Overwatch OC Appreciation Day 3

This is Synthesis. He is an ex-Blackwatch agent and due to a failed experiment had his legs replaced with omnic parts. Even though he struggles due to this, he decides to become a rescue hero for the current omnic crisis and a supporter of the recall.

This was a very "trust the process" piece for me. I have wonderful high quality watercolours that i rarely use and honestly dont have much experience working with. But there is nothing coloured pencils cant fix. Proud of the end result!

Angela eased open the door to her quarters, a sense of relief loosening the tension in her shoulders. Late-evening light spilled in from the corridor, illuminating a tidy living space adorned with books on medical research, a small collection of succulents, and a curious addition she had picked up recently: a turntable.

She had found it by chance on a day trip into the nearby town—a vintage model with a dark wood base and a glass lid. Something about it had called to her, perhaps a desire to slow down and listen to music the old-fashioned way. It felt quaint and comforting compared to the sleek, digital hum that filled Overwatch’s labs.

Tucked beneath the turntable was a modest stack of records. Angela was no collector, but she had picked a few timeless pieces: classical symphonies, mellow jazz, the occasional modern arrangement. Whenever she had a rare moment to herself, she found solace in dropping the needle onto a spinning vinyl and letting music fill the silence.

Tonight, her solitude was interrupted by a quiet knock. She recognized the measured, deliberate way the knuckles rapped on the door—Moira. Angela’s heart gave a small flutter of curiosity. She and Moira had been working together intensely for days on end in the lab. Though they had come to a mutual respect, Moira did not often seek her out in non-work settings.

Angela opened the door to find Moira standing there, tall and reserved, a file tucked under her arm. “Dr. Ziegler,” she greeted, voice carefully neutral. “I have some notes from our last set of experiments. I thought we could review them… unless you’re otherwise occupied.”

Angela offered a friendly smile. “I was about to relax for the evening, actually. But I don’t mind looking over the data, if you’d like.” She stepped aside, allowing Moira to enter.

Moira’s sharp gaze flickered across the room, no doubt taking in every detail: the meticulously arranged books, the half-written post-it notes stuck to a whiteboard, and finally, the wooden turntable in the corner. She tilted her head, curiosity sparking in her eyes.

“A turntable?” she murmured. “That’s… unexpected.”

Angela’s smile grew softer as she approached the old-fashioned record player. “I found it last month. I’ve always loved music, but listening this way makes me feel more present—less caught up in all the digital noise that surrounds us.”

Moira set her file on Angela’s desk. “I can understand the sentiment,” she admitted. “Though vinyl is somewhat… antiquated.”

“Yes,” Angela said, flipping open the lid. “But it has a certain charm, doesn’t it?” She pressed a small button, and the turntable whirred to life, the platter spinning smoothly. “Care to choose an album?”

Moira hesitated, her mismatched eyes drifting over the small selection. She ran a careful finger across the spines, reading the titles quietly before stopping at one: a classical album by a composer she recognized. With a careful hand, she lifted the record and slid it from its sleeve.

“Mozart,” she said in a measured tone, as though confirming a piece of data. “Are you a fan?”

Angela shrugged, a slight blush coloring her cheeks. “I enjoy the structure. It helps me focus if I’m reviewing medical texts. Also helps me unwind.”

Moira placed the record on the spinning platter. Angela carefully lifted the tonearm and lowered the needle. A moment later, warm, crackling notes drifted through the speakers, filling the small quarters with melodic strings and soft harpsichord.

Angela moved to her desk, clearing a space so they could spread out Moira’s notes. “So, you said you had data you wanted me to see?”

Moira nodded and opened the file, her posture still slightly stiff, as though unsure of how to exist in this domestic calm. “I made some modifications to the protein synthesis procedure we discussed—doubling the sample rate might yield a more accurate baseline for regenerative capacity. But… I’d like your opinion.”

Angela scanned the printouts, occasionally glancing at Moira’s neat, precise handwriting. Even though they were in Angela’s cozy quarters with soft music playing, science remained their shared language. The tension in Moira’s posture seemed to ease whenever they delved into technical details.

Minutes passed in companionable quiet, interrupted only by the soft hiss and pop of the record. When Angela finished reading, she nodded approvingly. “These are good modifications. I think Winston will appreciate the thoroughness. And it might give us a clearer picture of how the cells respond in real-time.”

Moira exhaled, a satisfied curve at the corners of her lips—her version of a smile. “Excellent. I’ll run the changes first thing in the morning.”

They stood side by side, listening to the orchestral strains. The music wove a gentle tapestry around them, inviting a moment of reflection.

Angela closed the file and turned to Moira, a thoughtful look in her eyes. “You know,” she began quietly, “I’m glad you came by. It’s… nice to see you outside of the lab, even if we did end up talking about work.”

Moira glanced around the cozy space again. “It’s been some time since I’ve been in a room that wasn’t sterile or humming with equipment,” she admitted softly. “I’m not… used to it.”

Angela offered a gentle smile. “You might find it soothing. Music, a comfortable chair, a good book—or a good conversation—it all helps me remember there’s more to life than running experiments.”

Moira’s gaze flicked to the spinning record, the needle tracing the grooves with mechanical precision. “I’ve always leaned on my work. Perhaps it’s my way of maintaining control.” She paused, considering her next words carefully. “But… I’m open to the idea of trying new things.”

Angela felt her chest warm at that small show of vulnerability. She gestured to the turntable. “Would you like to pick another album when this one’s finished? I’ve got some jazz, or maybe a bit of mellow pop. Something to unwind to.”

Moira pursed her lips as though deliberating. “Jazz would suit my tastes,” she finally said.

Angela flashed her a bright smile. “Wonderful.”

Their conversation faded naturally, replaced by the crescendo of the symphony reaching its final movement. Angela and Moira let the music wash over them, standing in a comfortable silence that felt surprisingly intimate—two women whose lives revolved around science, now sharing a soft, analog moment in Angela’s quarters.

As the record ended and the needle lifted with a gentle click, Angela slid it back into its sleeve. She turned to find Moira quietly watching, her expression inquisitive but calm.

“Thank you,” Moira said, her voice low. “This was… a pleasant distraction.”

Angela’s eyes warmed. “You’re always welcome to drop by. Maybe next time, we’ll just listen to music—no files or data to worry about.”

Moira considered that, a tiny curve of a smile returning to her lips. “Yes,” she said at last, “I think I’d like that.”

They parted soon after, Moira carrying her file with the revised notes clutched to her chest. Angela stood in the doorway, watching her retreat down the hall. Before Moira disappeared, she paused and cast one last glance over her shoulder. In that brief moment, Angela could sense there were a thousand thoughts unspoken—gratitude, uncertainty, maybe even anticipation.

Then Moira turned away, footsteps echoing on the metal flooring. Angela closed her door gently, returning to the quiet hush of her quarters. She set a new vinyl on the turntable—some soft jazz—and let the saxophone’s melody wind through the air.

There was something wonderful, she realized, about the tangibility of a record, the way it filled the space with gentle sound, inviting her to slow down. She thought of Moira’s hesitant acceptance, the look in her eyes as she watched the record spin. Perhaps, Angela mused, there were other sides to Moira yet to be discovered—facets hidden away, just waiting for the right moment to surface.

With the music as her companion, Angela closed her eyes and allowed herself to hope that this evening marked the beginning of a friendship—or something more—that might develop in the unlikeliest of places: shared moments of stillness and the quiet crackle of a spinning vinyl record.

how’s synthesis’s relationship with everyone, including all heroes she canonically works with + heroes she doesnt?? also !! is she a fan of / related to lucio, considering her hero name?

This is gonna be a long post, so everything will be under the cut!!

However, I will politely correct one thing; Synthesis is male!! Uses he/him pronouns.

Anyway, onto how he feels towards every Overwatch hero that is currently out!!

Green means positive, Red means negative, and Purple means mixed!

Ana: "She's an amazing sniper! I didn't spend much time with her during my stay in Blackwatch, but I admire her greatly. If we ever cross paths, I hope we can talk a bit."

Ashe: "A known criminal isn't a friend of mine. I'd never condone her actions, but I don't wish anything more than for her to be brought to justice. Serve her time, and hopefully move on."

Baptiste: "He's a good guy! Extremely kind, charming, and funny. He's done some things he's not proud of...but so have I. Hopefully I can be like him someday, where I'm forgiven...mostly..."

Bastion: "While I was cautious of him when I first met him, I've learned better. He's a sweet guy, wouldn't hurt a fly...well, that's not exactly true, but you know what I mean."

Brigitte: "She's a good person...tries her best, does her job. We don't talk much, but I don't get the vibe that she hates me. Her dad scares me though."

Cassidy: "He left me for dead...but at least he was more reluctant to do so. Haven't seen him around much, so I can't say I forgive him just yet. It's...it's really complicated..."

D.VA: "She's cocky, but for good reason. She does her job well, even if it means risking her own life. Can't say I agree with how reckless she can be. Also she keeps beating me at video games..."

Doomfist: "He's part of Talon. There's not much good to be done from that organization. He'll face justice soon...hopefully."

Echo: "She's sweet. Curious, but not reckless. I don't see us having much in common, but she's a good ally. I wouldn't want her to copy me though..."

Genji: "Another old acquaintance who left me in my time of need...but he's definitely changed. He seems apologetic, but it's been too chaotic to get a verbal apology from him."

Hanzo: "I don't know much, other than he's related to Genji. If they're anything alike, I'd have some trouble getting along with him."

Hazard: "He's definitely..something. We have very different opinions on Overwatch...I don't know how close I could get to him."

Illari: "Poor girl...just..poor girl. She needs help, someone to guide her...but I'm in no position to offer that. Nor do I expect her to accept it..."

Junker Queen: "She scares me. I don't ever want to run into her without backup. She's got a wild look in her eyes..."

Junkrat: "A bomb-obsessed, compulsive liar with horrible posture...not to mention he has no clue when to shut up. I'd rather not be on his side."

Juno: "She's definitely naive, but can I blame her? No. If I was raised on a completely different planet, I'd find everything fascinating. She's sweet, though."

Kiriko: "She's fighting the good fight, but with not so good means...sounds familiar. But her snark could definitely be lowered. Tired of the sass.."

Lifeweaver: "He's doing what he can with his reputation...but I believe he's good. He's definitely charming, even if he doesn't realize it sometimes. I get flustered just thinking about him..."

Lúcio: "Funny, reliable, kind-hearted, protective...he's a great guy! He struggles, I know he does, but who doesn't nowadays? At least he's keeping a smile on everyone's face. Can't say I light up a room like he does."

Mauga: "Talon agent, cocky, and thinks he's a real heartthrob. I don't like him. At all."

Mei: "I feel so awful for her...how she stays so positive, I have no clue. I appreciate her, though. Very sweet, very thoughtful."

Mercy: "She saved my life. Without her, I'd be dead. She did everything she could to help me. I owe her big time..."

Moira: "She used me, lied to me, hurt me, and tried to leave me for dead. She made the call that left me suffering. I want nothing more than to pay her back for everything she put me through."

Orisa: "The defender of Numbani herself! She's a wonder. I am curious about her creator, though. I've heard she's really young...and if she is, she's a force to be reckoned with. Just like Orisa."

Pharah: "What Ana did to her sucks, but I have no right to comment on it. I did something similar to my own loved ones. Pharah is admirable. I don't know if she'd wanna talk though."

Ramattra: "He's the face of Null Sector right now. I don't know his point of view well, but I'd be willing to listen to his side...if he didn't, y'know, tear me apart first."

Reaper: "He didn't even try to help me. I guess everything else was overwhelming, but...to join Talon like he did is unacceptable. He needs to pay the consequences of his actions."

Reinhardt: "He's loud and tough for how old he is. But I'd be a goner without him nearby. He's saved me more times than I can count, and I hope I've done the same for him."

Roadhog: "He's a criminal...but that's about all I know about him. He's pretty quiet. It's uncomfortable.."

Sigma: "He's part of Talon, but...I don't think he realizes what he's doing. No doubt Moira is behind this...I wish there was a way to get him out of there."

Sojourn: "She's a good woman. Good morals, good skills...we didn't talk back in the day, but she's a hero in my eyes."

Soldier 76: "We pulled the same stunt, somewhat. Not really dying, going rogue with a new name...but I'm at least not hiding from my past."

Sombra: "She is terrifying. She knows everything about me, and could blackmail me at any time. She holds so much power, but uses it for Talon..."

Symmetra: "From what I know, Vishkar isn't the best...it's definitely something I wouldn't be apart of. I don't exactly know her stance on them, but she's got better places to go."

Torbjörn: "He's great at what he does, but his temper is crazy. I swear, he'd hit me with that hammer of his if he could reach me."

Tracer: "She's a strong woman...even with her regrets, she makes sure to keep positive. I wish I could do that."

Venture: "They're a goofball, but in a good way. Hopefully I can get closer with them. They seem nice."

Widowmaker: "She's cold blooded. Moira got her hands on her, and there's nothing I can do to help. I have to help take her down, for her sake and everyone else's."

Winston: "He's a big reason I'm able to get my second chance...without that recall, I'd still be wallowing in my regrets and mistakes. I owe him."

Wrecking Ball: "He gets on my nerves, but I guess he's alright. Again, with these cocky allies..."

Zarya: "She and I view omnics very differently. I hope she learns to think differently, but I know I can't change her mind on my own."

Zenyatta: "He definitely is wise. He has a lot of great advice, and many times knows exactly what to say when I'm in my own head. I heard he helped Genji too..."

How did Synthesis get involved with Blackwatch and the regeneration experiments?

Hello!! Sorry for the long wait on this, I had to think on it and I was busy-

He went scouring the darker walk of life, and was given information about Moira's work. He confronted her personally, offering to do anything for her help.

Seeing a willing patient, she was able to get him into Blackwatch as more healing power while using him as a test subject.

He originally had very weak legs, to the point of using wheelchairs and arm crutches for support. After the experiments, he had more strength, but it all backfired and began to rapidly rot during a mission.

Luckily, he was found by Overwatch after Blackwatch had to leave him behind, but his legs weren't salvageable. Now he has omnic prosthetics!

He feels he's "back at square one" now, considering he has phantom limb pains and off days where he doesn't have the strength to move too much.

I rambled a little but I really love Synthesis.

Also, if anyone who experiences phantom pains/chronic limb pains/etc. has any information they'd be willing to share about it, I'm all ears! I personally am not disabled like Synthesis, so anything to help me properly represent through him is always accepted!!

Is Synthesis friends with any other OW agents?

Synthesis isn't particularly friendly anymore, but he's acquainted with the current Overwatch revival team, especially Cassidy and Genji since they were on Blackwatch together! Though they're all in an awkward situation considering the circumstances...

He would say no, he has no time for hobbies, but he does spend his downtime sketching and working on his legs!
