The Sims team has released a recap of Tuesday’s Inside Maxis live stream.

Hot Topics When will the ‘Simulation/Autonomy Lag’ be fixed?

We’re on it! Particularly, what we’re doing right now is identifying what the root cause of this issue is. That means, we’re investigating what specific actions during gameplay do lead to the lag? This is the first step we need to take because the simulation/autonomy lag is not the actual issue, it’s rather a symptom that can have dozens of different causes. If the lag has happened in your game, you’ve probably experienced the following most common manifestations of this symptom:

Sims standing around doing nothing

Sims not doing anything on their own (with free will set to max)

Sims take forever to do a given command

Time jumping backwards after fast forwarding to Ultra Speed. The Sims will usually freeze while fast forwarded.

Sims come home late from school

FPS Drops

Once we identify what specific actions and circumstances lead to the lag, we’ll know what we need to work on. And the best way to find out, is by analysing your save files! The more save files we can analyse the higher the chance we’ll be able to find the cause soon. That said, please continue your awesome support and keep sending us your save files whenever you experience the lag!

How to share your save files

Please provide the following information when sending your save files. You can send your info through this form or DM SimGuruNick directly on AHQ.

Basic Information about your computer (CPU, Operating System, Amount of RAM, Graphics Card, Hard Drive Space). This is not to blame your computer for the issue but to see what kinds of systems this issue is occurring on)

How big is your save game ?

Does the issue also occur on a new save for testing purposes

Video of the issue happening. Just upload to youtube and post the link in this thread. You don’t need to list it

Things you can try in the meantime

Empty out your Sims inventories (all households you have ever played)

Reduce the amount of objects in your house

Play in a smaller house with less art pieces and stuff lying around

If you over-clocked your computer, check how it goes if you revert that.

Once the freezing occurs, try saving your game (save as), go to your options and back or press M or to go to the world map and back

Lower Graphics settings

If you play with higher resolution than 1920×1080, try lowing to 1920×1080

Go to the Audio settings and remove the check next to Enable Mood Sting

Make sure you fulfill the minimum requirements of the game

Reduce the amount of mods and cc you use

Start a new game (completely shut down the game, then restart it and start a new save game)

Move your Sims to a new game

What personality traits were updated in the last patch?

Bookworm

Bookworm Sims will prefer to choose reading activities autonomously over other Fun actions.

NPC Bookworm Sims will be seen carrying books where possible.

Cheerful

When a Cheerful Sim socializes with a non-Cheerful / non-happy Sim, that Sim has the chance to get a Tense ‘Cheered to Death’ buff.

Cheerful Sims will autonomously try and perk up Gloomy Sims

Negative emotional buffs will decay faster than usual when Cheerful Sims are in a Happy mood.

Cheerful Sims have a greater chance of success with Friendly socials when in a Happy mood.

Clumsy

Clumsy Sims have a chance of failure when engaging in sporting activities like Using a Treadmill, Ice Skating, Snowboarding or Skiing.

Clumsy Sims have a chance of stumbling when walking around – this will elicit a response from nearby Sims.

Clumsy Sims with higher Handiness have a lesser chance of breaking objects.

Clumsy Sims have a small additional chance of breaking certain electronic devices like the Computer, Research Machine, Juice Fizzer, Cupcake Machine, Games Console, Arcade Machine and Popcorn Maker.

Genius

Genius Sims have a chance of a ‘Eureka Moment’ while showering or bathing that gives a small amount of skill for a random skill they already have,

Genius Sims get a new interaction ‘Solve Hard Problems’ that helps them build Logic skill.

Genius Sims get a new idle where they appear to be pondering / solving problems.

Genius Sims will prefer ‘cerebral’ activities like Chess over other more trivial Fun actions.

Gloomy

Gloomy Sims will choose to autonomously Mourn, or act in a gloomy way (like sighing to themselves) more often.

Gloomy Sims will get an Inspired ‘Spectral Influence’ buff when in proximity to Ghosts.

Gloomy Sims get Sad moods prolonged if they see Cheerful Sims doing cheerful things, and also react in disgust.

Gloomy Sims have an increased chance of waking up in a Sad mood.

Glutton

Glutton Sims will autonomously choose to grab snacks more often.

Good

Good Sims get a new interaction ‘Help Out’ that reduces negative mood duration on another Sim in a negative mood.

Good Sims have a lower chance of choosing to do Mean or Mischief actions autonomously.

Good Sims will autonomously choose to react negatively to seeing Mean actions being performed.

Good Sims are more likely to choose to do Friendly actions autonomously.

Goofball

Goofball Sims are more likely to autonomously choose Mischief or prank activities like Prank Toilet.

Asking a Hates Children Sim to ‘Try For Baby’ has no chance of success unless the Sim is Dazed.

Hates Children Sims will get Tense, then Angry around child Sims, and also move away when they get to the Angry stage,

Hates Children Sims will look annoyed when idling in the Tense or Angry buff stages.

Hates Children Sims get a Happy ‘Quiet Environment Child-free Zone’ buff if away from children for a time.

Hot Headed

Hot Headed Sims who get pranked have a greater chance of getting Angry.

Having other Sims Enthuse about things can make Hot Headed Sims Angry.

Hot Headed Sims get Angry if they lose career performance

Hot Headed Sims won’t be targeted by other Sims as for Mischief actions.

Perfectionist Sims who create any Masterwork have a high chance of gaining a Focused ‘In The Zone’ buff which has a chance to increase the quality of another crafting interaction.

If they do achieve a better quality during this buff, they gain an Inspired ‘Focused Payoff’ buff.

What’s coming

We’re including the updated retro style Large Afro and a new Short Afro into the next patch update. Both hairs will be available for adults, children and toddlers.

We’ll also add six new hair colors in a future patch. In our Inside Maxis livestream on 4/27 we stated the colors will be updated in the next patch. However, the update will not happen in the upcoming but in a future patch instead. We apologize for any confusion.

Last but not least, there will be new Asian eye presets that specifically are intended to bring in more options for east Asian representation. We’ve received some feedback from you about adding more diverse body features in CAS and this is part of our ongoing effort to continue updating the game to bring in more diverse content that allows users to re-create their authentic selves in game. We appreciate your ongoing and passionate engagement to support us in making this game the best it can be!

Our approach

We put a lot of effort into delivering the most authentic design to make sure we create hair and body features that are truthful to representation. We did loads of research and took inspiration from real world examples. But we also talked to a variety of people such as our ERGs (Employee Resource Group) and most importantly, to the Game Changers that consulted us on skintones.

Why is the hair red?

During the development process, we use a lighter color – red or orange – because it’s easier to better see highlights and shadows when designing the hair. Working with darker colors off the bat can be more difficult because noticing the contrast can be tricky. Once we have the hair completed, we translate it into the different colors and adjust the levels from there.

2019 was a good year for games.

Lots of interesting new ideas in the space, and some refinements of old ones. Here’s a list of my personal favorite games of this year, in no particular order. Making an ordered list can be fun, but it’s ultimately pretty pointless.

Video games are such a diverse medium at this point that it’s really like comparing apples and oranges. How does Baba Is You stack up against Dragon Quest XI S? They have almost nothing in common, and their aims are so different that it makes no sense to compare them directly.

Speaking of….

Baba Is You

There are a lot of indie puzzle games out there. Making a little mind-bending puzzle is something that’s easy to do on a relatively small budget. There are also a lot of games that mimic old pixel art aesthetics of earlier game systems, to greater and lesser success. Making a truly great puzzle game, though, is a true accomplishment. Something that combines a wildly different array of elements in interesting ways, but maintains a simple readability that allows you to return to puzzles after months away and instantly recognize what’s going on.

Baba Is You is a game that accomplishes this and more. It operates on very simple, basic rules, but the way they escalate over time and require you to think outside more and more boxes with every single puzzle is simple astounding. A lot of puzzle games escalate their difficulty so quickly that it’s easy to get discouraged, put off by the impossible tasks you’re being asked to perform. Where Baba shines is that it gives you a perfect runway, teaching you things slowly but surely through a series of challenges.

This is a game where you will instantly go from feeling like the world’s greatest super-genius to a complete and utter fool in a matter of moments, from finishing one stage to starting the next. Over and over again, for dozens and dozens of levels. No game has ever better demonstrated the value of brain rest, stepping away from a problem and letting your subconscious work on it for a while. Every time I came back to a puzzle after a couple hours, I would suddenly see some option I never saw before.

One final note, the graphics are actually a perfect fit for this game. A lot of times, pixel art feels like a gimmick, something to do when you don’t have a good idea, or just mindless nostalgia-baiting. But here, it serves a gameplay purpose, giving you an absolutely clean view of the elements in play at a glance, and also serves as an homage to the simple-yet-challenging puzzle games of those older eras.

Code Vein

And now, for something completely different: An extremely anime-styled souls-like. I remember hearing about this game years and years ago, and thinking that it looked kinda… bad. But, in the meantime they really brought it all together into something fun, if not very innovative.

Code Vein is exactly the sort of thing I look for in a souls-like: it takes the basic formula and adds some new mechanics to it, and has an identity of its own. Instead of a medieval fantasy world, it’s a post-apocalyptic modern city crawling with vampires and zombies. It takes inspiration from stylish, gothic anime of the past couple decades: Code Geass, Blood+, Tokyo Ghoul, etc. The character creator is extremely detailed, but mostly when it comes to clothes and accessories.

The gameplay is… fine. It’s balanced around always having an AI companion, so they can throw bigger groups of enemies at you. It doesn’t require the same sort of intense caution of the Souls series, but that makes it more of a fun, casual experience. At least until you’re fighting a boss, then it suddenly requires you to really be on your game with dodging. If I have one complaint, it’s that the difficulty is incredibly bumpy, some areas are a cake walk and others have you struggling through every encounter.

Oh, also the area aping Anor Londo from Dark Souls. Not because it’s derivative, that’s totally fine, but because it’s a maze where everything looks the same and it’s a real pain to get through. Souls games are at their best when areas have good landmarks and make a kind of logical sense. Earlier in the game you pass through a big parking garage, and it’s perfect, just the sort of thing that translates well to this kind of game. But this cathedral-ish area… it just sucks.

It really is quite shameless.

Overally, it’s just a solid souls-like. I enjoyed the crunchy RPG elements, switching classes and balancing your weapons and armor to get good mobility and damage. The ability to just equip cool-looking attack moves as skills you can use, like spells in Souls games, is something I’d really like to see in more games in this sub-genre.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

I was kind of skeptical about this game before it came out. Mostly because it was bringing back weapon durability, a mechanic I’ve always hated in these games, but that ended up being a non-issue. Also the school setting made me a bit wary, thinking it was just gonna end up being some Persona-esque thing where you spend tons of time on mundane nonsense while an actual war is going on.

That was all baseless, it turns out. They balance the idea of a military academy with a traditional Fire Emblem structure remarkably well, giving you a lot of freedom around what you want to do when you play the game. You can run around the monastery talking to students, managing your relationships, or you can just do a ton of tactical battles if you want.

The storytelling was remarkably good, though I feel like it was harmed a bit by the weird way it handled multiple routes with different big mysteries. Some routes ended up completely ignoring or just not getting around to some pretty major mysteries. I’m a person who likes long games, but expecting someone to go through all four routes to figure out what’s going on is a bit much.

But more than that, the way it holds back certain reveals hurts the writing in other ways. The actual revelations can’t really have any effect on the characters and their relationships because it all happens at the very end of the game. It keeps the world feeling a bit flat, without any reactions. The mysteries feel extraneous to the plot, in a weird way, when they are so important to certain characters’ identities and the core conflicts that drive the second half of the game.

The gameplay is okay, though a few of the maps are way too big. The portable Fire Emblem games reigned in the map sizes from the old NES and SNES ones, which was a great thing. But now we’re back to moving a whole army one unit at a time for multiple turns just to get to the next group of enemies. The class system was fun to engage with, balancing learning different skills to open up new opportunities, but the gender-limited classes were a real disappointment. Why can’t men ride pegasi? Why can’t women punch good? It’s bizarre, and honestly felt like it had some stuff left over from early drafts, like the pointless dark mage classes.

This has been a lot of complaining about a game I played for close to a hundred hours. Why is this game even on my list? Because the characters are fucking fantastic, and on a basic level the tactical battles are a lot of fun. It offers a paternalistic form of power fantasy, fostering and guiding your children-warriors and then seeing them destroy your enemies. It is just incredibly satisfying to play. And for all that the mysteries end up a bit frustrating, they are intriguing, and do a good job of motivating you to get through a very lengthy game.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Ah, love a good IGAvania.

This was a year where I really reached for comfort food games a lot, and this is maybe the king of that category. It’s just an old style of game that doesn’t get made anymore, done extremely well by the guy who used to make ’em all the time. Nothing super different or innovative, just the same old thing with a couple new tweaks.

It’s an easy game, but that’s entirely by design. It’s about running around this castle killin’ monsters, collecting new abilities, just exploring and poking around the corners. It’s a game that is, ultimately, designed to be comfortable. And in a time of such strife in the world around us, what could be better?

Disco Elysium

There’s already been a lot written about this game, tons of praise heaped on its writing and its interesting, hauntological world that is so similar to our own, and yet so different. Frankly, I’m really glad I got turned into this before it even came out, if I heard all that overblown praise I’d never have ended up actually sitting down and playing it.

Here’s what I’ll say: This game is a look at an ugly world, and it gives you a lot to think about, but it actually doesn’t take itself too seriously. There are a ton of extremely funny moments, a lot of straight-up goofy-ass jokes. This is not medicine that you have to suffer through, just take it as it comes and it’s a good time. This is what allows its writing to really land, it’s not lecturing you from on high, it’s engaging on a lower, more personable level.

It’s also not some super serious text that you have to pore over and consider extremely closely at every moment. It’s a game, you can save scum and try to exploit mechanics and look up answers to mysteries. Much like Souls games, people come up with all sorts of weird rules about the “proper” way to play games like this, but in the end your experience is up to you.

One final note: the game does start off with a kind of off-putting ironic tone. Some people try to downplay this, but it’s there. I can only say this: if you give this game a chance, you’ll be rewarded. It is worth getting through a few sarcastic jabs to get to the good stuff later on. It’s not some perfect audio-visual experience that will entrance you from the opening moments to the credits, it’s just a video game.

Dragon Quest XI S

I first played Dragon Quest XI last year on PC, and I enjoyed it a lot! But I didn’t actually finish that version, not really. I put a lot of time into, but ultimately burned out on the grind towards the very end.

The form that games come in is very important to how they are experienced. Dragon Quest games work best as portable games, I truly believe. It also helps that this version on the switch added the ability to speed up regular battles, so you don’t have to sit through some long attack animations over and over. The more important aspect, though, is simply the ability to pick it up and put it down more easily.

Sitting down at my PC, plugging in my controller, and pulling up a game is a subtly labor-intensive thing. It means I’m devoting a lot of attention to a game, and it has to do something to earn that on a moment-to-moment basis. The ability to just push a single button on the switch and get back into means that I’m willing to forgive a lot more down time.

Anyway, the game itself: this is not just a very good Dragon Quest game, it is the ultimate Dragon Quest game. It truly shows the value in iteration over pure innovation, taking all sorts of different mechanics and ideas from past games in the series and bringing them all together in one big package. But it doesn’t feel overstuffed, it’s just doing the same thing these games have always done, just really, really well.

Dragon Quest XI successfully pays tribute to the older games in the series while also telling a new story with entertaining twists and turns, and fun and interesting characters. It’s beautiful, everything runs smoothly, the writing is charming and light. It’s not on the same level as Disco Elysium, but it’s not aiming for that sort of thing. It’s a fairy tale, a fable, a reflection of the world in a different sense.

A lot of game critics missed this game because it’s long. And that is absolutely fair, it’s hard to fit a 100-hour game into a review schedule in this day and age. But it’s an absolute gem, a truly wonderful experience from beginning to end. I’d recommend it to anyone who just wants a game to relax with at the end of the day.

Monolith: Relics of the Past

Like some sort of Christmas miracle, there was an expansion pack released for one of my favorite roguelikes on Christmas day, just last week.

Monolith is the best twin-stick shooter roguelike, I will make no bones about it. Forget your Gungeons and your Bindings of Isaac, this is a classic NES-styled game with an absolutely pitch-perfect aesthetic and sense of humor. It serves both the twin-stick shooting and the roguelike parts of its genre perfectly, giving you a strong basic weapon to rely on, and also a guarantee of something more interesting but random in every run.

Man, there are games that I enjoy more, but I really, truly feel that this is one of the best-crafted games of the past few years. And this expansion only made it better: fixing up the UI and tooltips to make things more clear, rebalancing the weapons so that they are all useful, adding more variety to runs.

I’m not the best at Monolith, it took me quite a while to get a full win, but that doesn’t make it any less fun to play. In my youth, I was really quite good at bullet-hell games, but nowadays those reflexes aren’t there. It’s a game designed for people who can dodge endless bullet curtains, and also, now more than ever, for those who struggle with it.

It’s truly inspiring to see something that takes from the past and the present and fuses it together into something so wonderful. There are other games that really capture the NES aesthetic and sensibility, like Odallus or The Messenger, but this one really gets the spirit of that whole era of games. It is at once light and airy, and also punishingly difficult. It offers tricks and outs, but also remains utterly mysterious and intimidating.

And that’s it. There are more games I enjoyed this year, like the remake of Link’s Awakening, but these are the big ones that stick out in my mind.

There are a lot of big narrative-heavy games I never got around to finishing, or even starting. It just doesn’t really fit with how I play games these days, listening to podcasts and aiming to relax, not engage with something on a deep level.

That’s okay, though. I’ll get around to ’em in the fullness of time.

Freddie interviewed

Freddie Mercury interviewed by Melody Maker in May 1981.

"I'm a very highly strung person," said Freddie Mercury. "I like having fun, and my job is a very good release for me, but it's still my job and I always take it very seriously. And when you are highly strung and you take your work seriously, you're bound to appear difficult to the outside world."

As the pivot of Queen, that most visual and extravagant of bands who stemmed from the celebratory super-pomp of British rock's coming of age ten years ago, Mercury has assumed an enigmatic air. His stage act is a near combination of dandyish preening, strutting and aggressive, in the finest theatrical tradition. But away from the footlights or the recording studio, Mercury seems insecure, shy of people he doesn't know well, avoiding the limelight.

He's the classic example of the actor who springs to life only when projecting a certain dimension of himself from the stage. There's no doubt that this strength makes Queen's act one of the most impressive and electrifying in its field. Alongside Pink Floyd, the Queen success story in the past decade is as interesting to the Financial Times as it is to Melody Maker readers. Planned with a degree of business acumen, timing, strategy, attention to fine detail and total calculation, the Queen operation could be branded as a piece of cold merchandising - if the music were not so excellent and the stage show so spectacularly impressive.

But it's worth remembering that Mercury, with the exceptionally gifted guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor, has solid roots. They met and gigged in the pubs around Shepperton, Middlesex, before being launched in a blaze of determination in 1974 with a swaggering single that was a taste of style that was to become a golden success. The record was "Seven Seas Of Rhye." Since then, Queen's statistical achievements defy the merchants of gloom who have been bemoaning the parlous state of the record industry. They have sold between 50 and 60 million records and are estimated to be the highest-paid company directors in Britain. They manage themselves and have the credentials to do so: before deciding on a music career, all four were on course to respectable professional careers. Mercury gained a diploma in graphic design and retains a close supervision of all aspects of the band's visual output; Deacon won a first class honours degree in electronics and carefully watches Queen's financial affairs; Brian May qualified as a physicist and worked briefly as a maths teacher before finding the pull of the guitar too strong - but still wonders if he made the right decision, so keen on physics does he remain. And Roger Taylor gained a biology degree before helping to launch Queen. Queen's busy schedule places them in the recording studio next month for sessions that will produce a new album. We all had potentially good careers and we weren't prepared to settle for second best if we were going to abandon all the qualifications we had got in other fields. We wanted the best; it wasn't a question of wanting world domination, although I know it probably came across as capitalism.

MM: But lots of bands set out wanting to get to the top and don't make it - what gave you the edge?

FM: You have to have a kind of arrogance and lots of confidence and absolute determination, as well as all the other obvious skills like music. Arrogance is a very good thing to have when you're starting, and that means saying to yourselves that you're going to be the number one group, not the number two. Hope for the best, go for the top. We just had it inside us and - well, we all had a very big ego, as well.

MM: Are you the leader of the band?

FM: No.

MM: The lead singer usually is....

FM: Ah, yes, we used to be, that's a bygone age. Modern-day people in my position called themselves the focal point, dear. Unless your name is Rod Stewart and you have a backing band - no way is this Freddie Mercury and his backing band. When you analyse it, the four of us make the whole thing work. It's 25 per cent, and I'm the one upfront, that's all.

MM: Your friends say you're extremely shy, and you loathe talking about yourself in interviews like this, but on stage you preen like a peacock. Are you two people?

FM: I don't know what it is, but it's true. I wish I could tell you. I just like having fun. It's a very good release, rock music, but you know you say that I am a different person on stage and that same thing could be said of anyone going out to do his job. It's my work, and I'm very serious about it, getting it right - when we began, we approached it the way we did because we were not prepared to be out-of-work musicians, ever. We said either take it on as a serious commodity or don't do it at all.

MM: Did you ever have doubts that the strategy would work?

FM: At one point, two or three years after we began, we nearly disbanded. We felt it wasn't working, there were too many sharks in the business and it was all getting too much for us. But something inside us kept us going and we learned from our experiences, good and bad. Sometimes, things like what happened to us in the business field give you an even greater incentive to stay alive and fight through. We didn't make any money until after the fourth album, "A Night At The Opera." Most of our income was consumed by litigation and things like that. We had to use a lot of money, so-called money that we made, to get out of contracts. But it was the best thing we could do. After that, it was like a new lease of life.

MM: Is there a togetherness in the band? Do you mix socially?

FM: No. After ten years, my dear, it can be really boring.

MM: So is there friction?

FM: No, not really. I think we know now instinctively what each other wants. We go our separate ways. We have four limousines waiting after each show and we just go wherever we want. It's like a job, as I say. Your come together, do a gig....

MM: Yet you can't be in this "job" of Queen for life, can you?

FM: Ah, you want me to put a deadline on it now! I don't know. Five years ago you could have asked me the same question and I couldn't tell you. It could all end tomorrow. I'm not afraid of it. It's a precarious life but I think I like it that way. I like it a little risky. Okay, so I'm quite well off but money in the bank doesn't mean anything to me. I spend it as quickly as it comes. I could be penniless tomorrow, but I wouldn't care that much. I have this survival instinct in me.

MM: Would you go back to begin again, join or form a band, if Queen ended?

FM: I don't know. I don't get up every morning and ask myself what I'll do if Queen decide to end. I'll take it when it comes. I don't think we've reached our peak. I like very much playing in new territories.

MM: Do you practice your elaborate stage act, say by standing in front of a mirror?

FM: No, I've never done that. Maybe I should and then I'd find out what everybody's on about! You can learn a lot by looking at old videos of yourself, but I've never been one to analyse myself too much. Sometimes it's best to leave well alone, dear.

MM: Who criticises your stage act, then, if anyone?

FM: Oh, lots of people. Lots of my friends.

MM: Do you welcome that criticism?

FM: Yes, Yes.

MM: But you're very prickly about criticism...

FM: Oh, I don't think so. In the end I'm my own boss, which in a way is a bad thing because it's different for someone in, say, the ballet world. A choreographer tells him exactly what to do and if you do something wrong the ballet dancer is told that this is exactly what is wanted. I don't have that, simply because there's nobody to do it - it would be a different, more rigid form of discipline. They can say I do this wrongly, but I'm the ultimate judge. Depending on the night, I just do what I want. I don't know how those ballet people do it, the same steps every night. I couldn't perform in that framework.

MM: What do you want people to think of you?

FM: That I'm somebody who sings his songs well and performs them properly. I like people to go away from a Queen show feeling fully entertained, having had a good time. I think Queen songs are pure escapism, like going to see a good film - after that, they can go away and say that was great, and go back to their problems. I don't want to change the world with our music. There are no hidden messages in our songs, except for some of Brian's. I like to write songs for fun, for modern consumption. People can discard them like a used tissue afterwards. You listen to it, like it, discard it, then on to the next. Disposable pop, yes.

MM: So that when Queen are eventually judged, you don't want to be regarded as having contributed tangibly to the fabric of rock'n'roll, like, say, Presley or Hendrix?

FM: Oh, I think I do and I think we will be. For being respectable musicians who wrote good songs, that's about all. I think we've got a certain amount of recognition and respectability now. We can write good songs, that's good enough for me.

MM: As academically qualified men, do you think you are overqualified for the role of rock musicians and that you have all wasted your professional qualifications in other areas?

FM: No no no! Our academic qualifications didn't help us with rock. As far as I was concerned, I was an art school reject who had a diploma in graphics, but how did that qualify me for rock? But what it did, having that background, was help us in the art of survival in the business side. We still learned the hard way, as every group does at some stage, but....

MM: You were better equipped mentally to find a way out of the jungle?

FM: Yes. Bands these days are geared that way. It's a growth process. I can't analyse every band, but take The Police - they're more geared up than we were ten years ago to taking this business, step by step, and finding a way through it. They're not just going into a studio, making a record and hoping. They study the business side of it too, if they're into it properly. Whereas before, it was hit and miss, a bit. Now, if you don't enter the business as well as play music, you get ruled out at stage one. It's vital to do the whole thing properly - talent is not just writing good songs and performing them, it's having a business brain. Because that's a major part of it - to get the music across properly and profit from it, isn't it? Use all the tricks of the trade, dear, and if you believe in yourself, go all the way. MM: So you don't believe in suffering for art and hoping you'll get discovered?

FM: (Laughs) No! Oh God, you can't go around saying: 'What a wonderful musician I am, what a terrific song I wrote last night.' You've got to make quite sure you get discovered. Part of the talent is making sure it reaches people! Don't just be a wonderful musician and an outstanding songwriter. There are lots of those about. Learn to push yourself, be there at the right time, and do learn how to deal with the business right from the start. That's the state of play in rock now. Nor do I say you can plan all this. You've got to somehow have it inbuilt. I'm saying it's part of talent these days to have a business brain. You have to instinctively have an awareness of all the things that will work to make you successful. Good music is just not enough.

MM: Do you feel very powerful on stage and is that one of the reasons for your enjoyment of your success?

FM: Yes I do, and yes it is.

MM: Does all this frighten you? Is the power controlled?

FM: No, I'm not frightened by it. In less sensible hands it could be dodgy. I could cause a riot if I wanted to but I still think that's a minor matter because it's all very tongue-in-cheek, you must realise that, for me, anyway. I like to ridicule myself. I don't take it too seriously. I wouldn't wear these clothes if I was serious. The one thing that keeps me going is that I like to laugh at myself. With English speaking audiences I really joke with them, slag them off and tell them they're a load of idiots, but I don't mean it. If we were a different kind of band, with messages and political themes, then it would be totally different. That's why I can wear sort of ridiculous shorts and things like that, ham it up with semi-Gestapo salutes. It's all kitsch.

MM: What about the theory, held by some, that rock stars in your position should use their power to try to shape the world for the better?

FM: Leave that to the politicians. Certain people can do that kind of thing, but very few. John Lennon was one. Because of his status he could do that kind of preaching and effect people's thoughts. But to do this you have to have a certain amount of intellect and magic together, and the John Lennons are few and far between. People with mere talent, like me, have not got the ability or power.

MM: So have you any responsibility to an audience once they've bought the album or left the theatre?

FM: In what way? My responsibility to the audience is to put on a good show. They make sure they get good, strong entertainment from Queen in whatever form, whether on record or in concert or on television, and that's that.

MM: Do you believe musicians play better when they're hungry? Or now, because you are financially rich, is there a relaxation because you have no money worries? What are the difficulties?

FM: You can play good when you're struggling and I think you can play good when you've made it, as well. It's a different kind of thing. I mean, when I go on stage, whether I'm rich or starving, I want to give my all. I want to go on there and die for the show! If I have a broken leg or a million pounds or am up to my eyes in debt, I just want to perform. Even having a cold has nothing to do with it - get out there and prove, from what's inside you, that the act and the audience is the thing.

MM: You've appointed yourselves your own managers and totally control your destiny, as a kind of Queen corporation - do you enjoy this aspect as much as getting the music together?

FM: Yes.

MM: Should and could most other bands do the same? Should all bands bent on making a big impact work from the start towards managing themselves?

FM: Yes, I think it's in the interests of most musicians to get a grip of their own business affairs. I'm not saying it should be right from the start, necessarily - it might be best to have a manager to begin with and then learn from his mistakes, for example. But the process is right.

MM: Do you ever leave a stage feeling you've done a really bad gig?

FM: Yes, sometimes. We all scream and shout at each other and destroy the dressing room and release our energy. We set ourselves a very high standard and 99 per cent of the audience wouldn't agree with our assessment of a bad gig. In San Francisco I lost my voice and it was awful, my register was limited to virtually a monotone. I still gave it my all but I knew it was a bad performance. They had to reschedule the tour and take three or four shows off the tour. I have nodules on my vocal cords and most tours are now scheduled around my voice.

MM: But your voice sounds very powerful....

FM: I'm losing the range, believe it or not. I've lost the power I began with. But I've become a stronger singer so maybe my framework is diminishing but within that I can sing better than ever. My voice can do amazing things now.

MM: Let's talk about your songwriting. Can you write songs to order: "At two o'clock today I will start work on a song”....?

FM: I have no set rules for writing, but yes, I can write like that, I really can. It's haphazard and it's become a bit of a joke to me, but if I knew we're going into the studio I just get my thinking process going. I can write songs to order, like a job. Some songs come faster that others: "Bohemian Rhapsody" I had to work at like crazy. I just wanted that kind of song. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" took me five or ten minutes. I did that on the guitar, which I can't play for nuts, and in one way it was quite a good thing because I was restricted, knowing only a few chords. It's a good discipline because I simply had to write within a small framework. I couldn't work through too many chords and because of that restriction I wrote a good song, I think.

MM: What's your best song so far?

FM: I don't know, I write 'em, and leave 'em. If you asked me to play some of my older songs on the piano, I couldn't. I forget them, I learnt them for the time. I have to go in a day earlier and try to work out all the chords to my own songs. I forget them very quickly. For example, "Love Of My Life" is adapted on stage for guitar, but it was written on the piano. I've totally forgotten the original and if you asked me to play that now, I couldn't. Sometimes, I have to go back to the music sheet, and I can't read that well either!

MM: Can you read music?

FM: Very little. I don't need it. I leave that to the others. It's not like Mozart, is it?
