spoilers for pacific rim: uprising, character death mentions
I feel like the two major deaths were rather unnecessary.. Mako Mori dies so early on that we hardly know anything abt her??? And Cadet Suresh (like.. the cadets are older teenagers at most too..) too??

PACIFIC RIM 3? ORIGINAL STAR SAYS HE'D RETURN — ON ONE BIG CONDITION
The Pacific Rim star couldn’t appear in Uprising, but he’s down for more monster-fighting action.
BY
LYVIE SCOTT
Pacific Rim may have garnered a cult following in the decade since its theatrical release, but the struggles of its sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, kept the fledgling franchise from reaching new heights.
Director Guillermo Del Toro was clearly passionate about building out his “giant robots fight giant kaiju” world, having planned a second and third Pacific Rim film just a year after the original’s unprecedented success abroad. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t to be: the director moved on to The Shape of Water and was replaced by Daredevil’s Steven DeKnight. A handful of cast members would return for Uprising, but OG star Charlie Hunnam wasn’t among them.
Hunnam played Jaeger pilot Raleigh Beckett in Del Toro’s 2013 film. He survives the events of Pacific Rim, along with co-pilot Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), but Mako reprises their role in Uprising while Raleigh scarcely gets a mention. The actor told Collider he’d been “part of the conversation” when Del Toro was still building out the films. “I think that his vision for it included me. But by the time they circled around and decided that they were gonna make it with a different director, we had a conversation about it, but I was booked up.”
Uprising didn’t exactly ruin the franchise — the battle between Jaeger and kaiju continued in the Netflix anime Pacific Rim: The Black — but it did, at least, seem to be the end for Hunnam. “When I didn’t do the sequel, I think that probably closed that chapter for me,” the actor said in 2020. Three years later, though, there’s still a slim chance for Hunnam’s return... but only if Del Toro is also on board for a sequel.
There aren’t any current plans for a Pacific Rim 3, but if the franchise’s original steward were to come back for it, then Hunnam would return without question. “I would do anything that Guillermo was doing,” the actor told Inverse while promoting Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. “If Guillermo invites me to do Pacific Rim 3, I’ll be there. Or anything else he wants to do.”
Del Toro is currently working on his adaptation of Frankenstein, and hasn’t expressed much interest in revisiting the Pac-Rim world. He stated he had “no plans” to return in 2021, and still has yet to catch the sequel, likening it to the idea of “watching home movies from your ex-wife.” Of course, plans are always subject to change. Pacific Rim 3 could still technically happen one day, and if it does, we at least know its leading man is already locked in.
If this pans out no one will remember PR2 and maybe they can bring Mako back somehow...

people can’t mention pac rim uprising because then I want to watch it again. not because it’s good (it is not) but because I spent months rewatching that movie when it came out to try to understand what the fuck it is and I never did but maybe if I rewatch it ONE MORE TIME

It is my strong belief that it was del Toro's vision that made the first movie so very good, and without him at the helm, any Pac-Rim sequels will pale in comparison. Not even bringing back the stars from the original will work - not least because Rinko Kikuchi's character was killed early in the second one, and Idris Elba's character was killed in the first. Charlie Hunnam did a great job bringing his character to life in the first movie, but that was because his performance was juxtaposed against the performances of the rest of the cast, especially Kikuchi's.
Still, if del Toro does decide to come back for more Pac-Rim movies, I have full faith that he will do an incredible job with the actors who sign up. I certainly hope, at least, that he'll pick up John Boyega and bring him in; Boyega did what he could with what he was given, but it's quite clear that his character had so much more potential.

How deep into pac rim lore are you? I just watched pac rim uprising on a plane and started to wonder how much info is out there about the universe to explore, and how that informs your fic
Also I realized that the main song’s electro-guitar-riff-whatever is super cool, if only there was a way to randomly insert it into the fic at the start of action scenes haha
i definitely did a fair amount of research and have watched the OG movie 7238572846 times. i tend to ignore uprising bc i hated it lol. and i used the lore as a springboard…i would say most of the drift mechanics comes directly from the source material though

Nearly 3 years go, over 50 artists came together to create a 78-card tarot deck and a paired 20,000+ word handbook based off the 2013 Pacific Rim. Together, we compiled an Arcana, raised nearly twice our goal on Kickstarter, and fulfilled over 400 orders, all while making a beautifully coherent tarot and donating over $1,000 to various non-profits over time.
Now, in 2018, we’re doing it again- diving back into that world with Pacific Arcana: Tumultus- a full 78-card deck based off Pacific Rim Uprising and paired handbook.

just saw pac rim uprising! it honestly reminded me I gotta dig out my sw:tlj notes bc both of them do interesting (though idk if fully intentional?) things abt generational interpretations & impacts of war, though in ofc very different ways, especially considering both films' predecessors (pac rim 1 + the sw ot) are sort of fantasy proxy ww2 films in some ways
john boyega was really good & I'm happy it did not go the way I was hoping it wouldn't (stereotypical "dragon lady" yellow peril + AI stock plots for the antagonists), and for all the film's hiccups, narratively speaking I am not mad at the way the antagonists' plot did go. #unbopular onions but whatever!!
imo it didn't have a lot of the heart of the first film, though damned if boyega didn't almost single-handedly drag it as far as it was gonna go— he does a lot of the emotional heavy lifting of the plot, which is to be expected, particularly since a lot of other cast members' youth & inexperience really showed (nothing against them, child & teen actors are just like that s/t and it's a risk when people are still that wet behind the ears)— though I wish the production team had sprung for djawadi on the soundtrack again.
that said, the worldbuilding has just as much rich potential as the first movie, and it made me miss writing my hacker rp character (aria, who I literally had to change details on once the first pac rim came out, bc she was too similar to tendo choi) & rping as fem!tendo a lot. which is a really good & cool thing.
I'll get into it more once I'm on my computer, bc typing on mobile is ass, but yeah; I'm overdue to write up like meta analyses on both franchises again anyway. :)

ive already shared this with a few people but i just need to share with everyone that there is a slight possibility that the reason the fucking trololol dude moment happened is because:
the earliest millennial was 1981, if they had a child at 20 (which was the age my own mother had my sister) that would be 2001, if that child had their own child at 20 that would be 2021. amara in pr uprising was born in 2020 which means when that russian kid said that his grandmother played him the trololol dude it could be because his grandmother was a fucking millennial
and i hold out that that kid has no idea it was a fucking meme, it’s grandma’s long con cause id do the same fucking thing

Newmann fandom, I love you
(The last one is an AU based on Be More Chill the musical in which the precursors take the look of one of Newton’s idols Iggy Pop to gain his trust and eventually take control under the pretense on guidance. For reference I would recommend this animatic)

Got commissioned on Twitter to draw this very tender and “plausibly deniable” forehead smooch between the only m/m ship from 2013 I still care about. She said I could post it.
