Marsius Sitohang & Gondang Sabangunan

DIAWALI dengan suara Sulim(Suling/flute) yang mendayu menjeritkan kesedihan dan duka. Suara suling itu persis bagaikan orang yang ‘mangandung’(lamentation), suara suling yang meniru tangisan andung-andung itu sangat kental menebarkan aroma kesedihan, lengkingan panjang dan isak-isak tangis ditransformasikan kedalam suara suling. Taklama, setelah suling itu perlahan berhenti, kemudian disambut oleh suara terisak-isak sarune(Oboe), dan secara bersamaan dengan hasapi(kecapi) dan garantung mereka memainkan lagu Andung-andung parsirangan yaitu salah satu tembang yang ada dalam album ‘Musique Des Batak’ yang direkam pada Juni tahun 1993, pada acara Maison des Cultures du Monde, Perancis. Pemain Suling itu ialah Marsius Sitohang, pimpinan Grup musik Sopo Nauli, Medan. Juni 1993, Lembaga Kesenian USU yang dipimpin etnomusikologi Rizaldi Siagian mengikuti Festival Musik dan Kultur di Perancis. Dalam rombongan Kesenian USU tersebut, turut serta juga beberapa pemain uning-uningan dan Gondang Sabangunan antara lain Marsius Sitohang(Sulim), Osner Gultom(Sarune), Kalabius Simbolon(2nd Sarune), Maningar Sitorus(Taganing/Garantung), Sarikawan Sitohang(Gordang/Hasapi), Janter Sagala(Hasapi). Dalam Rombongan itu juga ikut beberapa pemain Gondang Karo dan Simalungun, dan mereka membawakan beberapa repertoir Gondang dan lagu uning-uningan dalam Festival tersebut.

Sebelumnya juga tahun 1992, di ‘Festival Indonesia in Performance’ di California yg diprakarsai oleh Ford Foundation dan ARCO, Rizaldi Siagian juga tampil di Festival itu bersama para pemain Uning-uningan dan Gondang Sabangunan beserta rombongan Gondang Karo dan Mandailing. Pada festival itu Marsius Sitohang, dan para personil diatas juga beraksi dan kemudian dirilis albumnya dengan tajuk ‘The Batak’. Itulah beberapa dari sekian sepak terjang Marsius Sitohang di dunia internasional dalam mengenalkan musik tradisional Batak-Gondang Sabangunan dan Uning-uningan.

Marsius Sitohang, Ayah dari 6 orang anak kelahiran 1 April 1953, yang juga Dosen praktek etnomusikologi USU ini mengawali Karirnya sewaktu muda dengan bermain di Opera Batak, darah seni dan talentanya turun dari Ayahnya, kebetulan Ayahnya juga pemain dan salah satu pendiri Opera Batak ‘Sinta Nauli’. Seperti ceritanya kepada majalah ‘Nova’, Gondang Sabangunan telah merubah jalan hidup Marsius yang karena desakan ekonomi sempat menjadi tukang becak di Medan. Tapi mungkin Tuhan berkendak lain sehingga talenta dan jiwa seninya membawa ia menggeluti musik tradisional untuk dapat mengebulkan dapurnya. Berikut artikel tentang Marsius dari tabloid NOVA.

Anak-anakku tak dapat bersekolah dengan baik karena kami hanya menetap tak lebih dari seminggu di setiap kota. Kasihan mereka, tak punya sekolah tetap, apalagi teman bermain.

Melihat kondisi anak-anak, aku memutuskan untuk berhenti bermain opera dan menetap di Medan. Aku berencana memperbaiki pendidikan anak-anak yang berantakan dan menyusun kembali kehidupan rumah tanggaku.Apalagi ketika itu Bapak sudah meninggal. Ditambah lagi usaha opera kami tidak berkembang, mungkin karena pengaruh masuknya televisi ke daerah-daerah.

Namun, jika aku berhenti bermain opera, bagaimana aku dapat menghidupi keluargaku? Mulailah aku mencari kerja. Berbekal pendidikan kelas 2 SD, rasanya sulit mencari pekerjaan yang bagus. Membaca dan menulis pun, aku tidak terlalu lancar. Akhirnya, nasib membawaku menjadi penarik becak.

Selama jadi tukang becak, aku hanya mendapat penghasilan yang sangat pas-pasan. Hanya cukup untuk biaya hidup kami sekeluarga sehari-hari. Padahal, aku ingin menyekolahkan anak-anak ke jenjang yang tinggi. Aku tak mau anak-anak sepertiku, tanpa pendidikan yang cukup. Aku berdoa, kiranya Tuhan membuka jalan.

Tuhan mendengar doaku. Suatu hari Pak Rizaldi Siagian mengadakan seminar di Medan. Untuk mengisi acara, ia meminta beberapa orang dari sekumpulan tukang becak untuk membawakan musik tradisional Batak Toba. Ada seorang teman bermarga Marpaung yang memang pandai bermain musik. Ia mengajakku turut serta dan mengumpulkan tukang becak lainnya yang pintar bermain musik.

Kami bermain di depan ketua jurusan, dekan, dan rektor-rektor dari berbagai perguruan tinggi di Sumatera Utara, dengan bayaran yang cukup tinggi. Aku tak menyangka, permainan kali ini membawa perubahan besar dalam hidupku. Keesokan harinya aku mendapat surat panggilan dari Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU).

Dapat Penghasilan Lumayan

Aku memenuhi panggilan itu. Ternyata, aku diminta pihak rektorat menjadi pengajar musik tradisional Batak Toba di Jurusan Etnomusikologi USU. Awalnya aku sempat ragu dan mengaku kepada mereka, tak bisa menulis. Lantas bagaimana harus mengajar? Namun, mereka membesarkan hati seraya menjelaskan, aku hanya bertugas mengajar secara praktik, langsung dengan permainan.

Waktu itu sekitar tahun 1985, pihak rektorat juga mengaku tidak dapat membayar honorku dengan layak, hanya berkisar Rp 6 ribu per bulan. Aku sempat berkeringat dingin mendengar honor sekecil itu. Setelah kupikir lagi, tak apalah. Aku cukup senang musik tradisi diangkat.

Selama satu tahun, aku dibayar dengan honor sekecil itu. Setelah bertahun-tahun, honorku naik sedikit demi sedikit, hingga sekarang mencapai Rp 225 ribu sebulan. Seminggu aku mengajar empat kali, selama 1,5 jam dalam satu kali pertemuan. Walau penghasilan pas-pasan, aku merasa bahagia bisa mengajar. Aku ingin anak-anak muda mau belajar supaya musik tradisional ini tidak hilang.

Pekerjaan ini pula yang kemudian mengantarku pertama kali ke Ibu Kota, bahkan ke luar negeri. Dalam menunaikan tugas, aku berkesempatan menjelajahi Jepang, Amerika, Belanda, dan Australia. Ketika pertama kali diajak naik pesawat ke Jakarta tahun 1985, aku rasanya ingin menangis saking bahagia. Bayangkan saja, aku yang berasal dari kampung dan berasal dari keluarga tak mampu, bisa merasakan naik pesawat, bahkan sampai luar negeri.

Setelah jadi pengajar, aku mengumpulkan teman-teman yang bisa dan mau untuk kembali membentuk grup musik tradisional. Akhirnya kami membentuk grup musik bernama Sopo Nauli Musik. Grup ini merupakan penggabungan alat musik keyboard, drum, terompet, suling, dan alat-alat musik tradisional lainnya.

Kami menerima panggilan untuk mengiringi upacara adat dan resepsi perkawinan, upacara adat orang meninggal, dan acara-acara gereja. Termasuk mengiringi paduan suara Bonar Gultom yang sangat terkenal di Sumatera Utara. Grup ini menjadi pekerjaan sampingan selain mengajar di USU. Aku berpikir, tak mungkin bisa membiayai anak-anak hanya mengandalkan gaji yang pas-pasan.

Dengan menerima panggilan, aku mendapatkan penghasilan yang lumayan. Dalam sebulan kami rata-rata mendapat panggilan manggung 15 kali. Dalam sekali main, kami mendapat minimal Rp 100 ribu per orang. Setelah aku hitung-hitung, dalam sebulan aku bisa mendapat penghasilan sekitar Rp 1.500.000. Mungkin penghasilan segitu tak bisa membuatku kaya. Tapi paling tidak, aku bisa membesarkan dan menyekolahkan anak-anak, bahkan ada yang sampai ke tingkat sarjana.

Diajak Rekaman

Semakin lama, grup kami semakin besar dan terkenal. Beberapa kali kami diundang untuk berkolaborasi dengan penyanyi terkenal, bahkan dengan musisi asing. Selain itu, kami juga diajak rekaman. Hingga kini, kami sudah memiliki 20 album rekaman. Lima di antaranya dilakukan di Jakarta.

Sayang, aku tidak tahu menahu sama sekali masalah pembayaran yang seharusnya kami terima. Saat itu kami hanya dibayar sekali saja, ketika selesai rekaman. Bahkan hasil kasetnya pun tidak kami dapatkan, melainkan harus membeli sendiri. Belakangan kami baru tahu, kami seharusnya mendapatkan royalti dari setiap kaset yang terjual.

Di luar itu, aku cukup bangga kasetku beredar di pasaran. Apalagi namaku sempat ditulis di media saat berangkat ke luar negeri. Akibatnya, orang kampung menganggapku kaya. Padahal, penghasilanku hanya cukup untuk biaya sehari-hari dan menyekolahkan anak. Terkadang aku jadi malas pulang kampung. Aku merasa belum mampu memberikan apa-apa kepada saudara-saudara di kampung. Kalaupun pulang kampung untuk bertemu Ibu, aku usahakan di malam hari, biar tidak dilihat orang.

Pahit dan enaknya, semua sudah kurasakan selama menjadi seniman. Yang pasti, aku merasa bangga sekali, karena berkat musik tradisional ini, aku sudah bisa kemana-mana. Suatu saat nanti, anak-anak akan memberitakan kisah dan pengalamanku kepada cucu-cucu, lengkap dengan foto-foto dan piagam-piagam yang pernah kuterima. Dua anakku kini mengikuti jejakku menjadi pemain musik tradisional. Kepada mereka aku berpesan, “Boleh main musik, tapi harus belajar agar lebih maju lagi.” Aku memang selalu memberi nasihat kepada anak-anak, jangan sampai mereka seperti aku yang tidak sekolah.

Tak terasa, sudah 20 tahun aku mengajar musik. Melihat anak didikku, aku sedih karena belum menemukan generasi baru yang bisa menggantikan generasi sebelumnya. Aku bisa merasakan, ada yang hatinya mau belajar, namun tangannya tak mau bergerak. Ada pula yang pikirannya mau, tapi cara bermain tidak bisa. Ada yang bisa bermain, namun hati dan pikirannya tidak berminat.

Rata-rata mahasiswa di kampus itu belajar hanya untuk kepentingan penelitian, tidak ada yang benar-benar ingin memperdalam tradisi ini. Sudah aku perhatikan selama ini, belum ada yang sesuai dengan harapanku. Itu sebabnya, kepada anak-anakku yang suka musik kutekankan, belajar musik tidak pernah ada tamatnya. Tambah pengalaman, tambah pengetahuan, terus belajar terus.
