GOLDEN KAMUY x MARIO KART 8 DELUXE
a silly little post about what racer they'd choose if they played mario kart 8 deluxe (+ some headcanons)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SUGIMOTO
he'd 100% choose baby luigi . he thinks luigi is MUCH cooler than mario and he chose him as a baby because he thinks he'll go faster if tiny. he also always chooses the jet bike as the vehicle (what can i say it just looks like it goes very fast)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SHIRAISHI
HE WOULD ABSOLUTELY CHOOSE ROY . i mean look at his sunglasses he's clearly the coolest. shiraishi always gets the WORST items and when he finally gets a mushroom he ends up crashing against a wall or falling off the map
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ASIRPA
king boo . she LOVES choosing king boo and screaming BOOOOOO SUGIMOTO IM GONNA EAT YOU when she's behind him (she really does it with everyone but sugimoto is the one who gets scared the most because he genuinely thinks king boo can eat other racers). she just loves feeling like a menace and hitting other racers all the time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OGATA
WHAT CAN I SAY they have the same black void eyes and i think ogata relates to him in a very deep way. ogata SUCKS at drifting but he throws bananas, bombs and green shells like a pro (doesn't matter if the other racer is behind or ahead of him)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TANIGAKI
tanooki mario because inkarmat told him tanooki mario reminds her of him. he always ends up being the last one because he absolutely SUCKS at mario kart
Tumblr media Tumblr media
INKARMAT
100000% CAT PEACH . she's matching with tanigaki. she always drives extremely well and therefore ends up being one of the last ones with tanigaki (but theyre in the bottom 3 together)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
KOITO
BABY PEACH . he thinks peach is an absolute GIRLBOSS and like sugimoto he thinks she'll go faster as a baby. he can NEVER win against ogata because ogata somehow always has shells or bananas or bombs and throws most of them at koito no matter if he's behind or ahead of ogata
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TSUKISHIMA
toad . he didn't really know who to choose but koito INSISTED toad reminded him of toad and he thought choosing toad would be better than choosing the random option. he does NOT know what he's doing and tries to avoid the item boxes because he thinks they're obstacles for some reason. he sometimes ends up going THE OPPOSITE way but still manages to be in 11th place (just because tanigaki is worse)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TSURUMI
this man has his own mii (i made a mii just for him btw) . hes the kinda guy that has studied every object in the game and know how they all work and how to use them to win ... not a menace because hes a violent racer but because he just knows how to play
Tumblr media Tumblr media
USHIYAMA
HE'S DEFINITELY DAISY . my man ushiyama chooses the prettiest girl and THAT'S DAISY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think he's a pretty average mario kart player but sometimes he stops the vehicle because he accidentally pushes the backwards button (his fingers are too big, he thinks someone threw him a mysterious item that somehow stops the vehicle and he doesn't even notice he's the one doing it)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HIJIKATA
he thinks THE GAME gave him the character and he can't change it (he seriously believes he's stuck with mario but no one tells him because they all think he chose mario himself). despite that he's surprisingly good, not because he's a good racer but because he always gets triple red shells and annoys everyone with them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NIKAIDOU
his brother played wario (he will bite ANYONE who tries to pick wario) . he screams WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH in every jump or gliding part. he goes feral when he gets a superstar and starts hitting all the people he can
Tumblr media Tumblr media
KIRORANKE
YOSHI !!!!!!!!!!! ironically he SUCKS at throwing bombs and ends up hitting himself with them (he HATES when they're playing battle mode and it's Bob-omb Blast time). he's VERY bad at first but gets better after playing a few times if you ignore him hitting himself with his own items
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WILK
DRY BONES . hes a silly guy and picks the silliest guy !!!! a pretty average player methinks ... definitely laughs at every single person that gets hit with a shell but gets mad when hes the one that gets hit

Hello, I hope you having a good day! I was wondering if you could write about boys reaction if some bad guy hit their s/o in the face? With Ogata, Tsukishima and Sugimoto. (GK x Reader)
Of course, sorry for the wait
GK reacting to someone hitting their s/o
warnings: gn reader, violence (obviously)
Ogata would absolutely swing back at the guy and then immediately pull his gun on the guy. He would have this person begging for their life and apologizing before he tells them to get lost. Once the guy runs off he’ll check out the bruise on your cheek, laughing as he pokes at it.
Sugimoto would immediately see red and start going at the guy. He wouldn’t be content to just hit the guy back- no no no. He is trying to kill him. And he would’ve done it to if you didn’t pry him off the guy. He’ll gently tend to your wounds, apologizing for not being able to stop it from happening completely
Tsukishima is a simple man, he doesn’t anything to prove. He just… knocks the guy out before plainly asking you if you’re all right before you move on.

Man, it's been a long time! There are ads on here now? Jesus. I've come back briefly because a really kind person has bought me a kofi :) I cannot thank you enough <3 It will go directly to my kitty's treatment! Well, you said you wanted anything Ogata related, so i'll write some headcanons of...
·Ogata as your bodyguard:
---------------------------
-Honestly, why did he accept this job? Was it monetary reasons, was it an obligation? The most probable answer is that it's for his own benefit, for one reason or another.
-He doesn't really care about you. On the beginning. He makes it clear that he keeps you alive only for the sake of a succesful mission.
-Ogata will be kind of rough handling you on dangerous situations. Or, well, in situations in general. Anything from pushing you to avoid you getting shot, tug you out of someone's way, letting you fall down and trip as long as he knows you won't get badly hurt... He gives you a shit-eating smile when he sees you on the ground after you tripped on some branches...
-Oh, but he is the only person that will be able to handle you that way. Or any way. He is incredibly overprotecting (oddly enough for you) and won't let anyone even lay a finger on you. If you are ever with the group and sees, say, Shiraishi put his arm around your shoulder, he will harshly grip his wrist, twist it, give him a death stare and sternly warn: 'Do not touch them.'
-He will grow attached to you due time. In his own, traumatized ways. He denies it though.
-No matter your size, he will have no issue in picking you up and carry you if you are being stubborn or annoying and you need to go somewhere else. 'Such a pain..'
-'I'm a delivery boy.' 'YOU WOULDN'T DARE-'
-He is really manipulative on his ways of reminding you how weak and fragile you are. You need his protection, after all. What would you do without him? Die, most likely. You need him.
-Ogata will have no issue in killing for you. Actually- ask him to kill for you. Make him kill for you. He will, of course, assure you he only does it in order to keep you safe. He would skip the part of the thrilling sensation of his commintment towards you being so strong that he gets chills in knowing he is taking a life for your sake.
-He will constantly have his eyes on you. Maybe you don't see him. But he sees you.
--------------------------
Phew! I'm quite rusty, it's been a while since i've written anything! I hope these headcanons are of your liking, kind kofi donator <3 I'm glad you like my Ogata content! And to anyone reading this, have a great day :)
-Lettuce

Golden Kamuy Headcanon #2 – What kind of Geisha was Ogata Tome?
The only thing we know of Ogata Tome’s time as a geisha is that she worked at Asakusa. It was speculated by @goldenkamuyhunting that Ogata was born in 1882 (1, 2, 3). At that time, Asakusa had three kinds of geishas:
Hirokoji Geishas (広小路芸者) who worked in the areas of Asakusa Hirokoji (浅草広小路), currently Kaminarimon-dori Street (雷門通り), for the dengaku-chayas (田楽茶屋: teahouses selling tofu dengaku (豆腐田楽)) located there, hence the affectionate nickname Dengaku Geisha (田楽芸者).
Tumblr media
Saruwaka-cho Geishas (猿若町芸者) who worked for the shibai-jayas (芝居茶屋: teahouses working for theaters, serving spectators before a play or during the entr’acte) of the three kabuki theaters of Saruwaka-cho (猿若町), currently 6-chome Asakusa: Ichimura-za, Morita-za and Nakamura-za. The theaters had a cubic ornamental structure displaying their respective crests called yagura (櫓: watchtower, turret), positioned above the entrances, and since the activities of shibai-jayas took place under the latter, the geishas working there were also called Yagurashita Geishas (櫓下芸者).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From left to right: Ichimura-za, Morita-za and Nakamura-za)
Sanyabori no Geishas (山谷堀の芸者), commonly called Hori no Geishas (堀の芸者), who worked for the hikite-jayas (引手茶屋: teahouses serving the patrons of red-light districts before their appointments with brothels) of Sanyabori (山谷堀), the (no longer usable) canal leading customers to Yoshiwara by funayados (船宿: houseboats) which they also used to entertain the latter. Because they work close to Saruwaka-cho, they were sometimes placed in the same category.
Tumblr media
(reference: JP / EN)
Coincidentally, I found out about the existence of a kabuki actor named Sawamura Hyakunosuke (澤村 百之助) (1857 – 1899) who used to perform for one of the kabuki theaters of Saruwaka-cho (1, 2).
Also, while I was watching the OVA of the Battle in Barato Arc (chapter 56 – 59), I heard Hijikata call Ogata “Yagura ni iru Yatsu”, the “man in the [watch]tower”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, while Noda may not have implied on purpose, I like to believe that Ogata Tome used to be a Saruwaka-cho / Yagurashita Geisha.

★ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬: 𝟖𝟓𝟔 ★
勇作
“𝐌𝐚𝐦𝐚'𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠!?” 勇作, always fond of His mum’s cooking, knew that it does not matter how good the times may be, there can always be a moment of poverty or needs. War verified this and He was glad, glad that He never wasted no rice or drop of water. Young and still having a long way to learn, 勇作 cannot cook much. With each passing day, He is happy to learn more. Able to cook for Himself or two people at most, there will always be secrets He has not seen through. He admires anyone, who can prepare a fine cuisine or tea – because 勇作 favourite cultural thing is tasting tea. Possibly thanks to His grandparents. His early memory of studying contains getting home, spending His moments at His desk and gazing outside to the grayish sky above. It was His mum who came to call Him to a family dinner. And even if His father was away at the time, the manners that day went to the back. The rice, almost melting on His tongue, first sip of sake behind His father’s back! And His mum, smiling.
宇佐美
“𝐎𝐡, 𝐈– 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭! 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫!” 宇佐美 is the one to be more treated to a dish than treat to a dish someone else. Some may do such because They are scared of His nature or want to be sure not to get strangled in sleep, others, because They like His weird attitude. 宇佐美, however, out of this all just like the fact He gets a free dish. Unbeknownst to many, 宇佐美 might or might not handle the skill of a cook. Everyone can survive on Their own, but who knows? Perhaps, 宇佐美 comes and goes to get food the different way. And 𝐑𝐲𝐨𝐤𝐚𝐢𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐮, full of sureness, is not afraid to say that many of You would take Him home. His likeness of food goes towards horse meat, which is quite unusual, and Tsukisamu anpan. Care to combine it?
尾形
“𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠...” 尾形, unimpressed, not in particular mood to care nor starving, just comes here and there to say thanks and eat in peace somewhere in the corner. If someone was to mention the food that made His mind go swirl in spirals, He would either kill or snap. The Anglerfish hotpot. The food, tightly tied to 尾形’s life. 尾形’s skills contain cooking to some extent, but one should not really expect Him to treat anyone to a dish. Unless He wants to poison someone or He changes His views and open–mindedness towards people overall. And whatever, whatever – 尾形 likes hunting or getting the ingredients for cooking better than the process. Even when His mother used to cook the same Anglerfish hotpot everyday and everynight, even when 尾形 tried to bring her other animals to use instead, He could never forget. So sick of it, yet loving it much. The only memory of His childhood so vivid, so alive! As if that only moment in His life was the only sane part of Him, that still makes Him human. He might be afraid of tasting it, He might not want to go back.
鯉登
“月島 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞… 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭!” 鯉登 with His overachieving and prince–like nature had hard times understanding the real endeavor of life. One can get fame or status, one can learn to survive with a gun or a weapon of any kind. But to adapt, 鯉登 had to go through hardship of His family. Blame Him not, for what His father set as another generation standart. The expectations of His rear were more unnatural than what His mother could give Him. And so, 鯉登, left to ameliorate Himself to another step, was left to be taught by 月島. His food skills and mental state especially were to change. And who could tell that the boyish 鯉登 would be one of the few people to actually confess He’s ‘useless’ when it comes to food? Not anymore. Not after gathering strength. And with exploring comes the hold of treasure. To 鯉登, Tsukisamu anpan wass another spark to learn more and more. Soon, we might see Him prepare it in a luxurious state one would never imagine. The taste, the chocolate, the shift of 鯉登.
月島
“𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞.” 月島, the man that was there to get through, take care and finish things when it came to life. That came to taking care of food in the time of need as well. And despite 𝐑𝐲𝐨𝐤𝐚𝐢𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐮 not having the chance to taste anything, there is still the nod to that excellency of work from His side too. Hands that work like a machine, 月島 could go against nowadays Michelin star holders. With His skills and gourmets, there is nothing He would not eat nor try to taste – even prepare! With this comes the irritation when someone is wasting food or preparing dishes in the wrong order. And so, with the classic white rice, nothing can go wrong. Especially not in the hold of 月島. But, be aware when making Egoneri, You might not see it the other day.

My take on transfem Ogata (ramble under the cut, contains spoilers)
Ok so I thought of this HC a few weeks ago maybe? And now there's some discussions and fanart going around here on tumblr which prompted me to draw her
I usually go for a more canon compliant headcanon in which the egg does crack but she never comes out or transitions amongst all the chaos. I think she's always felt very disconnected from her body and sex but with all of the other shit in her life, it was always a bit of a background thought. I also think that since she's terrible with emotions and likes to assume others are like her, she thought this feeling (dysphoria) was a completly normal thing.
As I said though, the egg does crack, maybe when she was in the hospital after fighting Sugimoto, maybe after leaving the 7th. I must say that Ogata growing her hair because she felt liberated was like the most transgender thing ever.
My thoughts are very out fo order but regarding the art: these would be designs for a small AU where everything is the same except Ogata transitions. Maybe I do want to see her happy every once in a while. Maybe when she shaved and grew out her hair and wore a women's kimono she felt happy for once in her life.
I would tackle the "Ogata transitions and looks like her mother" but brother I am Not Ready. Something something the realization that she's more similar to her mother than she thought. Something something seeing her mother's ghost in her reflection-
Ran out of brain juice so some final notes: If you've noticed my pfp yes I am a lesbian Ogata truther // On the AU in which she transitions she threatens anyone who misgenders her at gunpoint

I identify Ogata as transmale in a "i completely rejected my mother's display of femininity and the men in my life taught me that as a man you can get away with everything and do as you please in this patriarchal and misogynistic society" kind of way

Gk charas' google history headcanons
Shiraishi
He definitely has gambling websites open, and you know he knows what he's doing when you find "gambling.com/this-is-not-a-scam-website-xoxo/".
Which is then followed by dozens of searches along the lines of "scammed by gambling website", "how to get money back after scam", "how to report gambling website".
Also various paid corn sites, good for him
He uses Quora and Yahoo Answers as a reputable source of information.
So many goddamn 9GAG pages.
Vasily
Tons of links on social media of art by his favourite artists.
And Twitch, he probably watches vtubers while he draws.
There are also lots of vids in his history of first person shooters.
Random wikipedia articles of highly specific phenomena that piqued his interest.
And drawing references. His search history even seems suspicious out of context with the poses he searches.
Saichi
Travel and tourism vlogs, followed by google maps searches.
Also, recipe blogs and videos.
He has compilation vids all over his watch history, whether its compilations of "Funny Fails 🤣🤣😂 LOL LMAO #TRENDING" or just a compliation of moments from a show or a game, even if he doesnt play the game or watch the show.
Random trivia google searches, mainly because he mightve seen something he didn't know and ended up googling it.
And then he falls down a rabbit hole of random trivia, ending up excitedly telling Asirpa all about it.
Asirpa
Definitely watches animal fail videos.
Probably gets addicted to Wordle.
Does Not Use Keywords When Googling to point it's a miracle that google can even interpret what she's saying. Who tf searches like "I put my shirt in the dryer and now it shrunk and now I want to know if I can reverse it".
Watches educational youtube channels about literally anything. She'll fall dowm that rabbit hole.
Secretly loves those online flash games but would never admit to it.
Ogata
It's fucking wiped clean, almost nothing is there.
He mostly just does typical ogata stuff like searching up really specific facts that could get the average person arrested for knowing.
And also cat videos :)
Oh and he most certainly does not use google, he opts for browsers that keep you super secure.
He probably has reddit just to spread misinformation honestly.
Koito
Tons of beauty guru channels definitely.
He also has a channel of his own which is also in his search history a lot.
Search history completely unorganized. Youll see pictures and vids he finds funny, links to online shopping sites, wikipedia articles on military icons and tactics, etc.
He also loves reading travel blogs and watching vlogs.
Is really fucking good at Wordle, Asirpa hates him for always being able to get it right.
Tsukishima
also has koitos yt channel in his search history.
Lots of miscellaneous journals and artciles open for him to read.
He has perused a lot through online libraries too.
Does crossword puzzles online.
Reads the fucking. News. Every day.
Tanigaki
Ngl probably wouldnt google many things, and if anything his search history would be few and far in between.
But when he does search its things its so normal ?? Like "XXL clothing store near me" and "How to repair a broken air conditioning unit".
Gym websites and workout routine stuff. He maintains his build and I gotta respect that.
Also has facebook to check in on how his family and friends are doing.
And also baking and cooking videos.

Ogata alphabet headcanons for @keioroni.
G — Gifts (What type of gifts do they give their s/o? Do they want a gift in return?)
Let's be real: if anything, it'll be something he shot.
I don't think gift giving is something he cares about at all, but if he does deign to present you with something, it'll be in the style of a housecat leaving a dead mouse on your pillow.
The gesture is half "got this for you" and half "look what I did, aren't I so capable and deadly? Head pats please."
(Appease his ego with a compliment or he'll sulk :p)
As for him... he wouldn't ask for anything, doesn't particularly care for gifts, but practical is the way to go with him.
Something he can wear like a new cloak, gloves, etc, or - if you really want to see a twinkle in his eye - a better rifle.
If he really likes you, he'll get attached to anything you give him, and he'll try to hang on to it even if it's not something useful.
S — Sleep (How do they sleep with their s/o?)
He's a man of extremes, I think, in many ways. He's got a measured kind of capriciousness that's hard to qualify, and he's just as much at the mercy of it as you are.
He either sleeps like the dead or barely at all, restless and awake all night.
Similarly, while he always wants you in the bed with him, he may choose to sleep as far away from you as possible or he may snuggle close enough to suffocate you. No in-between.
If it's a snuggle night, he'll basically use you as a body pillow - either laying almost completely on top of you with his face buried in the crook of your neck, or else on your sides with your chests pressed together and your head tucked under his chin (or vice versa).
He tends to end up shifting away from you after he falls asleep, though, so either way you're not likely to wake up trapped in his clutches.

after seeing some of your Ogata meta, I wanted to share an idea I had.
it starts with Yuusaku, and Ogata's paradoxical hatred/envy of him. in my mind, Ogata hates Yuusaku because he represents a privileged existence. one that their father granted to Yuusaku, while neglecting Ogata. they're like light and shadow. Yuusaku's purity has and will always frame him as an exception to the compromises that other people have to make... and it's not just in relation to Ogata. normal men compromise their morals during war, but Yuusaku is treated as though he's above everyone.
Ogata's position is that this isn't fair. but then, what should be the method of leveling the playing field? Yuusaku would rather bring Ogata into the light, and Ogata would rather drag Yuusaku into the dark. these are their attempts to become relatable to each other, but they'd have to fundamentally alter each other if they were ever going to see eye to eye.
when Ogata asks "was a blessed life ever possible for me?" he does tip his hand a bit. it sounds like he actually wants to have those blessings. meanwhile, Yuusaku was never enticed by the darkness. Ogata failed to prove that his way of thinking is inherently tempting... and when Ogata shoots Yuusaku, that 100% cements his ideological loss. Yuusaku's death ended his potential to change, and immortalized his purity forever. and Yuusaku left Ogata with a curse of his own: "nobody should be able to kill without feeling guilt."
Yuusaku died, and made it so. and with this background knowledge, here is what I'm really getting at.
at the end of their journey together, we see Ogata draw a clear parallel between Asirpa and Yuusaku. both are people who have an empathetic, sentimental urge to care about the lives of others... and they expect to try and maintain that moral framework, even in the midst of a conflict that seems to necessitate violence and death. in some ways, their dedication to these morals can come off as judgmental towards people who have ended up dirtying their hands already. early in their relationship, Asirpa and Sugimoto grappled with that.
I believe that, if Asirpa and Yuusaku are comparable, then Sugimoto and Ogata are contrastable in the same role... they've responded in opposite ways to the same offer. both consider themselves to be cursed, and they think of killing as sometimes necessary, but Sugimoto feels guilt fully and readily. and when Asirpa reaches out to him, Sugimoto is more readily willing to change.
once you start thinking of the two as foils, there's no going back. Asirpa reminds Sugimoto of how he lived before the war, and Sugimoto devotes himself to Asirpa... Yuusaku reminds Ogata of how he lived before the war, and Ogata kills Yuusaku. one accepts the aid of someone who can help him heal, while the other rejects it.
this all culminates in Ogata murdering Wilk, and shooting Sugimoto. at that point, Sugimoto is basically what Ogata could've been if he'd embraced the connection that was offered to him. and I think it's symbolically meaningful that Ogata tries to kill this symbolic healthier version of himself. with this one decision, he ensures that Asirpa will never be able to think well of him... not if she ever learns the whole truth. whether Ogata knows it or not, he's essentially been watching as, once again, another person lives a more blessed and prosperous existence that he cannot partake in. he's always on the outside looking in, and when he shoots Sugimoto, he closes off one more important avenue.
I absolutely love the scene where Asirpa shoots Ogata in the eye. first of all, Asirpa and Sugimoto are beginning to swap their views on killing. Asirpa's morals have been tested, and she's starting to come to Sugimoto's early conclusion that killing isn't something she wants to do, but sometimes it can't be avoided if you want to survive. meanwhile, Sugimoto has picked up Asirpa's philosophy of being as non-lethal as possible. war isn't the proper tool for preserving a culture... Sugimoto already knows it isn't the proper tool for preserving a person. he went to war, and it nearly destroyed him. but now, everything he values about himself exists because, from the beginning, Asirpa had the correct tools to let him rebuild himself.
and so, when the arrow hits Ogata in the eye, Sugimoto saves Ogata's life, regardless of his rage. Ogata failed to kill Sugimoto, and Asirpa succeeded in healing him. as a result, when Asirpa is in danger of being pulled into the dark, she has someone there to help her.
and Ogata has still failed to corrupt anyone. he can't figure out how to bring someone down to his level so that he can relate to them. he's still alone. he never quite figures out what's good for him until after he's already ruined it.
Hey, anon! <33 When I first read this, I was totally blown away /gen And honestly, you deserve your own meta post about Ogata for real ‼️‼️‼️ I'd totally lose my mind again like I did the first time I read this /pos
Let me give you my thoughts in chunks! :-D I'll put it under the cut because holy shit it's so long
"it starts with Yuusaku, and Ogata's paradoxical hatred/envy of him. in my mind, Ogata hates Yuusaku because he represents a privileged existence. one that their father granted to Yuusaku, while neglecting Ogata. they're like light and shadow. Yuusaku's purity has and will always frame him as an exception to the compromises that other people have to make... and it's not just in relation to Ogata. normal men compromise their morals during war, but Yuusaku is treated as though he's above everyone."
My god, the thematic light and dark analogy is so on point. I agree: Yuusaku is the embodiment of light whilst his older half-brother is the dark entity. I always found it interesting that Yuusaku was pushed to a position of veneration (chapter 165, page 12). By keeping himself pure, he will be an "icon" for other men to look at and relieve themselves from the guilt of killing another person. What's interesting about it is that he's following the interpretation of their father about the superstition surrounding the flagbearer role. I argue that Yuusaku, to some degree, is forced to be light. He was forced to play a role that dictated that his life should radiate purity. His position as flagbearer and the mysticism behind the role wasn't his idea (and to some extent, wasn't his choice - he just followed what his father wanted); but because he's a willing participant of this superstitious belief, he, therefore, transforms himself from mere man to a purity akin to divinity.
Because he's so pure, to the point of veneration, I feel like that was part and parcel of why Ogata killed him: to prove to himself that even the gods and their blessed children bleed and die at the hands of men like him.
YES YES YES!!!! Exactly! I love your idea of them trying to bring the other to their "ideological side" as a form of relating to one another. I feel like Yuusaku wanted to "save" his brother from the darkness that he feels had enshrouded him his entire life. Ogata, on the other hand, wanted to prove that a person who was beloved by his parents and who had it all can still be someone like him: "normal". This comes from the idea that Ogata thought that it was normal for everyone not to feel guilt when killing people (chapter 165, page 13); who knows what else he thought was normal?
I think there's a part of Ogata that really wanted to be a blessed child, underneath all his layers. There's a Tumblr post that tries to pull out the intricacies and nuances in Ogata's confrontation with Hanazawa Senior in chapter 103. I think it really showed Ogata's vulnerability, the inner child in him that continued to be ignored and hurt.
I think Ogata's hand in Yuusaku's death does immortalize his purity forever! Because Ogata finally gave up on their game: Yuusaku won their ideological battle by offering Ogata true love and acceptance (it's completely familial please) - something he's never received from anyone in the past. Though, I don't fully agree with how Yuusaku's death ended Ogata's potential to change: rather, for me, it symbolizes that Ogata's life ideology is flawed, and he ran away from it rather than confronting it. I argue that his potential to change died in your later observation of him shooting Sugimoto and/or when he pointed a gun at Asirpa and got shot in the eye by accident.
I love your idea of Ogata having his own curse as a result of Yuusaku's death: "nobody should be able to kill without feeling guilt". Because that's the backbone of his relationship with Asirpa, the one who reminds him of Yuusaku and someone who also tried to love him.
at the end of their journey together, we see Ogata draw a clear parallel between Asirpa and Yuusaku. both are people who have an empathetic, sentimental urge to care about the lives of others... and they expect to try and maintain that moral framework, even in the midst of a conflict that seems to necessitate violence and death. in some ways, their dedication to these morals can come off as judgmental towards people who have ended up dirtying their hands already. early in their relationship, Asirpa and Sugimoto grappled with that.
[With so many emotions] fuck. 🥹🥹 I love your assessment of both Asirpa and Yuusaku being so firm in their own beliefs that they can come off as judgemental or even condescending to those that fail to meet their standards. Well in the case of Asirpa, she eventually learns that the world isn't as white and black as she used to think, so she too grows in her own ideological perspective.
Sugimoto and Ogata are foils, you're so right, and you pointed out the main reason why I strongly believe that. It boils down to their respective relationships with Asirpa, who is characterized as a "chosen one" in the sense that she's a) given a huge moral task of protecting the Ainu (and later on even the other ethnic minorities in Karafuto and Russia), and b) she's - for the most part of the story - depicted as someone who's is pure (and is firm in staying pure) in a world of bloodshed and greed.
I like your idea on how Sugimoto and Ogata had their respective person who represented light in their lives. And you're right: they differ in their response to being "saved". I wholeheartedly agree with how Asirpa reminds Sugimoto about his past (unmarred) life. But for me, I think rather than being reminded of his past, unmarred life, Yuusaku represents a "what if" in Ogata. He represents a blessed life that Ogata himself could have lived; to go even further, even perhaps the lost life he could've had, should Yuusaku hadn't been born.
I think that Ogata truly did close himself to the possibility of a blessed life. Hence, I love the metaphor of him having his own path in the snow versus the lynx (meko oyasi) and the rest of the group in chapter 169. Like a lynx that lives a solitary life, he was forced to live life alone because of the childhood neglect he experienced (I talked about that in my first meta for Ogata and Love). But because he killed Yuusaku and therefore gained his "curse", he further alienates himself from others, trapping himself in his own twisted worldview by clinging onto it. He forced himself to be isolated - hence he's walking on his own path, which hints on his independence as a character on the surface but shows his loneliness on a deeper level.
I love this so much that I'm just nodding my head to everything you said. Hey, you dropped this crown, your majesty 👑 I love how you looked into how Sugimoto and Asirpa grew throughout the series, especially in the Karafuto Arc for the latter. And how despite Asirpa dipping her toes into the moral dark, she has an anchor in Sugimoto. She's not like pure Yuusaku, but she's not also as dark as Ogata: she now exists in a lighter moral grey.
"He's still alone. He never quite figures out what's good for him until after he's already ruined it." I love love LOVE this one. Because you're right: Ogata damns himself in pits of the darkness of his own volition. He curses himself never to escape its traps by killing (or attempting to kill) those that try to pierce through his gloomy veil.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this, anon. I loved every moment of reading and analyzing Ogata more <3

Thinking about Ogata, hopelessly in love…
He’s so used to feeling nothing at all, it hits him hard and he has no idea how to handle it, how to explain it or understand it- but even though he doesn’t get it he knows it’s your fault.
He’ll be a bit more defensive around you, a bit snippier than he is with the others but he’s always hovering, walking so close behind you he might step on your heel. He watches you sleep, memorized by every detail on your face.
Grabbing your arms and holding you closer to his chest when walking through crowds.
“I don’t trust you not to get lost, stick with me.”
Whenever he hits a particularly good shot, he’ll pull you aside, wanting you to take a look at it. Showing off in his own, awkward and weird way.
Don’t you dare bring it up though, he’ll act like you’re the crazy one for even suspecting there is something more.

"life gave us plenty of everything the blue sky, the sea, a mortal body choose! choose! a river has two banks. a river has two banks." I've been thinking about drawing some kind of comfort theme with them for so long, you know, I realize that they have this relationship where they're more like yelling and then kissing, but just imagine a moment of peace and no fighting or arguing. I've actually read so much fanfiction as well and I'd like to draw from some of it, but for now something from my own thoughts
(lyrics by shura-don't believe in tears and honestly I almost cried while I was drawing to this track)

Golden Kamuy Headcanon #3 – Ogata’s birth
With how heavily cat-coded Ogata is, I was surprised his birthday is January 22nd instead of February 22nd, Japan’s Cat Day (猫の日). Then, a thought came to me: what if he had been born one month earlier than expected, making him a preterm baby?
