I’ve decided the vampires in my novel don’t just turn into bats (already a rad start, my dudes!), but they can transform into various animals according to how old/established/intelligent/skilled they are as a vampire. Which makes it extra funny when my main focus is on these dumb dipshits who have existed for all of five minutes in vampire time (read: 5-20 years) who are still only capable of going bat, but only to attend raves, somehow.

Introduction Post

Hello, my name is CJ Nightingale, and this is my blog dedicated to my OCs, their story, and the development of said story!! I'm making this blog for the sake of having a designated place to talk about my OCs, and so that I have some people to hold me accountable for actually making story progress, since I've been struggling a bit to actually sit down and make progress on getting the comic going. I think having a blog about it will help me stay motivated. Hopefully. Lol

A little bit of story related information:

This story has over 36 very important characters, not including antagonists and "true" side characters. This story takes place over the course of about 7 or 8 years, in 5 acts, taking the characters from middle school into early college. It's based in what I believe would be described as an "urban fantasy" setting, which looks similar to our world but is quite different. The story is meant to be mostly lighthearted, but there will be very intense moments and emotional damage (and a little blood sometimes too, as there will be fantasy violence).

I will make proper posts describing things in more detail as I go, but for the time being here's a brief introduction to each of the main characters:

Skylar: Acts 1-5, sarcastic, takes no BS, a bit of an enigma, Lukas' twin

Jesse: Acts 1-5, scatterbrained, just out here doing his best

Rin: Acts 1-5, mischievous, enjoys trying new things

Zander: Acts 1-5, smart, unbothered, designated "responsible dude"

Tabitha: Acts 1-5, bubbly, arguably too much faith in humanity

Lukas: Acts 1-5, looks more chill than he actually is, emotionally intelligent (most of the time), Skylar's twin

Lydia: Acts 1-5, too smart for her own good, very good with power tools

Marcus: Acts 1-5, quiet, listens a lot and knows more than he should, arguably drinks too much caffeine

Jules: Acts 2-5, highly approachable and talkative, likes poofy dresses

Dillon: Acts 2-5, skeptical of people, likes roller derby, hates group projects

Takuma: Acts 2-5, Ambitious, sarcastic, has doodled on every piece of clothing they own

Mariah Mae: (Kind of a side character) Acts 2-5, wildly peppy, a bit of a nerd, highly authentic person

Rea: Acts 2-5, perpetually has her head in the clouds, bewildered by humans

Dani: Acts 2-5, highly intuitive, knows all the things, likes music and their service dog

Booker: Acts 2-5, tends to accidentally run his mouth, likes basketball, bass guitar, and his friends

Ollie: Acts (1) 3-5, a little bit reactive, closed off, terrifyingly good at sleight of hand and at lying (do not play poker with him)

Meklit: Acts (1) 3-5, levelheaded, blunt, likes people and dislikes shoes

Gavin: Acts 3-5, both lawyer smart and a bit naïve, cellist, keeps putting himself in situations by accident

Goldie: Acts (1) 3-5, a bit shy, puts a lot of pressure on himself but looks really really chill at all times, chronic doodler

Blake: Acts 1-5, very antsy, very tired, very full of nervous energy, makes some poor decisions

Zaahira: Acts 4-5, genuinely nice person, cares about people, prefers plants

Wulf: Acts (3???) 4-5, impulsive, giggly, just happy to be here, on the run from the government

Akachi: Acts (1) 3-5, extremely ambitious, aesthetically inclined, color coordinated at all times

Selene: Acts 4-5, high tolerance for shenanigans, very bubbly, just out here having a good time

Sakura: Acts 4-5, detail oriented, loves stickers, can borderline read minds/hj

Remi: Acts 4-5 (probably??? gonna have to figure that out a bit more), very smart, very sarcastic, very giggly, very happy to be here

Leah: Acts 1-5, insomniac, a bit pretentious, makes some poor decisions

Sylvi: Acts (1) 3-5, borderline annoying theatre kid in the best way possible, very good singer

Karim: (Arguably a side character) Acts 4-5 (maybe idk), arguably too much faith in humanity, enjoys puns

Jono: Acts (3) 5, loves music, loses his train of thought frequently, looks more nervous than he is

Ivanna: Acts (3) 5, tough, good at water polo, believes in doing the right thing

Sovanna: Acts (3) 4-5, super chill, loves stickers, loves travelling, detail oriented

Ash: Act 5, under a ton of pressure, a bit reactive, out here trying his best

Coral: Act 5, can be hard to talk to, big listener, takes herself very seriously

Sib: (arguably a side character) Act 5, way too much energy at all times, good sense of humor, Ari's twin

Ari: (arguably a side character) Act 5, tired, quiet, talks more to animals than he does people

So that's a brief introduction to the non-antagonist characters, I'll make actual introduction posts for them later, but also if y'all want to ask questions about any of them before I get to that lmk!! Also feel free to ask questions about anything related to this story, I'd be happy to talk about it, and it might motivate me to help get stuff done.

Booker was no stranger to a wild party. In a small town, it was all some had to distract them from the mundane. In Booker’s case, a chance to be seen. However, it would be his first time buying and using drugs at such an event. A drink was already in his hand as he scanned for the man with goods, or merchandise, or product? He had no clue how to do any of this. It wasn’t like he could google drug dealing etiquette on his computer. Damn blackmailer. 

Finally spotting the guy, Booker makes his slow approach, repeating his plan for this conversation quickly. "Hey Ollie! Thanks for putting this together. I was starting to think these parties were a myth." He said amicably. "Any plans to go wild tonight, or will it be more of a chill thing for ya?" It was best to put a feeler out there, see if he even had the goods on him. Booker knew what the guy was. Did he care? Not really, but he needed to stay discreet.

she had definitely lured nate out under false pretenses. well not false but...not exactly true. she had asked him to meet her at her car for them to take a trip into town. so they could go to lunch with her mother. who had decided to pay a visit for some reason. and alethea couldn’t face her alone, ollie and monty were a bit too unpredictable to bring along and booker would make her mother too happy. so nate it was. 

“hey, so uh, i figured we could stop by a store right quick before we go to lunch.” alethea smiled as nate approached, hoping he wouldn’t think them some sort of psycho. “my mom will be buying, so get whatever the hell you want.”

Day 6 of NaNoWriMo 2022

I have several inane jokes I’ve been saving for a rainy day for this novel specifically. This is one of them:

“What you boys been up to?” Grace inquires, inspecting her brother critically for any signs of injury or distress. The boys in question shrug in concert. “Catching some tubular waves before the sun goes down, in that nice peak time where it’s not blisteringly hot and not so dark that the tide turns off.” “T’cha, it’s too bad the waves stop after the sun sets, it’d be nice to go out on the water without burning to a crisp all the time!” “You know, if you all wore wet suits, that wouldn’t be such a problem…” Grace offers, brow furrowed. Marnie’s still wrapping her head around the boys’ latest asinine statements. “Hold on. Can we swing back around for a second here? Did you just say before the waves turn off?” Booker reels back as if she’s just admitted she’s not aware of something extremely obvious. “Yeah, Marnie… you know the ocean stops working at night… when everything gets all calm and still…?” Marnie’s mouth drops open, closes, then drops back open again as she attempts to find her words. “You… know the tide is controlled by the moon, right? I need to know that you know that.” Ollie lets out a guffaw, exchanging a wide-eyed glance with Booker, who curls up his fist in front of his mouth to hold back a swaggering and incredulous ohhhh! “The ocean’s not controlled by the moon…! What’s next? They put a man up there too?” Grace huffs out a breath, thumping the pair of them on the shoulder as she comes to stand between them. “Yeah, they did, you absolute wankers. In 1969, even before you lot were turned, so you have no excuse not to know that…!” Marnie’s frown still lingers as she attempts to parse out this chain of logic. Think like a dumbass, Marnie. Think like a dumbass… “I’m sorry… so let me get this straight: you think the waves stop rolling in the minute it gets dark out?” She sends a surreptitious glance over her shoulder to the surf, where indeed, the waves are still coming in fine foamy brine. It’ll be some minutes before the sun sinks beyond the horizon and the moon hangs over them all, but it’s very clear that the waves are still flowing, as waves are wont to do… Ollie and Booker exchange a glance, sharing the floppiest of nods that seem to reverberate through their entire loose-limbed bodies, before they return their gaze to Marnie in tandem, grinning innocently back at her. “Do you…” she purses her lips and silently begs Grace for help. She gives a shrug in response, quietly absolving herself of this conversation. She’s clearly been here before and needs not partake. “…have you not heard of night surfing, then?”

i think every single member of the Shit Squad has been Involved with every other one in some way. Except Booker whos only ever had a thing with dale (and Oliver in humanstuck, whos only been w Cinder/Dale)

Saved the naughtiest and somewhat saddest for last. Pammela when shes misbehaving, otherwise just Pam.

So Pam started off as a part of a trio of Pancham, that were re-released into the wild after being caught by poachers, along side her two parent Pangoro, so in total a family of five. She was the youngest cub, with two older brothers, and quite honestly a doting set of parents who despite everything were very calm and good, having raised a few cubs before her set. We managed to find a good safe place to take her family to, so they could try again at a peaceful life. We work a lot with pokemon who can be sent back to where they belong, or where they feel most at home, and we knew this family unit was ready! unfortunately for us, and more so for Pam, we had not predicted the raid that would be enacted on the area we had released them into. 

Pam after going through one scary event of being poached and caged and shipped around to be sold, had it happen a second time. Incredibly unlucky is the only way to describe it. We heard about the attack by Rockets and came by to see what the damage was. Pam was the sole survivor, they whipped up her brothers to cart off to an auction house, and her two parents fought hard but perished to poachers, as the thugs couldn't capture them and instead went for the cubs. She was found amongst the wreckage of her den, totally alone, she did however recognise myself and Grey who had returned to help and inspect. We couldn't leave her behind, she was utterly terrified of being in the wild after two bad events so close together, no family, no friends. Perhaps it was partially guilt about being responsible for what happened, both myself and Grey blame ourselves for what transpired there, and so we took her back to the island with us. She had a very rocky first year with us, getting into fights with everyone, the only pokemon she warmed up to in that time was Booker, my dear Teddiursa who had gone through a very similar situation in his lifetime and sympathised with her. It kept her in good company as she tried to make the best of a bad situation. 

It wasn't until that next year that we happened to hatch Andy and Olly, the twin Tyrogues who Grey keeps with us. Maybe they reminded her of her brothers, we chalk it up to that, they have sort of similar personalities, but she took the ‘big sister’ role really seriously and went about teaching them how to be the naughtiest in the house. She began to repair with them around, started to eat better, chat with them, and then in turn others around them, started partaking in games and activities with others, and after another half a year we caught her laughing for the first time in a very long time.

Ever since, Pam has been uncomfortable with other Pangoro, so we've let her choose where and who she spends her time with, which is usually in the home, or out in the gardens, running circles around the others, and getting up to no good. She’s very smart, and quite defensive and stand offish when confronted, but we cannot blame her for this at all, and instead try to channel that energy into teaching the younger pokemon her sneaky clever ways. She’s quite the tactician, and seems to analyse things at a breakneck pace compared to others of her kind. Sharp as a tack is our Pam. 

She has been an important marker in our work, we change how we handle re-releases now, events like that stay with us, and we just cant forget them, or fully get over it. She is both living proof of our success and our failures. None the less, we have seen her become kind, and sometimes even sweet with her brotherly Tyrogue brothers, who now tower over her, but still listen and respect her wise words, and follow her devious and tricky plans. She is still against re-release, and doesn't trust being away from the island very much, so we feel she’s more than likely going to hang around for a long while with us, and we’re just fine with that. Pam has been a good influence on shy and reserved pokemon, and often can get them to come out of their shell fast. her experiences have also left her understanding of those who come to us with similar circumstances, so she’s very patient with others who have lost family. We use her as a buddy for youngsters who may need company and support after such incidents, and they warm to her very well.

Booker waves politely at his three-minute date as they walk away, taking a drink to continue his pleasant buzz. He never understood why speed dating was so popular.
