra. He always did it early enough in the night that his semen would be all dried up by the time you awoke and put it on in the morning. The insides of your bra would feel weird and crusty when you’d put it back on in the morning, but you always assumed that it was just dried sweat from the day before and that you’d need to wash it again when you got home- you didn’t know any better.
Jonathan had a series of pictures of you, he made sure he was alone when he developed them- your body is his, nobody else can see the parts of you he does- and then he tucks them in the middle of his copy of ‘where the sidewalk ends,’ before shoving the book deep in his closet for good measure. If Joyce or Will ever found those photos everything would be ruined, Jonathan just knew he’d never be allowed to see you again. And if you ever found them? He’s sure you’d call him a perv and a freak, just like everyone else.
The pictures varied in borderline innocent to utterly depraved. The first picture of you that got shoved into his book started out completely innocent. He had an assignment for class- to take candid photos of the people around him- simple enough. Jonathan could waste rolls of film taking candid's of you, everything you did was breathtaking and he wanted to capture it all, to get every little face you make. So he obviously chooses to take quite a few candid's of you for the assignment, he obviously takes some of Will and Joyce too so his teacher doesn’t think he’s an obsessed weirdo when it comes to you. But what he didn’t take into account was that you're wearing a shirt that is just slightly too big for you that day, and with the smallest movement it will slide off your shoulder and down your chest a bit. The photo is a complete accident, you’re leaning forward laughing at something he said- you always laugh harder at his jokes than he deserves, and because you’re leaning forward your shirt dips low. Low enough to get a glimpse of your bra, it’s the first time he’s seen a bra on you and not just in your bag. Although the photo is in black and white he can still vividly remember the cream color of your bra that’s on display.
Not long after that incident, he finds himself in the Nancy incident. Jonathan can’t work up the courage to take more risque photos of you, so he goes for a walk around the woods in order to walk off some of his frustration. On his walk he stumbles upon the Harrington house, and movement in the upstairs window catches his eye. The entire time he snaps the photos of Nancy in King Steve’s window, he’s wishing it’s you- not that you’re sleeping with Harrington, but that he could capture you in such a compromising position, one that he doesn’t have to set up himself. He’s angry and upset with the aftermath of the situation, how dare Steve break his camera, the thing that captured his photos of you. He was also worried that you’d leave him when Steve told you, but he didn’t. He went out of his way to befriend Nancy after that and conned a newer, better, camera out of her and Steve.
After he received his new camera was when he became more adventurous with it. Gone were the days of trying to capture compromising photos of you spontaneously, and here were the days of depravity. It still started off small, photos of your panties on display, the result of your nightgown shifting during sleep. A few up the skirt photos at his dining room table, playing his cassettes so loud that you can’t hear the cameras’ click over the music. No longer did he ejaculate into your bras in the bathroom, no, he did that in the same room as your sleeping form. That was no longer enough for him, and soon he decided to jerk himself off standing above you while you slept soundly, taking pictures to prove to himself that this wasn’t just another wet dream. And one night when he was feeling completely reckless, he stood next to your face while jerking off, leaning forward and resting the tip against your slightly parted lips. He nearly came at the feeling of your soft lips finally touching him there, so he quickly snapped many photos to look back on that day and jerk off to.
Today started out like any other day, Jonathan picking you up for school, you with your backpack and duffle bag since you’re spending the night at his house this weekend. School was boring as ever, and of course Jonathan, and you by extension, are made fun of. When the day comes to a close you pick up Will from AV club and drop him off at Mike’s because the party is having their own sleepover. When you finally get to the Byers’ house Joyce is already home from work and has you two watch a movie with her, much to Jonatha’s chagrin as he wanted to be alone with you.
You end up falling asleep on Jonathan’s shoulder some time during what you think is the third movie you three have watched. Jonathan wakes you when the movie ends, you stumble to his room and quickly change into your nightgown before flopping into his bed and immediately falling back to sleep. Or at least that’s what Jonathan thinks. Instead of falling back into a deep sleep- like you normally do- you merely doze off, and Jonathan doesn’t wait long enough to make sure you’re really asleep.
You wake up to the feeling of cold fingers running up the back of your thighs and towards your center. Your heart immediately starts to pound and you’re about to scream for Jonathan when you hear the familiar sound of his camera’s shutter. It’s Jonaathan who’s touching you like this in your sleep, he’s the one that’s slowly moving your underwear down your legs. You don’t know why you don’t react in that moment, maybe it’s shock, but Jonathan takes it as confirmation that you’re truly asleep.
The camera clicks in quick succession after that, and his fingers become more adventurous, running over your lips. You bite back a moan at the unfamiliar, but very pleasant, feeling. You feel yourself growing wet, a completely new sensation to you. Jonathan lets out a quiet moan behind you, snapping more pictures as he slides his fingers into your wet core. The new feeling forcing a moan out of you, Jonathan stills at the sound, but he doesn’t pull his finger out.
“(Y/N)?” he whispers quietly, hoping that you’ve just moaned in your sleep.
“J-jonathan, what are you doing?” you clench around his finger as you look back at him. Jonathan can’t help but capture one more photo, your confused look and his finger buried deep in you.
“N-nothing,” Jonathan stutters, quickly pulling his finger out of you, and you whine at the empty feeling. Jonathan’s life is flashing before his eyes, what would he do if you decided to never talk to him again? He’d probably die.
“Jonathan, tell me what you were doing,” you flip onto your back before settling into a criss-cross position, unknowingly giving Jonathan a straight shot to your glistening vagina. The view and the fact that you weren’t running away screaming gave him courage and a confidence he never possessed, not when you were awake at least.
“I was taking more photos to add to my collection,” he holds your gaze, hands reaching forward to rub the tops of your thighs.
“You have a collection?” you ask intrigued, you know you should be scared, but it’s Jonathan. You have nothing to be scared about. “Can I see?”
Jonathan is all too excited to show you, springing off his bed and grabbing his book from the back of his closet. You gasp when he hands you a stack of photos, at least fifty of them. You’re shocked that you don’t come across any of Nancy, now that you figure Steve must have been telling you the truth, but there are only photos of you. You in compromising positions, even ones when you’ve showered in his bathroom, how did he slip in without you noticing? But the one your eyes linger on is the photo of his dick pressed to your lips, white hot heat runs through your body and straight to your core.
“When did you take this one?” you ask, not tearing your eyes away from the photo, it’s like your entranced.
“Two weeks ago, it’s my favorite too,” he smiles at you, sitting down beside you and leaning against the headboard.
“Jonathan,” you murmur, closing your legs tight and rubbing your thighs together in hopes of some friction.
“You’re mine, (Y/N),” you should feel scared at how possessive he’s being. You should fight him as his hand pries your thighs apart before finding your wet core again.
“Will you take more photos of me like this? Without me knowing?” your legs fall open on their own, giving his hand more freedom.
“I can’t lie to you, I will,” his finger slides up and starts flicking your bud.
“I’m yours,” you moan, practically orgasming at the thought of all the compromising positions you’ll put yourself in just for him.
My Heart Will Wait
Fandom: The Avengers Pairing: Steve Rogers x Male!Reader Summary: Steve likes you a lot, he doesn't know if you like him back Word Count: 617 Request: Can I please request a Steve rogers x male reader who’s tony Starks son and Steve has a crush on him but doesn’t know if Tony’s son is even into him bc tony is a playboy and his son has a similar reputation
Tumblr media
Steve had to really get over his crushes on the Starks.
Though, it wasn't your fault that you and your family line have been blessed by the Goddess Aphrodite.
Steve has a type.
But, his current fixation was on you. The smart and dapper youngest Stark. Though, you weren't that young anymore. You were an adult with great ambitions, you want to see the work and hopefully take on the family business.
You were the crush of Steve Rogers, and admittedly he feels just a bit pathetic about it. The Starks has a reputation, the big shot of America, and one of the few families that people were invested in. You cared only about yourself and your family, and Steve sees you like your dad.
A playboy.
You like to be flirty with anyone you come across that was your type, but what he doesn't know is that you gave up that image years ago. You were like your dad, unhinged and off the rails during your college days, but you've matured and grown.
"You're quiet," Bucky says, leaning against the back of the armchair that Steve was occupying, "So, what's bothering you?"
"I'm not bothered about anything."
"Hm, by the sound of it, there is, and as your best friend what's wrong?"
"Nothing."
Steve looks at him with a disappointed look as Bucky stares back with a pointed look. Steve elected to ignore his best friend and turn his attention back to his sketchbook as Bucky sighs in defeat before promptly plopping down on the sofa next to the armchair.
There was silence.
"So, when are you going to admit that you have a crush on (Y/n)?"
Steve chokes on his breathing then snaps his head to look at Bucky.
"I don't-"
"Then, why did you react like that?"
Steve flushed red, before ducking his head down to look at his sketchbook, was it that obvious that he was interested in you that everyone else could tell?
"Don't worry, (Y/n) is as oblivious as a cat."
"Cats are observant, they pretend not to be."
Bucky simply smiles as Steve cannot help but bury his face in his hands. He wanted the floor to swallow him up.
"Great, of course he knows," Steve exclaimed, "I don't think he evens like me! Especially-"
"Almost killing his dad."
"I wasn't going to outright say it."
Bucky shrugs his shoulders, finding it funny at his friend's despair, "It's not that all bad, I think (Y/n) has gotten over that."
"Even if he did," Steve stressed out before straightening his back and leaning back into the armchair, "He doesn't like me back, he has other people that he likes."
"Have you asked him?"
"Have you ever asked a girl if they liked you back?"
"Yeah."
Steve looks at his best friend in disbelief, no wonder Bucky was able to get a lot of dates back in the old days, he just doesn't have that same confidence. You are a pretty boy, and whilst he was the face of America, he just couldn't compare to you.
You had people queuing up to date you, and you could pick anyone to make you happy, Steve didn't think he could be that person. Even if he does get with you, you could just find him boring and find another person to fill that hole in your heart.
"Try talking to him at least, you've been avoiding him for the past two weeks he's starting to think you hate him now."
Bucky was right, he's usually right. Steve just needs to bite the bullet and muster all the courage he can. After all, he won't know until you give him the answer.
Matt Tholomule HC’s
• Steve is twelve years older than him, and he was pretty much always the one taking care of Matt growing up.
• Steve and Matt share a dad. Steve’s mom is out of the picture, and Matts mom is nice, she treats Steve like her own, but they’re both busy witches and Matty was their little surprise. So they rarely had the time for him, which is why Steve stepped up to raise his little brother. Once Matt was old enough to stay at home on his own, and Steve left for the emperor’s coven, he had to learn how to get by on his own, which is how he ended up as one of Bria’s “friends” at Glandus.
• After enduring so much bullying, troublemaking, and detention at Glandus (a lot of his acting out had stemmed from absent parents growing up and now feeling like his brother had abandoned him), his parents finally decided to transfer him to Hexside, hoping that Matt’s dad’s alma mater would do his son some good.
• Matt isn’t poor, but his family doesn’t have a lot of money either. Being the youngest, he got a lot of secondhand items from Steve, whether it was clothes or electronics. This is partially why Steve left to go join the Emperor’s Coven guard at 18, because he’d had a lot of trouble finding a path for his life and being a guard would at least bring in some steady income.
• Matt hung onto every one of Steve’s letters he received while his brother was away in the guard. He kept them hidden behind his collection of worn Blademage books.
• Matt became obsessed with Blademage after Steve introduced him to the series, on one of his visits home. Matt felt lonely, he had no friends at school and with his parents and brother gone, he collected unique interests to pass his time. He often went exploring the Titan by himself. One day he was walking on the beach when he saw a lady digging through a ton of trash and finding treasure. He recognized her as Eda the Owl Lady from her wanted posters posted all over town. (And yes, if he’s done odd jobs for Tibbles, he’s definitely done some odd jobs for Eda.) He rooted through the trash after her and became interested in the human artifacts he found. He started a collection and researched what he could on humans and the things he’d found. He was actually excited to learn that Hexside had a Human Appreciation Society, he just felt insecure and guarded, desiring to establish his place in Hexside society as a bully because he would not get bullied at another school.
• He started pursuing construction because of his parents. All his extra energy was perfectly channeled into the track, and it was a practical career move. Lucky for them, he is good at it and he does like it. But it wasn’t until Gus introduced him to illusions that he actually felt like he’d found his calling in school. “Illusions ARE practical!” He argued with his parents when he wanted to take on illusions as a track, “Augustus taught me how to do this.” Once his parents realized he was driven and passionate about this, they relented and let him do both.
• Matt developed a crush on Gus sometime after their first trip to the ruins. But he sure as hell would not admit it. He felt stupid for crushing on his only friend, felt like he would fuck it all up and lose Gus if he knew. Besides, it was Gus, and he was so far out of Matt’s league that it wasn’t even funny. But Matt’s also a bit oblivious because he never noticed the signs that Gus liked him back, until Gus actually confesses to him a good while after everything starts to return to some normalcy after the Collector.
• Matty has the biggest potty mouth anyone can imagine. He tries not to swear around his parents, but when it’s just him and Steve home, he lets the floodgates loose. Which is convenient because Steve is just as bad, if not worse.
very, very small
a mini fic in which a very regressed eddie is very clingy during a bad thunderstorm and steve and wayne have to work together to comfort him
Steve knows something is off with Eddie. In the past few months since closing all the gates and killing Vecna, Eddie has been almost permanently regressed.
Everything set him off.
It seemed as though every time Eddie was coming out of a regression, something would happen and cause him to slip again. Of course, nobody really minded taking care of Eddie- especially not Steve or Wayne.
Eddie’s favorite nights are the nights like these- when Wayne and Steve are both off work and he gets to spend time with both of them. Though, he hadn’t realized they’d purposefully taken off work due to the major storm heading to Hawkins.
Wayne sighs as he listens to the TV, exchanging worried looks with Steve. The news reporter is going on and on about high winds and severe storms with a tornado watch to top it off. Eddie, oblivious to the TV, is more worried about his coloring book. It’s not unusual for Eddie to be busy coloring on the living room floor while Steve and Wayne watch TV, and that meant Eddie had grown accustomed to ignoring boring grown up shows.
Then, he sees it.
Lightning strikes right outside of the living room window.
Eddie jumps. He can see the red lightning from the Upside Down right next to his vine covered trailer. Before he knows it, he’s abandoned his coloring and looking worriedly at his caretakers. “Unc’a Wayne! ‘Teve!”
Before either of them can respond, the winds begin to pick up and the rain starts pounding against the roof.
Steve is quick to pick up the boy and shush him, but he knows it’s futile. “You’re alright, little guy. It’s just a bad storm.” He looks over to Wayne, who is busy grabbing Eddie’s things off the floor. “Should we go to his room?”
Thunder crashes, causing all three of them to jump.
Eddie cries out whilst aggressively wriggling against Steve. “Unc’a Wayne! I wan’ Unc’a Wayne!” His ear piercing cries only get louder as Steve carries him to his bedroom, despite the fact Wayne is close behind.
“Shh, shh” Steve coos, gently setting him on his bed. “We’re all gonna have a sleepover tonight, okay?”
Wayne walks into the room a few moments later, all of Eddie’s living room toys and books in his hands. Eddie lets out a loud babble at the sight of his uncle.
They tuck themselves in under the covers, which allows Eddie to curl up against Wayne’s chest. Steve feels a slight pang of jealously, but he knows Eddie didn’t mean anything by it. Wayne had been his first caretaker.
Eddie suckles anxiously on his thumb, crying loudly whenever something outside scared him. “No! Don’t wanna scare the bats! I don’ wanna!”
Knowing the story from Steve, Wayne feels his heart break. His little boy- a decoy for demonic bats? “Son, that’s over. No bat or storm or monster is going to hurt you.”
“Too loud! Too loud!” Eddie smashes his hands over his ears at the sound of the rain picking up. “No!”
Steve thumbs tears away from the boy’s cheek while Wayne rocks him back and forth. The soothing motion does bring Eddie a bit of comfort, but not as much as his thumb does. On a normal day, Steve would have redirected Eddie away from thumb sucking, but now? He’s desperate for anything that will stop those tears from falling.
“Unc’a Wayne! Loud! Is’ Loud!”
Wayne nods, bouncing Eddie gently. “Steve, can you get his walkman? It’s on his desk. There should be a Bla-”
“-ck Sabbath tape,” Steve finishes for him. He jumps off the bed and gathers Eddie’s headphones, walkman, and tapes. Eddie’s favorite Black Sabbath tape was already ready to go. “Okay, baby,” Steve says softly, placing the headphones over Eddie’s ears. “I’m gonna play some music for you. Let me know if it’s too loud.”
Wayne feels Eddie relax almost immediately at the sound of the music. At first, he thinks it’s due to Eddie loving his music- which he does- but then he is reminded that that’s not the case. Eddie tugs on his shirt, and points at his headphones. “Unc’a Wayne, now the monster can’t get me.”
Wayne sighs sadly. “That’s good, son. The monster can’t get you.”
That night, Eddie sleeps soundly against Wayne’s chest with Steve’s hand in his own. No one else can really sleep due to the metal music playing from Eddie’s headphones, but it’s not as if they’d be able to in the first place. They watch over Eddie for hours until the storm finally stops, until their eyes finally close.
“We love you, Eds.”
“More than anything.”
Ohmygod both of my favorite series from you show up multiple times in your wip list 😭😭😭 how am i supposed to chooooose???
If you're up for it, I would love to hear more about dial u 👀
Hope your week's off to a good start, tej!
Bri, my sweet! 🌻 I'm well, thank you. It's been a rough and busy couple of weeks and I'm looking forward to some time away soon. I hope you're having a good week so far 💞✨
Thanks so much for asking! I am more than happy to provide you with a sneak peek into dial 'u' for uncles.
It's a weekend of Bucky (and a reluctant Steve) babysitting Becca's son which goes a little bit haywire and disrupts Steve's aspiring DINK-lifestyle.
Steve’s head is pounding. The minute he gets back to his apartment, he wants to grab a beer and hide out in the bathroom. He has Matty’s backpack, a plastic bag of wet clothes and a headache as he holds the door open for Bucky and a screaming Matty to enter the apartment. Matty’s cries are piercing and he hasn’t stopped sobbing since they left the zoo. Apparently Matty did not want to leave the zoo, even though it was closing time and he practically goes there monthly. He didn’t cry when he fell into the fountain and Steve fished him out. Bucky had to buy an entire new outfit for Matty so he looks like a walking advertisement for Brooklyn Zoo. Plus, Steve bought Matty an ice cream to be nice, but which evidently unlocked a dairy demon who subsequently kept demanding ice cream every time they passed by a cart. But the moment that Bucky told Matty to say goodnight to all the animals, all hell broke loose. The entire thirty minute subway ride home, Matty was inconsolable, clutching onto the stuffed giraffe that he refused to leave the gift store without as if his life depended on it. Steve was useless. He could barely do much more than just give people apologetic looks (and he’s ashamed to admit for five minutes he did try to pretend that he didn’t know Matty). Bucky snapped at him, he snapped back, all the while Matty cried the entire time, oblivious to their turmoil.
Tumblr media
"Well, I won't die for love," was what you thought. Maybe you should go for your stuff and go. You wouldn't tell anyone; you would just disappear. "I'll leave if you let me..." but he didn't have to find out. You didn't even know if he would tell you or just act.
First, you looked around the room, then you walked around the place. You couldn't stop thinking. You also didn't know what to say to Steve. It seemed that he had made a decision and did not include you. He still didn't dare tell you anything. However, you found out from accidentally hearing a conversation between Steve and Bucky.
You didn't know what to do or how to act before he came. Your whole relationship with him has probably been an illusion, a lie.
Tumblr media
A couple of days later, you finally thought you should talk about what was going on. As soon as he entered the bedroom, you sat on the bed.
"Steve, we have to talk," you said. He was startled. He thought you were asleep.
"What's wrong?"
"Steve... Please tell me what's going on. Don't lie... Please, don't leave, please—you pleaded, you never planned what you would say to him.
I'm running out of time to tell you...
"Tell me what?"
Silence, you didn't get any response from Steve. It was as if you were talking to nothing. It even seemed that he was ignoring you. Steve didn't dare to say a single word; he just got up and left. "And if truth be told, it's scary, 'cause my shoulders are heavy already," you thought. So, if he didn't tell you anything, you wouldn't either. It would be your little secret. If he didn't mind leaving you and his son, he shouldn't care or be bothered by you disappearing from his life either. You took the baby from the crib, where he slept peacefully, oblivious to all the drama that was going on.
You took your things, you had to leave as soon as possible, no one would know the truth. You didn't care what happened to him or any of the others anymore. Now your priority was someone else. Someone Steve would never know. Then you would think about what you would say to your baby when he asked you about his father.
"You shoot for the memory, so you can forget me." You quickly wrote on a sheet and hid the note in the photo album they had. Those photos have already ceased to have meaning for you.
Tumblr media
You didn't know where you'd go, but you'd make sure Steve or anyone else found them. From now on, it will be just you and your son. Steve had destroyed the family they formed, but you weren't going to do anything to fix it.
I'm running out of things that I regret... On your wedding day, you almost ran away. You didn't even know the reasons, but it seemed more impulsive. Maybe you were trying to save yourself from the pain you would feel in the future without knowing it.
Tumblr media
Sometimes you had a dream that disturbed you so much that it seemed more like a nightmare in which Steve found them, made you many promises, and convinced you to get back together. And after a few days, he left again.
"Don't leave me in the shape you left me," you pleaded.
Tumblr media
When Steve returned from his trip to the past, he did not know how he would explain what happened to you. However, he was very surprised to discover that he was now alone in the house. There was not a single trace of you or your son.
Please don't leave.
Finally, he finally understood the mistake he made. The only thing he wanted now was to get his family back. He didn't know how he would do it, but he wanted them back. In the following months, he looked for them without success.
Tumblr media
2 years later,
 You took the grocery list and turned to see your son, who showed you his beautiful smile.
"Are you ready, champion?" You asked, and he nodded.
You bought everything you needed from the supermarket and a stuffed animal that your son liked. When they arrived at the house, you immediately turned around, feeling a presence behind you. You frowned. You never imagined finding her again, although, of course, you knew the reason why she was there.
"Lorna, it's been a long time."
"Two years exactly. Doesn't your best friend deserve an explanation? "
"I guess you know what Steve did. You can't claim anything from me; you did the same with Marcos. "
"It was a different reason; I wanted a world where Dawn didn't have to run away or hide."
And all I wanted was for my family, as it was long ago, to want my son to grow up with his dad and mom, not that old man Steve became.
"You should have told me what you were planning. I could help you. "
If you want to help me, don't tell anyone where we live. "You said that Steve has no rights, not after what he did."
I won't tell anyone, but we will keep in touch. After what he did, Marcos and I walked away from them. We didn't think his decision was fair. "
At least now everything would be less lonely, and sure enough, both Marcos and Lorna helped them so that Steve would never find them again.
