Naoto Shirogane from Persona 4

Reasoning:

i am actually literally shocked no one's sent him in yet naoto is like THE transmasc argument-starter. he literally says he wishes he was born a man, he only walks back on his shadow also claiming he wishes to be a man when SOMEBODY ELSE PROMPTS HIM, and just in general he's incredibly uncomfortable being seen as a woman, wearing feminine clothing, etc. transitioning not only would have saved him in a meta sense (from having maybe the worst written subplot in a persona game), it would have been exactly what his shadow (his suppressed inner thoughts he doesn't want to admit to) wants, so it would be saving him within the context of the game too, and setting him more on the same level as everybody else who admitted to their shadows representing thoughts they did have. (except kanji, but he has his own issues writing-wise)

The thing about Naoto is that the plot of P4 opens with introducing Naoto as a man. He is referred to as a man by others, refers to himself as one, and wants to act and be seen as a man. Later in the game it is revealed that he is "actually" a woman who binds, and was "only acting like a man" in order to be taken seriously as a detective. This reveal happens via a representation of his innermost self, like his soul, talking about how the effort is useless and he would be better off submitting to a "surgery" to "fix" him. After this reveal, Naoto is referred to with feminine terms and wears more "feminine" clothing. He is also implied to be in a relationship with a previously introduced character who up until that point had very clearly and explicitly been gay, but who is still interested in Naoto after he "returns to being a woman". Surely you and I both understand that he is an incredibly unfotunately written transmasc character. A lot of people in fandom see him as transfeminine which I respect the grind for but I simply don't think it's true. He has always been a man to me ever since I was a little girl who wanted to grow up to be a man

May I please request headcanons for Naoto, Kanji, and Rise reacting to their American female S/O telling them about her past before moving to Inaba and the things she's seen which has caused her to become desensitized and cynical?

Naoto, Kanji, & Rise with a American female S/O having a dark past

Warnings: mentions of gangs and criminal activity, mentions of food, possible character ooc.

Story type: Fluff, angst, comfort.

Pairings/Characters: Naoto Shirogane, Rise Kujikawa, Kanji Tatsumi

Kanji

Though Kanji has a affiliation with taking down biker gangs, he's never had to deal with things on your level. He's seen some messed up stuff and criminal activity in the gangs that he's taken down but he still feels the pain and suffering you've went through.

He heavily sympathizes with you and wants to help you heal from the tragic and traumatic events that happened to you, but doesn't exactly know how to approach helping you.

The most he does is silently listen at first, hoping that at least listening would help take some weight off of your shoulders. Comforting in a normal way isn't really his forte. The thing he will let you do is ramble away about your sorrows.

"I'll be straightforward.. i'm not good at comforting. But, please share your worries with me." He would say as he put his hand on your shoulder, trying his best to show his comfort and concern through his words and actions. Even if he's not good at it.

After letting you let all your worries and pain out, he'll put his good cooking and knitting skills to use. He'll ask you about your comfort foods, make you some tea, and put a blanket over you. Asking you to wait for him for a small amount of time.

Eventually, he comes back with some icecream and some other foods that he thought would be able to comfort you. Along with carrying a small knitted hat. Saying "I'll always be there for you, don't forget that." as he sat down next to you on a couch.

Naoto

Due to her status as a detective even at a young age, Naoto has seen her fair share of troubling things. She's solved many crimes and has seen a lot, but has never lost her sympathy for those horribly affected.

Naoto stays absolutely completely silent while you explain, thoughts racing back and fourth in her head. Now everything made sense to her, why you acted the way you did, and so many more tiny traits she picked up on.

When you're done explaining, no matter if you're straight faced or crying, naoto will gently start rubbing your back. Trying to comfort you in the best way she can. Though she's no good with either words nor physical comfort, she'll be trying her best to help you.

Naoto will sit down with you for hours, letting you vent, rant, and let out anything you need to let out emotionally. Not interrupting you at all, not even to ask any questions she has. Completely prioritizing your feelings and emotions.

After you're done explaining everything, naoto immediately asks you if you need anything. Food, blankets, if you want her to run you a bath, tea, absolutely anything she can do for you, she will do.

"is there anything else you want to talk about? Remember, i'm right here." Naoto would say as she would put a fluffy blanket over your shoulder, ready to stay by your side through anything.

Rise

Living most of her life as an idol and having practically no exposure to any of the crime world unlike the other two, Rise is the most sensitive compared to Naoto and Kanji. She won't exactly know what to say or do at first, for awhile just listening in shock to your explanations.

By the end of your explanations, tears are pouring down rises face as she would rush over and hug you into her arms. Embracing you tightly and basically almost suffocating you.

For as long as it took for the both of you to start calming down more, she continued hugging you, letting you hug back as tightly as you want. If you wanted to hide your face until you stopped crying, that's fine. Just know she's here, she's not leaving.

"I'm so sorry you had to go through that, I'm so so sorry." Rise would said as she wiped her tears, then went to wipe yours. Muttering that you shouldn't ever had to go through that.

Whenever you two are more calmed down, Rise will suggest things that will take both of your minds off of it. Like singing, video games, manga, etc. Activities you two wouldn't mind doing together.

If you still want to talk about it though, Rise will nod and let you continue on talking. No matter what suffering you say you've gone through, and no matter what emotions you and Rise struggle through, you two will get through this together.

Trans Masc Naoto Shirogane (my take)

Hi I’m finally getting around to finishing persona 4 golden and I need people to understand that I love Naoto so much. (my multi fandom is showing)

I also need people to understand that while yes, the game states that Naoto isn’t trans and is content with being a girl, Naoto’s story still resonates with trans people and arguably makes more sense if he were trans.

Naoto isn’t trans in canon, but there’s substantial evidence for people to see him as such.

So I’m gonna rant abt it a little

- “Seeing Naoto as trans is MORE harmful than Naoto being a girl”

The point being brought up here is that those who hc Naoto as trans are forcing this identity on him, just as transphobic people do onto others.

The main flaw with this is that Naoto isn’t a real person. No one is “forcing” a gender identity because they can’t. They’re not real. This would only be valid if in canon there was a character who forced Naoto to present as male, but there isn’t.

- “Saying Naoto is trans is like saying Mulan is trans”

Mulan dressed up as a man to protect her father, a clear reaction to the situation at hand. Naoto chooses to present as male in every aspect of his life ever since he was young. Naoto’s mother was a renowned detective as well, it doesn’t make a lot of sense for Naoto to be completely convinced he has to be a man in order to be a detective.

- The workplace sexism topic isn’t handled well

While I won’t deny that sexism in the workplace is a problem, the game barely highlights this. The only part we see of Naoto being discriminated against is because he’s young. The game tries to explain an issue that it never shows, there’s no evidence to the audience that Naoto would’ve been treated any differently had he present as female.

Naoto’s family is also said to be a long line of renowned detectives, some of which have had to be female.

Naoto’s shadow talks about how he’s lonely and just a child. He also says that he’ll “never cross the line between the two sexes” the shadows say the fears and inner thoughts of a person.

If Naoto’s story had been more focused on workplace discrimination, his shadow would’ve said something like “I don’t want to be a boy” implying that his expression as a boy is unwanted but forced because of workplace discrimination.

It isn’t though, it focuses on Naoto’s insecurities about never being able to change the fact he was born a woman, something that’s very similar to the trans experience.

- Naoto’s character arc is based around self acceptance, this can work for the trans hc and canon

While in the game it’s displayed as Naoto coming to terms that he doesn’t need to be a boy, and it’s okay for him to be a girl regardless of his occupation, this can work just as well (if not more) for the trans hc.

Naoto’s self acceptance can be presented as “I don’t have to medically transition/be born a boy in order to be a boy”

This could also explain Naoto’s apparent fear about gender reassignment surgery with how it’s presented with his shadow.

- “Naoto being trans would be sending the message that you can just transition to avoid systemic discrimination”

Crazily enough, trans people also face discrimination in the workplace. And this is also assuming Naoto’s arc would be about a character transitioning for convenience when obviously there’s a lot more to that to transitioning.

- Naoto doesn’t mind when people see him as a boy, even when in canon he identifies as a woman

This implies some kind of non-negative view of him being a boy, this implies that he doesn’t just do it to be not discriminated in the workplace, it’s part of him and his identity.

edit: I think it’s important to point out that it’s not wrong to perceive Naoto as a woman, as that’s what the persona 4 canon is, but the point is to rather justify the interpretations of Naoto as a transman and debunk common statements made against the hc
