Once again, I’m typing this out just minutes after seeing the new pages. Because I saw this singular sliver of pink on Sonic’s chest behind the text bubble and now I’m going g full Game Theory Mode.

(Don’t know how messy this is gonna be so bear with me please)

ALSO HAPPY NEW YEAR HOPE 2024 IS GOING WELL FOR YOU SO FAR!!!!

So! It’s uh… It’s been a while since Sonic last slept. I think the last time we saw him get any proper rest was before him and Shadow left for Holoska. We don’t know exactly how much time had past for them when they were in the cavern, but we can safely assume it was more than just 2 or 3 hours. They were most likely there for nearly ten, given the villager’s reaction to them returning. And then they immediately had to go fight Omega, or at least Sonic did, and that was a whole battle full of adrenaline and anger fueled by the previous fight between Sonic and Shadow. So by this point, I’m not surprised to see Sonic knocked out cold.

What I am shocked to see however, is that little teeny-tiny sliver of pink that I mentioned on Sonic’s chest… What’s even more intriguing is the fact that Sonic’s entire face is obscured by either the panel borders, or the text bubbles. This obviously and unfortunately means that Dark Gaia’s influence on Sonic is getting stronger and stronger by the day, and the hedgehog’s recent fights have had a huge impact. This also means Sonic can’t hide from his friends anymore, and he’ll likely be avoidant towards them altogether if he can.

Obviously though, this will only make things worse for him and Shadow since Sonic’s negative emotions are what is making the influence stronger. In this sense, Sonic is making himself dangerous, he’s turning himself into a weapon. This is actually making me think: What if Omega being influenced by Dark Gaia was just a test? Just a warning by Dark Gaia that showed Sonic what would happen if he fell too deep, if he succumbed too much. Omega lost his autonomy to the God of Sadness himself, so why can’t Sonic…?

Oki ignoring that terrible yet seamless transition, let’s talk about Team Dark because they deserve some love right now in these trying times. (Istg you and 2 whole other people are keeping the Team Dark fans afloat) First up, Shadow because he’s been in more panels than I can count lmao

Shadow, as someone who can relate to Sonic to some extent, feels this giant weight whenever something bad happens to him. He feels all the pressure build up into one giant boulder that he’s struggling to carry, and if he doesn’t get help soon, that boulder will crush him. Of course, the Ultimate Lifeform doesn’t care about that, doesn’t care about anything but Sonic right now, because he’s going through something similar and it’s just too much for Shadow to see a reflection of himself in the very person he sought to destroy just a couple years prior-

But then the weight gets lifted. Just a little bit, just so much to make it only a little lighter. But it’s lifted regardless, and when Shadow turns he sees Rouge. The brains of the group. The one who brought Team Dark together in the first place. The one who only knew a fraction about Shadow’s past and yet stuck by his side anyway.

The only one who hasn’t been directly affected by Dark Gaia until now. (Except for Tails and Knuckles but we don’t care about them right now)

Sonic is not gonna be the same when he wakes up. He’s gonna look and feel completely different and he’s gonna be so confused and hurt and scared. But Shadow and Rouge and all his other friends are gonna be there for him when he needs them most, and that will be enough.

I wish I could say more on these pages because OMG THREE PAGES IN ONE UPDATE HUH EMERALD ARE YOU TRYING TO SPOIL US ARE YOU TRYING TO BUTTER UP TO US BECAUSE IT IS FRIGGIN WORKING. But with the new year comes a bunch of other thoughts that cloud your brain and there’s suddenly no more room for the really important things. Like anthropomorphic little animals that turn into bigger furries somehow and then harness the power of life itself to defeat villainy and then eat chili dogs for their every meal. Totally important, 100%.

Okay, so my hatred for the idea of cop Dick Grayson is well known, but given a recent mini surge of fics with him in this role because of the focus on cops at the moment (not any one in particular, I’ve just noticed over the past couple weeks that I’ve been seeing as much of cop Dick Grayson as I have pretty much over the past couple months before that), I just want to toss a reminder out there for people who really only know of his time as a cop because of fanfics:

1) He was a cop for less than a decade in real time, and hasn’t been one in almost twenty years. Move on.

2) We blame Chuck Dixon for making him a cop due to his right wing biases. The other writer primarily responsible for writing Dick while he was a cop was Devin Grayson. The writer who ALSO made him Romani.

Meaning:

a) Making Dick Grayson a cop was LITERALLY a form of cop propaganda. It was an extremely conservative writer taking a character WHO HE HIMSELF HAD WRITTEN SUFFERING AT THE HANDS OF THE SYSTEM AS A KID - given that Dixon ALSO penned the juvie origin for Dick - and making him grow up to be a cop, basically saying ‘see, if even a kid who suffered because of the system can have the awareness to grow up and see the system isn’t all bad and just needs good people working in it....makes you think, doesn’t it?’

Well, no, Chuck, it mostly makes me think you’re a dumbass who has no idea what he’s talking about and has no business writing a defense of a system you’ve probably never suffered under by using a character who HAS and thus who readers who have also suffered under that system specifically relate to BECAUSE of that, BUT I DIGRESS. 

b) The other half of cop Dick Grayson’s tenure was written by the woman who made Dick Grayson Romani, meaning it co-existed with the time Dick was most distinctly and actively written as Romani and invested in his Romani heritage ON THE PAGE.

Translation: COP DICK GRAYSON IS NOT WHITE.

Cop Dick Grayson IS Romani Dick Grayson. Again, standard seemingly necessary disclaimer that you can do literally anything you want in fanfic, but I’m just pointing this out to mention that if you want to write Dick as a cop while white, its not a ton different than just deciding to write Jason becoming a cop because his OWN background and experiences make him think ‘well things might have been better if there were more cops who actually CARED about the people who live in my old neighborhood’ or like, Tim growing up to become a cop because he stans intrusive surveillance.

Cop Dick Grayson is Romani Dick Grayson who is WELL aware of the realities of being a character of color in a white dominated institution that is responsible for the persecution of millions, and here’s something white writers in particular really really REALLY need to keep in mind, because its 110% a core part of where Devin Grayson fucked the hell up:

This is NOT to take anything away from the focus on BLM or police brutality against black people in particular, but IN THE CONTEXT OF FICS ABOUT THESE CHARACTERS, pleeeeeease be mindful of the fact that the Romani people have been heavily persecuted and oppressed by law enforcement across multiple nations for decades and decades as well. They have a HUGELY contentious relationship and history with cops of pretty much all nationalities - 

AND IT WAS AN ABSOLUTE FUCKING TRAVESTY THAT DEVIN GRAYSON FAILED TO TAKE THIS INTO ACCOUNT WHILE WRITING A CHARACTER AS BOTH A COP AND ROMANI AT THE SAME TIME.

Making Dick Grayson in specific a cop and writing him as one for almost a decade was a goddamn mess on SO many levels, and ending that for whatever reasons remains one of the best things DC has ever done for the character AND his fans. Now if fandom would only similarly cut him a goddamn break and let it goooooooooooooooo.

I usually focus on why cop Dick Grayson is so gross through a lens of how tone deaf it is given his childhood experiences with the system, because I don’t like stepping outside of my lane whenever possible, and this post is already more out of my lane than I typically care to go. But just because my focus is primarily on situational factors in Dick’s narrative and how they SHOULD affect his narrative choices IMO, that doesn’t mean those are the ONLY factors that make cop Dick Grayson so fucked up - its just those other ones, like his Romani heritage, aren’t really my conversation to have.

They are still very much there regardless.

But make no mistake, by pretty much all canon base material, unless you’re writing a version of Dick who is specifically white and specifically a cop just because you picked his name out of a hat to be the character in that role for the narrative you want to write - and I HMM heavily in your direction if this is anyone’s claim -  

Cop Dick Grayson, based on the time when he was ACTUALLY a cop, is by DEFAULT also Romani Dick Grayson. Even if you don’t explicitly name him as Romani in your fic, based on any given reader’s familiarity with the comics in which he was actually a cop, chances are, your reader is just as likely to assume he’s Romani as they are that he’s white, because the two things co-existed in his narrative.

(PS - If you’re also writing Dick’s support system within the cops as being Amy Rohrback and Officer Gannon, Gannon’s an explicitly gay character ALSO created as literal cop propaganda - see gay kids, even gay people can grow up to be cops and its all good, we’re all one people, blue people - well Gannon is FIRMLY in my lane to mention that hey don’t forget about cops’ historic and ongoing persecution of LGBTQ+ people and apathy about coming to their defense, consider maybe not trotting out gay characters as props to prop up police as nice friendlies especially if that’s literally all that gay character exists to be in your fic and has no real narrative or presence beyond ‘gay cop who is nice and charming’ kthxbai).

If you didn’t know this before, that’s fandom’s fuck-up, and now you know.

Which brings me to my final point:

If you are white in particular, PLEASE check yourself before you decide to throw in with police propaganda and contribute by actively writing outside your lane and choosing Romani character Dick Grayson as your mouthpiece of choice to defend police in any narratives you might be inclined to write right now with a ‘more balanced view of the zeitgeist’ or whatever the fuck you want to call it.

Co-opting a character of color to defend an institution whose brutalities against people of color are NOT something you can claim experience with, is like, so many light years from being a good choice you might as well be writing from fucking Naboo.

IF YOU WANT TO FOCUS ON COMIC BOOK STATUS QUO FROM TWENTY YEARS AGO IN EVERY SINGLE FIC, JUST FYI, JASON IS STILL DEAD, DAMIAN WON’T BE CREATED FOR ANOTHER TEN YEARS, TIM LOVES AND ADORES HIS BIG BROTHER, AND STEPH IS IN AFRICA WHILE PLAYING THE PART OF LIVING DEAD GIRL BUT HEY, YOU DO YOU.

A little F•R•I•E•N•D•S survey just because.

Characters Favourite character? I relate to Monica the most but my favorite has got to be Chandler. Favourite male character? Chandler by a long shot. Favourite female character? Monica. Man, three questions in and I’ve already got my biases established ha. Favourite non-main character? Probably Jack Geller. Least favourite character (main)? Joey. I was always too impatient for his dumb ass. He’s adorable though.

Least favourite character (not main)? EMILY for days. They wasted so many episodes and storylines dragging her ass through them. I also kinda hated Amy. Funniest? Chandler, and this is going to be unpopular: Ross. He’s funny when he’s not being a jackass. Sweetest? ...Chandler. That episode where Monica ‘freaked’ him out by pretending to book a wedding venue when it turned out Chandler loved the place and ended up proposing to her was the sweetest. Best looking? Rachel. Girl’s style was always on point. Most mature? Phoebe trumps them all so hard. She lived through the Civil War, World War I, lost her mom, lived on the streets, and did so many shady things before landing in that apartment of theirs – she’s a kook but she’s a hella smart kook. Most immature? Has to be a mix of Joey and Rachel. And Ross.

Most annoying? Joey had his annoying moments especially the episode where he tries to speak French!!!!!!!!! but I love all of them just the same. Relationships Favourite couple? CHANDLER AND MONICA Least favourite couple? Joey and Rachel when they got together. I liked the slow burn that preceded the whole thing, but when the writers mashed them together, the execution was just ughhhh. I hated Ross/Julie, Monica/Pete, and Ross/Emily too. Favourite couple that wasn’t a main couple? Oh oof, I guess I’ve listed them all there. ^ Couple you wish would’ve happened? Chandler and Rachel. Their cheesecake episode was awesome.

Best friendship? Monica/Chandler and Joey/Chandler. The two that had the worst friendship? Phoebe and Ross were the two that just clicked the least lmao. Ross was too serious and too nerdy and Phoebe was more liberal and very eccentric. They had that debate on evolution once which I found hard to watch lmao, and not to mention that Ross is the biggest baby in the group whereas Phoebe had to grow up earlier than all of them because of her awful childhood. Couple you’re surprised happened? Rachel and Joey, obviously. Overrated couple? Ross and Rachel. They’re so hyped up when in reality, they were on and off for ten deadass seasons??? It was stretched for so long that it’s very easy to lose interest in it. Most underrated friendship? Phoebe and Ross, I guess. They weren’t very close, but I remember how Ross got Phoebe a bike when he found out she never had her own. That gets overshadowed a lot but I found that episode very sweet. Phoebe/Joey is also pretty underrated. You and them Which character would you be? I’m already Monica. Which character would you wanna be bffs with? Rachel hahaha. Monica’s too high-strung, Phoebe’s crazy, I’d get annoyed with Ross’ bitchfests, Joey is a little immature for my liking, and I feel like I’ll eventually get offended by Chandler’s sarcasm, so I’d go with Rachel.   Who would you date? Chandler. Who would get on your nerves? Joey or Ross. Who can you relate to the most? Monica AF. Organized, obsessed with weddings, obsessed with kids, loves spreadsheets, makes everything a competition, loves food, the mom of the group...all of this is me. Saddest moment or episode? Monica finding out they can’t have kids, Phoebe having to part with the triplets, Erica almost giving up on Chandler and Monica because they lied, and the final goshdarn episode. Moment or episode that melted your heart? When Monica made Thanksgiving dinner, only for Joey to ruin it because Monica had to answer the phone, then when Chandler told on Joey, she was like “I don’t care, the adoption agency called and we’re having a baby” :’( Best episode/moment? I can think of so many depending on what kind of episode you’re asking for, but the first ones I can think of off the top of my head are the quiz, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s resolutions episodes, and the one where Chandler and Phoebe pretend to be into each other to see who breaks first. Cringiest moment? A lot of Season 10 stuff was cringey just cos everything felt forced by that point. I also didn’t like the scene where Chandler was checking out their home-sitter’s bra because Monica was convinced she was stealing from her wardrobe lmao. Oh and the one with Ross’ list about Rachel. OH and Joey failing so bad at French. They def had their cringey moments lmao. Worst moment/episode? The one where Pete decides to be a UFC star(????) was so fucking random. There’s also an episode that shows their alternative lives - Monica was still chubby, Phoebe was a bitchy executive...I forget the rest because I’ve only seen it once cos the whole thing was pretty pointless. Best season? The ones in the middle. Best quote? “It’s an electric drill. You get me, YOU KILL ME” or “Gum would be perfection.” Joey Best trait? He’s adorably clumsy and he’s also pretty confident. Worst trait? He has his creepy tendencies, he doesn’t share food, and he’s too stupid for my humor to appreciate him. Who should he have ended up with? Definitely Phoebe. Was he just a player or a sweetheart? Meh. He was a player. If Matt LeBlanc couldn’t play him, who should’ve? Chandler His best season? I’m not familiar which season it is but it has to be the one where he decided he was going to marry Monica. Chandler was always the most insecure out of the six who had a lot of childhood issues and as a result, was perpetually afraid of committing and being serious and actually being an adult. Deciding that he knew he wanted to marry Monica is such an underrated pivotal moment for him. Funny or annoying? FUNNY.  Why did he have trouble with girls? Because he’s so awkward.  If Matthew Perry couldn’t play him who should’ve? Best trait? He really cares.

Should it have ended sooner, later or when it did? They ended it perfectly. Some elements of season 10 already felt inorganic and unnecessary, but if we didn’t get the last season then we never would’ve seen Chandler and Monica’s twins and Rachel getting off the plane.
