i already heard abt this from someone on tiktok but it was still a little disappointing to me that they changed namis story. like don’t get me wrong it was amazing and i did end up crying at one point but like

the tragedy in the live action of nami sacrificing herself for her village, and the villagers not knowing abt her deal with arlong and hating her for it, thinking she actually joined up with arlong, including her own sister, was good but i prefer the animanga version. because not only is there the tragedy of namis abuse at arlongs hands and being forced to work for her mothers killer, and the villagers hating her, there’s the reveal that they knew all along. it’s like a double whammy of tragedy

nami works to free the village, with this basically impossible deal that arlong had no intention of honoring, while shouldering the villagers hatred, because even if they don’t know what she’s doing, it’s her home and family and she’ll save them no matter what. only the whole time, they knew exactly what she was doing, because genzo got suspicious on his own and made nojiko tell him, and they’ve been trying to make her hate them so she’ll give up on saving them and run away to live her own life. it’s just sooooo good. the tragedy of both sides trying to save each other and accepting that they need to be hated to do that, because they want the best for the other even if that means theyll never see each other again. because the villagers wanted nami to run and live her own life, and if she did then they knew she could never come back again because of arlong obvs. and on the other side i fully believe if namis deal had worked out she would’ve left cocoyasi and never come back bc that’s what she believed the villagers would want

auuughhh it’s just sooooo gooood. both trying to do what they think is best for the other but being too stubborn to try and work out a better way. being in a shitty situation and trying desperately to do what you can even if it hurts you

and also the individual relationships! like i wasn’t a huge fan of the fact that nojiko didn’t know abt the deal and also hated nami. i rlly like how in the manga nami still has one person she can trust and rely on even if nojiko can’t really help out, and she won’t let her try to help. and nojiko watching her sister work herself into the ground and not being able to do anything except have a home for her to come back too. and i believe she also knew about genzo and the villagers plans too, so seeing nami hurt by the villagers hatred and knowing it’s false but not being able to tell her

and genzo too! he was the one who realized that nami working with arlong was suspicious, made nojiko tell him about the deal, and came up with the whole plan. because before arlong came he knew nojiko and nami best he was basically their dad. he was watching over her when she was with arlong and he saw her being hurt but he couldn’t do anything!! auuughh!!! he wore that stupid pinwheel on his hat for her!! bc it made her laugh!!

in conclusion i liked the live action but im sad that they took away a lot of the depth of some of the side characters and boiled it down to just “oh yeah they all hate her for real”

I think about the relationship between the Strawhats and the Marines a lot, because despite what we'd all like to think, despite what dialogue DIRECTLY from the show might say, they are not completely enemies.

Are there a lot of figures within the marines that Luffy would personally like to beat up and detests? Absolutely. Does that mean he sees all the marines as his enemies? No.

Luffy and co. have help guided quite a few marines to a correct path. Some of them even have friends, family, or odd relations with some people in the marines. When Luffy shot down the World Government flag, I think some of us forget that A) He was doing it to show how little he cared about the power system, especially if it was to save a friend. And B) The World Government = / = the Marines. The Marines are the government's lap dogs, they work with them, take their orders, etc, but at the end of the day, they're meant to stand for something different, to stand for justice, and a lot of them DO try to help civilians and be heroes to those around them.

They are just very limited in how they can do that.

Luffy has no limits. He has no superiors. Piracy lets him do whatever he wants, and he uses that freedom to save lives. So when I see arcs like Dressrosa, where the marines are fighting desperately to keep people from getting hurt, or Alabasta, when the Marines actually sided directly with the Strawhats, I think... No, the marines are not the Strawhat's enemies, they are often, in fact, quite his reluctant supporters.

Marines don't like pirates. No one is supposed to like pirates. But for a man like Luffy, who is using the title of pirate to change the world, any marine or figure that really wants to bring about justice would look up to him. Coby looks up to him, Fujitora, who is much stronger than all of them, looks up to him. And even small-time marines that barely know him, in some way, realize that he's doing what they can't. Because none of them have the bravery to step outside the limelight, to be called "evil," while actually saving the day. And I think it's oddly poetic that the only ones who can see the hero mantle he wears are the ones forced to don that mantle every day, for a society they often fail to protect. That the ones who truly know how great Monkey D. Luffy is feel indebted, frustrated, and second-best to him, to (who they believe is) their enemy.

In an odd, roundabout sort of way, a lot of the greater marines and the Strawhats are rivals, because even though they antagonize each other, they're often working toward the same goal. They always strive to fight the good fight and save the same people, and at the end of the day, Luffy and many of the marines have a similar arc: to reform the system that's hurting people.

The only difference is Luffy is doing it from the outside, and he does a much better job of it because of that freedom.

When do you think gear 5 will be animated?

im so glad you asked bc i did the math based on how many chapters are left in between the most recent episodes chapter and gear 5s chapter (we're 8.5 chapters away from the initial awakening and 9.5 from the episode when we see him use its abilities) some episodes are around .8 chapters and others cant be up to 1.5. if every episode until then is .8 chapters it'll be in 12 weeks, and if every episode is 1.5 chapters it'll be around 6-7, and the average of that is 9.5 (which would probably be the most likely) but its really any where between 6-12 weeks (i have autism)
