this little one is a campy, silly, classic 80's romance based entirely off of one of my all time fave films romancing the stone, essek of course will be entering the role of romance novelist joan wilder, caleb shall be the dashing colton. its gonna be utterly ridiculous, sappy and just so much fun to write and i can't wait to get started!!

but in general terms i am a rogue player the majority of the time! i had a wood elf rogue inquisitor and a human rogue in both inquisition and origins. and will probably continue the trend… rogue is the archetype of my heart

I fear I may be letting you both down 😅 that's what i've retroactively working-titled my creative writing honors thesis from college lmao. it began as a nano project that i then reworked into a presentable "piece" by thesis presentation time.

(grief cw) the original nano novel (called éire advocens at the time) was about a young woman who lost her mother going on a journey to track down her biological father. as nanos do, it morphed into a sapphic road trip romance along the way, then in my revisions for thesis purposes, it evolved further into an experimental prose/poetry thing. and THEN my uncle suddenly died that year and in retrospect, that had a heavy hand in my reshaping of the project, not just in content (which was accidental, but it had already been about grief) but also in my apathy toward it (obv i had other stuff to care abt than a stupid school project).

I got the honors thesis, great, whatever, i'm in a post-graduation "what do i do with life" depression fog, my hard drive completely crashes losing whatever since last backup, i don't care i'm depressed. UNTIL i'm less depressed and think to revisit the project and can't find any trace of what i actually submitted as final form of my thesis project. at best i have the nanowrimo word vomit version and the revised for others' eyes (aka shorter) version.

and while i'm not enamored by the idea or very invested in its completion or rebirth or what have you, it does truly feel like The Piece That Got Away and i feel like i. owe it to the story or to myself to make something tangible out of the idea.

also fun fact: (for context, the 'final' version primarily focused on the main character finding a hookup in a gay club in San Francisco to cope with her mother's passing) the only feedback from my thesis hearing/presentation thing that i remember they wanted to see the main character grapple with her sexuality more. that the gay bits were like. too 'happy' and 'straightforward.' it made me so angry that i carry that anger today kljhgf

tl;dr: It was my college honors thesis that has been partially lost. I feel like I owe it to the project and myself to make something of it. I call it Golden Gay Bridge because in every rewrite i try, i get stuck in the minutiae of the two girls meeting at a gay bar in san francisco. oh god and i've just remembered it was supposed to have some water magic/magical realism style stuff in it lkjhjgf

5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?

I threw this one out into a Discord semi-recently and am throwing it here now too, as it's a neat idea I'd love to see someone one day write, I just don't have the time to do the research or planning of it: The gist was a conversation around Comprehend Languages and automatic translation and how the nuances could work — is it based on literal translation that could be mangled? Translating it using your native idioms? Using language the caster is most comfortable with? And it led to a thought of how it would be fun to see the wizards using it in Aeor and each getting a slightly different meaning of the same text because it translated a colloquialism differently and they only work it out later

10. Is there a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?

sleep, with benefits I honestly thought like, me and my four friends would really enjoy it, and maybe a few folk would read it but I genuinely did not expect it to get the love that it did. Modern au's don't tend to get the same response that other fics do in the fandom, so the fact many folk read this one and loved it so much to comment and tell me really touched me. The lesson learned here is always be self-indulgent with your writing and it will find the audience that will love it.

22. Do you know how your fic will end before you start writing?

When I initially start writing, I generally don't, but it's something that forms pretty quickly when I start actually giving attention to the story beyond a wouldn't it be cool if I wrote this thing? It's often not the whole ending, but I normally have a clear emotional point I want to get to, and sometimes it's a fully-formed scene. I knew very early on with the breath before the phrase that a music competition of some sort where Essek and Caleb performed together was going to be where it was all leading. Similar to sleep, with benefits, I knew there would be a public confession after an accidental "I love you" within the first two or three chapters. I didn't have full details of these moments, but enough that it let me write to them while still having the freedom to find exactly how it would play out.

17. Your favorite character to write this year?

Essek. *slaps essek's head* this wizard can hold so much trauma, touch starvation and gender. There's so much to explore in that tiny floating frame and I do so love putting him in situations and figuring out what he'd do, how he'd handle it. So much fun, so much to explore, Matt really made the most character with Essek and I'm thankful for that.

28. Favorite work you wrote this year?

Published work, has to be The edge of the blade, yes I technically finished writing it in 2022 buuuuttt it was tweaked and beta-ed for a 2023 release, its my baby and I loved writing it, its some of the most self indulgent things I've ever written, where else would I get sword fighting flirting, trans!Essek and dramatic declarations of love? If that's cheating then my last three sentence challenge which was Essek/Caleb/Kingsley with a King being the pirate king, the purple boys and their ginger man have taken over life in all forms and are invading many wip's I have on the go right now, I just love the dynamic of them so much.

Unpublished wip has to be the little angst fest that is titled aeor explorations...its wizard date time in the frozen north and things go wrong mwhahaha. It's almost done and I love the level of angst and pain and the feeeeelllliiinnngggss, *chef's kiss*

📑 Hardcover, paperback, ebook, or audiobook? Which format do you prefer?

My straightforward answer is that paperback is my favorite. But I like them all for their different strengths, and just as I pick what I read based mostly on mood, how I read it is also largely determined by mood. (audio is good for multitasking, ebooks for reading in the dark, i prefer physical library books...)

💙 What is your favorite book-to-movie adaptation, and why?

I have a solid shortlist but they're mostly escaping me at the moment. Which I suppose is fine, because my favorite is The Thief Lord (2006), originally by Cornelia Funke. I am entirely apathetic about the book but the movie, regardless of being an adaptation, is one of my favorite movies ever. idk what it is, but the movie has magic that the book was apparently lacking for me.

🧾 What is the most memorable book ending you’ve ever read? Did it leave you satisfied or wanting more?

One of those questions that make me forget everything I've ever read kljhg so going off what i've read in the last 3-ish years, and narrowed to JUST memorable endings – The Knockout Queen by Rufi Thorpe. I liked the book itself, just an emotional, literary early aughts-set YA. But when I finished it, I closed the book and suddenly started weeping. It was WILD. I did NOT want more. Honestly I wanted a little less, cuz it was just the timeskip epilogue that ruined me lkjhgf
