On the April 11, 1999 season premier of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (in what would be the last season on Sci-Fi) TV's Frank (Frank Coniff) and Joel Robinson (Joel Hodgson) made surprise cameos. Frank revealed to Pearl Forrester (Mary Jo Pehl) that his time in Second Banana Heaven was short lived due to coming in conflict with Pat Buttram. He was now working as a Soultaker. He wasn't impressed with Pearl's henchmen Professor Bobo (Kevin Murphy) and Observer (Bill Corbett) at first, but he and Bobo ended up really hitting it off. Joel, who managed a Hot Fish Shop since returning to Earth, revealed that he learned that Doctor Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulieu) had set the Satellite of Love to self destruct, so spent a lot of money to fly up to the ship to repair it. It was Frank's first appearance since he left in season 6 Sampson vs the Vampire Women (March 25, 1995) and Joel's first since he left in season 5 Mitchell (October 23, 1993). While Joel would return in the Netflix series as Ardy and other characters, he wouldn't appear again as Joel Robinson until June 24, 2022 episode Demon Squad. ("Soul Taker", Mystery Science Theater 3000, TV Event)

98. Episode 804 The Deadly Mantis
Summary: Bomb tests on an island off Antarctica have caused vibrations in the Earth that wake a prehistoric giant mantis from its frozen hibernation on the other side of the Earth in the Arctic. It attacks several isolated weather stations on the US’s northernmost radar defense defense line before the military brings in a paleontologist from the Natural History Museum (and the tag-along lady reporter who works for the museum’s magazine) to identify the creature. Now it’s up to the civilian ground observation force to watch the skies and track the mantis as it heads south.
MST3K lore or notable moments: This episode is from when the show was on the sci-fi channel, and they did ongoing plot lines in the sketches for those seasons. This is the episode that ends the planet of the apes pastiche, when the super intelligent apes destroy themselves by helping a local bomb-worshiping cult repair their planet-destroying bomb, and the SoL crew, Pearl in her van, and Professor Bobo as a stowaway flee the blast just in time. It resumes the Pearl chasing the SoL in her space van format, and establishes Professor Bobo as a regular character outside his planet. Also, Mike accidentally helps the apes repair the bomb by advising them to use the correct tool, so the bots decide that the planet’s destruction is Mike’s fault. This will become a running gag across several episodes of the sci-fi era.
What do I think about it’s place on the list? I love the goofy black and white 50s giant monster movies with a hero scientist and lots of military stock footage, so I would be recommending this one to go higher on the list if not for how badly the second half drags. The sketches are pretty strong for the sci-fi era, though, which is also in the movie’s favor. Probably in about the right place on the list, but with the option to move up when I start encountering episodes that need to move down.

A Random Thought About MST3K
(We will resume your regularly scheduled Inanimate Insanity angst soon after our breaking news.)
So I'm watching Season 13 of MST3K, or at least the part of it currently showing on the MST3K Forever-a-thon, and I finally realized something that always made the reboot seasons feel off in comparison to the originals- and it's not the hosts, Jonah and Emily and Joel all do great, it's not less funny, it's not the Mads, it's not the multiple versions of the bots or the fact that it's on the moon.
It's the host segments...but not the part you think.
A thing with MST3K is that the host segments all kinda tend to follow different patterns, at least what from what I've seen watching a ton of it. Now, each Host Tenure? Hosts Tenure for the latest, but each division lets say tends to have a higher focus on a certain type- not saying the other types don't exist, but each section tends to focus on one more.
Joel's tenure as host includes a lot of guest characters- characters that'll appear in that little window up in the Satellite of Love, generally from the movie they're riffing but there are exceptions depending on the circumstance.
Mike's tenure instead utilizes a lot of unique plots, especially once we get to the Sci-Fi era- these can be one-off like Crow biting Mike in Werewolf, the time travel plot in Time Chasers, the mirror universe from Last of the Wild Horses, or they can be larger overall plots- the Ancient Greece Arc, Deep Ape, the Observers, or the space children for a smaller example.
Jonah/Emily's* tenure has a lot of songs- famously there's Every Country Has a Monster, but there's also Concepts, Sing a Song for Jiger, Monster RSVP, a host segment entirely dedicated to some song that some or all characters on the SoL sing.
(*I didn't include Joel because I wanted to focus on the hosts exclusive to the reboot.)
Now, again, I'm not saying these are mutually exclusive- The Gauntlet is practically a season-long arc for Jonah, Mike encounters plenty of guest characters, and who could forgot that classic Joel-era song Idiot Control Now? But looking over the general vibe of the reboot-era host segments, I realized something that lead to a bigger realization.
Guest characters are now no longer shown through the Satellite of Love, instead being shown through transmissions, they're in other spacecraft- befitting of the more sci-fi elements of the reboot literally being on the moon, but...
...you ever notice that the reboot-era host segments have a less physical feeling than the classic episodes? It doesn't really feel like anyone's on a set anymore, like actual physical locations. Sure, there can still be depth but...it's hard to put into exact words but the locations shown in host segments now feel 2.5D instead of 3D. Most action happens in a straight line, all camera angles are straightforward. It feels less like a location and more like a big, long table with a background. Hell, it's something I noticed occurring more and more- up until Season 13 Moon 13 was a 3D location, but in the Gizmoplex era...now they're also on a 2D plane.
Now let's not get it twisted- I'm not saying they're bad, they're still funny and by all means that's the main requirement, I like the return of the invention exchanges that vanished early-ish into the Mike era, hell I like that S11 actually made a small arc that you have to pay attention to out of them to know it's even there- if you haven't watched it yet, I'm not gonna spoil it, it's free if you have Netflix. But it's just a small thing I noticed in the reboot era that I felt like I had to get down somewhere.
Anyway, back to Experiment 1310- H.G. Wells' The Shape of Things to Come.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Making it fun to yell at the movie since 1975), Part 1
[All images are owned by 20th Century Fox Disney....wait, really?! Anyway, please don't sue, kill, eat, or...whatever they did to everyone at the end...me]
WARNING: This review is NSFW, as it deals with sexual themes. You’ve been warned.
Are you OK with this? Good, then let’s continue.
youtube
(Thanks to 20th Century Studios)
In 1973 a little-known actor named Richard O’Brien decided to write and compose a musical stage production as a way to explore his own questions about his sexuality. Two years later, it was adapted for a movie…and late-night movies (especially around Halloween) haven’t been the same since.
While the movie wasn’t well-received as far as ticket sales went, when theaters started doing midnight showings of the film it developed a cult following, as well as becoming a banner for the queer community, with patrons of both genders dressing as the cast, as well as in their best feminine intimate wear…
(Thanks to Liverpool Echo)
…and talking back to/over the movie (a la MST3K) and bring props to display/throw (much to the employees’ chagrin. After all, they have to clean it all up after the movie’s over). Most theater-goers have a “script” of how they choose to do so (of course, if everyone has a different script in their head it can get very chaotic) If you’re curious, there are several versions online. Here’s one such example.
This review is going to be done slightly different than most, even the one that was essentially a musical in that I will be going over the songs after the clips (as most of the plot is driven through them) and will be including audience partici…
SAY IT!
…pation lines (at least the ones I do) on occasion. These will be done in chat font, as above.
(Word of warning, despite whatever I may say at the movie, it’s not intended to be mean-spirited. I’m just going along with the show)
So, without further ado, let’s get on with the show! If you would like to watch the film, it's behind your favorite paywall, or if you want the full experience, find out which of your local theaters is showing it on Halloween!
youtube
(Thanks to Dr. Frank-N-Furter)
So just whose lips are those? Well, scuttlebutt says that Mick Jagger volunteered his, but was turned down. Instead, those belong to Patricia Quinn (who plays Magenta). However, the voice is not Quinn’s, but O’Brien’s. Now, if you actually paid attention to the opening credits instead of just responding to the song, you’ll know exactly who is playing what. However, I will clue you in when they make their first appearance anyway.
Now, back to the movie as we dissolve to a church…
These lips died for your sins!
…where a wedding has just transpired (This is where the audience should start throwing rice at the screen). The photographer gets a photo of the happy couple and the family.
Now I have their souls!
The groom has a quick chat with his best man, Brad Majors, ...
ASSHOLE!
...played by Barry Bostwick (who was the mayor in Spin City) as the bride throws the bouquet
Hey, who has herpes?
…where it’s caught by Brad’s girlfriend, Janet Weiss, ...
SLUT!
...played by Susan Sarandon (who was half of Thelma and Louise)
This inspires Brad to sing to her. Before we get to the song, I have to wonder…
…who the hell puts a billboard in the middle of a cemetery? OK, on to the song!
youtube
(Thanks to Goldie McDuck)
OK, that’s an efficient church!
Those who are observant will recognize the church workers as O’Brien, Quinn, and Nell Campbell (AKA “Little Nell”). We’ll be discussing them later. For now, we go to the expository section of the film, narrated by “the Criminologist” (played by Charles Gray, who played Blofeld in a number of James Bond films)
…and has no fucking neck!
The Criminologist explains that, after getting engaged, Brad...
ASSHOLE!
...and Janet...
SLUT!
...decided to visit their old friend and former professor Dr. Everett Scott. He then foreshadows that the night is going to be memorable, but not in the way they’d hoped.
Speaking of the lovebirds, they’ve gotten hopelessly lost. Even worse, Brad’s car gets a blowout! Brad remembers passing a castle.
Castles don’t have phones, asshole!
Brad and Janet trudge through the rain to the castle. As the weather worsens, music starts to swell…
youtube
(Thanks to Gothic Witch Chick)
(Quick note: Susan Sarandon had pneumonia during filming. Props to her for doing this number in the rain in her condition)
Does the castle have what they need or is this the end for the happy couple? Tune in for Part 2 and find out!

✍️💞🏷️🌦️📝 For the ask game, maybe both for Codz and Mst3k perhaps?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HI @shinmiyovvi IVE GOT ANSWERS FOR THESE FINALLY!!! I’m gonna put it behind a cut just because it’s long, but HERE WE GO!!!
So first up we’ve got Call of Duty Zombies, and my always beloved Edward!
✍️: Overall, how does the fandom trait you? Are you a beloved character, or hated? Are you popular, or a minor side character? Anything in between?
I hope the fandom traits me well… I’ve already seen what happens when they don’t lol. Hopefully I’d be relatively popular, considering I’m stuck in with the main crews.
💞: Aside from with your f/o, who else would you commonly be shipped with? Why?
UH. EXCELLENT QUESTION LOL. Maybe Takeo???
🏷️: What is you and your f/o’s ship name?
Fox and Bun! Or The Fox and The Bun in longer form lol. I’m the fox, he’s the bunny!
🌦️: Would you be accompanied by mostly fluff or angst fanfics? Both? Explain why.
Ooh, good question… hopefully fluff! I’m not and angst type of person- I’m the one that hopefully brings a little bit of light to the whole situation, and I hope that it would translate into how others perceive me.
📝: How would your story in canon go? How would you influence the events of the original story?
UM. I haven’t actually thought a whole lot about me being in their story, honestly. I spend so much time with my modern AU that I haven’t thought about it the other way around! BUT- I’m definitely an American, warped from my modern day back to their time and universe, and stumbled upon by the ultimis crew. I carry on with them on their adventures until the primis crew comes across us, and through thorough convincing I tell them to ignore the stupid fucking book and work together to defeat the real problem. Oh yeah and the Richtofens fall in love with me of course lol.
AND NOW- Mystery Science Theater 3000, and my sweet Mikey Moo!
✍️: Overall, how does the fandom trait you? Are you a beloved character, or hated? Are you popular, or a minor side character? Anything in between?
I really hope I would be trained well… I’d kinda have to be a main character by design, so I really hope I’d make a good impression on the fandom.
💞: Aside from with your f/o, who else would you commonly be shipped with? Why?
OH IVE GOT AN IDEA FOR THIS LMAO. I’m gonna say either Dr. Clayton Forrester or Observer! (he’s also nicknamed Brain Guy lol)
🏷️: What is you and your f/o’s ship name?
Space Age Love Song! (which is the title of a song by the band A Flock of Seagulls- huge thank you to @maninthebox242 for thinking of that!)
🌦️: Would you be accompanied by mostly fluff or angst fanfics? Both? Explain why.
FLUFF. Mike and I are both awkward little beans and that alone lends itself to fluff galore. Add in the fact that we’ve got two wisecracking little robots as roommates and that lends itself even more to the fluff!
📝: How would your story in canon go? How would you influence the events of the original story?
SO. A lot of this isn’t gonna make much sense without knowing the backstory of the show, but I’ll give the cliffsnotes version lol- after Dr. Forrester’s assistant leaves him, he’s in search of a new assistant, which is where I come in. I’m mostly in the background though, so Mike doesn’t see much of me during his communications with Clayton. It’s only when Clayton’s mother Pearl starts to come around that trouble starts to happen. She thinks my presence is softening her son, and despite his protests, she takes it upon herself to send me up to the Satellite of Love to be a part of the MST3K experiment. This is when Mike and I first properly meet, and we almost immediately start harboring tiny little crushes on each other. Of course, Crow and Servo are in complete disbelief over this lol. But as we spend more time on the SoL together, we grow closer too. And the little crushes turn into big crushes lol.

So funny to me that the camera in MST3K is canonically its own character. Cambot is always the first name in the "robot roll call" bit of the theme song. He's been there for every episode but he never appears on-screen because he's behind the screen because he's the camera. The one character who is as much an observer of the episode as you, the viewer, are.

MST3K/ Cattrall Watch: City Limits (1984) Watched: 09/29/2023 Format: MST3K on YouTube (keep circulating the tapes?) Viewing: First Director: Someone, I'm sure In my quest to catch the entirety of the Kim Cattrall filmography without it becoming a thing, I finally got around to the episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (S5:E3) in which Joel and the Bots watch the 1984 sci-fi opus City Limits. You will guess from the fact it is not just an episode of MST3K, but from observing that a 1984 movie made its way to MST3K in 8 years that maybe this was not a movie that was in high demand, perhaps due to the fact it's a low-budget mess of a movie. Weirdly, the movie features a number of known humans, begging the question: what was happening in 1984 for each of these people? The movie features: James Earl Jones Rae Dawn Chong (on the poster above) John Stockwell (the guy from Christine and Top Gun) Dean Devlin for some reason John Diehl (many things, including Miami Vice) and, of course, Kim Cattrall And Robby Benson who was in stuff I've never actually seen It feels like the movie happened to be a way station for actors on their way up or down. I won't guess further as to whom was heading up or down, but you can do the math. It's mostly weird to watch yet another 1980's no-budget post-apocalyptic movie but you actually recognize half the cast. Anyway - I won't even really get into what it is or is about. Because Jamie and I had to piece together what was happening in a pause-the-movie moment about 2/3rds of the way through. This movie is now famous mostly for spawning the Kim Cattrall bit on MST3K as someone on staff (I assume Trace Beauliue) was clearly a fellow appreciator of the actor. It does help if you've seen Mannequin. I mean, not just to appreciate the sketch, but in life in general. https://ift.tt/86Aa7qb via The Signal Watch https://ift.tt/Oysb5H1 September 30, 2023 at 11:47PM

Getting back to watching/re-watcing season 8 of MST3K for fanfic note-taking, and I think it just gave me my favourite dialogue exchange about the butterfly effect.
For context, Bobo fell into a wormhole when he went out into space to pee.
PEARL: Let's get in there and get that monkey.
BRAIN GUY: May I ask why?
PEARL: What happens if Bobo causes one of them weird numbers where he goes back in the past and steps on a butterfly or something, and then 'cause of that, mammals as we know them never evolve, and then because of that, mankind never invents slot machines, and my favorite hobby goes straight down the toity, huh?
BRAIN GUY: Your logic is irrefutable.
