Journal of Being: an alterhuman zine CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

An upcoming zine with a focus on sharing alterhuman experiences through personal essays. It is open to all nonhuman, otherkin, therian, fictionkin, etc. If you're wondering if your experiences count, the answer is yes and we'd love to hear them!

While submissions are expected to be personal essays, you do not have to worry about following specific essay presentation. This is not an English class.

The submission deadline is October 1st, 2024, while the zine is slated to be published around January 1st, 2025. The completed zine will be uploaded to itch.io for free.

Essay Guidelines

Submissions cannot be NSFW/R-18.

Font must be New Times Roman or similar. Font size must be 16pt, and essay must be double spaced.

Minimum word count is 500. Maximum is 8,000.

You may send up to 3 essays per individual; system members are counted as individuals and can sent up to 3 each.

Please upload your essays as .docx file.

How accessible of a [source] is your ‘types?

Slightly venty.

Recently, I’ve been playing games where you can be a draconic character, and I played as my kardiatype because its body map ([eastern] dragon, furred body, wingless) is a lot more accessible than mine (fully furred body with feathered wings, no breath weapon).

And it’s making something in me “twitchy” and “itchy”. Like I’m happy to get more connection with that dragon, but I want to feel like myself too, to wear my own “skin”, even if virtually.

It’s like, if people have different types or multiple of alterhuman identification that have stuff that are comparably more accessible in products and media in comparison to their other types. Say someone have a linkttype that is more central to their very being, then they got a hearttype that is more a afterthought but have more accessible source, and maybe someone can understand this sort of, not quite frustration, more like a :/

I believe that one's alterhuman (or therian, otherheart, etc.) identity can blossom over time as you encourage it. That's how it's working for me.

looking for a specific term!

is there a name for an animal/creature that you may not associate with yourself, but others associate strongly with you and have therefore become apart of your nonhuman identity?

I am constantly referred to as a horseshoe crab my by friends (they think my soul's purpose is to go through carcinization) and my boyfriend talks a lot about how I'm a black panther to him.

(if you put those two together you get some feral sort of aquatic creature, which is what i am! so it's cool that they're seeing me as these things without fully knowing the details)

I have no real connection to these animals, but being referred to and treated like them has made me form what I can only call an otherlink!

is there a term specific to this? would it be considered an otherlink? if there isn't anything specific to this, i may try to coin something.
