Rule Of The Fungi
In the far past of our planet, in the Ordovician period, life was already thriving. It was, however, still mostly tied to the oceans. In this time, where the first plants creeped on the land, laying low to the ground with little structure, fungi where already a few steps ahead. Towering up to 8 meters over the tiny pioneer plants was the biggest land organism of its time by far, the giant fungus Prototaxites. They rule over an emtpy, yet peaceful landscape, serene living monoliths, challenged only by the odd arthropod that left the ocean behind for good…

Ordivician cephalopods. The orthocones should probably be updated to be swimming vertically, but on the other hand the display is not tall enough for that.

Taken 2021 16th November, my field trip took me to Stenbrottet i Hällekis. This was an Ordivician fossil site that had orthocones, most likely from 'Orthoceras regulare'. You don't even have to go to this site to find one, just looking at the stone floors of Sweden shows orthocones. #fossils #fossil #extinction #extinct #extinctanimals #extinctanimal #ordivician #prehistory #prehistoric #prehistoriclife #forhistorisk #invertebrate #invertebrates #bläckfiskar #orthocone #ordovicium #orthocones #blötdjur #mollusks #ortoceratiter #mollusk #animalia #mollusca #cephalopod #cephalopods #cephalopoda #orthoceratoidea #orthoceratidae #orthoceras #orthocerasregulare (at Stenbrottet I Hällekis) https://www.instagram.com/caseyunt2/p/CYYAfiPgU4n/?utm_medium=tumblr

How Plants Caused the First Mass Extinction
In the middle of the Cambrian, life on land was about to get a little more crowded. And those newcomers would end up changing the world. The arrival of plants on land would make the world colder, drain much of the oxygen out of the oceans and eventually, it would help cause a massive extinction event.

The leitmotif of ‘The Ordivicians’ was supposed to be made by a tin whistle,
which the orchestra somehow couldn’t find, so substituted a flageolet, which the props department had at hand from another production.
