The more I think about it the more Anaxa's battle voice lines crack me up.
Imagine being faced with a guy serving absolute cunt, rocking an eyepatch proving that he's seen some shit™️, only for this dude to go: "I'm just a frail scholar" and then shoot you in the fucking face.
The audacity of this man.
I'd fucking sue.

Blur my man you gotta stop while you’re ahead. Man’s losing his hip points/aura with the youngins by the second
On the other hand… Grumpy might’ve found a Sonic he can tolerate
-
Guys the fact that these were the actual lyrics in sonic boom crack me up. That show is a fever dream. Also it’s where the RHCP reference comes from lmao, since it’s based on Can’t Stop.
(Socks and Tom 100% listen to rock music together, which is why my poor boy is able to clock Blur immediately.)
To any manga fans, this is the one and only reference of Nicky and his violin 😔.

What I think works so well about Clary and Isabelle's friendship is that they're very similar people, but they present themselves just differently enough to appear alien to each other. Both of them were the only girls in a group of boys (Isabelle was raised more or less isolated with Alec and Jace, while Clary doesn't seem to have any friends other than Simon and to a lesser extent his band), and they responded to this in very different ways. Isabelle basically committed herself to her role of "the girl" and always performs extreme femininity, while Clary attempts to sink into the background as "one of the guys." Both of these behaviors can be seen as rebellions against their culture. Isabelle comes from the very misogynist world of Shadowhunters, where women are respected as warriors but expected to act in a masculine way in order to earn that respect. She rejects this, and proves her place as a brilliant fighter while maintaining her fun and glossy feminine traits (compare her with Jessamine Lovelace, who was seen as silly and frivolous for her feminine interests). Clary on the other hand is a child of the nineties growing up in NYC. As a teenage girl in the early 2000s, she would have been surrounded by "not like other girls" philosophy, and hyperfemininity would be both pushed on her and demonized in popular culture. Because of all the pressure placed on gender roles and her lack of connection with other girls her age, it's no surprise that Clary would develop a certain bitterness towards people who perform gender in a way she won't.
With all of that out of the way, we get two teenage girls who have no fucking clue how to handle each other. They're both jealous of how the other one fits in with the guys in a way they can't. Obviously any friend group is made up of friendships which fit together in unique ways, but Clary and Isabelle both see themselves as The Girl, and thus are worried that the other one will make them redundant (Clary gets along with Jace, so will he still need Isabelle? Isabelle and Simon are getting along, will this take away Clary's place as Simon's most important person?) Of course this isn't something that will actually ruin their friendships, but Clary and Isabelle don't know that. Instead they need to learn how to engage with each other, and I enjoy that TMI actually shows them having those conversations. They're trying, but it doesn't all happen at once. Clary still has bitter thoughts about Isabelle's femininity, and she also looks down on other girls like Maia.
Speaking of Maia, there's a really good moment in COA where Clary starts grumbling to herself about how unfair it is that a werewolf can be pretty, and that Maia should be gross and hairy. She then catches herself, and literally thinks "this is exactly why I don't have any female friends," showing that thanks to Isabelle she's learning to recognize her internalized misogyny. She can hang out with other pretty girls, and it doesn't decrease her value as a person.
It's just so nice seeing a character whose internalized misogyny is actively acknowledged by the narrative and treated as a flaw she must overcome. So many female protagonists in the early 2000s (and other decades) had the hyper-femme "best friend" who they hated, but even though that's how Clary sees Izzy at first, she's able to look past it and see the ways they click together. The two of them don't become besties immediately, but they're at least able to get past that first layer of hostility.

Do you ever see people (either in real life or fiction) just like. pick up someone else’s instrument. Excuse me?? I’m sorry???
I feel like as musicians, irl most of us wouldn’t do this. It’s mostly non-musicians. Fiction, though? Media representation? Why do they have so many people just picking up instruments that DONT BELONG TO THEM, WITHOUT ASKING?
(piano discluded because. well. yeah.)
Like if I see a guitar, I’m not touching that guitar. I’m a pianist, not a guitarist. I don’t know how to play, and if I play incorrectly, I could end up damaging it. Violins? I will gaze upon them from afar. Trombones? I will admire their beauty, and maybe slide the thing if I’m told I can. Saxophones? Hoooo boy. So many knobs. I will study it and then hand it back over.
Especially with stuff like saxophones or clarinets etc. That person's MOUTH has been on that. I don't know if they've cleaned it! I don't know how reeds work! What if I break the reed? I don't know why I'm ranting about this as much because I don't see that ever but I'm still going to include it because I'm Just Like That.
Percussion? The percussion section is a bit difficult. Like if I see a drum set, yeah, I’m probably going to sit down and tap a cymbal once or twice (we’ve all done it, don’t lie). Bongos? Heck yeah man. I got tempo. I got rhythm. That box seat drum thing (I’m so sorry but I’ve never learned the name I just know it exists)? Yeah I’m gonna sit and I might tap it a few times. Cause I’ve got rhythm. I feel like percussion is different because as musicians, we can tap out a beat. We’ve got rhythm (the Phineas and Ferb song is in my head now). Like certain instruments yeahhh maybe not but. Yeah
the point of this is get your crusty musty hands off of other people’s instruments. even if it’s a ukulele. ask.
anD WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU TOUCH MY PIANO

Nothing just Alec being hesitant to leave Simon with the Consul and Inquisitor in City of Glass and immediately being suspicious of the both.
Nothing just ALEC HOLDING ONTO SIMON’S ARM AND NOT LETTING GO UNTIL THE INQUISITOR SHOWS UP
Nothing just ALEC TRYING TO LEAVE WITH SIMON AND KNOWING SOMETHING WAS UP
Nothing just the fact that this came right after their conversation in Alicante about how Alec was gay and Simon was being honest saying how he felt about Clary and that Alec should try to love Magnus
Nothing just Alec learning to care about Simon, and learning to care about Magnus, and growing out of what he was taught about downworlders and mundanes

That was... wonderful... to just hear it done for real, after... what? Four years of thinking about it? Wondering whether it would work, wondering if I'd written bits too fast, or too slow, or... to actually sort of... hear it done by real, professional people and the singers. It's... there isn't a word for it, actually.
Standing Stone, by Paul McCartney
Royal Albert Hall Performance (x)
Making Of Documentary (x)
Standing Stone is a 74 minute long classical piece of music, which Paul worked on for four years. It premiered at the Royal Albert Hall on 14 October 1997 with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Symphony Chorus, conducted by Lawrence Foster.
After his success with his first classical piece, The Liverpool Oratorio, Paul was commissioned to create some music to celebrate EMI's centenary. He came up with the idea of exploring "the way a Celtic man might have wondered about the origins of life and the mystery of human existence" and tied this in the with standing stones which to him symbolised something mystical and long lasting.

Photos by Linda McCartney, included on the album.
Paul wrote a poem to assist in getting the story he was trying to convey straight in his head, and it was printed in the booklet of the album. However, Paul wanted the music to work without the listener necessarily knowing the story, for the music to speak for itself, and so wanted to create a piece that "relies entirely on colours and effects drawn from orchestral and choral forces".
He also created two paintings to go alongside it:

I really recommend watching the documentary, Paul is absolutely delightful throughout the whole thing. It's the first time he'd used a computer and software to help him compose and he seems so excited to talk about it (and he has a Wallace & Gromit mouse mat!).
What's also interesting is how the rest of the team spoke about him. They all make a point that this was Paul's creation, and although David Matthews, John Harle, and Richard Rodney Bennet were brought in to assist with the composition, they all talk about Paul's talent, hard work, and the freshness of approach he brought. (The words 'benevolent dictator' may get used at some point, but they also speak of his kindness and generosity.)
It amazes me that someone with no formal music training could make a leap for pop/rock to classical. Composing for an entire 80 piece orchestra and 120 member choir is a completely different skillset to writing a song for the radio (and I'm not saying that's a lesser thing to be able to do, just different). The fact Paul was not only willing to take on the challenge and push himself, but created something so magical speaks to the sheer creative force that he is.
