Mini-ish rant a head about old computers

When a program gets updated and only semi works after that because the laptop is from 2011 and wont update past 2015

More context godot got updated and now it wont test play my game, only allows me to do stuff outside of game testing which isnt helpful as i need to test as i go cause i'm a baby newb at coding it doesnt quite comput with my brain yet

I desperately need a new computer as my old laptop that i had for like 4-5 years quit randomly so i'm stuck with the dinosaur laptop till i can afford a new one though it's testing my patience as it only has 4 gigs of ram... its definitely showing its age as its slowing down, programs glitch that havent done so before, and some just refuse to start because the devs updated the program past what the computer is able to handle

I thought I had a lead on a decent refurbished desktop computer for my price range, but it turned out to not be promising at all.

Back to the drawing board I guess.

As of now I can basically have only one browsing window open on said computer without taxing its memory, so I guess it’ll still work to post here and to AO3 as well as typing in Google Docs.

I haven’t tried doing any of my graphic design hobbies (mood boards and things) but I’m almost afraid to take that step.

This really is the worst. I wish I had a solution on the horizon.

I suppose I’ll have to make due with what I’ve got. Word processing on my desktop and everything else on my tablet or phone. Why must new computers be so expensive?

A tragedy has occurred.

My laptop (which is from 2007, I kid you not) has a love/hate relationship with the Sims...emphasis on the hate part. Anyhow, I went to visit my SIms Westeros and the only character who I can control is Joffrey, who is inexplicably wearing a suit.  I have no idea what's going on.

Also, there's horses absolutely EVERYWHERE which is probably what's making my computer wheeze when it tries to load the world.

Had an urge to write. My computer kept freezing up. Finally got it working and the urge vanished...

Yammering about my dying tech

Remembering that I have five of those Soul Edge comics left to translate, and at the same time, I’m juggling several fanfic WIPs and other translation projects (these things are all related, really). On top of that, I’m painfully aware that these are all on a ten year-old laptop that shouldn’t have long for this world. The time its old hard drive died is seared into my memory, and who knows what else might fail beyond repair. I don’t think the battery is what it used to be, and the trackpad buttons are so depressed that they’re almost useless.

Weird how attached I still feel.

Not the first time I’ve looked into new ones, but I think now is the time. My plan is to transfer my stuff before this one bricks. I’m damn sure that old thing isn’t going to run Windows 11 one way or another.

My netbook has been freezing pretty regularly, especially on tumblr or if I have a lot of tabs open, for about a year now. And about once every couple of weeks it bluescreens. Spoke to a tech, he said it's most likely a RAM issue. Which, okay, 6 year old netbook, not surprising. But it wasn't happening often enough for me to bother bringing it in to get the RAM replaced, since I only use my netbook in between calls at work or while I'm writing. (And it never froze while using Word, since it's not a RAM intensive program) Except that now it's doing it CONSTANTLY. Like it'll freeze every 5 minutes and bluescreens at least once a night. Doing a proper reboot doesn't even fix it temporarily. Hell, just today it froze when it was still on the login screen. Sooooo I need to bring my laptop to the tech to replace the RAM, is what I'm saying. And it means I'll be sticking to mobile while I'm at work in the meantime.

Here's a new error for me. My laptop's graphics driver blocked Firefox from running when I tried to search on Disboard. I'm not completely sure to what end these things are related, but since I closed the window that site was running on, the browser seems to be running again. I guess it really has been a while since some part of it rattled me and that was the night.

Just one more week. Hang in there for one more week. That's all I ask until the new computer is delievered.

After several hours of troubleshooting and mod installation, I think the writing on the wall is that it's completely impossible for my ancient 2006 Dell laptop to run Minecraft well.

I'm starting to think maybe this fuckery with my laptop might be because I'm uploading something to Dropbox? That doesn't seem like it SHOULD be so RAM intensive, but when you've only got 2GBs of RAM...

I don't know how much longer I'm going to have my decade-old laptop. I've used it throughout my college years, and the night its old hard drive died (before final projects, no less) and the week I waited for a replacement still haunt me. It's when it crashes that I actually feel good about writing with Google Docs. If that happened tonight with a Word document saved on a flash drive, I'd probably be crying.
