For the writer asks - 17 and 19!

17. talk about your writing and editing process

The short answer is I rarely plan anything at all, at least not any written plans, I write with vibes and then it sits finished for ages because I hate editing.

The long answer is that the process varies between fic, different styles, fandoms, ships, tenses etc all affect the process.

I love the sibling dynamics of the Bridgerton’s and try to include parts of them in most fics, so I always need to write down all of their ages when I start or I quickly lose track. So Bridgerton fics have the most written down planning, but it’s still rarely plot stuff. Just lots of background info.

I don’t think I’ve ever written a story outline. People who plan out their chapters are like aliens to me. If you know ease, my behemoth 135k 5sos fic, know that I planned none of that. I had ideas in my head and messaged with a friend about it, but it was very much go with the flow. The way I write is like there’s a movie playing in my head and I’m just writing out what I see.

Relatedly, I often have no plot at all when I start a story and I just know the characters/setting/au I want to do. Both Ease and Alignment (which use the same world building but Alignment is h50 mcdanno) I knew how it would start but no plot after that. It was while writing ease, and facing writers block, that a friend said “just write what they’re doing in their daily lives” and I think of that a lot. Writing mundane life can often spark ideas when you consider how those specific characters approach ordinary things.

I have quite a few WIP drafts rn that I don’t have plot for, I just write vibes. One example is a kanthony soulmate au where I have the set up but no idea of how to progress things. It will slowly float along.

I sometimes know (approximately) where a story will end, so I do keep that in mind. Ease I always planned to end with Avery’s birth, but then I got to where I did and it just felt like a natural stopping point. To Commandeer a Husband I always planned to finish with the wedding, then added the coronation last minute when I felt it need a touch more. Obligated I always knew would finish at the wedding. This isn’t universal, sometimes I have no clue when of how to end if.

The last key to my writing process is that I don’t consider what I write to be ‘first draft’. I simply write it, then edit it (usually after a bit of time has passed so I have a fresher perspective). It changes, but often not a lot. It’s fanfiction, it’s fun. I hate editing, so I don’t invest time in it. You don’t have to either! A beta makes it much easier, but I don’t have many and they’re still something very new for me. 🔵

19. the most interesting topic you’ve researched for a fic

I couldn’t possibly remember, I’ve been researching and writing for a decade.

I did have lots of fun with my peerages and titles deep dive, which started as research for to commandeer a husband. I found a 40 ish page UK parliamentary report from the debates had in 2010/2011 about altering rules of succession to the British throne, and it was such an interesting read I’ve read it twice!

I’ve researched everything from the origins of the term comphet to the invention of stoves and cooking techniques in 19th century England. Schools!!! I research schools a lot. It’s not relevant to anything in the story the exact school a character goes to, and yet I intensely search for the right one and then read all their policies. I am simply an information girlie.

Idk if it counts as research but I look at real estate a lot and have found houses for most of my characters. HMU if you wanna see anyway.

Recently I wanted to write a silly but specific sibling threat such as “I’ll bury one of each pair of your shoes in the garden” and I basically googled how to threaten you siblings and got given a heap of domestic violence help centres lmao. 🔵

and i say in a way for closed-minded because he is kinddd of selective (okay, he can be REALLY selective, ngl haha) whenever it comes to accepting other people's opinions of things. so i could imagine that it could take him a bit to actually believe that a hero and a villain could be together since... well, they would more likely than not have a conflict of ideology going on there + i could NOT imagine that wanda would agree with a lot of things that barton does if she learned just how terrible of a person he really is (,: and that's honestly completely understandable so i'm not trying to like say she'd be bad for not agreeing with it.

You still find a way to corrupt people from playing certain fc’s you have history with STILL forcing history on certain fc’s. A history ONE player expects you to remember every detail to even if you don’t like the plot. That one player who makes SO MANY people uncomfortable, whether they want to admit it or not, who also just happens to be the main admin. The main admin who doesnt even do a god damn thing on the main, and then will make every excuse as to why not. Sarah, you’ve found so many ways to provoke, gaslight, bully, guilt or force threads, histories, plots on probably every single player here. It’s gross. You deserve every call out youve gotten. But I don’t even 100% blame you. I also blame most of the spineless people you claim to be your “friends”. Here they complain and shit talk behind your back but then turn around and lick the ground you walked on. But probably because you’ve bullied them into it. I love how you post this long ass thing from the main saying how this place isn't for everyone and if youre bothered, blah blah. Just say this place is for you to do whatever tf you want whenever you want, and be done with it. At least be honest. How many times did you ask if you should drop certain chars looking for pity and how many people begged you to stay, Sarah? No one. That's telling. The O’Neill family is, in short, chaos. They party, work, and love hard. They probably don’t know the definition of moderation, but they also probably couldn’t care less.

Liam is the second oldest, with his older sister Dana in her mid-twenties. He has a sister who’s a year younger, two brothers, Sean and Henry, in high school, and a little sister, Maggie, in elementary school.

The siblings are all there for one another no matter what happens. If even they make a mistake. Hell, especially if they make a mistake.

There were times Liam’s thought he might really go to Juvie or get kicked out of school—all for his family. Luckily, his siblings love him just as much, and have helped him get out of those situations.

His parents, on the other hand…Were absent at best.

His father, Hank, has been in and out of their lives since Liam was seven. He only shows up for one thing: Money. If he cares about his kids or wife, he doesn’t show it. The siblings aren’t even sure in they’re all full siblings, given their parents behavior. But none of them make the distinction. More than once, his father has stolen from the family, making their lives even more difficult. Liam prefers the long stretches of time when he goes without seeing his father at all.

His mother, Laura, tried her best at the beginning, she really did. Liam remembers when she would read him bedtime stories and they’d make pillow forts with Dana. She worked hard at a diner during grave yard shifts and did anything she could to care for her kids. He knows she loved him and his siblings and wanted to be a good mom. But, in the end, she hasn’t done much more for his family than his father.

She cycles through crappy boyfriend after crappy boyfriend, occasionally taking Hank back, and then going through bouts of loneliness where she tells her children they ruined her life. She drinks perhaps too much wine than any one should, but it was the fact that Liam knew she was mostly sober when she tore into him or Dana or his younger siblings that hurt him the most.

He and Dana took it upon themselves to raise their siblings, knowing that if they didn’t, no one would.

From elementary school on, Liam’s grifted and scammed and worked his ass off and sometimes just straight up stolen for his family. He’s willing to do whatever it takes for them, and would sooner risk his future and his entire life than have them risk theirs.

He didn’t want to go to college, but Dana insisted he at least apply, and to his shock, he got enough financial aid and a scholarship to afford UCSB.

That didn’t mean college was easy for him. Especially at first. He didn’t know how to navigate the culture or the money or the other students. He didn’t know how to handle not being the smartest kid in every one of his classes. He tried though, intent on showing his siblings they should strive for the same and proving everyone who doubted him wrong. Eventually, it paid off. Though he still thinks he hates most of the student body. Either believing them to be posers or far too sincere for their own good.

More than once, he���s threatened to drop out of school, but Dana never lets him take it further than that: a threat. They both know that the family needs Liam to do well. To show his family they should yearn and dream for more that what they currently have.

He’s cynical with a dark sense of humor that might piss off the right person—or make them good friends. Maybe even a bit of both, depending on the day.

Still working every angle he can think of, Liam’s out to make money to send home to his family, hoping that they’ll be able to fulfill their dreams and have the lives he knows they want.

Bandmates with Ricky and Dahlia. As the band’s bassist, he thinks of it as something that feels his own, where he actually feels at peace and a part of something that matters.

To make his life easier, he lets the other students view him as nothing more than a burnout. Maybe even a loser. Someone who definitely doesn’t draw much attention, and when he does, it’s never good.

Shortly before Junior year started, his mom was arrested for getting involved in a car dealership scheme with her latest boyfriend. Liam doesn't want anyone to know, but he's all too aware half the school probably already does. He thinks of it as just another thing to keep him going, to keep him pushing people out and hiding his true self from everyone else.

He is never going to admit it, but he’s lost. He doesn’t know who he is without taking care of his family, and doesn’t have the slightest idea of who he is meant to become.

Younger sister: The sister who grew up a year younger than Liam. Open to her being a half-sister as their father was in and out of their lives. Definitely utp for personality, history, etc. but interested to plot things out together.

Tutor student: Someone that he tutors in English or creative writing. He might be prickly, but I figure he would actually care enough to do a good job at this because of that money lol. I would love if this was a bit contentious.

Hook-up: Someone he uses/who uses him maybe?? For sure want to plot this out a bit more specifically. 

Painful ex: Someone who he dated in the past, but they broke up for reasons we can plot out. I imagine Liam would be a really difficult person to date, so there could be a number of avenues we could take this.

Party buds: Liam may know that he needs to focus on school and making money, but he can’t resist having a little fun every now and then. Especially when someone’s got a packed bowl and a six pack. Basically, people he can get into shenanigans with.

Poetry/Writing-Reader: Someone who somehow found out about Liam’s poetry and fiction writing. God knows he would never want to share it with anyone but maybe this person managed to get around that. Maybe they’re the one person he can bounce ideas off with, and doesn’t have to hide how much he cares.

because i was bothered by not being able to tell what’s canon/fanon, i finally dug through the dedicated ask.fm of the plague doctor comic writers, phobs and night. here are a few of my favorite facts i’ve found there: 

- oleg majored in economics in college. 

- dragon/vadim does indeed have a phd in history and culture. this fact isn’t supposed to have anything to do with the plot, which is why this was one of the first things that was revealed about him, before even his name

- altan LOVES clubbing and wanted to go to hong kong to club there. he’s chilled about it a little due to getting older and having less time, but still enjoys it 

- the reason sergei and oleg are constantly sharing clothes is supposedly because their dark clothes often get mixed up in the wash ;))))

- if altan wants to provoke vadim, he’ll bring up that gaga’s country album is trash

- oleg isn’t a really a fan of art or art history, but has always been glad to listen to sergei talk about his favorite pieces (and similarly has always been forced to read his favorite books). in return, he likes to tell sergei all about his favorite rock bands even though sergei prefers classical music 

- when someone asked why oleg keeps supporting sergei if sergei keeps pursuing unhealthy things like his obsession with the plague doctor concept, they answered: 

“The tandem of Razumovsky and Volkov is not an interaction of "good and bad" or "healthy and unhealthy." Theirs is the interaction of two people with an extremely specific morality and outlook on life.”

- altan is buryat, but oleg’s nationality/ethnicity is explicitly left unconfirmed and may or may not be explored later in canon

- altan was studying bioengineering at the ITMO university in st. petersburg, but dropped out and finished an undisclosed degree at an undisclosed university (future comic spoilers??). he likes to take home dying plants to revive them and always prefers wearing something around his neck, be it a turtleneck, scarf, or choker.

- altan has a half-sister, yuma (also nicknamed falcon). they share a mother, but he hasn’t met either of their dads (hers died young, and his left his mother around when he was born)

- oleg’s nickname for sergei since childhood has been seriy (which means grey), but he also doesn’t mind people calling him seryozha. his classmates in uni called him seryoga. oleg, however, doesn’t like anyone calling him olezha, because it feels like preschool.
