One of the weirdest things I love about TMA is how embarrassing it all is. Like, romanticism is fun sometimes, but embarrassment equally so.
If you've ever meaningfully interacted with the supernatural, you know that shit can be awkward. If you've ever had an office job, you know how embarrassing it can be! Pretty much if you've ever experienced any form of life, you know how embarrassing a day of existence is.
And my god Jon's life is embarrassing! He can't stop getting kidnapped, he doesn't have any friends, he can't even get his job done due to infinite supernatural interruptions. That's really embarrassing.
He's an adult who effectively has to relive being a child because he's thrust into a world that no longer makes sense, and that vulnerability is so real!
But Jon's not the only one who's going through embarrassing stuff, oh no! Martin is hopelessly in love with his cruel boss who barely looks at him; Tim and Sasha hooked up only for Sasha to break it off against Tim's wishes; and hell, Melanie literally got laughed off of YouTube and BECAME A MEME.
These people are going through awful, otherworldly terrors, but not once is it ignored that they must still suffer through painstakingly awkward everyday moments too.
I suppose it comes down to realism. Understanding that the supernatural can become just another part of life in an annoying way, and letting the characters be normal fumbling people makes it hit so much closer to home.
I think all this is why The Magnus Archives is popular not only as horror, but as an explanation of human relationships; the everyday realism is so deeply entwined with the otherworldly but both exist in their own right. And this in itself is realistic, as how far away is horror from your daily life, really? And how different is fear to embarrassment?

[ID: five panels from Trigun Maximum. The first shows Rem looking angrt, her teeth gritted as she looks down and says, "I will never make that mistake again." The second panel shows Vash yelling furiously, his face mostly hidden under his jagged speech bubble as he screams, "are you so sure?!" He's also partially obscured by Rem yelling, "Yes I am! Don't belittle what I went through!", leading into the third panel of Rem screaming with a furious expression. The fourth panel is a quiet beat, showing Vash lying in bed, one hand clenched into a fist and grimacing as he looks up at Rem, whose expression is unseen from behind. The fifth panel shows Rem looking frustrated, rubbing the top of her own head as she says, "I never want to go through that again... being so powerless..." End ID.]
Perfect Kind Angel Rem is just SUCH a disservice to manga!Rem. She's frantic and messy and yells at her son in a moment of passion! She's grieving and furious at herself and devoted to her own atonement! I also cannot emphasize enough that "Killing Is Always Wrong" is not a thing that comes up from manga!Rem, like, ever. The spider-and-the-butterfly conversation is really good character stuff, but is 98!anime only. In the manga, Rem never really talks about violence, or Christian theology; the only person she asks Vash not to hurt is himself. The idea of the boys purposefully harming a human straight up never crosses her radar, so she never talks to them about it. I think this is a valuable choice because it means Vash's dedicated pacifism is a decision he's come to through his own experiences and values, not because he's parroting a dead woman's words. Also, I 200% believe that manga!Rem would have killed a bitch had anyone discovered the boys who wasn't as friendly as Conrad. She has this much regret over the torture and death of a child she barely got to know; I don't see this Rem as the kind of woman to just stand back and beg if anybody wanted to cut up her sons.

one of my favorite things about the one piece fandom is that the fandom and world are both so large that theres someone to stan just about every character no matter how minor or how little information we have for them

it's pretty annoying seeing so many of the people crying out to support artists and that ai is unethical (both very true takes) playing palworld and shooting down anyones justifiable criticism. I avoided the whole thing for awhile, thinking the talk of plagiarism was greatly exaggerated twitter beef and seeing a lot of big gaming channels jumping to its defense. Wasnt interested in the premise and was content to let it pass by, happy that the game would put pressure on the pokemon company to actually give game freak time to develop a good game for once. And then I saw this.
Tumblr media
This is outright stolen, like. laughably stolen. There are other designs too, that outright steal or are questionable. but how the fuck can you say you give one shit about artists and then simp for a game that steals what was most certainly an overworked artists design wholesale? If that was the end of it, I'd side eye loud supporters but not comment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Fakemon designed by EtherealHaze)
Yeah. they also pretty blantently stole from a fakemons design. someone already made a post breaking all of everything down it outright steals but i trust ones eyes to see it immediately. I've seen plenty of people cry "but it's always ok to steal from corporations!!" (even if i think that excuse is fucking dogwater when it comes to art) well then, here's your example of them stealing from independent fucking artists!!
Pirate the game if you must but dont claim you care about artists and then turn around and bite our heads off the moment we point out that the game that very clearly plagiarizes artists! Also on the ai thing, even if it hasnt been proven the team used ai for any of the designs, the studio has apparently dabbled in it in the past and the ceo is an ai supporter. so. that sucks also.

people who think that tcw "fixed" the prequels need to actually examine the pt vs tcw for a while because. first of all girl what was there to fix? second of all how is tcw an improvement? what was changed for tcw that wasn't worse than the prequels?
obi wan was made to be a huge flirt who hits on everyone he meets which was not even a little bit supported by the pt and also was given a love interest for no other reason than to fridge her for his manpain (and also, apparently, to make him more “relatable”??? barf). plus the entire rako hardeen arc, in which obi wan is just a fucking horrible person who doesn’t care about his friends, i guess.
padme went from a strong and central character who was brave, powerful, and involved to being shoved to the side in favor of dave filoni's pet character and completely defanged. she’s ignored to the point where "prequel" (read: tcw) fans will say "the pt trio 🥰" and not even include her despite her being a main fucking character
anakin went from being a complex yet compelling character who genuinely loved padme, who was deeply compassionate for the most part, and who also was allowed to show emotions to being an controlling misogynistic asshole who's in mustafar mode at all times and doesn't have any emotions except for rage, lust, smugness, and embarrassment (because these are obviously the only emotions that men are capable of experiencing). i don't think he cries once in the series, which is wildly out of character on its own.
how is any of that “fixing” anything?? and everyone in the sw fandom stans tcw so hard that even if someone’s talking/writing about the events of the actual prequels, the shitty tcw characterization creeps its way in
also obikins don’t interact this post ain’t for you

I don't know if it's just me, but are they gradually dumbing down Rick's character for the sake of keeping the show popular?
I got extreme Peter Griffin vibes from this episode, and I feel like in general he's a lot less sharp and cool gritty and witty and "unconventional" the way that he was the first couple of seasons. He wasn't an easy character to "swallow" in a lot of ways so to speak, and I feel like he's gradually getting dumber, more cloudy around the edges, less sharp and more conventional and shallow with a lot of the things that he says. He feels extremely typical sometimes this season-like more of the character that people would watch because the character doesn't challenge their headspace in any kind of way, and is someone that encourages their complacent drunk dead personality.
The character used to say things that was really unpopular, or at the very least would occasionally say things that would make people uncomfortable (just things like "if you know how you're going to die because of how boring your life is then you're not even alive" and just things that challenged at the boring drunk complacent status quo that most American sitcom characters are), was an extreme breath of fresh air in terms of how sharp he was and how he wasn't afraid to challenge everything even if it was just in a TV show character kind of way, and it's one of the things that stuck out about me about him the most, especially as someone who is mentally ill and feels detached from most of American culture.
I might just be in a bad mood, but I genuinely feel like Rick feels less sharp and "unconventional"and is starting to feel increasingly more dumb, dopey and easy to swallow as a character.
I still love him and I always will, and sometimes I find it endearing, but this episode in particular felt like he was just being a dumb genuine and boring drunk (really just in terms of the scene with Beth, but considering that the episodes are only about 22 minutes, there isn't a lot of elbow room to work with, especially considering most of this episode was summer screen time).
The only reason why I care so much is because of Rick is one of the very few characters I've ever been genuinely connected with, so I'm just worried that Rick as a character is going down to gradual slippery slope of just becoming an American extremely overly dumbed it down product. The show was so gritty and real and raw and a lot of ways for the first three to four seasons and kept that touch up to season 6, but this season just feels like they're gradually going into "American Dad" type feeling territory, and I'm vaguely worried a little bit about my connection to the show. Especially as someone that does not connect to things easily or ever at all really. And partially because everything is so dumbed down and doesn't seem to have any and genuine philosophy behind it except of being another brainless thing for people to consume to pass the time.
#I'm just complaining to myself#because I don't like talking to people on Reddit#lol#rick and morty#if anybody thinks that I'm being melodramatic then I am because there is such thing as being mentally ill because of real life#problems and being deeply in love with characters because for whatever reason that's what makes sense to my brain#I have no friends in this fandom so I can post as obnoxiously as I want anyway lol#Rick is one of the very few things that means enough to me to bring out this passionate side of me#when it comes to consumption#literally not even kidding but my attachment to Rick is so deep#that even just having a certain kind of dopey looked his expression after being confronted in a certain way from being caught drunk can put#me off#for the record I am aware of the fact that my attachment to Rick is unhealthy#and therefore how passionate I am about him is vaguely off-putting or a lot off putting depending on who you are#but I am a self-aware unhealthy person#and I'm also wear the fact that literally nobody has to put up with somebody else's posts if they don't like how intense or mentally ill#they are#fans like me would be better off at this point if the show was canceled#not because I want it to be but because I've become so specifically attached in my extreme labretentious way from other way that Rick was#presented the first six or so seasons that I feel like at this point I've become almost too picky#and obviously it's not about what I think#but I am saying this as someone that is more than content to be fixated on a canceled TV show because of how perfect it already was#like bj#literally the strongest relationship I've ever had with a character#and it's from a canceled TV show of literally 4 years lol

People need to stop recommending me mobster movies if there’s not a guy like heavily devoted to his wife in it. ‘They robbed a bank isn’t that cool’ don’t care. Where’s the man who goes straight home to sob to his wife. Where is he. Where’s the charm and yass of a man who loves his wife. ‘5ths godfather didn’t have that and you hyperfixated on it enough to draw Sonny and Michael’ yeah they were shitty but Sonny Corleone loved his wife even if he cheated. She hated having sex with that man but they were both like holding hands and prancing around with their four kids. Stupid , he loved his wife and told her everything it was in the prequel and the book maybe you should sign off and read something physical for once

Would there be an au in which Kane and eiya's roles are reversed with Kane being the jealous one and eiya is not?
honestly, i dont think so. on the surface it seems like a fun au, but a LOT would have to be changed in order for that to happen, to the point where im not sure if it can be done in a way that doesnt just boil down to "kane has eiya's personality now" or "eiya has kane's personality now." because the thing is that core aspects of their personalities and stories helped pave the way for what happened to happen. while kane IS impulsive and CAN get irritated and angry quickly he just. fundamentally wouldn't go as far as eiya did.
my main thing is that, assuming laxo would still meet kane in the first volume, it would be extremely fucked up of him to have fallen in love with laxo and discover what is/has happened to him, just to team up with his abuser years later just because hes super pissed off at his sister. that would be genuinely disgusting behavior that is so extremely far removed from kane as a character that it makes me a little sick. this is what i mean when i say a lot would have to be changed, because the thing about eiya is that she doesnt know about nex's connection to laxo when they first meet him, she doenst know about his and the council's ulterior motives and genuinely believes that he has their best interest at heart.
the only way this could kind of work is if kane never finds out about nex and laxo in the first volume. but even then, nex would never want to recruit kane and would refuse to assist in doing so.
basically the bottom line is it would require a lot of plot and character butchering that becomes a little too uncomfortable for me imo!
