Quick Status Update Post !

Alright ! So I have quite a few things I will work on during April in preperation for what's to come in May, so I'll tell you where I am currently with my works and what I hope to achieve.

OMORI - Out of the Abyss

Part 8 of Act 1 is 100% complete in terms of writing. All I have left to do are the illustrations.

As of writing this, I have made 4 simple illustrations out of 6, 4 comic pages out of -possibly- 13 or 14 and 0 animated video out of 1.

There is a lot to do still, but I have surprised myself by managing to make 99% of the currently finished illustrations in 1 day. The video will undoubtedly take more time, but if I keep the pace for the rest, it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Part 8 will be posted here in 3 segments. I hope to manage to post it in its entirety before the end of April. Because next month, I will be busy with :

Mermay

That's right. Which also means I'll start preparing for it during this month.

As of writing this, the official prompts for Mermay 2023 have not been comunicated yet, which, I must say, makes me nervous. So nervous in fact I have made my own prompt list based on the ones from previous years.

Now, you might tell me "If Mermay is so important for you, you probably should just put Out of the Abyss on hiatus for now, don't you think ?"

Nuh-uh. No can do. Here's why :

It is very likely that I will spoil some of my plans for the following Acts of Out of the Abyss during Mermay.

Not that Mermay will be OMORI centric, on the contrary, you can expect some Cookie Run and maybe other stuff to come.

But due to the circumstances, I believe I should finish part 8 as soon as I can because, while NOT the last part of Act 1, it will still give some sense of closure.

But, if I fail to finish Part 8 before May comes, at least I'd have tried.

TL;DR

I'll try to finish and post Act 1 Part 8 of Out of the Abyss before Mermay comes.

Whether I succed to post it in time or not, expect some entries of Mermay to spoil things for the following Acts of Out of the Abyss. Maybe some of Act 2 out right, but most likely things from Act 4 and beyond.

May I ask a question about your Mermaid AU...regarding Mari and Sunny's relationship?

Been in the fandom a long time, so this is something I usually as with AUs that feature her (especially ones where she lives).

Is this gonna be another case of Mari and Sunny having an abusive or otherwise intentionally harmful relationship...?

No. Not in the black-and-white sense, at least. 

Both in canon and this AU, I imagine that Mari is under a lot of pressure from her parents to be ‘perfect’ - and she’s doing her best to keep up with those expectations. When Sunny offers to join her for the concert, she’s delighted to have him - but as the date gets closer and her stress about everything (school, music, sunny, etc) builds up - she does take that out on him a little. I think the ‘fight’ is sort of the first (and, accidentally) the last time she really blows up at him. 

It just so happens that in the game, that fight happens on a staircase, and in the AU, that fight happens on the edge of a pier. 

Very similar to Sunny feels about her in the game, Mari didn’t mean for any harm to come to him. I truly think she loves her brother, and vice versa - however, they’re children. And as a result neither of them make the most perfectly rational decisions along the way. 

Also, pretty much everything in this AU so far has been from Sunny’s perspective. As a result, the flashbacks you see come with a bit of narrative bias. I hope that as this little AU grows, I can do Mari justice in terms of where she’s coming from as well!

In summary:

SPEEDRUNNING some Mer Omori designs for the last day of Mermay! 

The vague story I had in mind for this (au?) is that the headspace gang (Aubrey, Hero, Kel, Omori) are all Merpeople who have dedicated themselves to saving and taking care of humans that have been lost or otherwise abandoned at sea- including Basil and Sunny! What they don’t yet know is why Sunny ended up in the water that fateful day... and that Omori and this mysterious new human are more connected than they think...

What was she doing? The violin was already gone, ruined. Yelling at him wouldn’t fix anything.

Swallowing her anger, Mari reaches for her brother’s hand. Unfortunately, with the waves all around them and the wind whistling in their ears, he couldn’t hear a word of her reassurances. He jerks back, stumbling just a step too far, and then-

Mari screams as her brother topples backwards and into the waves below.

Mermay 2023 - 2nd Week

Day 8 - Dystopian

She looked at the immense metal city farway when he joined her.

"What are you doing here ?" he asked.

"... I don't really know..."

He sighed.

"Then why coming back here ? I do not understand how you can admire the Metalurians and their... their... that thing they call their home."

"You are wrong... I do not admire anything about them..."

"Then, why ?"

She turned towards him, showing all the sadness in her eyes.

"I pity them..."

Day 9 - Heartbreak

And here is out first spoiler for Out of the Abyss !

Yes. The merman on the left is indeed Humphrey. Why ? How ? That, however, will not be answered during Mermay. =)

As for the prompt of the day, it happens that the other merman on the right, Leviathan, had formed a strong bound with Humphrey, when the latter had hidden his true nature all this time.

This drawing representes the very moment where the mask falls off.

Day 10 - Celestial

As I searched an idea for the prompt, I learned that there exists a species of goldfish called the celestial. As much as I wasn't inpired to make a merfolk based on them, I however found the idea of giant celestial fishes flying in the sky interesting.

And to justify this absurd idea, I thought having Shichi, character of my Yume Nikki Fangame project, accompanying them in the skies with her mermaid effect was perfect !

I'll probably add that scene in the game itself whenever I finally work on it again.

Day 11 - Villain

Out of the Abyss spoiler once more !

I present to you Charybdis. A real sea witch.

This sperm whale mermaid has a pronounced taste for demanding the eyes of her victims as payment. She sometimes take more than that if they refuse to pay, or just if she's really, really hungry. Poor unfortunate souls.

It isn't surprising that the Slime Girls do not want to be associated with the likes of her, even if, let's be honest, they did not react any better when they were denied payment.

Day 12 - Companion

Out of the Abyss spoiler !

Here is how Leviathan met Humphrey before the events of the drawing of day 9.

One day, a humpback whale merman arrived in the village where Leviathan lives. He said his name was "Cheeky". Both quickly learned to know eachother, as they were the only whale merman of all Deep Well.

Leviathan thought he could trust him...

Day 13 - Old Money

It's a fashion style characterised by elegance and timelessness (thanks Google).

I just so happened to have a merman character who likes to wear this kind of clothing, so this drawing happened naturally.

Oh, and his name is Bill. Believe it or not, he's based on the blob sculpin.

Day 14 - Mama

Shichi finds an old memory deep into underwater caves...

Mermay 2023 - 2ème semaine

Jour 8 - Dystopique

Elle regardait l'immense ville de métal au loin quand il la rejoignit.

"Que fais-tu ici ?" lui demanda-t-il.

"... Je ne sais pas vraiment..."

Il soupira.

"Pourquoi alors revenir ici ? Je ne comprends pas comment tu peux admirer les Métaluriens et leur... leur... cette chose qu'ils appellent leur foyer."

"Tu te trompes... Je ne n'admire rien chez eux..."

"Alors, pourquoi ?"

Elle se tourna vers lui, montrant toute la tristesse dans ses yeux.

"J'ai pitié d'eux..."

Jour 9 - Crève-Cœur

Et voici notre premier spoiler pour Out of the Abyss !

Oui. Le triton sur la gauche est bel et bien Humphrey. Pourquoi ? Comment ? Ça par contre, cela ne sera pas révélé durant Mermay. =)

Quant au thème du jour, il se trouve que l'autre triton sur la droite, Léviathan, avait forgé un lien très fort avec Humphrey, alors que ce dernier avait cacher sa vrai nature pendant tout ce temps.

Ce dessin représente le moment où le masque tombe.

Jour 10 - Céleste

En cherchant une idée pour ce thème, j'ai appris qu'il existe une espèce de poisson rouge appeler le poisson céleste. Autant je n'était pas inspirer de faire une sirène basée dessus, autant je trouvait l'idée de poissons céleste géants volant dans le ciel très intéressant.

Et pour justifier cette idée absurde, je me suis dit que d'avoir Shichi, personnage pour mon projet de Yume Nikki Fangame, sous sa forme de sirène les accompagnant dans les cieux était parfait !

J’ajouterai probablement cette scène dans le jeu lui-même quand je travaillerai enfin à nouveau dessus.

Jour 11 - Méchant

Out of the Abyss spoiler à nouveau !

Je vous présente Charybde. Une vrai sorcière des mers.

Cette sirène-cachalot à un goût prononcé pour demander les yeux de ses victimes en guise de paiement. Il lui arrive de prendre plus que ça s'ils refusent de payer, ou juste quand elle a vraiment, vraiment très faim. Pauvres âmes en perdition.

Il n'est pas étonnant que les Slime Girls ne veulent pas être associées à quelqu'un comme elle, même si, soyons honnêtes, elles n'ont pas mieux réagi face au refus d'être payer.

Jour 12 - Compagnon

Out of the Abyss spoiler !

Voici comment Lévianthan a connu Humphrey avant ce qu'il se passe dans le dessin du jour 9.

Un jour, un triton-baleine à bosse est arrivé dans le village où Léviathan vit. Il s'est présenté sous le nom de "Cheeky". Très vite, ils apprirent à se connaître l'un l'autre, tout deux étant les seuls tritons-baleine de tout le Puit Profond.

Léviathan croyait pouvoir lui faire confiance...

Jour 13 - Old Money

C'est un style vestimentaire qui caractérise une certaine élégance et intemporalité (merci Google).

J’avais justement un personnage de triton qui aime porter des vêtements de ce style, donc ce dessin c'est fait assez naturellement.

Oh, et son nom est Bill. Croyez-le ou non, il est basé sur le chabot blob.

Jour 14 - Mama

Shichi trouve un vieux souvenir au fond de grottes sous-marines...
