LYDIA LUNCH, Toronto 1988
The closest thing I had to a photographer's studio in early 1988 was an unused room behind the bar at the Silver Dollar Room, a former showbar-turned-strip club that was reopened as a rock club the previous year. This was where I'd do a series of portrait shoots that turned out to be pivotal in my early career, beginning with Lydia Lunch, who came to Toronto on January 26, 1988 on a spoken word tour. Lydia was a star in my little world, famous since her band Teenage Jesus & the Jerks had four songs on the landmark No New York compilation album a decade earlier. She was by this point known as a force of nature, making records and films and publishing books, with a personal style that was as influential as Siouxsie Sioux in that every town's scene had at least a couple of dozen young women who looked exactly like her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lydia Lunch showed up performing the material she'd later release on her Oral Fixation record, a pioneer of the spoken word genre (along with former Black Flag singer Henry Rollins - more about him shortly) that would turn out to have real longevity. My photos of her were meant to accompany an article my friend Tim was writing - a paean to the woman who was a kind of nihilist sex symbol in the underground subcultures that had formed since punk rock. So I tried to approach the shoot as something like glamour photography, not dissimilar to the photos I'd take of actress (and onetime Bond Girl) Jane Seymour for a fashion magazine a couple of weeks later. Bringing along my little portable studio - a light stand and umbrella bounce, a portable flash and a big white painter's tarp I carrried around in a gym bag - I cleared a space in the storage room at the Silver Dollar and found an unbroken bar stool that I place midway between my tarp backdrop and my flash.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Delivering a decent shot must have been a priority when I photographed Lydia Lunch because I shot two whole rolls of 120 film that evening hoping for something worthwhile. If you know anything about Lydia you'll have some sense of how intimidating she can be, by choice. (I don't think she'd have a problem with that statement.) My contact sheets show me moving closer with my camera as I got a bit more confident with my subject, who (perhaps accidentally) presented a bit more than her usual defiant face as we talked and took pictures. Lydia had just released Honeymoon in Red, working with guitarist Rowland S. Howard (about whom more soon) and members of The Birthday Party; when I told Howard (in the same back room at the Silver Dollar) that I'd photographed Lydia just a few weeks later, he asked how she was, and I said that there were occasional frames where I got a glimpse of the Catholic girl from upstate New York. He smiled and agreed, laughing that while he'd seen the same aspect of Lydia, he was sure she wouldn't be pleased about it being revealed.

Lots of fun today at Montes Showbar Grill for the East Coast Blues Society (ECBS) Maritime’s to Memphis fundraiser. So great to see the Canadian Maritime blues community come out and show their support. Joe Murphy and The Waterstreet Blues Band and fellow Cape Bretoner Jon Hines will compete in the Memphis International Blues Challenge 2023. Best of luck guys! Foster Hewitt was Canada’s original hockey broadcaster, the voice of Hockey Night in Canada for several decades, and the man who coined the famous call, “He shoots! He scores!”
There was also a controversial side to Foster Hewitt that few listeners were aware of, but which made many of his colleagues uncomfortable.
The sports writer Scott Young wrote, “One other side of Foster’s character was a thinly veiled prejudice against minorities.”
Bud Turner of MacLaren Advertising, the agency that had the Hockey Night in Canada account said, “He offended me personally on many occasions. He was highly prejudiced, awful, yet obviously he had some sense of propriety in that what he said depended a lot on who his audience was.”
Foster Hewitt never openly displayed his racist streak if, say, his waiter in a restaurant was Black. He would wait until they were out of earshot before making his disparaging remark.
“But other times he seemed reckless of consequences,” said Scott Young. “Once, entering the Flame Showbar in Detroit after a hockey game, he stepped inside the door and exclaimed loudly enough for at least those nearby to hear, ‘Geez, the place is full of [racial slur]s!’ … Foster left.”
Many years later, Canadian Sports Network’s number one man, Ted Hough, tried to coerce Hewitt into removing the blackface lawn jockey he displayed in his yard. The last thing the show wanted was a Foster Hewitt scandal. But he refused to remove it, claiming it was a matter of principle.

18 September 1995, Blur at The Showbar on Bournemouth pier (Seaside Tour)
photos by Wilko (thank you!): The same night Oasis where to play at the BIC a stone’s throw away but I’m sure that got postponed due to the media storm of that time, as I saw them not long after. The photos where taken on a disposable camera and are very hazy probably due to all the cigarette smoke, Damon was handing out beer at this point and I managed to blag a can. This was the best night of my life as a teen growing up in the 90s I was very lucky to always see the band every time they came to town. [X]

How on earth is it Friday already?! When I was younger it felt like weeks would last years and years a lifetime! Now I feel as though I blink and I've missed a month.
Been a crazy first week for the holidays - positives and negatives moments as always.
Here's a photo dump of our caravan staycation in Skegvegas which I took loads of photos and videos (of course)
The kids enjoyed swimming, made friends, enjoyed the park, enjoyed 'coronavirus restricted' kids entertainment - @parkdeanresorts and @milkshake_tv have collabed for the kids entertainment - and we also fed the geese and ducks, one of them was a bit kinky and bit my butt.
With the weather being how it's been I've been full on meltingggg but the children have definitely enjoyed spending time together in the sunshine (their other favourite activity is bickering and refusing to go to bed but that's a whole other paragraph)
Some positives this week - can't share too much of the juicy tea though - that's what DMs and group chats are for:
•Winnie did her first poop on the toilet! Major breakthrough! (Definitely not showing that photo 😂)
• Trix has been out and about with her friends, she's grounded today but the positive is that she's actually socialising.
• Oscar is Oscar. He loved The Showbar in the evening and listening to music which was nice to see. I love him dearly but he definitely needs regular walks and meal times for him to be tolerable as he's been pretty full on this week - between him and his older sister I really do find it challenging at times!
• Positives for me - I actually wore a t-shirt in public. I know it sounds like the most basic thing but I absolutely abhor my body - it's something I've spoke about before, my struggles with Post Natal Depression and using food as a substitute for feelings etc... But my body is unrecognisable to me as a plus size so I wear baggy jumpers to hide myself but the weather being how it's been I had no choice but to wear a t-shirt... Was I hyper aware of myself the entire time? 100% yes. Do I resemble the Lorax. 100% yes. But was I cooler. 100% yes.
• My nephew turned 3. My sister kept him alive 3 years. It's a celebratory moment!

Post four of the “We Didn’t Start the Fire” series is of singer John Alvin Ray aka Johnnie Ray. Ray stands out among many of his contemporaries in that he was partially deaf in his right ear due to an accident when he was a child. His singing style due to his impairment led to the creation of a unique singing style.  The road to success for Ray was a rocky one.
Ray as a young man would perform at local venues in his home state of Oregon and would move to Hollywood in 1949 to focus on a career in acting. Things didn’t work out for him in Tinsletown and he decided to shift gears and focus on his singing. It would take his performing at the predominately “Black and tan” club known as the Flame Showbar in Detroit to get discovered. Ray’s style was heavily influenced by the African-American artists that performed at the Flame and his performance style predated the style that would mark the early years of Rock and Roll. Ray’s style of crying while singing would lead to his being given the monikers of "Mr. Emotion", “Prince of Wails” and the “Nabob of Sob.” His singing and stage performance styles would lead crooner Tony Bennett to describe Ray as being "father of rock and roll.”
Tumblr media
By 1951, Ray, with the Four Lads, would record "Whiskey and Gin" and "Tell the Lady I Said Goodbye." which would be followed by the hit double sided recording of "Cry" and "The Little White Cloud That Cried." This would lead Ray to sit at number one on the charts for eleven weeks selling over three million copies. This would shoot Ray to the stratosphere.
Ray would make many appearances on the Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town television show and would be part of the cast of the movie There's No Business Like Show Business (1954) alongside Ethel Merman and Marilyn Monroe. Ray’s popularity on the United States would be in decline by the mid 1950′s though he would remain popular in the United Kingdom with a number of top-10 hits on the UK pop charts. Ray’s popularity in the United States was also attributed to his being arrested in 1959 on charges of solicitation of an undercover police officer at a Detroit gay bar. He had a prior arrest for solicitation in 1951 what flew under the radar since he had yet to reach stardom. He would continue to perform in the UK throughout 1960′s, 1970′s and 1980′s.
In total Ray would have seven top-10 US hits, eight top-10 UK hits and Ray would be memorialized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
Ray would pass away on February 24, 1990 of liver disease after years of alcohol abuse.

❌ THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED ❌
🗓 Saturday 31st July 2021
📍 Riva Showbar Preston
We are extremely disappointed to be cancelling this ‘what would have been’ an amazing event.
Unfortunately, due to poor advanced ticket sales both the venue and ourselves as a promoter ‘financially’ cannot risk pay on the door attendees at this time. This is due to there being no events of this kind for us for over 16 months. Plus due to the fact that this event was at a budget price of £10 per ticket to see two amazing tribute bands in one night, we are almost 75% behind the required amount to cover costs to run this event due to the poor advanced sales.
It’s very disappointing as all of the venue staff deployed to the evening including a lighting and sound engineer are also cancelled as they would need paying - and ultimately the bands do too.
🙏Please please please look at all of Riva’s upcoming events, not just our ones but everyone’s events and if you want to go, PLEASE PURCHASE YOUR TICKET(s) in advance so that once we pass 100 we know it can go ahead as other shows may be cancelled as at this time it is not possible for most to take yet more financial losses as our industry has lost so much already for the duration of this horrible pandemic.
Even promoting and marketing this event has financial cost implications and unfortunately that is costs we can’t get back.
Please support this incredible venue by purchasing your tickets for upcoming events - especially now with restrictions lifted as we need to more than ever #SupportLiveMusic and #SaveOurVenues and #SaveOurStages.
A big shout out and thank you to those who have purchased tickets as some actually purchased theirs for the original date in 2020 prior to it being rescheduled - and most importantly apologies for not being able to run this even for you.
🎟 Refunds will be issued to all customers who purchased tickets and contact will be made over the next few days.
Thank you for your patience and apologies again 😢🤘🏻🎤🎸

Best Pubs in North Goa to Party Hard All Night Long
When it comes to partying, Goa is the place which comes to our mind at the first place. With a number of bars, shacks and pubs, Goa is referred as the party capital of India.
If you are a party-animal-type guy, North Goa is where you should visit atleast once in your lifetime. Great beers, fascinating nightlife and maddening dance is what you are going to witness in Goa.
Here are some of the most fascinating pubs in North Goa you must visit while are in Goa for your holidays.
Tumblr media
Soro: The Village Pub: This is one of the busiest shacks in and around North Goa. The subtle yet cheeky décor of this place is stand outs the most. The cosy yet happening atmosphere is what attracts people every now and then. If you are in Soro, one thing which you should try along with their fusion food is their Sangria.
Tumblr media
Cohiba: If you are a party animal, then this place is certainly for you. With great music and dance floor to accompany your drink, Cohiba is a party paradise for every6 party lover out there. Located at the Fort Aguada Road, the best way to get there is getting some car rentals in Goa. This not only helps you to reach there without any hassle, but you do not have to worry about getting local transport while coming back from there.
Tumblr media
Watson‘s Grub Pub: This place is a heaven for all beer lovers. Having both indoor and outdoor sitting arrangements, the place is well decorated with cheeky décors and serves some mouth-watering delicacies. The place is well suitable for families too, as they have a separate section for families.
Tumblr media
Café Mojo Pub and Bistro: E-Beer is now a thing in Goa and there are very pubs which offer you the same. Café Mojo in Panaji is one of those who let you enjoy E-beers. You can self serve beer in your table with a table-tap which is provided. Apart from beer, one can also explore a wide range of foreign liquors here. For all beer loving people out there, this is a must visit place for them.
Tumblr media
Showbar Exchange: This is one of its kind pubs in Goa at present. As the name says, the pricing of alcohol here depends in the demand of the same at a particular point of time. This place is fun and tricky to get sloshed in here.
The above are some of the most popular pubs in North Goa for party-loving tourist visiting Goa. These places are almost crowded with good people and vibes throughout the year. Goan local transports are always a trouble to tourist visiting there. However there are some agencies who lend you car rentals in Goa with self drive facilities. Thus if you are planning to visit any of these pubs getting a rental car is a great idea, as you do not want to wait for local transports after getting drunk or sloshed.

Friday Night’s Alright!
On Friday night Me and Spencer’s ARC Daddy (Chris) headed out with friends leaving the kids and babies with Nanny Sue!
She’s such a brave lady taking them all on!
Now the group of friends we were out with us girls met through sure start 5 years ago and our husbands hit it off too, we are so lucky to have such good friends in our lives however we have never been out as a group before without the kids!
We went to the opening night of a new showbar in Lincoln. We stayed out until 4am! I’m not sure we have ever stayed out that long before (Ok maybe when I was in my early 20’s)
BlogOn Toys
On Saturday morning me & Chris had to catch a train to Manchester for the BlogOn Conference!
I haven’t  been to a blogging conference for ages you know due to me being heavily pregnant and then poorly and then with babies so  This year I decided to head to BlogOn Toys in Manchester. The last time I went it was held at the Manchester Science Museum Now though the team are hosting it at the amazing venue of Hotel Football!
As my anxiety has been playing up recently and the fact that myself and Spencer’s ARC Daddy haven’t had much of a chance to breathe this year I decided to bring him along too! He has recently got into instagram and Is my support on this weird blogging, vlogging journey I have chosen to take!
So after a manic night early morning on Friday we got off the train still feeling a little hyper from the night before!
We met up with a few other bloggers at Wagamams I was dressed as a Christmas pudding due to us attending the Christmas party after dinner!
I did get a few stares well you would dressed in Christmas dress in September!
We didn’t stay very late at the party as we were so tired from the night before! I did hear that there were bloggers still dancing as the DJ was packing up!
Sunday morning, we headed to the conference, grabbed our epic goody bags (no it’s not a windup take a suitcase trust me!) then grabbed a sausage sandwich for breakfast, bough tombola tickets and raffle tickets then headed to the welcome chat! A very relaxed welcome, swearing and all! By Laura of Tired Mummy of Two
I chose to attend public speaking and online presenting with Sophie Mei Lan Hale  and Lee Furness. They really did throw everyone in at the deep end. I actually cried as they wanted us to do a live video there and then, I’m not sure if it was nerves or tiredness or the fact i was coming down with a cold but I didn’t have anything to say and suddenly couldn’t think of anything I was passionate about!
Next up was creating awesome GoPro videos with Alex Wing!
This talk has throughly refueled my passion for creating cinematic vlogs! I can’t wait for our next Spencer’s ARC road trip to get some footage.
After the very delicious Christmas buffet lunch complete with sausages with bacon wrapped round, and mince pies we decided to head down to the brand den!
The brand den is where us bloggers can meet up with pr companies and direct with companies to exchange details take part in some crazy competitions and check out any new products brands are wanting to promote!
After we had made the rounds picking up lots of freebies we had missed the next session wich was a Photography Hub, a chance to make some flatlay scenes and receive some advice from those that are far more advanced that me! We did manage to catch the end of the session before we nearly missed the cake break.
The cake sponsored by Partypopteenies was delicious as always and went down really well with the prosecco provided by The Co-op      During the cake break we had a chat with one of the speakers of the day non other than Alex Winters former Cbeebies presenter. Such a lovely bloke!
The last talk of the day I decided to head to how to write a book! Now I have no Idea what I would write but i think the idea of writing a book a great goal to achieve! I thought this talk may give me a little inspiration and it has so watch this space!
The end of the day is the best event! It’s the raffle We won a couple of prizes but some walked out with armfuls the raffle consisted of all the prizes from the toy awards wich us blogger had voted on throughout the day! it was an epic haul i have to say!
Both me and Spencer’s ARC daddy (who I think just tagged along for the prosecco and the selfie with another cbeebies celeb.) had a great day and are now looking forward to booking for the May conference too!
See you all in May!
Nina x
