Dutch Van Der Linde x Female Reader

A/N: Heyy, this is my first one shot I've written and I've decided to post it here since I'm new to Tumblr. I'm currently writing a few fanfics rn so I'm not new to writing. I'm also currently obsessed with Red Dead Redemption 2. I'm obsessed with John and Dutch atm so yeah. Anyway you can read this one shot now :)

Warnings: Mentions of passing out and there's only one curse word. (Idk what else to warn but these r just in case)

Dutch and you were a reading book while cuddling in his tent. You guys were enjoying the peace and quiet for about an hour until you got bored of reading.

You shut your book and set it down on the table next to you then Dutch realizes you put your book down and looks at you. "You bored?" Dutch asked. "Yeah," You replied.

You sat up, about to get up but then you heard footsteps approaching. It was Hosea. "Hey, I was wondering if you guys wanna get out of camp for a little and go fishing?"

"Sure, I do need a break from camp. Y/n, wanna come with?" Dutch asked you. "Obviously," You giggled. You loved going fishing with Dutch and Hosea. Hosea was like a father to you. You didn't really have a father growing up since your father died when you were 4.

You guys mounted up and headed to a fishing spot that wasn't to far from camp. (Your at Clemens Point Camp)

Dutch, Hosea and you laughed a lot about past memories as you were riding to the fishing spot.

As soon as you got there, trotting down the shoreline, you looked for a boat.

"I saw some boats around last time. Be good to get to deeper water." Hosea mentioned.

You continued down the shoreline until you found some boats.

"I'm sure nobody will mind if we barrow one of these." Hosea added.

Everyone gets off their horses and pushes the boat into the water. While Dutch was rowing, you were seated across from him so that he could see you, and Hosea's back was turned to face Dutch's.

Dutch rowed to deep water and you all started fishing.

"Alright, This should be a good spot, Good luck Y/n and good luck to you too Hosea." Dutch says while looking at you then turning around to Hosea.

"Ah ha! I gotcha!" You yelled when you caught a fish.

"Good Job, Y/n." Hosea spoke.

As you were fishing for one last fish, Dutch spoke.

"Hey, Y/n, Remember that time, a few years ago, when Hosea was drunk at camp and thought you were someone new and tried hitting on you." Dutch laughed.

"Oh, yeah, That was so funny!" You giggled.

"Did that really happen? I don't remember much since I was drunk every 5 seconds that year." Hosea questioned.

"Yes, I remember it." You laughed.

"It was honestly really funny because I came out of my tent and there you were trying to hit on her." Dutch laughed.

"Anyways, I think we should head back. It's getting late." Hosea mentioned.

"True, I'll row back to shore." Dutch agreed.

You listened to Dutch and Hosea singing songs while heading back to the shoreline. You didn't know much of the words to the songs they sang so you just listened, enjoying your time with them.

You all got back on your horses and rode back to camp.

You started to feel uneasy as you rode back to camp. Your head started throbbing even though you attempted to ignore it since you thought you had nothing more than a headache.

After a few minutes, you had to stop. Dutch was talking to Hosea about something that didn't have anything to do with you so you was listening.

As Dutch turned his head a quick second to look at Hosea, he noticed you had stopped.

"Hey, Hosea, Stop a second." Dutch said worried.

You had your head down on your hands as Dutch hurried over to make sure you was okay.

"Hey, Darlin' What's wrong? Are you okay?" Dutch spoke in a soft voice.

You were breathing heavily since you felt you were going to pass out.

"It's just my head is like pounding for some reason and I feel like I might pass out." You spoke.

"You'll be okay, Let's just get you back to camp. Come here, it's okay." Dutch spoke in a soft tone as he picked you up, bridal style, and put you on the back of his horse.

Hosea made sure your horse followed you three back to camp as you rode on the back of Dutch's horse.

You hugged Dutch tightly as you lied your head on his back.

"Hey, I don't feel so-" You said before you fainted.

You fell of the back of Dutch's horse after you fainted.

"SHIT!" Dutch shouted, forcing his horse to stop immediately.

"Oh god, I hope she's okay." Dutch sitting you up.

"Don't worry, Dutch, She'll be okay," Hosea said while trying to comfort Dutch

When you fell off Dutch's horse, you weren't that far from camp so Dutch and Hosea quickly got you back to camp.

As Dutch rode into camp, he yelled for Miss Grimshaw since she helped out when people were sick or didn't feel good.

"What's wrong? I heard my- Oh my, What's happened?" Miss Grimshaw questioned.

"Y/n said her head was pounding and she didn't feel good then she passed out and fell off my horse on the way here." Dutch explained.

"Okay, just lay her down for now, I gotta grab something." Miss Grimshaw explained.

Dutch and Hosea helped get you into Dutch's tent and then Miss Grimshaw walked back over.

"Is she going to be okay?" Dutch asked worried.

"Well, I assume so, She probably just passed out from anxiety or stress. If she does keep passing out then I'd suggest maybe going to the doctor but she's probably fine. Don't worry." Miss Grimshaw explained as she got up.

Dutch sat next to you until you woke up since he was worried.

After about 30 minutes, you woke up.

You opened your eyes slowly, not remembering what happened.

"W‐What happened?" You asked Dutch

"Oh my, Thank god. You just passed out, My dear. How do you feel?" Dutch asked.

"The back of my head kinda hurts." You replied.

"Oh, yeah, That might be because you fell off of my horse when we were riding back." Dutch explained.

Dutch kissed your hand as Jack walked up to you and Dutch.

You treated Jack as if he was your own child. You always loved hanging out with him and so did he.

"Hello, uncle Dutch, is Y/n okay?" Jack asked Dutch.

"Yes, She's okay." Dutch patted Jack's back.

Jack got up on Dutch's lap and talked to the both of you for a while until he got bored and went to find Abigail.

You smiled at Dutch since you thought he was really cute with kids.

"Why are you lookin' at me for?" Dutch gave a soft smile.

"Nothing, I just think you look cute with kids." You answered.

"If you think that then we could have our own." Dutch winked.

"Oh, shut it," You laughed.

You both looked at each other and smiled.

"I love you," Dutch spoke in a soft tone.

"I love you too," You replied with a soft voice.

they're- everything to me. fucking evrything. they're two stinky little boys born in florida, raised by the sun (and Evans mom) and they skate and r the blueprint irresponsible teenage boys and they are so soppingly in love with each other it's disgusting, really.,,, barty is a possum that fell in a bucket because to say that this boy is a wet cat is an understatement. (boy's feral) he gets into fights with other kids no problem but when he hurts evan accidentalyl?? BArty cries. i just- fuck i love them so much. most of this is already written too but i'm struggling a bit with the scnene before the ending one so im just ._. atm

also this shit is riddled with dominic fike references 1 because ant pile is his song and 2 i'm simply obsessed with that man, that's also who evan is built upon in this one. for example in Dark dominic sings "Do you remember when Alex [his youger brother] had no front teeth" and this is something i've written for ant pile:

Playing with Barty is so fun– and they’re boys, they’re rough. Bleeding knees and elbows and noses. Ripped clothes, shredded skin, broken bones.  The first time Barty accidentally hurts Evan Barty cries. He knocks out Evan’s two front teeth and he has a lisp for a whole while but it’s okay because they’re only his baby teeth and they also threaten the other kids that are trying to make fun of him for it. Yet Barty still sobs as Evan gurgles with laughter around the blood and spit pooling in his mouth.  They have a sleep-over on the following weekend and Barty sniffles pathetically into a spare pillow as Evan tongues at his gap with a silly expression to make him stop crying.

1. that one scene in k3g where that guy asks poo to go to the movies and she goes “tell me how it waaaassss!!!” i’m so obsessed with how she says it. i’m not joking when i say that i play that clip on loop sometimes. it’s so good. i love her dearly.

3. while watching k3g i was explaining the singing voice overs and stuff to my dad and said something about how shreya goshal does a ton of them and then later while listening to ye ishq hai i looked at the credits and realized holy shit. this is also shreya goshal. she’s everywhere. (which is fair actually because her voice is gorgeous)

It's been a while since the single weekly wrap up post I made, but apparently this week is the week it's starting back up with the intention of it actually being a weekly wrap up, not just a random post I make once every few months. So with a rebrand (does it count as a rebrand if I only did it once before?) and renewed enthusiasm, here we go!

Reading

I've been banging on about wanting to read The Goldfinch for months to the point of my friends getting sick of me talking about it, but this week I finally started it. I watched the film when it came out so I vaguely know the story, but I'm not sure how that translates into an 800+ page book, so we'll see what happens. Even though it's not a stereotypical autumn read like The Secret History, I'm still getting the autumn vibes and enjoying it so far.

Watching

The Star Wars education is ongoing, and I'm nearing the end of the films and tv shows and I don't know how to feel about that (will probably have a breakdown when it happens, but we'll see). I'm juggling a few series atm; season 4 of Clone Wars is hotting up and getting super intense, I've only got the second half of The Mandalorian to go and I'm so so excited to see how it pans out and then watch the trailer for season 3, and I watched the first 3 episodes of Andor yesterday and omg I loved it! Can't wait to see where the rest of the season goes because at this point I have no clue what's going to happen next.

In non-Star Wars related news, I've picked up Gilmore Girls again for the autumn vibes, and it's proving to be a good accompaniment to craft in the evenings. I also started Bee and Puppycat which is whimsical and fun and charming and all round delightful.

Listening

Audible enticed me back with a deal for 99p a month, so we're back on audio books for the next few months. I've started Know my Name by Chanel Miller, and it's already so intense and heartbreaking. I know it's going to be a difficult listen, but all the more important for it.

I've randomly started listening to Scouting for Girls this week for the first time in years and I'm having a great time. It sends me straight back to summers out in the car with my mum and sister, the first 2 albums on repeat for weeks on end and being told off for saying 'arse' in Heartbeat, no matter how much I argued that I was just singing along.

Playing

After months and months and a few futile attempts to pick it back up, I am obsessed with Breath of the Wild again. After finishing Disco Elysium (an excellent unhinged game, please go play it) I was in a bit of a lull and just turned to it because I didn't have anything new lined up and oh boy am I enjoying myself. I've been sending daily updates to one of my friends about which towers I've unlocked and what quests I'm doing and I'm having an excellent time. Will this mean I finish it ready for Tears of a Kingdom? Probably not but we move.

Making

So I finished crocheting my cardigan a couple of months ago and now I'm onto my second one for my sister. I've got some much nicer yarn this time and it's so much better to work with. I spent a lot of time on it during the long weekend (thanks Lizzie!) and should be on track to get it finished in time for Christmas.

My nan's posh family friends are downsizing and we've got a load of their stuff they were going to throw out, including an old KitchenMate mixer! I'm so excited, I'm going to make a lemon cake at the weekend and see how it goes, but I can't wait to feel like I'm on Bake Off :)

Working on

I've nearly finished the book for my LM2, the second exam in my Cert CII so I'm hoping to sit the exam in October. I'm a month behind what I planned, but a busy summer made for very little motivation to study outside of work hours.

Over the past couple of weeks I've started watching booktube again and I've been toying with the idea of reviving my channel. I've already got a few ideas for videos and a couple of days off coming up, so stay tuned...

18 yo. (my birthday is in May)

I'm going into my first year of college in the fall (oh lord).

My favorite color is either black or pink. It's a tie. (I know two different ends of the spectrum)

I graduated high-school this year (2021)

I work at cRAckEr BArrEL in the little shop they have at the front. (it's quite fun ngl. I get payed $10 an hour sometimes thats not enough to deal with ppl's shit and sustain how much I spend.)

I've only had one other job and it was at Kohl's (good lord that place gives me bad dreams).

I have like 4 friends and they all live at least 45 min+ from me same with online friends. (I'm lonely give me attention.)

I live in Texas were it's as hot as the Devil's anus iykyk. It's usually around 90 degrees on a regular basis. They all of a sudden it will be 2 degrees in the middle of spring. (Don't move here -1/10 do not recommend.)

It took my three ½ years to get my official driver's license and when I did it expired without me knowing and I drove with an expired license for a month. (BUT, I didn't get pulled over!)

I'm a SSB™  (simp since birth). I simp for a number of fictional characters such as, Mobius (that's obvious), Geralt of Rivia, Will Graham, Loki, Obi-Wan Kenobi (that one's slightly embarrassing), and others I don't remeber atm.

I have only started to gain confidence to post what I write on here. I will be making a request page for you guys to make requests on.

I've been writing fanfiction since I was a wee little 12 year old. Yes, I know, gross. I was really into Doctor Who fanfiction at that time. I wrote everything on paper cuz I didnt have a phone. (My parents found it recently. I almost "yeeted" myself out a window.)

very artistically-inclined. his parents (especially his mom) placed greater emphasis on self-expression and creativity than education while he was growing up, which greatly shaped the man he is now. he’s been painting for longer than he’s been reading, so you could say it’s his most ~refined~ skill

but he’s also been dancing and acting for a while, too. initially trained in contemporary dance, but he’s more interested in hiphop now! also super into singing... i’ll just say this: if it’s creative/artistic, he’s into it! does have a tendency to spread himself too thin and has always been this way, so while he has various skills, he lacks a specialization.

used to be really promising. claimed that he was going to be a star and everyone believed it. unlike most kids, he had a very clear plan and was headed in the right direction. plus, he was well-known in the community, well-liked. very respectable kid

perhaps his parents gave him the wrong impression bc he ended up dropping out of high school and he was like “haha you told me education wasn’t that important” and they were like “we didn’t think you’d drop out??!?!”

and then things started going downhill because he kept traveling to auditions and participating in online auditions as well for all kinds of companies (modeling agencies, acting agencies, idol agencies bc mf didn’t know exactly what he wanted to do, still kind of doesn’t) and most of the time he was able to pass the blind round but every time agents found out he’s a hs dropout, they put a strike through his name.

ended up FINALLY getting an offer in early 2020-ish but was told he’d have to relocate to seoul and, as it turns out, junkyu’s a fuckin coward. didn’t want to leave his people so he turned it down much to..... Everyone’s dismay

now he’s working part-time as a cashier / sales associate / whatever at graciegrace! wants to work full-time, but atm he’s stuck begging his coworkers to give him some shifts and upselling like crazy to try to prove that he!!!! deserves to be a full-time employee!!!!

yes it’s the most expensive store on the island... yes he only works there because he needs that employee discount... yes he wears exclusively graciegrace clothes while he’s on shift and nonchalantly strikes poses like he’s a fuckin model while he’s supposed to be cleaning the shelfs and organizing displays... mind ur business!

his parents don’t really like him atm because he had Such A Bright Future and now he’s a retail worker, so he’s living on his own which means he needs money even more bc he doesn’t have his parents to leech off of. if not to feed himself, then to feed his trio of hamsters. so he sells artwork as a side hustle

mainly commissioned stuff bc if he just painted what he wants to, it would be anime girls sipping lemonade by the pool and no one would buy any of his pieces, so. gotta give the people what they want..... he likes to work in a ~dreamy~ kind of style with pastel color schemes, but he’ll rly do whatever if he’s getting that coin

junkyu’s obsessed with anime. started watching it shortly before he dropped out of hs, got really into it as a method of escapism after he dropped out and realized that life is hard. 9/10 times, if he’s meeting someone for the first time, he’s going to compare them to some background character from a niche anime that only nerds like him would know. i’m Personally not an anime fan so i can’t provide examples but jus take my word for it

kind of speaks japanese? he’s been studying it for a few years because he wants to watch anime without subtitles and he’s...... decent, but not fluent by any means

currently has hot pink hair because (1) he wants to and (2) he’s matching with an anime girl he likes atm.... guess who she is

obsessed with all things pretty/cute. buys a lot of sweets simply for the packaging which he REALLY needs to stop doing because he doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, so they usually go to waste. collects stuffed animals, not afraid to admit it. will go crazy any time he sees a cat, dog or any other soft animal that will let him pet it. 

his wardrobe’s full of pink, his home is full of pink, his phone case is pink, his favorite pair of sneakers is pink. kind of shocking to anyone who’s just getting to know him because who the fuck can see SO MUCH of one color and not get sick of it... junkyu! that’s who!

still wants to be involved in the entertainment business, kinda too scared to leave so these days he’s planning on opening up a theater in town. except apparently there are certain qualifications you have to have and..... Money’s Involved..... so he’s currently working towards a ged, don’t ask him about it

has a ton of random luggage and packed boxes in his house bc he’s lowkey always thinking about leaving, just doesn’t really have the guts to actually do it.

doesn’t believe in cringe culture, which on one hand is good for him but on the other hand, bad for everyone else. kinda hard to handle sometimes because you want to think he’s joking when he acts the way he does, but he never is.

seems like an ~elegant artist~ when you see him from a distance, which is admittedly very intentional. dramatic, always thinking that people who might happen to spot him should fall in love with him immediately so he tries to be Oddly Mesmerizing in everything he does. the illusion always breaks when he opens his mouth.

goes for a run every single morning! if you live on starden island and happen to be an early bird, you’ve probably seen him far more often than you’d ever want to.

hey! i'm Casper, 21, from the UK. i'm a poet and a writer and this blog is half studyblr, half writeblr. i'm studying English Lit and Creative Writing at the Open University but considering switching the English Lit to Philosophy.

Day 2- If you’ve chosen a major, why did you decide on it? If you’re in any other grade , what field/major interests you the most?

we don't have majors in the UK but i chose the degree mainly because of the creative writing modules, mainly because i want a degree but i adore creative writing and know that the jobs im likely to end up in wont rely on a degree. i'm considering switching to philosophy because i've studied english lit so much over my life and philosophy has always been frustratingly inaccessible to me past my obsession with jean-paul sartre

Day 3- Have you done a challenge before? If so, how was it? If not, what are you expecting to get out of this experience?

not really! i used to on my witchblr but it's been a long time. i really just want to connect with other people - pandemic timez are isolating as hell.

not currently researching and no idea what topic i'm most passionate about in terms of creative writing. in english lit i just really like looking at genre trends compared to real life big situations, and in philosophy im mad for existentialism.

Day 8- International Women’s Day! What’s your take on feminism?

i wont be discussing my views bc this isn't a discourse blog but. intersectional feminism is where it's at, white feminism is bullshit, terfs/swerfs/radfems can fuck off and stfu, men's issues need to be included in feminism because a) some men are trans and were socialised as female therefore still experienced sex-based oppression from an early age, b) if feminism means all genders being treated with equity in mind and gender based discrimination disappearing, then that means ALL genders (of course, men are still the most privileged gender and it's mainly them that perpetuate the issues feminism tries to address but we can't just be like 'hurr hurr women's rights' and not look at this from a rational and critical perspective). its a complex subject and gender privilege needs dismantling at the same time as other oppressive structures like class and racial hierarchies do, because they all feed off of one another.

Personality: the first thing people notice about me is that I am less of a feeler and more of a thinker. I do have an IQ of 125, but my emotional intelligence is quite low, so I have trouble sympathizing with others. But I learned through experience, so I don’t SEEM emotionless. I can (and will) help my friends through tough times if they need me. I’m pragmatic, so I always go for the facts instead of the feelings during decision making or tough situations. I hold a lot of perfectionist traits that make it really hard for me to be satisfied with my results if they aren’t higher than the norm. I also have a slight issue with saying no, so sometimes I’ll offer my help or enrol myself in long-term projects while knowing I legit do not have time for more stuff on my schedule. Being a bit smarter than average, I sometimes feel like I’m obligated to help others so that they can do good too (however, I do like helping people with their hw to a certain extent). I’m working on those issues though!! I was going through my files and I came over this document I sent to my friend @distant-rain pretty much the same day I realized I had fallen in love with Arthur, after weeks of being in denial or shrugging off my daydreaming of this cowboy as nbd or thought experiments and boy was I confused. 

I knew next to nothing about RDR1 when I wrote this December last year and I didn’t know much about RDR2 post chapter 2 either except for Arthur’s fate, which I had just learned of, and oml was I upset and confused. Though also scaringly accurate about certain things.

Now over six months later, I love this cowboy even more. And I kept true to my word. If anyone wanna read the rambings of a fangirl who had just found her new obsession be my guest.

I was blown away by how massive this game is. The level of detail is incredible and I greatly appreciate the effort put into creating this world. Yeah, we��ve all heard about the horse testicles shrinking in cold weather but it’s not like it’s just one bizarre detail being essentially a dick joke in an otherwise average game. No, RDR2 is detailed enough that it actually makes sense to add in peculiarities like that. The amount of wildlife alone, I mean, ever since the PS2 era I’ve been used to seeing animals in games but R* created whole-ass ecosystems in RDR2, several of’em, from snowy mountains to marshlands, with animals that act so much like actual animals. Just listening to the birds singing, it’s like being out in an actual forest!

Characterization is another thing that amazed me, in particular the protagonist. I knew nothing about the first RDR when started playing RDR2, nor did I know anything about RDR in general other than it was western-themed and made by the GTA-guys. I expected somewhat of a similar characterization as GTA where every character is a stereotype or a caricature. I genuinely liked GTAV’s story for what it was and even though every character was more or less an asshole, some of them were also weirdly likeable and even earned my sympathy (and hint of affection) occasionally.

But it never really went deeper than that nor was it particularly long-lasting (still way more than I expected tho). I bonded with one of the characters more than I thought I would but not nearly as much as I would had the characters felt more like actual humans and not like the epitome of stereotypes. But it is what R* wanted and it worked. I expected the RDR2 characters to be the same but to my surprise the characters, especially Arthur, are fleshed out, complex, even relatable (depending on your actions I guess). Unlike GTAV, they act and react like actual human beings. Well, human beings that have lived their entire life (more or less) as outlaws. In a country and time period foreign to me. But still they felt human. Ofc I’ve not gotten to know any of the NPC’s as well as Arthur but from various missions and eavesdropping on their conversation I’ve gotten to know them a bit. Hosea is my favorite. He seems like a good man despite being an outlaw and I love how everyone goes to him for advice and how supportive he is. I also wish more people (esp a certain Dutch man) could listen to him more. I also really like Charles. He definitely got morals and could be a good influence on Arthur and the others. I haven’t seen much of Sadie yet, but think I’ll like her too. Lenny seems nice. That one scene when he and Arthur went out drinking together was absolutely brilliant! And lil Jack’s adorable ofc. Only one I don’t like is Micha or Miach or whathisname. I know no one in the van der Linde gang are saints but that guy is a total psychopath. I kinda wish Arthur had gotten his way there when he said they should just leave him in jail as he was nothing but trouble and it annoys me how Dutch is sticking up for him. Yeah, speaking of, not too fond of Dutch or that German guy either atm.

But all in all very impressed by the large open world, the level of details to well, everything and the characterization. Soundtrack is great, graphics are stunning, animations smooth, the horse-riding simulation is just extraordinary and you never know what’s gonna happen as you ride through the map. The amount and variety of random events and encounters are truly impressive. Often comical, like that wildlife photographer who keeps getting almost eaten up by the wildlife he’s trying to document, sometimes eerie like the serial killer side story, or sad like when Arthur met with his former love. Or a combination of said elements like the pig farmers I ran into. With no pigs. But were still veeery well fed. You know, when people are just a liiitle bit too friendly? That eerie feeling you get when you just know something’s wrong but you can’t quite put your finger on it. Until you can. I thought they were husband and wife I really did. You shoulda seen my face when I realized they were in fact brother and sister. Me and Arthur had the exact same face. They were living as husband and wife tho. Well, up until I killed them.

I also love the contrast between the more ‘modern’ world and the simpler life. I could go into town, buy food at the saloon and rent a room or take a bath at the hotel. Or I could ride a few mins out into the wilderness, hunt and gather my own food, cook it over a bonfire and sleep under the stars. Electricity exists, but people are still completely dependent on oil lamps and open flame. Trains and trams exist, cars have been invented, but people still mainly travel on horseback. This contrast between old and new as an era is ending and the modern era is about to begin has been an amazing experience considering the level of detail the game has. The colonization of the new land, which has been largely unknown to me, the contrast between this and modern-day America we see on TV. So many people did not even speak English, I often find abandoned buildings, or burnt-down buildings, some with bodies inside, leaving me wondering what happened to them, I found a ghost town whose inhabitants had been wiped out by a plague. It was tough for many I reckon.

In fact, I find the exploration of this foreign but also somewhat familiar, beautiful but harsh world and its many random events and encounters waaay more interesting than the actual main story itself, which is why it took me forever to reach chapter 3. In fact, the story is probably my least favorite part about RDR2, as backwards as it may sound. I’ve never been into western stories or aesthetics, and I’m certainly NOT into the whole ‘outlaws till the end’ stuff ugh. I fail to sympathize with the whole ‘boo-hoo the world no want outlaws like us no more it’s unfair’. Ugh, go cry me a fucking river. And then go get a job. A real job. Yeah, I get it that adapting to society is tough, life’s tough deal with it and stop preying on others. Wow, robbing two trains in short time and staying in the same fucking area actually has consequences, I’m so shook!

So yeah, story-wise I don’t quite ‘get it’ and Dutch is really starting to get on my nerves, which is probably why I prefer to just ride off alone and experience the world. I guess RDR2 story will rely heavily on being torn between gang loyalty and your own morality and principles but since I have virtually no concept of group loyalty that is all lost on me. My own morals and principles all the way. I’m like, ‘these people suck, take Hosea, Charles, Sadie, Tilly (maybe John Marston and his family) and leave these bitches behind’.

At the beginning, I did kinda liked Dutch. He seemed genuinely sorry for Sadie, took her in and saved her life, even if it meant another mouth to feed in dire times. And he showed Kiran mercy despite hating the O’Driscol’s. But as I’ve progressed thought the game, his grand speeches about sticking together, sticking with him, slowly but surely has turned from pep-talk to keep people’s spirit up to sounding like a cult leader desperate to keep his following no matter the cost. Yesterday when I was playing, I overheard him quote some quasi-philosophy book to Lenny and used the words to twist them into his own convictions to support his decisions. And when Lenny objected, Dutch literally said ‘you’re breaking my heart, kid’. Wow Dutch, talk about manipulating your protégé.

It was the mission when those lawmen approached Arthur as he was fishing with Jack that really made me consciously see Dutch in a new light. Up until then, RDR2 had mostly been fun and games but that conversation left me feeling a bit uneasy. But I just figured it was the main story finally picking up pace and also, I figured I was near the end of the chapter. I carried on, suddenly eager to see what would happen and was thoroughly surprised by how the chapter ended. In a bad way.

While both chapter 2 and chapter 3 begins with a ‘new start’ vibe, chapter 3 felt very different from chapter 2. Mostly it was that feeling that Dutch’s obsession with ‘sticking to this life’ is going to get people killed. Idk, it’s this eerie feeling something’s wrong but can’t quite put my finger on it-feel again. But thanks to internet being internet I already knew some spoilers so I couldn’t help but to look up something and… well, let me put it this way. I’m never going to finish this game. Ever. It breaks my heart because in so many ways it’s truly an amazing game and a fantastic experience. But I’m just not that into the story, I don’t like where it’s heading and I don’t want to see what’s coming to character(s) I’ve come to care deeply about.

I still want to explore the world more, see what unfolds, do more challenges, add stuff to my compendium, maybe get some trophies… but I doubt I’ll ever progress much story-wise. Quite the contrary, I might reload an earlier save and just stay in chapter 2 forever.

Seems my instincts was right on the money, esp concerning Dutch. Sad thing, I do believe he is sincere. In the first few chapters at least. He is manipulative but I also believe he’s convinced himself that he’s doing the right thing. And then his obsession will eventually get the better of him and when people and the lifestyle is slipping away from him, he doesn’t handle it well at all. Ugh, it’s so frustrating, I just wanna gather all my favs and yell: “leave nooow, before it’s too late!

It’s not for the sake of spacing it out or making it last. I just don’t want to progress in the story at all. I hated losing Horseshoe Overlook. HATED IT HATED IT HATED IT!!!! Yes the new place is beautiful, yes I know it’s the life of the outlaws and RDR2 does show that life for better and for worse whereas most stories tend to romanticize the whole thing, yes as outlaws they can’t stay for too long in one place. But as mentioned I have a hard time sympathize with and immerse myself into that lifestyle. Yes, I got all my upgrades and a whole new area to explore, a bigger nearby town, and closer to that big city. Still hated it. Horseshoe Overlook was my place. The Heartlands was home. And the view was stunning! And I liked Valentine. It was small and dirty but I had good memories from there. Until I had to shoot up half the town. My motivation for continuing the main story is at absolute zero.

It was more what the transition represented, I guess. You never know what will happen in RDR2. And it’s true, for random encounters, and many of the individual missions. But when it comes to the story as a whole, I feel like I already now can predict how it’ll play out. Every chapter begins with the gang on the move, finding a place to settle down and have a fresh start, even chapter 1 (as they were on the run bc a heist gone wrong or something). Then they settle down, go into town to get to know the area and establish connections and looking for easy money, often at the expenses of others. X random events later, they get too overconfident or careless, screws up or get hunted down, it ends with a shootout, then they are on the run again, finds a new place to settle down where Dutch promises that THIS TIME IT WILL BE DIFFERENT until they’re wanted on the entire map and can’t go anywhere cos the wild west is ending. I really liked it at Horseshoe Overlook and whenever Im in that area again I’ll just get sad.

I had no idea I’d gotten so emotionally invested so I was really surprised at how much I disliked moving camps and all. I’ve also gotten so fond of Arthur. I was so busy with exploring, doing challenges, learning to hunt etc I didn’t even realize it happening. Until one scene had me almost tearing up! I think because, we as the player really have to look out for him. Even though I make sure that he eats regularly, he’s still underweight. When out riding I usually set up camp when night falls so that Arthur can get some rest. Something I’d never think about in any other game. And I always give him coffee in the morning. Then it’s his journal that gives such valuable insight into who he truly is as a person. There’s no doubt he’s so much more than just a mere outlaw. He writes surprisingly well and is open and is surprisingly honest about his thoughts and feelings. How torn he is between the life of an outlaw and wanting to be a better man, a better person. How he admired Charles because, for him it was ‘so easy to just be good’ whereas he himself always feel torn between good and evil. And his journal entries when he meets his long-lost love Mary and saves her brother from the cultists. The expression on his face as he said goodbye to her on the train station… how utterly heartbroken he was… how she still loved him too… man, that one tore at my heart. Still does when thinking about it.

I wish I could take Hosea, Charles, Sadie, Tilly, John’s family and maybe Lenny too with me, run off and start anew. Charles would have good influence on Arthur and encourage him to turn his life around and find his place in society and encourage John to be a better father and role model for Jack and they could all learn how to live as free men and women without robbing or hurting anyone (unless they deserve it). Like, Charles is an excellent hunter and tracker. He’d totally get enough food for the gang and maybe even enough to sell. He could train Jack too. Hosea was always more of a conman/grifter than a brute/robber. He could con bad guys or rich assholes Robin Hood style. If anyone gave him grief, John and Arthur would settle the score. Arthur could sell animal pelts and John could take up carpeting. They’d be such a happy lil family. But, RDR1 is yet to happen so it’s all just wishful thinking *sigh*
