Thalia rounded a corner in the library and found her cousin Theresa studying at a long table. They didn’t speak much — Theresa was six years older, in a different Circle section. “Pssst.” 

“Thalia! What is it?”

“Do you know where I can find A Compiled History of the Occupied North?” 

“What would you want with that?” Theresa squinted.

Thalia grinned sheepishly. “I heard Par Vollen had pyramids before the Qunari landed. Renatus of Ayesleigh is the only scholar—” 

Theresa held up the tome from her stack. 

“Brilliant!” Thalia skipped over, kissed her cousin’s cheek. “I’ll return it soon, I swear.”

... has anyone considered a Mage!Sebastian AU

instead of being exiled from Starkhaven for drunken shenanigans and sleeping around, Sebastian gets sent away much earlier because he unexpectedly manifests magic (maybe he sets one of his brothers on fire a little).

i think he resents his magic for a long time, maybe even thinking his parents were relieved he turned out to be a mage so they could wash their hands of an inconvenient third son early. of course, his parents also hate the fact that he’s a mage, if only because it brings shame to their family and makes arranging marriages with their other two sons much harder, since everyone now fears that magic will pop up in their heirs, too.

as a noble, he’d probably get sent to one of the “nicer” circles, list Ostwick or Montsimmard (i personally like Montsimmard so Vivienne can be his mentor uwu). so he grows up kind of sheltered, not experiencing the worst the circle has to offer, though he’s aware that abuses happen. i can almost see him being like a pre-grey warden anders, sneaking out for his own amusement until the templars drag him back, with the added bonus that because he’s got royal blood they’re not gonna risk executing him or making him tranquil.

maybe the thrill of his repeated escape attempts wears off, or he gets properly chastised by his mentor, and he realizes he has an opportunity to be an example: a “good” mage, someone to prove to the common people of Thedas that they don’t all fall to demons and blood magic.

then for whatever reason he gets transferred to Kirkwall’s Gallows. maybe to help mentor the mages there, i don’t know. there, he finds his status means much less to Meredith and her templars, and he sees the horrors his fellow mages face much more openly. 

my trail of thought is drifting off, but i imagine he still meets (mage) Hawke & Co. (though i’m not sure how he’d be allowed to travel with them). Hawke is the first apostate he’s had extended contact with, and he’s fascinated by her; she’s definitely dangerous, but he can’t bring himself to be afraid of her. he’s also curious about Merrill, having never met a Dalish mage; he probably asks her all sorts of questions about magic in their culture. and I think with Anders he’s definitely friendlier, but the relationship fractures as time goes on because he finds Anders’ methods to be too extreme, whereas Anders thinks he’s too complacent.

Chapter 3: The Valiant Knight of the Free Marches

Chapter Summary: A lone, former templar recalls his time at the Circle Tower then witnesses something that’ll forever change his life.

How long has it been since he last saw Ostwick?

How long has it been since he last saw his family?

How long has it been since he actually slept?

How long has it been since he had an actual meal?

He can’t remember clearly at the moment, his stomach growling, distracting from his train of thoughts. He gave out a weary sigh, wishing he would be caught up in his siblings' shenanigans again than to be stuck in the Hinterlands.

Declan has been wandering the vast forest of the Hinterlands with no way of knowing where exactly he is. A tired groan escaped his lips once more, he hadn’t been sleeping well nor had he been eating well. The cold, wet ground itself wasn’t the problem, it was what lurked in it that kept Declan up most nights and, of course, the wolves and bears that kept finding their way into his camp. And the food was hard to find as well, he hadn’t spotted a single ram nor deer and the only creatures that seemed to be around and edible were Fennecs and rabbits. He rubbed his temples, his head pounding from the lack of sleep, how long must he keep going on like this?

He had to keep his mind off from his current pain somehow.

Case Study: Feynriel - Regarding Elf-blooded & Elven traits

While roaming within the streets of Kirkwall as Hawke & Co. encounter more shenanigans they didn't ask for. Or maybe they did. Something has, in particular, has piqued my interest.

Or perhaps should I say someone.

Feynriel - an elf-blooded apostate, who Hawke would later be informed by Keeper Marethari during [Night Terror] that he is a "Somniari," or "Dreamer," an exceptional skill that makes him able to enter and change the Fade at will, even killing people within it. A rare talent, if developed at all, that was thought was thought to have been extinct for two ages ( as far as Southern Thedas is concerned), since dreamers attract demons and most prove too frail of mind to survive a demonic possession.

What is quint about this young man wasn't the fact that he turns out to be a Dreamer; while his body physique is unmistakably human. If we take a closer at his facial features and compare to his parents, he much resembles his elven mother Arianni

than his human father Vincento

Such as the spacing between the eyes and its shape, and the tip of his ears appears to be a little sharper (although one might argue it is due to the angle of the picture) 

Which is a rather peculiar phenomenon considering that elf-blooded (often refer to offspring sired by a human and elven parent) would appear physically human and are in fact considered purely human. The reason why we don’t usually encounter individuals that have elvhen traits unless they are full elven was that the elven genome has been described as "adaptive" and elven reproduction in this regard has "much more to do with magic" than science or simple breeding.

Even his wiki page has sited that the developers have more or less acknowledged his more elven features, although Weekes has dismissed it as a “mistake” in Feynriel’s model.

What I propose is the notion that it is more to do with the environment. Let me explain:

Elves generally don’t mingle with other races much already due both cultural and practical reasons (as offsprings between human & elf is a [elf-blooded] human, general social discrimination and hostility).

Regarding Dwarves, they aren’t very fertile race to begin with due to the fact that darkspawn has taken over and tainted majority of the Deep Roads, not to mention the notion of mating with other races (humans & elves) was in fact so rare it is considered an oddity than a group of its own; In addition, Orzammar is very restrictive on who they allow into their territory, thus being contact with one, let alone forming an intimate relationship (or at all) is very rare. A “half-dwarf” would mainly be a result of a union between a surface dwarf and human.

As we learn throughout the lore, the very essence of elves are deeply connected to the Fade. In fact, it is heavily implied that elves were once spirits themselves but later take on flesh, mortal form.

And the existent of the Veil has muffled (not mute) that connection.

Typically, cities and settlements avoid locations where the Veil is thin for practical reasons such as spirit and demons unless the place is of political and/or religious significance. Not unlike the people in real life have superstitions and/or avoid such places that are said to be haunted or supernatural essence in general. Normal civilians usually stay away from regions and buildings that harbours the Circle of Magi as well. Even where were signs of any civilization in such place where Veil is thin are usually of the wilder folks such as the Avvars and the Chasind in which they are lived in the region for generations and more intimate information we know about them are often the tip of the iceberg. Majority of Dalish clans generally refrain from human contacts. 

Now, Kirkwall is where things get interesting. 

You see, while most people might have just assumed that it is only the Gallows where weird [magic] shit happens (“expected” in most Circles ).

If one did take the time to search, gather and read all 12 parts of [Codex entry: The Enigma of Kirkwall], one would realize the “City of Chains” and it’s surrounding region (including Sundermount) is one special place of fuck-up.

Literally

The investigation notes conducted by “The Band of Three” has revealed that the underbelly of Kirkwall aka Dark Town is not simply sprawling mess of a labyrinth. The layout plan of the city shows there were patterns in the intersections, back alleys, and boulevards. Some magisters believed in the power of symbols or shapes. In the oldest parts of the city, one can make out the outlines of glyphs in the very streets.

 Later notes shows, the records of slaves entering Kirkwall, the numbers did not add up.  "For every thousand slaves that came to Kirkwall, a hundred disappeared", that's one out of ten slaves. A disproportionately high number and quite alarming.

"The mages of Kirkwall have a more troubled history than those in other Circles. A greater percentage of them do not survive the Harrowing, and a greater percentage turn to blood magic—almost double that of Starkhaven or Ostwick." (Why the Chantry decided it was actually a good idea to set up a Circle here in the first place boggles the mind. But that’s topic is for another time)

"It is well known that the Veil is thin in Kirkwall, small wonder given the suffering in the city. But we've discovered the magisters were deliberately thinning it even further.” Basically, with the information above, we can come to the conclusion that those ‘missing’ slaves were being sacrificed to whatever blood magic ritual the Ancient Magisters were preparing.

(This is some level of *FMA horror right there; City state-scaled instead of the whole nation. Not that it was any better)

Whether the citizens & inhabitants acknowledge or unaware of the haunting history that their resident used to be the heart of the slave trade in the height of the Ancient Tevinter Imperium, we do not know. Perhaps they choose to be ignorant of such history for better sleep at night.

You might be wondering why I brought up all these grim past and what is it has anything to do with being elf-blooded and elven traits.

The point is, Kirkwall is a rare case that contains all the ‘required’ elements - a city with a fair amount of residents - including an Elven Alienage. But also where the Veil is extremely thin, dangerously so. However, it also means the connection to the Fade is stronger as well - strong enough for the ‘recessive’ -like (word loosely used) gene of the elven blood to surface and affect one’s appearance.

Therefore the word “adaptive” is being used because it is affected by the level of connection to the Fade in the region.

 Conclusion: I have come up with 2 theories + 1 potential variable.

Theory I.) “Inborn” - The elven-gene is affected by where the child was conceived and where was the mother during her time of pregnancy. The energy from the Fade is absorbed by the child and nurtured at its most vulnerable stage - the fetus, in the purest form.

Theory II.) “Postnatal” - where the mother was during her pregnancy might be irrelevant. What is more important was the environment the child themselves was in. Just as the local diet and culture practice would affect the physique of a person, so does the energy of the Fade would influence the essence of the said elf-blooded individual, nurturing them as they grow up.

Variable) The parents of the child - the elf-blooded child who has an elven mother has a slightly higher chance of having their [physical] elven traits surface than compare to elf-blooded child who has mother of other races (Humans, Dwarves, Qunari(?)) due to the fact that the child is [usually] more closely connected (emotional & physically nurtured) by the mother as the result of the pregnancy.

Also, rolling in What If feels re: what if Vincent and Rolfe had been raised together?

FOR INSTANCE:

Philip somehow learns about Flora actually being married to a distant relative of his. He’s horrified because she made it seem like she was a friend of the family instead of being, you know, actually married to one of his cousins thrice removed or whatever. THEN he finds out about Rolfe and says Hell yes, I want to be involved in this kid’s life.

Cue him finding out that this baby has been neglected and mistreated and oh hell no, I have lawyers on retainer, I’m getting custody of this tiny bean even though I am a single father with ZERO experience raising kids. Fuck both of you very much for treating MY son horribly.

He meets Marta two years later and she falls in love with both this charming man and his adorable toddler who is pretty much a permanent fixture/office mascot in Philip’s workplace. Vincent comes around when Rolfe is five and he takes being a big brother super seriously. Plus now he has a lookout when he wants to go on cookie jar raids. As a wee sprout, Vincent’s not a GOOD lookout, but it’s nice to have someone watching while he gets snacks. Shenanigans ensue. House Rule #26: no running with sticks while play swordfighting is enacted.

Since he never got placed in the Chantry and never joined up a secret order of Chantry assassins, Rolfe takes to politics, trying to find a way for mages to get better representation after his little brother is placed in the Circle at Ostwick. Stuff happens, the Conclave explodes, Rolfe sets out for Ferelden, promising his parents (Marta is the only mother he’s known and he sees her as such) that he’ll find out what happened to Vincent if it’s the last thing he does.

Something, something WTF, Vincent your hand’s glowing, something, something instant heart eyes at Cassandra and making a fool of himself trying to be cool in front of her as usual. (Because no matter how many AUs I think up, some core things never change.)

Elyse was sent to the Circle at a young age. Keeps in vague touch with some of her siblings, but never forgave her parents for personally alerting the Templars. She considers her softer, less threatening persona during her time in the Circle an elaborate ruse she adopted to simply survive, and has relished the freedom of being an apostate. She wants the Circle system to burn to the ground and doesn’t care who knows it. This does not endear her to Cullen or Vivienne.

Is proud of being a Mage. Makes it a prominent part of her visible persona, including having a Mage throne installed in Skyhold. Spends time with Dorian because she feels she can be the most herself around him. 

Elyse did not initially like Cassandra because of her association with the Chantry, but they bonded after the events of Caer Oswin. Since then, they have developed a bond where they seek each others’ advice over wine and swap smutty literature recommendations. Elyse considers Cassandra one of her best friends. She also sometimes hangs out in the tavern with Varric and Bull. Varric’s nickname for her is “Spiky.” She likes her coffee black and rises early for breakfast so that she can take her meal in peace and quiet. Her favorite mission was the Hissing Wastes because she loved the silence. Genuinely enjoys tavern food when they’re on the road.

Elyse is generally fairly comfortable with leadership and is relieved to be able to openly train as a battlemage, which the Ostwick circle denied her. Has absolutely no aptitude for herbalism or alchemy whatsoever. When she sits in judgment, she tends to prefer harsher judgments overall, though she does show mercy to those who at least meant well.

Looks damn good in the red Inquisition uniforms, and knows it.

Her strategy is to strike first, strike fast, and strike while the iron is hot. She’s impatient and would rather go in leading a small advance team than wait for reinforcements to show up. 

Prefers fire spells. Is known for her calm and brutality in battle. Felt absolutely no fear when facing Corypheus. 

Her relationship with Sera started out as friends with benefits, but grew after Sera trusted her to control her magic. Whenever they fight, she gives Sera time to calm down, and then they can usually talk it out. Hates Sera’s cookies but would never, EVER, tell her. Has therefore eaten at least three dozen of Sera’s awful cookies. They married at Halamshiral and after the Exalted Council, Elyse participates in Jenny shenanigans when she’s not hunting Solas. She’s gonna beat the ever loving shit out of him when she finds him.

My OC as a Child

I was tagged nearly a millennia ago by the lovely @lechatrouge673, who showers my dear Valarie Trevelyan with almost as much love as I do, so I spose I’d best deliver on this! 

1. Who named them/significance of their name

Valarie Ashre Trevelyan is the daughter of a Free Marches Bann, and a Chasind shaman’s daughter, who the Bann of Ostwick fell madly in love with in his youth - the attention was reciprocated, and the two whisked off to Ostwick, where, because of their massive holdings, they are sneered at only quietly behind closed doors. Her name is a wish for both bravery and joy ( Valor and Happiness), and was a concession between the parents for both a socially acceptable first name, and a middle name that hearkened to Lady Trevelyan’s roots. 

2. Home they grew up in 

For the first 8 years of her life, Valarie lived happily at home on her parents estate. A bright, amiable child, she was adored by the staff, and welcomed nearly wherever she went. Shortly after her 8th birthday, however, Valarie’s magic bloomed. Her mother, a shaman’s daughter, was herself a mage and had cleverly concealed her apostasy for many decades. Lady Trevelyan was entirely prepared to fight for her daughter’s freedom, but Val presented herself to the templars of her own accord - easier for her to adapt, she said, than her mother. She spent the next 9 years there, until she received permission to transfer to Fereldan’s circle. She arrived just after the fall of the tower, and was promptly swept up into the warden’s company. She returned there after the final battle, and remained there until the events of Inquisition.

3. Relationship with parents

For the most part, their relationship is good. Valarie and her father have a soft, sweet, easy friendship - they share a love of books and growing things, and both have an easy gentleness, until roused. Her relationship with her mother is complicated. They’re both enormously willful, with spines of steel, though you wouldn’t think it to look at Val. Lady Trevelyan is not gentle - she’s adapted to Ostwick full aware that she’s come from a place of disadvantage, and she’s fashioned that disadvantage into a formidable armor. She’s cool and aloof and intimidating, and her presence fills any room. She and Val have often fought over Val’s decision to turn herself in to the templars. At the same time, Val has frequently sought her mother’s advice nearly her whole life; Lady Trevelyan may not have been able to save her daughter from the Circle, but she exercises her might to ensure that she has some control, and a means of frequent contact. Val learns from the Circle by day, and by softly murmured lessons from her mother by night, via a smuggled message crystal. After the events of Origins, Val reshapes herself with her mother’s strength in mind.

5. Childhood friends

Her father’s sister married an Amell, who fell on hard times. With a much diminished estate, the Amells sought to provide better education and opportunity for their young daughter Serinna. Serinna spent several years on the estate, and she and Val were nigh inseparable. They both adored Val’s older brother, Benjamin, and followed around at his heels. 10 years her senior, he was still a marvelous sport, teaching the girls how to ride and how to swing a wooden sword, and enabling a ridiculous amount of shenanigans.

6. Favorite toy

Val was much less attached to typical toys, preferring instead to read. She has a pendant from her mother, though, that is actually a well concealed message crystal - she would wear it and when off on questionable adventures as a child, could be reached easily. When she was sent to the circle, it was her most treasured possession, a small piece of home, where her mothers voice was still close at hand.

7. Childhood trauma

Val was fairly free of childhood trauma until around her 8th year. She and her cousin Serinna were playing wildly at being chasind apostates, and were both shocked to suddenly find themselves wielding crackling electricity. When Val went to turn herself in, Serinna immediately followed. To their horror, the knight commander from Kinloch was in town, and insisted that the Fereldan girl return with him to her home circle. The parting was abrupt and emotional, and Serinna wasn’t permitted to read or return Val’s desperate letters for several years. Val often woke in the night as a child sobbing for Serinna, after some twisted reliving of that parting. This only made Serinna’s sacrifice many years later at Denerim that much harder to bear.

8. Hobbies

Reading, gardening, trying to solve all the world’s problems/mend all broken hearts, running wildly amok on the estate, wheedling templars into breaking protocol, generally being both a precious cinnamon roll and a complete shit. 

9. Childhood fear

Pre-circle, Val was fearless. After the circle, she was constantly afraid that she would lose people. If a mage or templar that she’d grown attached to wasn’t seen for a few days, she’d be an inconsolable, teary mess until the person in question could be produced, whole and sound.

10. Quirks

She had a habit of dragging her favorite book of stories around with her in a horrible ragged little knapsack, to her father’s dismay. She also went through a period for a whole year where she insisted on dressing just like Benjamin, who was then training as a chevalier’s squire. She plays and smooths and tugs on one particular strand of hair so frequently that it’s jarringly straight in her otherwise curly mass of hair.

TSTS Chapter 17 & 18 - Snippet 1

Soooo my goal is now to try and post on the 19th of Feb to make the one year anniversary since my last update. I still have a while to go, so to do that I need to be working on the text every day. As a little self induced peer pressure incentive, I'll post a snippet of my progress on here every day until the 19th.

"Jonathan," Nadia called out to him in concern, but he wasn't listening. He was busy staring down at his right hand where his palm was bandaged a second time from his journey to Nevarra. The same wound he got from clutching the blade of a dagger in a darkened street as he was returning from Samahl's home. The pain, the fear it had caused. Could he even be sure of that?

Nadia grasped his hands on the desk and his head jerked up to look at her. Jonathan had never seen anything like it coming from his older sister. The arrogance and poise usually falling around her like a satin shawl had evaporated, and the silvery shimmer in her eyes glinted with genuine regret, as if watching something about to break.

"I'm sorry he lied to you."

🍎 RED APPLE — where was your oc born? do they still live in/around their place of birth or do they live somewhere else? how do they feel about their birthplace?

Thalia was born in Ostwick and grew up in the city and the Trevelyans' countryside estate on the coast until she was thirteen years old. Then she was discovered to be a mage, unceremoniously whisked away to the Ostwick Circle, and never saw her home again. After a decade there, she spends Inquisition living in Ferelden, at Haven and Skyhold, and I imagine she moves with Cullen to South Reach to be closer to his family after Trespasser. Ideally I think she'd travel around in the post-Trespasser years, investigating mysteries with Dorian and generally keeping a low-key eye out for shenanigans going on with Solas.

She is pretty ambivalent about her birthplace. Her childhood memories are vague and her standing with her family is poor, so she has no real desire to return to Ostwick or try to reconcile with them. I think she'd go back to the city if there was a compelling reason to, but she'd probably try to avoid her family like the plague.

I've gone back and forth on this one, since every time you enter deep water in Inquisition the game slaps your wrist and returns you to shore, lmao. But I think so, yes! She's plunged fearlessly into too many bodies of water to be worried about drowning. She probably learned as a child with her siblings, and I suppose it makes sense for being able to play in the surf at the family's country estate. She hasn't properly gone swimming in a long time, though. The Ostwick Circle didn't have a pool, and despite being close to the shore as well, they weren't really into letting their charges out for jaunts. :|

My Opinion on;

Character in general:  Ok so Juliet is a fucking blast even though it’s all been crack basically (though honestly, her whole sibling relationship with Logan is crack lbr).  Keyleth idk her canon, but I love her.  She’s adorable and awkward and her interactions with Tal are hilarious.  Dolores is bae.  You do the murder robot princess justice honey, I could never replace your girl.  AND THEN THERE’S LASAIR.  MY GIRL.  LOVE.  SHE’S AWESOME AND I ADORE HER TO BITS AND PIECES.  The boys do too.  That girl has grown so much since we first started writing and I’m loving every second of it. How they play them: LOVE.  YES.  10/10 EVERY ONE OF THEM.The Mun: DARLING I LOVE YOU AND YOU’RE ALSO ONE OF MY BFFS OK.  You’re sweet and understanding and a goddamn enabler and go along with my bullshit shenanigans and put up with me and just goddamn do I love you you wonderful woman.

The Details:

The Herald’s Rest is the Skyhold tavern, located in the fortress hidden among the Frostback Mountains.  Despite the frigid weather, the tavern is kept warm and friendly with a roaring fire and plenty of booze to go around.  While sometimes the patrons get a little rowdy when inebriated (especially as the night goes on), it’s still a favorite place for those calling the stone walls home to come, have a drink, and take a break from their weighty job of saving the world.

The Rules:

Don’t be a dick.  While muses can and will butt heads at times, let’s keep the conflict to IC only.  If there’s an issue talk to admin (me and @flame-of-ostwick).

18+ only please!  If strip poker starts being played, I’d rather not have underage muns or muses around for that.

Alright Folks, might seem an odd milestone to celebrate, but Max seems to be holding steady about about 170 followers. I can't do a giveaway or anything, but I wanted to let people know how much I appreciate them giving me a chance, and sticking around for the fun.

@lemurmure: You know, you actually used to intimidate me. Your writing was gorgeous and Ari was just...I have no words. You were one of the people I initially followed because I enjoyed your writing, never thinking that we would ever interact. However, you have proven to be one of my favorite RP partners, and Max just kind of clicked with Ari to be honest. I love their relationship, because he honestly doesn't have very many friends on here and she happened to be the first to connect to him in such a way. So thank you for letting them get to know each other.

@angeliamaritudinem: You are amazing and I adore you. I wasn't sure how things would go when you sent me that first ask all those months ago, but I am so, so glad that you did. You have proven to be one of the sweetest people I have ever met and I love writing with you. I never expected Gabriel to make the impact he has on Max, but I love them together.
