OOOOOOOK, so until TWBY Zangetsu remained a single sword but this couldn't continue any further because in order for Nimaya to be able to reforge broken Zanpakutō Ichigo finally needed himself to pick an Asauchi, then tidy up things in his soul-scape thus he butt-kicked him to Ishin, w/o telling him what's the big deal, just waiting for that to happen naturally, and if not then BYE BYE bc he's a damn goblin FYI. I strongly spin spoon in my HC kettle that while he forges he concurrently takes a glimpse into one's soul ( making him able to see HOW the spirit of wielder looks like, by every means he felt there's also someone else 'hiding, waiting', then he saw an old man all Yhwach style-like while Ichi's Asauchi looked completely different and stood stupefied for a fraction: oh ... I see ... now ... It's funny that later Ōetsu became a witness to internal conflict, realizing that giving ground to one and boxing the other was was never meant to be solution so ... each of them needed their own dwelling space / territories without threat of clashing. And what idea could work better than making Zangetsu a dual blade? Based on Ichigo's choice to follow Shinigami's path ... Shiro only grew stronger, chains would not hold him back anymore, if his confrontation with the real 'suppressor' did not work no change would happen or one would had to step aside. Ok, I cannot fully say 'suppressor' because - yeah, while he was... BACK then he was dominating in that chapter of his life and just followed the rules, and again I cannot say one would have to 'leave' because neither of them actually could; both are different yet creating a trinity of sort -> ONE WHOLE.

Aye let's unbuckle our seatbelts as we hit the finish of our (rambling)track. - As for his personal reflection about the blade, Ōetsu, finds Zangetsu(s) interesting, their potential promising and uniqueness of origins doubtless. He thinks each should be handled with delicate respect when approached.

- The shape. Was it a random design choice? Well, yes, and no. Remember how he first crushed the remnants of Ichigo's and Renji's blade? By then he sure had a chance to compose a clear visualization of their original looks, but remodeling broken blade directly at Houou estate meant such alteration would equal rebirth; restyling the majority of the form as we could see (the handle, middle space, mini-Zan, even color of the steel). Sure he drew from the original source of outline while creating design brandly new. Because his Shinigami/Hollow powers merged, and respecting the fact that most Ichigo's releases are Hollow-like in nature the larger blade (Shiro) represents not only the path chosen but where his true strength lies at that MOMENT. Everything is moment-bound and Zanpakutōs are no exception. The old man had to step aside, he was granted his own space while compromised that it was time for Shiro to steal the spotlight. However ( there's always that 'however', innit? lol ) a meticulous master of his craft holds awareness of endangering predisposition coming hand in hand with hybridous duality ( it is different than with other dual-blade wielders like Kyōraku who deals solely with his Shinigami-powers ) Ichi-chan here has to keep the upper hand, maintain the 'balance' and not overweight one party too much otherwise internal disunion could occur. Like with Visored (if they don't manage their inner Hollow from breaking free it would be catastrophic not just for the bearer).
