Im so sick of north americans claiming all the time to be so inclusive and respectful to other cultures when in reality they're the most ignorant and self-centered people in the world.
Especially now that apparently being a "latino" seems to be just a trend.
And guess what! Disney took the opportunity to start releasing content from its new series, based on Latin America's (actually just Mexico, because for people in the US it is very difficult to understand that there are many countries besides Mexico in Latin America) culture, "Primos".
Created, directed, written by: people who know nothing about Latin America.
I am not going to dwell on the number of errors that JUST the opening song already has because the internet is already full of information about it.
But I do want to dwell on how part of the team behind this series is defending itself against the accusations of how racist their show is.
Myrna Velasco, who voices the main character in the series, recently posted a video on her ig stories making the following statement with an air of superiority in her voice:
"The Spanish language its not a Latin American language. Its a language that Spanish conquistadors forced upon latin american people (etc etc)"
(all of this happened because someone corrected a grammatically wrong sentence that she said in Spanish)
1- By that criteria, English is not a North American language.
2- Spanish has been spoken in Latin America for centuries. Whether you like it or not, that language (in all its shapes and colors, because the same Spanish is not spoken in Mexico as in Argentina as in Peru, etc.) is already part of our culture.
3- You dont like Spanish because its not native? ok then do it in Guarani, Quechua, Aimara, Nahuatl, etc
4- Why you can go speaking a very broken Spanish and get away with it but every time a Spanish speaker, after actually taking the time to learn your language (because it is impossible to communicate with you in any other way), is mocked and mistreated BY YOU for their accent even though they are forming grammatically perfect sentences??? (this goes to the majority of US population)
5- This woman claims to love Latin American culture but posts things like this one:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in conclusion, stop being so hypocritical and learn to look at what happens outside the United States, the rest of the world does not work the same way your country does or how your country thinks it works.
thanks for coming to my ted talk, I needed to get it off my chest.
chau

disney todavía no dice nada sobre la crítica que recibió "primos", propongo que disney latino plantee una serie en EEUU donde la escuela del pueblo se llame "shooting"

That a person that dosent speak spanish tries to correct us, latinoamericanos, over a grammatical error is unreal. Disney stop greenlighting these type of projects. Maybe it was enough in 2010 but not now.

Regarding “¡Oye! ¡Primos!”
As a Mexican, yes, my first gripe with the show was the terrible title used. And in second place, the horrible, horrible artstyle.
The main idea of a group of cousins in the house? Yes, it’s relatable, you can have things like that happen with some sides of the family, so that one was a good choice.
“Terremoto” being the name of the town was... a very weird choice. It’s not really racist as much as eyebrow-rising, since it takes place in Los Angeles, but still...
And the names of the characters, despite some of them being dumb, they aren’t really inaccurate. “Cuquita” can be used to call a cockroach, yes, but it’s also an existing nickname. “Gordita” is again, accurate, if questionable to use. Maybe the joke is that the girl is actually slim? Or it has to do with the food named Gordita?
Also “Nacho” and “Nachito”. Real way to call someone named “Ignacio”. Having two characters with the same name seems creatively dumb, but maybe there’s an in-universe reason?
Really, if Disney would have kept their mouths shut and didn’t respond to criticism with idiocy like “Well, language is fluid!” or “This is attacking diaspora!” then the vitriol wouldn’t be so high. At most, it seemed very “meh”. I would give it the benefit of the doubt.
Would. Until I saw things like this shit:

Yeah, the moment you use the word “Latinx”, you immediately made yourself an enemy out of the vast majority of the latin american community.
Including me.

A la mierda con esto. Voy a ver Mucha Lucha.

I'm glad Primos got postponed again. I hate how stupid the VA of the mc was. On top of that, why is disney scared of POC that don't have a white parent? I noticed most of their shit has a POC parent married to a white parent. The only ones that didn't have that shit were stuff like Amphibia, Encanto, and Turning Red, stuff written by POC.
I hope it doesn't get a season 2 since people, as in the ones working on the show, were shitty to people that were offended by the theme song. I didn't even care about the bad grammar, I think all the characters have an ugly design, their names are stupid, and of course we need a white parent married to another POC parent.
I rather Hazbin not have anything take away it's criticism.
Same. Vivzie's too awful to have anything distract from her show and Primos is too awful to have Hazbin taking away from the fact that the baby's name is vagina.

If the mayority of latinos in the internet is calling something racist out, don't you think it's better if you just shut up and let us called the shit out? Especially if you are not latino or don't even speak the language? You don't know the stereotypes and neither how it can affect to the view of the others so stfu

La serie "Primos" de Disney es un friendly reminder de que los latinoamericanos nacidos y criados en Estados Unidos también son gringos.

I do think you should know the creator of Oye Primos is a Latina woman who made the show based on her childhood of growing up in LA, where the show takes place. This obviously doesn't justify a number of things seen in the opening but I think it does explain some choices
I literally grew up in LA and personally have family that lives in various parts of Mexico so idk that's not really an excuse to me skfdkfnf like I'm sure she created it but, like every single show that exists that is owned by Disney, there are choices made that I'm sure were beyond her control and that whole opener that is supposed to give you an idea of what the show is being THAT?? not a good look.
that opener looks so incredibly racist and leaves a bad taste in the mouth. like ok there is a difference between joking about some of the stuff one might have seen/experienced when growing up and legit making a show that actively looks like it's leaning into fucked up stereotypes. now obviously the show has not aired yet so there is no way to judge it fully until it's out but just based on that opener? it looks like someone asked a bunch of white folks who travel down to Cancun on occasion to make a show about a Hispanic family. especially when you have shows that have been crafted that are centered around POC families that prove you uhhhh don't have to do the whole "dirty Latin family with a shitton of kids in a shitty house that's filthy living in a city that's swamped with pollution and overcrowded and filled with packs of dogs"
like do you know how diverse and beautiful Latin America is? even major cities! there is so much rich beauty there and THATS the angle they hit IN THEIR OPENER???? real disappointed is all I'm sayin

every time I hear about the oye primos trailer that came out i actually lose my mind, simply because it was so much easier just not to be stereotypical towards Latinos and latinas but they just had to put the breaking bad yellow filter on it, didn't they. they named two of the characters nacho. the place where they live is called terremoto heights. the name of the show is grammatically incorrect.
regardless of the creator's nationality, disrespecting other groups like this and then arguing that there is no better representation out there reeks of bullshit to me
(good vidya that explains the whole thing better than me: https://youtu.be/qH3wPQRwyhs)
