9 Ways to Support Small Businesses
How many of the 9 recommendations below to help small businesses during the pandemic do you currently do? What ones can you add to your personal list? Why? What are the ethics underlining your decisions?
In the early weeks of the coronavirus pandemic, consumers buoyed small businesses with gift card purchases and online fund-raising campaigns. But as the pandemic persisted and restrictions constrained operating hours, many independent businesses continued to struggle.
Throughout the country, owners have creatively come up with strategies to keep businesses afloat, which benefits consumers, proprietors and a neighborhood’s commercial health
“There’s a multiplier effect,” said Bill Brunelle, the managing partner of Independent We Stand, an organization that helps its small-business members nationwide with marketing. “If you buy at a hardware store, that owner may hire a local accountant, while the employees may go to local restaurants and other nearby stores. The success of one business can steamroll through the economy.”
Ande Breunig, a real estate agent in Evanston, Ill., said, “Everyone complains about the lack of retailing, but we can only keep these businesses afloat with our participation.” Ms. Breunig started a Facebook group hoping to motivate residents to increase their support of local shops and services.
So how can consumers contribute to this virtuous cycle, especially during the all-important holiday season? Here are some tips to consider.
Buy Local
Before you reflexively hit “place order” with an e-commerce behemoth, find out whether a local retailer offers the same item. Independent bookstores, for example, can often order and quickly receive your selection. While you can get many things online, “go for a walk, go into a store, keep your mask on and shop,” said Ellen Baer, the president and chief executive of the Hudson Square Business Improvement District, devoted to an area west of SoHo in Manhattan. “Think of the people on the other end of the purchase.”
But shopping locally does not necessarily mean forgoing all online sites. Platforms like Bookshop and Alibris connect users to small booksellers. Clothing boutiques can sell through sites like Shopify, Lyst.com and Farfetch, as well as Sook, a newcomer that also hosts stores selling housewares.
When sending gifts to out-of-town friends and family, look for independent stores in their towns. And don’t assume that an e-commerce site can out-deliver a local business — even online sites have experienced delays because of the pandemic’s supply-chain disruption.
Go to the Source
There are always times when you need delivery. But on other days, think twice about how you order takeout. Rather than using a delivery app, ask for curbside pickup: Sites like Grubhub and Uber Eats charge restaurants fees that can reduce already thin margins. Instacart and Shipt, two companies that offer shopping and delivery, also charge the merchants who use the sites.
And while it is easy to purchase through a so-called digital shop on sites like Facebook and Instagram, shopping through third-party apps typically reduces the net profit for the merchant. (Facebook, which owns Instagram, has waived selling fees through the end of the year but will re-evaluate the practice in January, a Facebook spokeswoman said in an email.)
Be Social
Help bolster a business’s social media presence by “liking” hardware stores, dry cleaners and other independent shops on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Write positive reviews, post photos generously of purchases, and don’t forget to tag the businesses. And consider slightly broader efforts, like community email lists and social media groups like Nextdoor.
Retailers are savvy when it comes to selling, but many don’t fully understand that social media plays a crucial role, Ms. Breunig said. Through her Facebook group, she started an “adopt a shop” effort, in which residents select a store and commit to shopping there once a week (with no spending minimum) and posting about their experiences on Facebook. Within five days, Ms. Breunig said, 24 Evanston stores were “adopted.”
Beyond Charity
You can double the effect of philanthropic efforts by involving small businesses whenever possible. Order meals for essential workers from independent restaurants. Shop local when buying for clothing drives. And even if it’s a bit more expensive, purchase from local markets for food drives.
Suzanne Fiske, the director of on-air development for WHYY, the public radio and television stations in Philadelphia, had yet another idea. “Our listeners care about the mom-and-pop shop next door that is having trouble during the pandemic,” she said, so she asked donors on social media platforms to name their favorite local business when they contributed to be read aloud. The station awarded the two with the most votes — Horsham Square Pharmacy in Horsham, Pa., and MYX, a Bryn Mawr, Pa., start-up that creates a custom-blend beverage dispenser — radio advertising worth $3,500. The promotion also motivated listener donations, with more than 700 contributors calling on the day of the small-business challenge, close to three times the typical number, Ms. Fiske added.
Loyalty Counts
Service businesses — including personal trainers and hair salons — have especially been affected by the pandemic since they are among the trickiest to reopen. Gift cards help, but so does generous tipping for the ones that are open.
And remember that small businesses rely on regular customers, even as they try to attract new ones. Like so many others, Symone Johnson, who owns Indulge Hair Salon LLC in Englewood, N.J., was unprepared for a sudden closure in March. She began making videos to help her clients style their own hair without charge and hosted virtual sessions to recreate an online version to allow socializing.
Her clients offered to pay, but she declined, she said. “I didn’t do it for the financial benefit — it kept me busy and I didn’t think of myself.” New clients came after watching the videos, she said, and both they and the pre-existing clientele showed their generosity. “Instead of a 20 percent tip, it became a 50 percent tip,” Ms. Johnson said.
Accept the Rack Rate
Everyone loves a discount, but perhaps now is not the time. If you can afford it, pay full price.
Participate in Community Efforts
While the pandemic has left many feeling isolated, local business organizations are trying to fill the void with socially distanced community programs that can spur economic activity.
The Chamber of Commerce in Wellfleet, Mass., on Cape Cod, for example, is sponsoring a monthlong, online bingo contest in which each square is a “call to action,” including donating to a local nonprofit or taking a virtual class.
Share ideas with local business organizations or municipal governments seeking ways to help. Downtown Phoenix is expanding its traditional holiday market, Phoestivus, to use empty storefronts to showcase the creations of local artisans as well as some retailers’ inventory. Items displayed in the storefronts can be purchased on smartphones using QR codes or other forms of touch-free payment.
“It’s a way to bring a community out,” said Samantha Jackson, the senior director of strategy and community affairs at the nonprofit Downtown Phoenix Inc. “There are people who don’t come downtown who stick to their neighborhoods who are surprised at how nice it is.”
Offer Your Skills
If you’re an accountant, a lawyer, a banker, or a digital marketing specialist, to name just a few, local businesses may welcome your help. Kimberly Pardiwala, for example, who most recently led a business that arranged group sales for Broadway shows, grew concerned that restaurants would again suffer with the onset of cold weather. The Larchmont, N.Y., resident approached David Masliah, the owner of the town’s popular Encore Bistro to order prix fixe dinners regularly for her neighborhood association. “We are all so separate now, so it’s important to restore our community,” she said.
Practice Kindness
Proprietors are under enormous, sometimes existential, pressure right now, so share emotional support when you can. Ask retailers how they are holding up and inquire about employees who may now be unemployed.

The following post is the fifteenth in a series of diaries written by independent filmmaker and feminist scholar Ai Xiaoming and feminist activist Guo Jing. Both are living in Wuhan, at the initial center of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are the links to the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth parts of the series. Check out Global Voices’ special coverage of the global impact of COVID-19. This installment was written between March 28 and March 31, 2020. The original Chinese diaries are published on Matter News.
Guo Jing: March 28, 2020
After a two-month suspension of service, the subway in Wuhan began operating again today. There is a subway entrance right in front of my community, but very few people go in and out. Like many others, I want to get out of our residential district. When the barley tea that I ordered was delivered to my community this afternoon, I went to pick it up and asked the security guy when we can leave. He said that I should ask the grid controller and pointed to a telephone number pinned on the bulletin board. I called the grid controller. She told me that residents with a “green” health code in communities without recently confirmed case can go shopping in supermarkets for two hours. However, many supermarkets are not open to individual customers. Our community has no recent confirmed cases, but the closest supermarket is located in a district with confirmed cases. In addition, there is always a long line outside the supermarkets as they only allow a maximum of five people to shop inside. Therefore, the grid controller suggested that I avoid leaving our district for the moment. I am so tired of carrots, but I still need to finish the last few carrots stored at home. Carrot is officially on my list of least desirable foods for the near future.
Guo Jing: March 29, 2020
I have been asked several times recently, “How did social relationships change after the lockdown of Wuhan?” I do not have a simple answer. After the lockdown, we consciously keep social distance. Many people do not leave their home anymore. However, some have overcome their fear and anxiety and worked as volunteers to deliver supplies to people in need. Some from Hubei Province (the province where Wuhan is the administrative capital) are rejected by hotels outside of Hubei. However, some reach out to offer help. Some cities ban people from Hubei entering and returning to work. Other cities welcome them. Today around noon, a resident sent a message to the estate manager, “Can we go outside and shop in supermarkets?” The manager said, “If you have the (green) health code and certificate to return to work, you can go outside.” Another person asked, “I am staying in Hankou (another part of Wuhan city) now. Can I go back to the community?” The manager said, “If you have the (green) health code, you can come back.” They thanked the manager.
Guo Jing: March 30, 2020
I cannot tell how this pandemic has affected me yet. This disaster will leave indelible marks on many of us. When we walk down a street, we will think about what it looked like in 2020. When we eat a certain dish, it will remind us how we were reluctant to eat it during the lockdown. We will dream about who we met and what happened during the lockdown. I probably will not develop a special connection with this city, but I will remember that this city experienced a lockdown. I will not forget those empty streets. The number of takeaway orders in Wuhan has increased in recent days. On March 26, it was reported that the number of milk-tea orders has grown eight times compared to three days before. We have experienced a lot of bitterness, and a cup of milk tea has become a rare sweetness in life. I saw some people carrying their luggage on the streets. I do not know whether they were coming back or leaving.
Guo Jing: March 31, 2020
People have to act “normal” in order to maintain social stability. Some people believe that those who have lost their relatives or friends in this pandemic should keep their tears private after they receive the ashes of their relatives or friends, so as not to destabilize society. It is normal to cry in front of others during a relative's funeral. However, this norm has been denounced under these extreme conditions. Grief is not accepted by society. In such an abnormal society, how can individuals behave normally? A community volunteer sent a message to our chatroom: “Hi, I asked the community staff at the gate today, and they told me that we can go shopping with a (green) health code. Some pharmacies are open now and you can go and buy necessary items.” Someone asked, “Can the elderly go to see doctors and shop?” The volunteer replied, “You can go out with a green code.” He added, “Only one person per household can go out and for two hours each at a time. Currently not all supermarkets are open to the public. If you don't have urgent needs, it's better not to go outside too often. It is not safe outside, especially for seniors and children. When you go outside, please wear protective gear and keep social distance from others. It is better not to go somewhere crowded. If it is not necessary, please hold on until April 8.” I was so excited to see the message that tears came out of my eyes. I applied for the health code on Alipay and prepared to go out today. I went out at 11:35 AM. The security guy checked my purpose of going outside. I said, “shopping”. He asked me to scan a QR code with “WeChat” to check my health code. As my WeChat is not linked to my mobile phone number, my health code could not be applied through WeChat. The security guy took my temperature and asked me to fill in a form, including room number, temperature, purpose of going outside, and the time of going outside. He reminded me, “You only have two hours.” I only had two hours. I needed to go back at 1:35 PM. I took a bicycle and rode along streets that should be familiar, but looked foreign to me. I was like an alien arriving on Earth, excited and nervous. I was eager to see the “outside world.” I rode to the entrance of the river park and walked along the river bank. There were more people there than before the lockdown — there were parents playing with kids, lovers strolling along the bank and people fishing. Several days ago, someone asked me, “What is the first thing that you want to do when lockdown is lifted?” I said, “I want to walk by the river and yell.” After I ate some food, I walked towards the river, I took a breath and yelled loudly at the Yangtze River, “Ah~~~”. After me, two others yelled, too. One of them yelled three times. It seems that we have been stranded for too long. I yelled again and again. I felt refreshed after that.

Packaging for the socially driven generation with Delta Global CEO
What’s the future of branding and packaging after the 10th edition of the World Branding Awards?
After hosting the 10th edition of the World Branding Awards in November last year, we got to thinking about what makes a brand relevant to the regular consumer on a daily basis. Some of the top brands in various categories came together to celebrate the biggest branding accolade in the world, which only meant that they were doing something right in their branding. For to be a winner, a brand would need to be voted on by a majority of consumers and be the top of their class. How then can a brand make itself loved by a whole country, or region, or even the whole world, especially when most people are increasingly reliant on technology?
youtube
In a recent interview, Robert Lockyer, CEO at Delta Global, a packaging supplier to brands such as Radley and Tom Ford, shared and discussed how on pack a brand must make itself recognisable and have an impact within imagery shared on platforms such as Instagram.
With the world tied to their screens, social media has fast become the foundation for modern communication. Brand presence via Instagram, Facebook and Twitter is now a necessity rather than a choice, therefore a brand’s packaging must matter as much as the product inside.
Once upon a time packaging was only viewed by the end-customer and was simply about protective functionality. But as buyers continually look to social media to influence their purchasing decisions, and more of us photograph our experiences on a daily basis, social media has the potential to open up brands to millions of viewers every day.
In fact, 60 percent of Instagram users alone claim they have discovered at least one new product on the platform.
Robert indicated that packaging is about bringing your brand to life in a recognisable way, saying that photogenic, experiential and connected packaging is now a must for brands. And, he discussed why social-ready packaging should be a priority in retail.
Make your messaging and design memorable
Aligning your brand messaging with the materials and colouring you use is important. Bold and minimal designs efficiently communicate your brand message as they are easy to read and make the most impact.
Social media is fast-paced, filled to the brim with content. There’s a lack of viewing time and brands are fighting to stand out as people scroll down their feeds. Whether it is logo, font or colour, brands need to clearly mark themselves.
Luxury brands such as Gucci make a statement with their double and mirrored ‘GG’ emblem while Tiffany & Co. are acclaimed for their turquoise branding. In fact, the company have just opened Europe’s first ‘Blue Box’ café and taxis in Harrods, Knightsbridge. The immersive and striking interior radiates luxury and creates the illusion that you are dining inside one of the brand’s famed jewellery boxes.
Though it does not feature in every post the slogan, ‘Because You’re Worth It’ is an internationally recognised catchphrase coined by Parisian beauty brand L’Oréal. It is a thoughtful celebration of women and is still associated with their products today. In a recent Valentine’s Day campaign, their Rogue Signature lip stain featured a ‘Worth It’ heart in the image.
“If you were to remove the brand name from the products of these retailers, an audience would still know who they were from these other recognisable elements. Brands need to look at clever ways they can do this throughout their packaging so that no matter who ‘posts’ their brand on social media they will be a familiar face for customers,” said Robert.
In the FMCG sector, using a large impactful orange peel font, McVities Jaffa Cakes implemented an iconic image onto their packs of the ‘full moon, half moon, total eclipse’ ways to eat a Jaffa Cake. It stemmed from a 90s TV advert that mimicked the solar eclipse and the brand now use it as a visual communication tool which has an emotional connection with the customer as people reflect on what personality trait they are within the four Jaffa Cake eating styles.
“It is a repetitive strategy that means for years people have associated their brand with the entertaining image and fun messaging on the box, it encourages people to re-enact the eating styles in photos on social media.”
Customers are marketeers – so give them an experience
User-generated content is authentic and resonates with users as it is created by someone other than the brand – not to mention it saves you time and money as your customer becomes the marketeer.
“Packaging must have a ‘wow’ factor in order to entice the user to photograph or video it. Building anticipation and excitement around the opening of the gift or product is as important for the customer as the product inside.”
Unboxing videos for instance have taken the internet by storm and they collect millions of views every day. YouTube, Snapchat and Instagram Stories, in particular, have become real-time platforms that will showcase these experiences to huge audiences. There is just something enchanting about opening a beautiful package and discovering its contents that makes people want to share that moment with others.
People trust other people and social media creates an efficient electronic word-of-mouth marketing platform as well as natural endorsement which seems true to life – unlike an ad. Using social handles can increase your virality
Brands must encourage the customer to follow, share and interact with them on their own social media. By cleverly adding hashtags and handles to your packaging you create a call to action that makes you instantly findable. And people can make a new purchase via your shoppable feed if you take them directly to it.
If a package is personalised, it is also more sharable because it becomes part of the customer’s own brand. Customising the experience on a pack makes the receiver feel special, like they are part of your entity – you just have to look at Coca-Cola’s hugely successful ‘Share a Coke’ campaign, where people literally went to the shop just to find, buy and share their ‘personalised’ coke.
Create smart or connected packaging
With consumers spending over three hours a day on their mobile devices and the eCommerce sector soaring, packaging must stay digitally connected and encourage return to the brand online.
Tapping into the social media culture and persona of their customers, Japanese skincare brand Skin Aqua reversed the information on their packaging, so that it read the correct way around when shoppers took a selfie.
More recently, L’Oreal teamed up with ModiFace an augmented reality beauty app which allowed consumers to ‘try before you buy’ their makeup through the phone’s front-facing camera. Telling their customers about the app through their packaging helped them to retain and gain new customers.
There are many ways brands are ensuring their packaging is ‘connected’. Scannable QR codes, for instance, can offer a whole host of traceability and interactive elements. It widens the ability of the pack allowing consumers to easily access product quality information, re-order items, watch videos, read advice, participate in competitions and even receive personalised communication and customer service.
The influencer and ambassador effect
Do not just imagine your packaging in the hands of customers, but the hands of paid-for marketing professionals. Social platforms are the hub of the influencer community. Paid to feature in sponsored feeds, run product placements on their own channels and become endorsers and ambassadors; they create highly curated content for the brands they work with.
MatchesFashion’s eco-friendly staple marble effect packaging is so beautiful and reusable that Instagrammers and Pinterest users desire it to be part of their styling shots. Interior design influencers, for instance, are reusing the packaging to style their shelves and desks, as storage facilities and as a background in various other lifestyle flat lays.
“The knock-on effect of packaging for a socially driven generation is that you become stylish, your brand becomes intentionally included in every photo. It gives the consumer a feeling of exclusivity and bring your brand to the masses,” added Robert.
“Raising brand awareness and generating new customers is just one benefit to the added value of social media-based packaging. It can also prove a vital research method, brands can learn about their customers social media and buying habits and it can tailor how you present your products in the future.”

Every now and then, you hear those stories of someone entering a competition AND against all statistical odds… winning, whether that be the X-millions super jackpot, or the international trip of their dreams. Lisa Dingelmaier is one of those winners, though, her success wasn’t by chance, and the prize was more of an opportunity.
Austrian-born Lisa enrolled in an Interior Styling and Decoration course at International School of Colour and Design (ISCD) after relocating to Sydney with her Australian partner. Upon completing her certification, she had her heart set on undertaking the Interior Design course with ISCD, and so entered an associated competition where Greg Natale, of the eponymous Sydney-based design studio, was one of the judges. Though not successful, Lisa’s incredibly diligent application (the A5 board she submitted included a QR code to this imaginative video, which she’d worked on for two weeks straight!) made such an impression that ISCD added another award for her. As a result, she was connected to a new mentor and an incredibly valuable industry contact in Greg.
The course guided Lisa through concept-based design, giving her the competence and confidence to design interiors based on a client brief, just like she hoped she ‘would get to in the real world’. Lessons dived deep into the theory of colour as well as mastering the elements and principles of design, ‘which definitely honed my skills and fine-tuned my eye for colour and design,’ tells the 29-year-old. On top of all that, she also took up the opportunity to gain additional industry experience: working as a stylist’s assistant on photo shoots for House & Garden magazine.
The Greg Natale Design connection Lisa has fostered over the duration of her degree provided the key to her eventual career pathway. Working part-time at his revered Surry Hills-based firm, it wasn’t long before the student proved herself an asset to Greg’s team. Upon graduating, she was asked to go full-time as a Junior Interior Designer at the studio in 2016, before more recently being promoted to Interior Designer.
The driven creative gave us more insight into how she got the most out of her studies, and why you should always make plenty of time for a job application that piques your interest…
The most important verb in the get-your-dream-job lexicon is…
… passion.
Passion for your work and a sense of fulfilment go hand-in-hand, it’s all about motivation and getting a job WELL done. When you’re passionate about your work, you always seem to find the energy to work just one more hour, you keep digging until you find answers or make that one more critical phone call.
I landed this job by…
… I entered a competition for a scholarship at ISCD, where Greg was one of the judges. Happily, I was awarded a partial scholarship and with that came three one-on-one mentoring sessions with Greg. He is a great supporter of young designers; not only did I gain so much insight from these sessions during my studies but I was also invited to assist, from time-to-time, in the office when I wasn’t busy in class. Having the opportunity to soak everything up in that environment (how a real job is done and how a creative process works, as well as all the behind-the-scenes work like scheduling, creating amazing mood boards and utilising an unbelievable library of incredible samples), while I was still a student, was incredible.
During that time, I displayed my work ethic and the passion I had, plus I was always keen to help out wherever I was needed. Greg is very passionate about his work, so he recognises this in other people. Once I finished my studies Greg offered me a position in the studio – a dream come true!
A typical day for me involves…
After a quick coffee, the company’s architecture and interior design teams gather with Greg for a morning work-in-progress meeting, going over current projects and covering off any other matters that have come up.
Next, I usually get on top of emails that have come in overnight – we work with a lot of suppliers and clients overseas so you have to be conscious of the time difference.
Depending on the day, we might have a few supplier presentations in the morning, which keep us up to date with the latest trends and products out there. I enjoy these as they can be very inspirational and get your creative juices flowing.
I usually spend the rest of the day working through projects. This involves working with Greg, the senior designers, our product design team, our graphic designer, and marketing and admin departments. Depending on what stage the project is in, it can vary from helping with concepting new ideas, sourcing materials or products, to calling in samples and pricing from suppliers to ordering furniture, finishes, and fixtures and lastly, helping out with installations.
The most rewarding part of my job is…
… seeing how Greg creates his award-winning spaces and communicates and sells the creative ideas to clients – it’s super exciting being able to be a part of that process.
I deeply enjoy the early stages of a new project, witnessing the concept come together by taking a client’s brief, collecting different materials from stone to timber and fabrics and seeing how Greg brings that all to life – creativity and imagination run free, ideas are bounced around and designs are visualised into a language the client can understand.
On the other hand, the most challenging aspect is…
… multitasking. Working on many projects in various stages and juggling deadlines can be at times stressful. Our interiors and architecture teams usually have up to 30 projects running at any one time. So, you definitely need to keep your cool and be super organised. I have become a big fan of lists!
The culture of my workplace is…
I love working in such a buzzing, creative office full of happy people. Greg works very collaboratively with his clients, and he encourages the sharing of ideas in our studio – we’re creating interiors, architecture, and products, which makes for such a fast-paced atmosphere!
My idea of the perfect workplace is…
… where I am now.
Not only is it providing me with opportunities for growth and development, but our office is also a very inspirational space in which to work. Coming to work every day isn’t hard when you work in such a beautifully designed space too!
The best piece of advice I’ve received is…
… work hard, stay positive, dream big, AND don’t let anyone tell you differently.
Over the years, my workplace has…
… continued to grow and grow. When I first started being mentored by Greg he had just moved the studio into a brand new custom designed headquarters in Surry Hills to accommodate everyone!
Since then, Greg Natale Design has celebrated 17 years in business, and in 2018 released a second book through Rizzoli in New York, as well as began distributing new accessories and product lines around the world. We now have a trade and media showroom, along with warehousing and clients all over the world. It’s been amazing being a part of this!
In the next five years, I’d like to…
… develop new skills, including becoming proficient in more 3-D rendering software like Revit, and improving my AutoCAD skills. I’d like to continue to work with interesting people, and simply see where the opportunities take me. The Maison&Objet trade fair in Paris is definitely on my bucket list!

Design Theme
This multi-residential design project focuses on creating an environment for households which share one common interest or experience.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Although they may lead different lifestyles, the common interest is what forms the connection between those families and is the rezoning behind them wanting to live together within that environment.
Design Topic
Because of the site’s close proximity to a baseball stadium I thought it would be appropriate for my topic to focus on building an environment for a client who’s interests are in the sport of baseball, hence the following topic of choice.
The site is located near the Taoyuan International Baseball Stadium.
Exif_JPEG_PICTURE
One Team, Seven Home Runs
This is a play on words. ‘One Team, Seven Homeruns’ symbolises the unity of seven households whos common interest lies in the love of the sport baseball. It also hints to the historic event which originally brought these households together.
Clients’ Details
Background
These 9 boys grew up together playing on the same baseball team in elementary school. They became very close with their coach. In a spectacular feat, their team won a match after hitting seven consecutive home runs. This lead one of the members to make it to the Major League. That moment solidified their friendship which lasted through the loss of a team member who unfortunately passed away. It caused them to go separate ways for a couple years but their love for the sport lead them to pursue various careers in the field. Although they were distances apart they remained like close relatives. Some of them have families of their own. They want their kids to be raised in an environment where they can share an experience and grow to appreciate the sport. Some would like to retire from their careers preferably somewhere quiet. After attending the wedding ceremony of one of the members, the family bond grew even more. They saw all the benefits the continued nurturing of their common interest. So together they have all decided to settle conveniently close to the Taoyuan International Baseball Stadium.

Design Concept
A baseball has three exterior aesthetic features which are the two irregularly shaped faces and the continuous seam line which weaves them together. The Seam Line Concept serves as a symbolic representation of the weaving together of multiple households who wish to continue building a bond surrounding the sport of baseball. This is visually expressed on the exterior of the design with a series of continuous alternating loops resembling the irregularly shaped faces of a baseball.
The concept also includes an outfitted curving steel structure with zigzagging elements that resembles the seam of a baseball and appears to hug the walls and floors weaving them together. This steel structure will be able to grow flowers can will act as a green wall.
The concept was applied once an analysis of the site conditions and required space was done. The mass model indicates how the spaces were divided and arranged based on the analysis.
The sun’s path was also taken into account and is part of the reason for the tapering feature at the top. This feature allows the suns light shine on the exterior of the common space for an extended time during the day.
Design Description
