I don’t really post on tumblr but I adore the idea of native language day and everyone speaking in their native language, so I want to join in!!

I only speak English fluently but I know a lot of Yiddish words so I want to share some of my favorites!

Gay gezunt un kum gezunt — leave in health and come in health (a saying to wish someone luck before they leave for a trip)

Shrek — monster

Fresser — a good eater

Mazel Tov — good job!!

Schvitz — to sweat

Kvell - to talk with pride, beaming

Bubala — sweetheart or darling, literally translates to “little grandma” but ment in an endearing way

maintaining a language is so fucking difficult. it could be your own native language, and if you look away for a moment, it slips away. it’s like tam lin or proteus, you have to grip it so fucking tight as it tries its fucking best to wriggle or fly or slyther out of your hands

trying to find more jewish music is fascinating (and frustrating) wrt language. what im looking for specifically is a broader variety of yiddish music, but it’s rly hard to find. genre-wise, it’s very limited. what i have found instead, rather annoyingly, is a plethora of genres in hebrew. it’s kind of crazy to me that i can find more stuff from post punk to pop in a historically liturgical language than its vernacular companion. the shift from sacred tongue to secular nation-glue has done a disservice to both hebrew and yiddish imo. the former has lost its focus and the latter has been pushed to the fringes, holding on to itself tightly in folk and punk spaces. that does give it a sharpness, as a small and stateless speech, that seems lacking in the soulless identity of national language. but it makes me angry how a language that once narrated millions of lives now seems to have so little to talk about. for many reasons.

ohh are there any good klezmer-ska bands you know of?

i WISH.................................. unfortunately still the kind of ska fan where i just go wow ska.... but dont actually listen to as many artists as i'd like to (ONE of these years i'll make it to the bad time records showcase at FEST. one of these years.) and am mostly the same with klezmer i just think she is lovely :]. mostly just word associating in my brain and going wow that would be neat......

cursory youtube search has shown me one (1) band called klezska that some guy has uploaded a few grainy videos of. not sure my thoughts on them yet (respect the content but i think this hava negila is too slow) but here is a video of "skava negila" for u to form ur own opinions.

downloaded that chrome language learning extension that translates some of the words on every page into a different language and its comically frustrating when you’re trying to do an annoying task and you have to mentally translate from hebrew to read what’s annoying you

The only native Hebrew speakers I've been remotely close with are my former rabbi, who was Israeli, and one of my religious school teachers, who was an elderly Lithuanian immigrant who had his bar mitzvah for the first instead of second time at 83 because the place he grew up in didn't have a synagogue. He was pleasantly surprised that I could read Hebrew lettering even though I didn't speak a word of the actual language because the rest of my class hadn't even been taught that much. I feel like that perhaps illustrates why some people conflate the continued existence of Jewish culture with a Jewish ethnostate, even though I think it's ultimately a bad idea.
