#onlyinpittsburgh Would you meet Russell Crowe.

Since moving to Pittsburgh, I've been working as an extra to earn a little bit of moolah and to learn more about an industry that has always fascinated me: film. Around April, I worked as an extra on the set of “Fathers and Daughters”. I played a nurse (I joked with one of my friends that I’m already getting extra type-casted!) The movie is set partly in the ‘80s and partly during current day but that day we were shooting in the ‘80s. Even though we were shooting a scene for probably 10 seconds of film, everyone was transported to a different time. Copious amounts of hairspray were used for each scene. It was amazing how much detail the hair and makeup people spent with just the extras even though we’ll be nothing more than a fuzzy dot on the screen.

After 2 hours in hair and makeup we finally made it onto the set. We were shooting in a hospital near East Liberty with half of the hospital wing blocked off for filming. Actual hospital workers kept peering onto our side of the wing, it felt really cool to be one of the people allowed into the “restricted” section.

So first, the crew needs to set up the scene in terms of light and staging of extras. All of the major actors have “stand-ins” who look similar to the main actors in terms of height and skin tone in order for the crew to correctly set up the light. Setting up a shot can take a long time and the actors can’t be used during that time because it uses up their time and time is money.                                                

After the scene was set up, the main actors came in. I didn’t realize who was in this scene, but then Russell Crowe strolled in, wearing this hospital gown and his makeup all done! This scene was a car crash scene so he had to get the fake blood and bandages on him. He was very polite and even made jokes with the extras who were playing the nurses pushing him on the gurney. I will admit I was slightly jealous of those extras!

Meeting celebrities is a perk, but the greatest part of being an extra is the chance to see people working in a different environment that you’re not used to. If I had never moved to Pittsburgh, I would have never had the chance to work as an extra and I’m really grateful that I had this opportunity!
