December is approaching! Goat yer tickets by tha balls! 🤣🐐🏀🏀🏨 Reposted from @themenageriealameda (@get_regrann) - Dr. John Brinkley gained notoriety in the early 1900’s for his invention of a male virility surgery which involved transplanting goat testicles into human male testicles. However, Brinkley had never completed medical school and his diploma had been purchased from a “diploma mill.” For the first clinic he opened, heavy adverts were mailed to homes imploring men who felt lacking in “manly vigor” to come receive a treatment, an injection, of a medicine called “electric medicine from Germany” to revive them. In reality Brinkley was injecting colored water into patients, charging them mightily. After his first goat transplant, Brinkley made an ad featuring the son his patient had conceived after the surgery and men and women began flocking to his clinic, women receiving goat ovary transplants for various ailments. Many people reportedly became sick or died after being treated by Brinkley. There were accounts of him performing surgeries in an unsterile environment, while intoxicated and without credentials. Even with the collected reports of fraud over the years, Brinkley was becoming famous and he decided to promote himself with staged surgeries for the press and running his own radio station. Brinkley’s showmanship and marketing ideas seemed to overshadow all the criticism over his career. Since we’re rocking our favorite goth bands here’s her love story: I don’t care how cliche it is, The Cure touched my soul by the 4th grade and ended up being my first concert in 6th grade. I used to listen to their albums on my Fischer-Price record player. My mom didn’t like them at all, she’s was okay with the b-52’s and Depeche Mode but she said I “changed” when I started listening to them. Maybe she meant I was spending too much time kissing my Robert Smith poster but I had always been a lover of the deeper and darker facets of life. Regardless of her disdain for them she ended up escorting my best gal friend and myself to the Oakland Coliseum for The Prayer Tour in 1989. She did this all with a broken foot. It’s one of my fondest memories and I still have the tour shirt. Don’t ask me to name a favorite album, I like them all, well at least up to Disintegration. Black Marble would be my new skool choice. Mark the date! Don't be late! Reposted from @themenageriealameda (@get_regrann) - Countess Elizabeth Bathory was part of the ruling family of Transylvania in the 16th century and was a serial killer. Rumors had been spreading about horrific happenings at the Countess’s home, Cachtice Castle, and when the authorities investigated they discovered young girls locked up, severely beaten or dead. The Countess was arrested and a trial was put together with hundreds of witnesses testifying to Bathory’s heinous acts of torture such as freezing or starving victims to death, covering one in honey and live ants, and biting the flesh off, which spurred accusations of cannibalism. The trial dictated the number of victims as being 80 with the thought that there were many more. Because of the grand scale of Bathory’s story, it has inspired embellishments over the years with the first re-telling of her story stating that she would wash with the blood of victims to retain youth. (Her victims were young girls) Although there was never any mention of such an act at her trial the story perpetuated her monikers, The Blood Countess and Countess Dracula. As a result of her wealth and power, Bathory was spared execution and imprisoned in the castle, in a room bricked save for small ventilations and a space for meal reception. Reposted from @themenageriealameda (@get_regrann) - During a period in the 1600’s it became popular for authors to write manuals to offer advice on marriage, sex, pregnancy and midwifery. In 1651 a manual on these subjects called Aristotle’s Masterpiece was published. The book was not written by Aristotle but written by a pseudo- Aristotle, an author who has taken the name for his own publication, a common occurrence at this time. While Aristotle’s Masterpiece provided detailed scientific information on anatomy such as the sex organs, it also refers to other sources such as witchcraft, religion, astrology and old wive’s tales such as virgins should not be allowed near salt of spices. The book devotes much to superstition and the birth of “monsters,” including many woodcut illustrations depicting these “monsters” (one of a man with a bushy dog’s tail). Speculations as to how to avoid giving birth to a monster such as “don’t have sex with animals “ “or don’t have sex while menstruating” were given. It is a theory that these “monster” images, thought that they are “begot by women’s unnatural lying with beasts,” were a factor that led to the book being banned in Britain until 1960.
