Black Friday Beatdown: How to Deal With Lines
One of the biggest annoyances of Black Friday is lining up on Thanksgiving and waiting for the doors to open. All lines aren’t created equal though. Below you’ll find when you should line up at certain Black Friday stores and what to expect at the checkout line.
Pro-Tip: Most big retailers ticket the Black Friday doorbusters like TVs, Laptops and other popular big ticket items. This means if you’re one of the first people in line, you won’t have to sprint to a location as soon as you get into the store. Employees will usually hand out tickets corresponding to the remaining quantity of the specific items to those first in line, if you’re one of the lucky ones that are first and get a ticket, you are guaranteed that item (as long as you pick up the item before your ticket expires.) You can shop for other items and pick up your desired item later.
Best Buy: This retailer seems to have the craziest Black Friday line. First of all, Best Buy usually will have the best “brand name” TV deal (This year it’s a Sharp 50″ 4K TV w/ built-in Roku for $179.99). Deals so good that people CAMP OUT for them. For the last 10 years, I’ve seen people set up tents outside of Best Buy the Sunday before Thanksgiving, spending four days camping out and holding their place in line. If you can handle the cold, and set up a camp out system, the deals can be yours.
Much like other retailers, a couple hours before opening, a Best Buy employee will pass out tickets for the big ticket Black Friday items. For the very BEST Black Friday deals, you probably need to be within the first 20-30 people in line as the deals are in VERY limited quantities. Most Best Buys open at 5 PM this Thanksgiving.
You will need to flow in one direction once you get in. If you have a ticketed item, Best Buy employees will tell you were to find them, but for the most part the herd will be directed around in one direction around the store. Best Buy checkout lines can be pretty busy, expect to spend an hour or maybe a little more while waiting to purchase your items.
Target: (or Tarjay if you’re a hipster) doesn’t usually have a camp out line until Thanksgiving. Most Targets open its doors at 6 PM on Thanksgiving. Unlike Best Buy, you won’t have to be there four days earlier to be first in line, but you will probably have to get up early Thanksgiving morning. Most Black Friday Target lines will start around 6-7 AM and around noon is probably when you will see another good chunk arrive. Personally, I’ve been able to snag a spot near the front of the line by arriving around 10-11 AM. If you are one of the first 80-100 people you have a pretty good shot at getting a doorbuster. To be safe, I would try to be one of the first 30 people if it’s a hot ticket item you REALLY want.
Once the doors open, Target flows traffic mostly in one direction. You can splinter off a little bit, but with all the shopping carts, be careful not to get trapped. Most items will be near the departments (ticketed items will be closer to a marked off area, usually on an emptier grocery side.) Be sure to grab a map. Checkout lines are not as bad as other retailers, usually less than an hour from when you line up.
Kohls: Expect great things and expect not to have to spend too much time waiting to get into Kohls on Thanksgiving. One of my favorite experiences was getting to Kohls only a couple hours before it opened (5 PM this Thanksgiving, an hour earlier than Target/Walmart) and being one of the first 30 customers in line. You can do an early Thanksgiving dinner or late lunch, and head over to Kohls to get some Black Friday shopping done.
The Kohls doorbusters are even more limited than some of the other big retailers, and once inside it is a free-for-all as opposed to one direction like Target or Best Buy. You will need to “speed walk” (the employees frown upon running) to the items you want and grab them like zombies to human flesh. It’s really hard to get all the big ticket items at Kohls (as Kohls does not ticket many items) so prioritize the items your really want. Kohls seem to have fewer registers than some of the other big retailers so be sure to set aside more than an hour (or 2!) to wait for checkout.
Walmart: Wally World is open all day Thanksgiving, even though most Walmarts won’t start their Black Friday Sales until 6PM Thanksgiving night. But you can wander the store before then and don’t have to wait out in the cold, a major plus. Many big ticket items will be spread across the store, be sure to grab a map to know the layout. It IS possible to get multiple tickets. If you’re in store a couple hours before the sale, you can get in line for the doorbuster you are looking for and grab a ticket, then make your way to another Black Friday doorbuster and grab another ticket. Once you have all the tickets you want, you can then find items that are not ticketed and wait in the area. At 6 PM, an employee will open the package and then it is a free-for-all to grab your items.
Walmarts tend to have plenty of registers, but also a lot more people. Walmart will even man each self-checkout station as If you’re lucky, your checkout time could be as quick as 30 minutes but it could be closer to an hour in most cases.
Disclaimer: I do not have insider info. I’ve just been Black Friday shopping for over a decade. I’ve personally have done most of the stores that I write about and am relaying what I know from personal experience. These are just general tips to help you with your Black Friday shopping, and does not guarantee that you will get your desired items. Happy Shopping!
