Crazy Ex Girlfriend reading that no one has asked for but I've been thinking about it! but it's about whats up with the songs that Rebecca isn't present for (and some solos that she is but that just makes it confusing)! Because there's a lot of different interpretations of it, and I want to just put out mine

For me, the songs that Rebecca isn't there for aren't in her head, they are in the singers' minds. In the world of the show, especially with songs like "Hey West Covina," "Thought Bubbles," "I Go to the Zoo," (and plenty more), Rebecca absolutely doesn't know the inner thoughts being shared in those numbers. We know she is still projecting onto them from other songs from around those times- "Settle for Me", "Ping Pong Girl", "Strip Away My Conscious" (the first two are putting words in other character's mouths, the third spells out her impression of him pretty clear.) Rebecca doesn't know their struggles, that's why they are singing them to us, the viewers!

They're singing because it's the language that the show, "Crazy Ex Girlfriend" uses to share large emotions and inner thoughts. Yes, it's also the diegetic way Rebecca sees the world, but since her POV is the primary view the show, that's how the viewpoint remains. Despite this, even though Becks is the main character, CXG still goes out of its way to develop and explore character when they are outside of her, to show that none of them are exactly perfect narrators.

I think saying that Rebecca is the one choreographing their personal vignettes- retroactively, after she learns about them- weakens them and puts too many filters over the ideas in the songs. Because then it makes every song actually about what she thinks someone's breakthrough is about. Lets be real, she never had and will never have enough thoughts about George to formulate "George's Turn."

If this was a much more experimental show- which, it already is, but even moreso than normal- everyone would have their own interpretations of their psyche, like Nathaniel's romcom episode. Like, say for "Trapped in a Car" maybe Rebecca is singing in her head, but Paula is imagining a really shitty filler part in a romance novel where the side character she does not care about has way too many lines. They'd be saying the same thing in different mediums, but in the show, they just converge into one song.

CXG is musical comedy, written by comedic musicians and sold with the idea that each episode has a song. And as a medium, musicals are fundamentally fantastic at doing this introspective character work! The changing of genres for certain characters is already an insight on how to read them, which makes it a joy to analyze. It's a format that really, really works for a show that wants viewers to empathize with everybody in the cast. The show needs to use "Rebecca's worldview" on other characters because that's the kind of show it is!

imo it's such a neat move that the writers decided to explore how the introspective and emotional medium of musicals could work as a coping mechanism and I love it! But, if anything, making the main character literally have vivid mental music numbers does confuse the use of them in any other place when they're played more narratively straight lol

Weeeell, I have various idea that I'm writing down all at the same time. I'll list the various AUs here.

The Gang! AU

Ok no this isn't some sort of Criminal AU, I literally didn't know what to name it JSKDKS

Anyway, I'm actually writing this along with a friend of mine. It's based on a rp we had and it's quite long. We're writing one chapter each, I'm currently finishing chapter five. It kinda follows the story of Little Nightmares 2, but at the same time is canon divergent. Does that make sense?

We added two of our kid OCs to travel with Mono and Six!

Their names are Zip and Emerald respectively, from left to right! Zip was made by my friend while Emerald is my kid. The art was done by me!

They're not the only OCs we made for this story; we also have five glitch kids, a couple of bullies and a patient from the Hospital.

Since it's long, we decided to split it into three parts. The first part takes place in the Pale City, the second part in the Maw and the third in a location made up by us that we're still crafting.

The good news: Mono doesn't get dropped and Runaway Kid is alive!

The bad news: everything else literally every single thing

It's gonna have a good ending, though. It's the least we can do after everything we put these kids through😭

Restaurant Maw! AU

Just the monsters of LN put in a modern setting! Not only that, it's Maw employees centric!

Basically in this AU the Maw is a very well-known restaurant and hotel, in a very similar fashion to the bathouse in Spirited Away. The Lady is obviously the boss, the Ferryman becomes the driver of the Maw's personal bus, Roger is the keeper, Bellhop is still a bellhop and also the maître d'hotel (aka the guy who makes sure the guests are comfortable etc.), the Chefs are still the Chefs - their names are Bruce and Bernard! And lastly, the Nomes are a bunch of waiters, bellhops and cooks.

Things are going very well for eveyone until one day the Chefs go outside for a smoking break and they find a baby in a box. They take her in and keep her hidden for a couple of days before the Lady invitably finds out.

She decides to let them keep her with the condition that they raise her on their own and take care of all of her needs wihout bothering her - which of course doesn't happen at all and eventually all the employees in the Maw grow attached to baby Sawako nicknamed Six.

This one has all my favorite tropes: slice of life, found family, and I'm hoping to achieve comedy (which is very complicated for me because I have a very dramatic style).

Plus the Chefs are italian because I'm italian and I claimed them, so if you want to see one of them teach the Lady how to swear in italian you came in the right place.

RCG and the Pretender Live! AU

And they lived! I started writing this immediately after I finished VLN but I was blinded by pain so it's a little messy. I have to edit it.

But basically the point is: they survived! But are stuck on land. The first to wake up is RCG, who I named Valeria, and she spots the Pretender a few feet from her and realizes that somehow they both managed to float ashore. Luckily for her, the Nest is now very far away, although they can still see it from the distance.

At first she wants to leave the Pretender there, but then decides to bring her along, tying her hands behind her back first. And so begins the girls voyage in the big wide world, trying to survive and becoming besties in the process.

Im debating wheter I want the Pretender to develop a little crush on RCG or not. Mhhhh. I'll let you guys know.

Mono Jumps in Time! AU

THIS ONE WAS INSPIRED BY THIS ADORABLE FANART BY @kelpermoosee !! Go check them out their art is adorable!!! This is also a Mono centric AU!

So basically! When Six is kidnapped by the Thin Man and Mono goes to save her, his high distress and strong, swirling emotions lead him to not only travel from a place to the next, but to also accidentally go back in time.

He jumps out from a TV but, surprise surprise, he's not in the Pale City anymore. He's landed right in front of the Pretender, who immediately takes a liking to him and wants him to be her new friend. Mono is extremely confused and at first and doesn't realize what happened, so obviously he tries to go back to the Pale City, but then he sees a girl in a yellow raincoat and immediately assumes she's Six.

He assumes that's where the Thin Man brought her, so he tries to run after her, but he's costantly hindered by either the Pretender or her staff. Will he ever get to "Six" and realize that he jumped in time? I'll decide, because this story is still under construction.

Six Forgets! AU

You know that quote from the comics?

"What's the last thing you remember? Tell me. If you don't tell us, you're sure to forget altogether."

Beautiful. And also what prompted me to come up with this AU.

Some things to clarify: the Eye is a collective conciousness that feeds off from negative emotions, the Thin Man lives but can't leave the Pale City, and The Lady is a grown up Six. The Maw kids from the comics are here! Plus a few OCs of mine.

And lastly: Six couldn't handle the guilt from dropping Mono and repressed all memories involving him altogheter, so she completely forgot about him.

Six gets on the Maw, but this time instead of waking up in a suitcase, she's brought to Roger adn the other children by the Ferryman. There, she befriends a few children but no one gets closer to her than the Runaway Kid. They both want to be free and plan an escape together.

In the meantime, Mono is still trapped in the Signal Tower, but he's convinced that Six let him slip by accident and that she'll come back for him. (The Eye is very frustated with him bc they be planning on feeding on his sadness and rage and then he has the audacity to be hopeful? The nerve!) That's until he gets a glimpse of his best friend and this unknown child through one of the TVs on the Maw, joking and playing with each other, and she confesses to this... no one, really, that he's the best friend she's ever had.

As you can imagine, Mono goes feral. The Eye couldn't be happier.

Chaos ensues! We got a lot of angst, violence, Monster!Mono and also some wholesome moments. Also out of context spoiler: RK and Six lead a revolution.

The Lost Ones

This one is just a bunch of quick drabbles that talk about the glitching remains. They all deserved better.

Hunter and Veronica

I was not gonna miss the occasion of writing simp hunter. Take it or leave it.

Based on my Hunter theory!

My beautiful terrible disaster of a man works on the Maw as a chef, but no one really knows why since he's not good at it. Fortunately, the vast majority of the Guests is just too hungry to care and the current Lady, a woman with a scarecrow mask, doesn't want to fire him. A few Guests have complains, though; for example, a Teacher who seemingly never blinks and a very massive Doctor, whom he befriends.

One day, a filming crew gets on the Maw and the Lady informs her staff that they will be staying for a while to film a commercial-documentary of the restaurant, which will bring more and more Guests. With the crew came a famous, very talented chef named Veronica who has her own extremely successful cooking show, who offers to help the current chef as a thank you for letting them stay without having to pay.

Initially the Hunter is not too happy about this. In his eyes he doesn't need the help, but they start getting closer and closer with time.

This will probably be wholesome but end in a very bad, tragic way. I'd say I'm sorry but I'm not lol

it’s ancient greek! it means homecoming, the idea of a triumphant return home for the hero after a long journey. i found it through looking at the root of nostalgia. in this fic of course it’s kind of a grim tongue in cheek play on it. the reader’s coming back to the mountains, but she’s running away after a bad breakup, and the welcome she gets is... shall we say less than ideal haha

ty nonnie!! i didn’t have the right space for it, but after kohsuke was ripped apart and eaten kuroo stayed by the reader’s side until late in the night, only disappearing when he heard the reader’s parents/search party approaching. they found her lying in pools of blood (and scattered half eaten body parts), shaking and unresponsive – they knew no animal could’ve done something like that. so they knew something lurked in those woods, but considering the reader had repressed the memories, her mom couldn’t just come out and say it <33

You just sorta… poke ppl. (1:59 a.m.) anyway, I was actually pretty good for a while… I got into the national championship. Everyone was super proud of me. Yang and dad came to every game. My uncle Qrow even made it to the finals. (2:00 a.m.) Then I lost. (2:00 a.m.) The funny thing was, I didn’t even really care. Everyone else seemed to be way more disappointed than I was. I was just… glad it was over and I didn’t have to go to another, harder match. (2:01 a.m.) so I quit. I’d kept going because I was making everyone proud, I kept going because I was good. But once I had nothing left to do it for, I just… Couldn’t bring myself to even try. (2:02 a.m.) anyway dad was… let’s just say really upset. It was super dramatic. Red is honestly one of my favorites too. It was so easy to write (compared to apt) hahaha and although Sehun wasn’t a good character in it, I enjoyed the progression of how real the characters were? Like---this happens in real life and not all things end happily with rainbows and butterflies. It is a struggle to see a person go through something like this but it’s also a testament to their character and their willpower to walk away from it and say when they’ve had enough. Dive (pt. 2)

 Im so so so sorry it took me this long.  But its here, albeit with a shitty ending so sorry for that... but i hope you enjoy it anyways.

           It had been a couple weeks since you walked out on Tyler.  You were getting along ok, at least as ok as someone who's love of their life had just cheated on them should be doing.  You had your moments where you just broke down and cried, those were mostly at three in the morning when Tyler called you drunk and begging you to take him back, and the nights you didn't answer- the voicemails would be even worse.  

           Jamie like the amazing friend he is promised he would keep Tyler out of trouble as best as he could but you know yourself how much of a handful he could be.  Jamie had brought the rest of your things back to your apartment which you were extremely thankful for, it would have been hell if you had to go back and relive your relationship with Tyler.  Jamie told you that Tyler didn't move when he was getting your stuff, he was just sitting on the couch staring blankly at the tv that wasn't even turned on.  You broke down crying and Jamie held you and then tucked you in bed and truth be told you didn't have very much motivation to move.

           Tyler's game had drastically changed, anyone with eyes could see the difference between his playing when the two of you were together and now.  You couldn't deny the pang of guilt you felt for this even knowing that Tyler isn't your responsibility and neither is his playing ability.  You knew he was drinking more and going out a lot more than usual, Jamie had told you, and once again there was a pang of guilt.

           Today had been a particularly good day so you decided to go out to the café not far from your apartment to read a book and also get some social interaction- something you had been lacking.  You had invited Jamie along be he declined which you didn't mind, it would give you time to think while you were moderately happy- something that hadn't happened in a while.  You got your drink and sat down at a cozy table toward the back, away from the door.  Shortly after a man asked to sit down at you table as there were none available near a plug for his laptop.  

           “I'm sorry” the man sitting across from you starts “I have to confess, I lied I don't need to charge my laptop, I saw you sitting here and I just wanted an excuse to talk to such a beautiful lady.”

           You feel your cheeks heating up, flattered by his comment.

           “I'm William, it's a delight to meet you” he flashes you an award-winning smile.

           “(y/n)” you smile back politely not really interested in conversation.

           “So, do you come here very often?” Really the most used line in the book… like ever “that was stupid I'm sorry I shouldn't have said that.”

           “Listen” you start off determined to make a point “if this were any other time I might be interested in a conversation but I’m just not right now, all I am interested in right now is my book, so if you will excuse me I’m going to get back to it.”

           “Well I could give you my number you could send me a text when you’re done the book” he says completely ignoring the point you were trying to make.

           “Listen buddy” a new voice chimes in, an all too familiar voice “I’m pretty sure the lady said she doesn’t want a conversation so if get on your way before I make you.”

           You scoff at Tyler’s assertiveness and how quickly William gets his things together.  Tyler probably wouldn’t do anything to the guy, but then again you didn’t think Tyler would cheat on you either.  Great here come the water works, so much for having a good day.  You’re interrupted from your thoughts when Tyler takes a seat across from you where William was sitting just seconds ago.

           “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” you ask him extremely annoyed “At least William had the decency to ask.”  You add the last bit in knowing it would piss Tyler off.

           “William” Tyler shakes his head “would you have actually given that guy a chance (y/n)?”

           “Yeah maybe I would have” you state firmly.

           “He doesn’t seem like your type.”

           “Oh really?” you ask with a dry laugh “then what is my type Tyler?  Men that don’t care about me?  Men that party all the time?  Men that cheat on me?”

           Tyler’s features soften and you can tell right away he’s been thinking about what he did.  “(y/n) I’m sorry” he says simply.  You weren’t expecting an apology Tyler is always so stubborn.

           “How did you even find out where I was?”

           “I went to your place and I figured you just weren’t answering the door” he lets out a little chuckle “knowing you weren’t even in there makes me feel a bit stupid but anyways.  You weren’t answering so I came here because you love it here and I wanted to be close to you.”

            You can’t help it but your heart swells just before the image of him kissing the perfect blonde crosses your mind and once again tears come to your eyes. You can’t stand the idea of letting him see you cry so you pick up your things and walk out of the small café. You know Tyler is right behind you because you can hear his footsteps.

           “Is he the reason you aren’t interested?” That is not Tyler.  You turn around and William is right behind you “personally, I don’t think he’s worth your tears.”

           “It doesn’t matter what the reason is, I am just not interested in you” this boy cannot take a hint.

          “Why the fuck are you here again?” Tyler exclaims coming up to you and William.

           “Why the fuck do you think it’s ok too make a gorgeous girl cry?” William asks him getting up in Tyler’s face.  Knowing that it is a very bad decision on William’s part to get that close to Tyler you squeeze in between them, facing Tyler.  He might have broken your heart but you still trust him a hell of a lot more than a complete stranger.

          “William, you don’t know me and I don’t know you, I am not interested in you and what happens between me and Tyler does not concern you one bit” you say steadily despite the burning stares from both men.  

          “Yeah move along now buddy” Tyler adds ushering him along.

           Once William was surely gone you start talking to Tyler “Ty, I don’t blame you I honestly should have seen it coming you were out all the time partying and I mean she looked absolutely perfect.  It’s not ok that you did it but you did and it’s kind of difficult to go back on it.”

           “I was terrible to you (y/n)” Tyler says taking your hand in his “and I want to talk to you about it because you deserve so much more, so can we please go back to your apartment and talk?”

           Probably against your better judgement you let him hold your hand all the way on the ten-minute walk back to your apartment and all the way up the elevator to your apartment door where there is a basket with an assortment of things.

            “I brought this for you to apologize and you didn’t answer so I just left it” he says picking it up and studying the contents “I-uh I got you some flowers, I thought they looked nice and I remember when we went on our date to the flower garden you said you liked them, and I got you some of the candy you really like and there’s a teddy bear and I filled this jar up with everything I love about you and Jamie told me to make a photo album of all my favorite pictures of us so that’s there too, but just in case you don’t hate me any less there’s some matches in there.”  

           By the time Tyler finished rambling you had opened the door and lead him inside your apartment.  “Tyler, are you done?”

            “Well no but if you want me stop I will but I had a lot more to say” he said nervously.

             “Should I get you some water then?” you ask as a joke but when he nods you realize he’s serious when he says he still has a lot to say.  “Tyler, you just need to tell me one thing, I don’t need the gifts or the long speeches just one honest answer.”

           “Ok” he says confidently “one 100% honest answer.”

           “Was she the only the girl?”  

            Without even think about it Tyler confidently gets out a “yes.”

            “Ok now a follow up question” you pause not really sure if you want the answer “why?”

           “Because I’m stupid and I didn’t realize how amazing I had it when I had you. (y/n) if you forgive me I promise I will never party without you.”

          “That’s a pretty big promise Tyler.”

          “Well, you’re worth the biggest promises, because” he pauses “because I love you.”

           You had never heard Tyler say those words directed at you ever.  So, to say you’re a little bit shocked is an understatement.  

          “I know that you probably think I’m just desperate now, which I am, but I really do mean it.  It just took me a little while to realize.  (y/n) I love you so much it’s crazy, I didn’t think I would ever be the guy to say that but here I am and I don’t want to be any other guy.”

          “Tyler…” you say quietly cutting him off.

           “(y/n) please let me finish, if you give me a second chance I swear to you I won’t blow it, I promise you I won’t blow it.”

          “Tyler, what am I supposed to say to that?”

           “That you’ll give me a second chance?” he says hopeful “and that you love me too would be nice.”

           “Tyler, I do love you” you say and a goofy smile appears on his face “things have to change though.”

           “Things will change (y/n)” he smiles taking a step closer to you, wrapping his arms around you and giving a kiss to your forehead “Let’s go out to dinner?”

           “Ok, sure” you smile up at him “can we get pizza?”

           “We can have whatever makes you happy.”
