Mark the date! Don't be late! Reposted from @themenageriealameda (@get_regrann) - Countess Elizabeth Bathory was part of the ruling family of Transylvania in the 16th century and was a serial killer. Rumors had been spreading about horrific happenings at the Countess’s home, Cachtice Castle, and when the authorities investigated they discovered young girls locked up, severely beaten or dead. The Countess was arrested and a trial was put together with hundreds of witnesses testifying to Bathory’s heinous acts of torture such as freezing or starving victims to death, covering one in honey and live ants, and biting the flesh off, which spurred accusations of cannibalism. The trial dictated the number of victims as being 80 with the thought that there were many more. Because of the grand scale of Bathory’s story, it has inspired embellishments over the years with the first re-telling of her story stating that she would wash with the blood of victims to retain youth. (Her victims were young girls) Although there was never any mention of such an act at her trial the story perpetuated her monikers, The Blood Countess and Countess Dracula. As a result of her wealth and power, Bathory was spared execution and imprisoned in the castle, in a room bricked save for small ventilations and a space for meal reception. Reposted from @themenageriealameda (@get_regrann) - During a period in the 1600’s it became popular for authors to write manuals to offer advice on marriage, sex, pregnancy and midwifery. In 1651 a manual on these subjects called Aristotle’s Masterpiece was published. The book was not written by Aristotle but written by a pseudo- Aristotle, an author who has taken the name for his own publication, a common occurrence at this time. While Aristotle’s Masterpiece provided detailed scientific information on anatomy such as the sex organs, it also refers to other sources such as witchcraft, religion, astrology and old wive’s tales such as virgins should not be allowed near salt of spices. The book devotes much to superstition and the birth of “monsters,” including many woodcut illustrations depicting these “monsters” (one of a man with a bushy dog’s tail). Speculations as to how to avoid giving birth to a monster such as “don’t have sex with animals “ “or don’t have sex while menstruating” were given. It is a theory that these “monster” images, thought that they are “begot by women’s unnatural lying with beasts,” were a factor that led to the book being banned in Britain until 1960.
