I feel like the last year has been a great push for me to slowly detach myself from giant companies and ensure what I do is in my control and ownership
Finally switched over to linux permanently
switched to firefox
enabled adblocker, sponsor blockers, and tracker removers
disabled autoplay and the recommendations sidebar on YouTube (highly highly encourage, though I still keep the homepage open so I can choose when to browse new suggested content rather than it pestering me)
downloaded all my tumblr posts and now host them parallel on my website (stuck here until we find some decentralized way of doing social media right)
cleared out 99% of my online storage to now be on multiple hard-drive backups
downloaded locally all my music
removed myself from basically every data tracking social media platform except this and YouTube
And now currently I'm trying to consolidate all my feeds into just an RSS reader.
It takes a long time and a lot of planning, but its very rewarding to take control over what you want to see, how you see it, how its formatted, ect. I find these are my steps to an easy transition off a certain service:
Download all your data and back it up. Now your account can be deleted at any time with no remorse.
Find browser extensions that enhance and modify the experience to what you might need. Use that to tangibly guide your preferences. Go ahead and remove the app on your phone if its there.
Research every alternative service and try them out. Begin moving certain activity exclusively to the alternative. Take time getting used to it and see if its better to try more alternatives.
Completely jump ship, delete the account, move all feeds or settings over.
Its an ongoing process but there's still probably a few more years of this to go through. Future plans are:
Completely remove all prior emails and self host a new one
Get off Discord entirely except for running the wiki server. It sucks that Discord is so prevalent. Probably move to various forums. Maybe look into some sort of forum management software such as how RSS feeds tame articles and videos into one place.
Setup adblockers directly into my router so ads won't even appear on phones.
Setup my phone to just straight up also run linux. There's a few mobile-designed linux platforms to look into until I decide.

I hate to be the bearer of frustrating news, but in case some of you who frequent Founders Online (like I do) and have noticed an extreme spike of 503 “Service Temporarily Unavailable” errors, making access to the site impossible for periods of time, the team posted the explanation below:
Tumblr media
Founders Online performance issues
19 May 2025: Founders Online is experiencing periodic degraded performance owing to extreme spikes in traffic caused by excessive website crawling, associated with content scooping from AI platforms and other indexers. We are working on a viable fix within the constraints of our server resources.
This is very unfortunate and very disgusting. I’m glad that they are trying to fix the issue, but it breaks my heart that they even have to put in the effort. From personal experience working as a student technician in my university’s Preservation Department, where my primary task is to digitize all sorts of old materials—books, newspapers, photographs, etc, and collaborate on how those items should be handled and scanned so that their digital copies can be presented and made accessible in the right ways, it takes A LOT of work just to digitize one item. Almost all of the documents you see on Founders Online are digital copies of the book pages from where these transcriptions originated—series’ of the founders papers that were printed in the last 70-80 years by university presses. Books that, when Founders was launched 15 years ago, were all between a few years and many decades old, and difficult for the general public to access. Of course, I don’t know the Founders team’s exact process for making the archive when they first started, nor do I claim to be the preservation expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I have a big hunch that it took many hundreds of hours, and likely continues to do so for the remaining volumes they intend to add to the site, to make Founders Online as it appears and maintain its usually fast performance.
AI in general frustrates me, but to see that this extremely valuable archive has now gotten caught in the scooping net makes me equally sad and angry. If you want to gather documents from the site, but will later be offline, you have the ability through the site to download PDF files of individual documents and print them. Most of the material is also in the public domain as well (not all, however—any annotations to a document are copyright of the institution which originally published those physical volumes I mentioned). AI scooping this archive for information to feed to language learning models is a waste of time, energy, and money, and is a violation of copyright law. At the risk of causing performance issues and affecting the servers that make Founders possible, this activity is potentially detrimental to historic preservation and access to historical knowledge. Those hundreds of hours the teams behind the site have worked also come into play: this site is their baby, their hard work, and it’s being stolen. And as a result, everyone’s ability to easily use the site without issue is being affected.
I am extremely fortunate to be in a position where I have been able to acquire a personal backup system for what I primarily use Founders for (my volumes of The Papers of Alexander Hamilton), and more so in that through my university, I have access to the rest of the physical series that make up the archive. So this current issue with the site being slow on performance and frequently down does not inconvenience me much. But this is a privilege. Founders Online was created to get around that privilege and allow for everyone (with an Internet connection) to access these important historical documents. I cannot hammer down to you just how important and valuable that is. Founders Online is an invaluable resource that deserves to be maintained and protected. I’m thankful that the team behind it are working diligently to do just that, but they should never have had to combat AI stealing their hard work and affecting the usability of the site in the first place.

your 3DS is OFFLINE . . .
Tumblr media
(mucho texto below)
On April 8th, 2024, the online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U were shutdown. This affects online play across all games, and SpotPass, used in apps like Swapdoodle; this renders online-required games unplayable, most notably Nintendo Badge Arcade.
As of the date I'm writing this not aaall online features are unaccessible, Friends List seem to be working, Pokémon Bank is still running, usable for free and compatible with Pokémon Home, and you can download updates and games from the eShop (only if you bought them before the eShop shutdown from March 27th, 2023...), but there's no guarantee those will last much longer.
anyways Pretendo Network is a replacement for Nintendo Network that not only aims to restore online play, but also other abandoned features such as Miiverse and the Wara Wara Plaza.
Setting up Pretendo is pretty easy, there's a guide on its website for both Wii U, 3DS and their respective emulators, and you don't even need modding on Wii U for it to work (with some limitations), but you might as well do it since it's so easy (Wii U modding guide - 3DS modding guide)
Currently Pretendo is in a beta state and active development so it's not really a fully realized replacement yet, but a couple of popular games are supported well enough at the moment, like Mario Kart 7, Splatoon and Super Mario Maker (personally i care more about pokemon gen 6 and mh4u and idk if those will be supported aaaa oh well).
Since this is technically a whole different server, some things don't carry over from you Nintendo Network ID to your Pretendo Network ID, like your badges(you should backup your badges before using Pretendo on 3DS) or your Friends List... so I gotta fill it up again! my new 3DS Friend Code is 3878-6726-5312 and my PNID is dibudani (for Wii U), add me right now !!
"Why is the little wifi guy so happy?" idk. why was toad happy when Club Nintendo was discontinued?

Russian state media company VGTRK, which owns and operates the country's main national TV stations, was targeted in a massive cyberattack on Monday that a Ukrainian government source said Kyiv's hackers had caused.
The website of VGTRK, the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, was not loading early on Monday and its Rossiya-24 rolling 24-hours news channel was not available online. "Our state media holding, one of the largest, has faced an unprecedented hacker attack on its digital infrastructure," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, saying VGTRK was working to overcome the consequences. "Specialists are working to find out all the circumstances, to understand where the traces left behind by those who organized this hacker attack on the critical infrastructure object lead." VGTRK’s news channels provide many Russians with news on the war in Ukraine. A Ukrainian government source said Ukrainian hackers were responsible for the incident, which coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin's 72nd birthday.
Hackers ‘congratulate’ Putin
"Ukrainian hackers 'congratulated' Putin on his birthday by carrying out a large-scale attack on the all-Russian state television and radio broadcasting company," the source told Reuters, asking not to be named.
Russian news outlet Gazeta.ru cited an unnamed source as saying that the cyberattack had targeted the online and internal services of VGTRK, which also owns and operates radio stations and many regional TV channels.
"Online broadcasting and internal services are down and even the Internet and telephony are not working. It's going to take a long time to fix," it quoted the source as saying.
"I heard they (the hackers) wiped everything from the servers, including backups. They've been working in lockdown since six in the morning."
Speaking in Moscow, Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, did not say who was behind the attack but told reporters that Russian media had long been targets for what she called "the collective West" and said what had happened was part of "a hybrid war".
Moscow would raise the cyberattack in all international forums, including at UNESCO, the U.N. agency which promotes freedom of speech, Zakharova said.

I'd rather have been asleep at 1:40am instead of laying there thinking about how uncertain and scared I feel right now, but I was laying there feeling uncertain and scared and realized I have no idea what people that work in offices DO.
I've only worked retail/customer service outside of the military and even while working in an office in the military, I had nothing to do.
At first I was put in one office that didn't need me so they just said "Here... Manage these files." and I was like "..... how, exactly??" and ended up retyping the labels for all of them because some were wrong and there was nothing else for me to do.
Then they gave me the personnel database. I rebuilt it and made it accessible in two days, and that was it. After that, I filled out orders for one person once. The only way I had anything to DO was by becoming the mail clerk which is another customer-facing, cyclically repetitive task that is never done and needs redone in the same way every day. After the mail was done, which took about two hours, I would leave or go sit in my office with nothing to do because the database was my whole job and it was DONE. It wouldn't need changed until the software was updated and that wouldn't be for years.
I had a once-a-week task of making a physical copy of the server which meant going into a closet, popping a tape into a machine, and waiting. I had to sit there with it. There was nothing else to do. I got in trouble for coloring in a coloring book while waiting for the backups to write and I was like "........ What am I SUPPOSED to do, then?????" "Work on the database!" "It's DONE........"
If it's SQL stuff do people sit around until the boss says "Hey, I need to know how much we spent on avocado toast this month." and then whip up a report real quick and wait for the boss to want a report on something else? What about when the boss doesn't need a report?
What do IT people do when things are working smoothly?
I can understand data entry, that would be like "Here we have all these waivers that were signed for the indoor trampoline business and these need plugged into the database manually because the online one was down so they're on paper." or something like that but what about when the online waivers do work what do they do then?
?????
It's like that episode of Seinfeld where George gets an office job but just sits there all day because he has no idea what he's supposed to be doing, no one tells him, and he eventually gets fired because he didn't do anything.

Solved problems
Some things computers should be able to Just Do but for some reason cannot:
Large file transfers Okay, this is kinda the big one. The 300mb file transfer on the network, if you will. Arguably it's the entire point of the Internet: a resilient communications network which allows transfer of large quantities of data over arbitrary media. And yet this is the one thing which computers persistently cannot do well, or at least not easily and natively without blood sacrifice and a credit card.
Print Getting a computer to print is one of the most frustrating things, and I do not know why. Especially inasmuch as the overwhelming majority of printouts are simply black&white text on a piece of standard office paper. This should be very straightforward and in fact so simple that most people never have to think about a printer driver, in the same way that you don't have to think about a monitor driver or a keyboard driver.
Actually shut down It should be possible to simply, without performing a dance, holding the button for precisely 23.52 seconds, or anything else, turn off your computer. This should not be a thing the device can block or prevent. There should be a button or switch - maybe with a safety cover to prevent accidents - to interrupt power. Even on a laptop. It should not go into sleep or hibernation mode. It should not be able to come back on. It should not be in a listening state. It should be physically impossible for anyone to use the device to listen in on you because there is no electricity going to the internals.
Gracefully wake up from sleep mode On the other hand, if a computer does go into any kind of hibernation or sleep mode, it should gracefully return to operational status. There should not be a risk of it being caught in a state where it's not off but you also cannot wake it up. This is my computer, not my spouse at 6am on a Monday. My computer does not need coffee, and will not be getting any. If it cannot reliably return from sleep mode, it's just off but wasting power.
Show me the thing I was just looking at Another big one. It's entirely possible, both online and off, for a computer to display faster than a user can process. "Wait, go back" should be an option. It should not ever be "Well, you scrolled past it, it's gone forever."
Easily search the files I have on my computer This one... used to be better? Right now at least WIndows really wants to read the content of files, so if I'm looking for my 2025 Dental bills, it tries to show me every file I have which includes "dental" and "2025" in the text of the file, and does not just show me the four files I actually named some variant of "2025Dentalblah". This should be easy, and it is not.
Locate duplicate files Maybe this one is just me, but... due to migrations and backups, sometimes I end up with several copies of the same files. It should be really easy to identify these files. I mean, there are checksums, okay? This is a thing a computer can do natively and very easily. Yet for some reason there's no simple way to do this, and even duplicate locator utilities are weird and don't work right.
Identify and display files File formats are not a new concept. It should be exceedingly rare to encounter a file format which a computer cannot readily identify and display. Not "And then run as a program" but simply "Oh, this is a quicktime file, I gotcha boss." For a computer today to encounter a file format it can't identify should be a Major Mystery and not an everyday occurrence.
Not allow evil background shit On the flip side, there's a lot of background activity which ipso facto should not be allowed. There's no reason for an application to be contacting a server every 500ms, there's no reason a data file format should have the ability to run a service. These should not be things at all. And these are the source of so many security holes which could simply be closed by not allowing arbitrary code execution.
Now, I know most of these have known solutions, but if those solutions are more than two steps, they're dumb. Because these should not be complicated at all. These should be simply and native and not require effort. These are not new problems, and should have been solved a while ago.

Top WordPress Plugins to Supercharge Your Website in 2024
Tumblr media
Building and maintaining a WordPress site is both exciting and challenging. While the platform provides a robust foundation, the true power of WordPress lies in its plugins. From enhancing site functionality to improving user experience, WordPress plugins are indispensable tools for developers, businesses, and bloggers alike.
