spoilers for pacific rim: uprising, character death mentions
I feel like the two major deaths were rather unnecessary.. Mako Mori dies so early on that we hardly know anything abt her??? And Cadet Suresh (like.. the cadets are older teenagers at most too..) too??

Okay, so I rewatched PR:U for the first time since its release, and I definitely had some thoughts.
To begin with, what is with the really bizarre product placement in the beginning. Jake did not need to hold up those Oreos so blatantly lmao.
PR:U jumps straight into the action in a really identifiably different way than Pacific Rim does. In PR, Raleigh narrates the Kaiju War and then we see him and Yancy get into the Knifehead fight, and it flows really well overall. On the other hand, PR:U starts with a quick relay of the Kaiju War, and then we're introduced to Jake in the regions still affected by past Kaiju attacks (i.e. half-destroyed mansion, which I also have some thoughts on). So it quickly becomes clear he's got some black market dealings going on, and the first action sequence of the movie is Jake running from these random Jaeger scrappers (??). It's just really throwing compared to the first one, since we at least have a general idea of what's going on with Raleigh.
Side note: I'm assuming they're in the Bay Area that was largely evacuated considering they head toward a Jaeger scrapyard, so how does that mansion have like...any utilities.
So then we're introduced to Amara, who can build a sickass Jaeger but has no security system? I don't know, she seems really careful about being discovered for obvious reasons, so I feel her hideout would at least have an alarm or some kind of traps, But Jake essentially just strolls in.
Of course, then we have November Ajax vs. Scrapper, which I actually do like. Its nice to see what the new Jaegers look like, and see what Scrapper, the first single-pilot Jaeger, is capable of. This scene also really seals the tone of PR:U as kind of lighthearted and jokey while also having action and death, which isn't really the case in Pacific Rim.
Another thing I like: Amara and Jake's relationship. A lot of things about this movie feel funky, but I think the actors did a very good job of forming a very genuine-feeling bond between these two characters.
Mako's introduction just feels. very bizarre. I understand that she obviously can't be there in person, thus the hologram, but the whole situation just has a weird vibe that I can't place. I'm not sure if it's because Jake and Mako act so familiar with each other even though Jake was never mentioned in the movie, or because I'm just not a fan of the hologram bit.
Contrary to popular opinion (at least what I've seen), I really like the Jaegers in PR:U. I hate that they removed the realism from their movements that was always present in the first, but there were some very interesting weapons and new designs introduced at the same time, so I can let it slide. Except the giant rotating ball of blades on Bracer Phoenix, it can go die.
Mako's death is genuinely my least favorite scene in the movie for obvious reasons. She was essentially killed off for no reason, since we don't see much of Jake's grief, meaning they wrote her off for pointless plot purposes, which I hate.
I do enjoy the villain bait with Liwen, although it's a shame Newton ended up being the villain. They were definitely setting her up as an antagonist since she was on a side somewhat opposite to Mako's, and because it becomes clear that Shao Industries is somehow evil before having her turn around and attempt to stop Newton no matter the force necessary.
While on women in the movie, not a huge fan of how Jules was treated, but she's also not present that much so I won't go on and on about female characters being used a tool to create tension being male characters blah blah.
The fight against the Mega-Kaiju was...something. Suresh dying was completely out of the blue, and I hated it. I think the cadets all being so young is an odd decision to make, especially because in the first movie most of the Jaeger pilots come into the program in their very late teenage years at the least (besides Chuck and Raleigh, iirc). They try to justify the whole. child soldier-esque training by saying the Bond is stronger at a young age, but they didn't even have that young of recruits in the first PR and that was during a war so idk.
Raleigh not being mentioned at all is also a crime btw. Or Herc, for that matter, but he could at least make a little more justifiable sense than Raleigh.
Anyway, this was a really scattered collection of musings on the movie, but there we go.

Pacific Rim
I can’t believe in the year 2018 I got fucking trolled by Guillermo del Toro. WHAT THE HECK DUDE IM GONNA HAVE THAT SONG IN MY HEAD FOR HOURS.
Overview: Really good! Super enjoyable, and definitely a movie I’ll want to watch again to just have a good time. Total popcorn flick, through and through, with some twists I admit I did not see coming. Only once I left the theater did I notice some things that may not have come together.
Main Character: I love John Boyega, there’s no question about it. Now, this is a protagonist we’ve....a little bit seen before, from the Dad issues, to the ex-in-the-force or whatever, but he left, and is now brought reluctantly back into the fold and heck, the protag of the last one had some of these. It was brother issues, not Dad, but still. All these cliches aren’t bad when it’s played well, though, and it is on a character level. I enjoyed him and his journey to live up to his Dad, his Sister, and be more than a hero: Be a Leader.
Side Characters: Amara was a wonderful teen hero I loved her and her attitude dearly. She played off Boyega beautifully, and I loved it. Nate was another good foil for Boyega, but I don’t...I didn’t get to see much of his own character separate of that foil, the man Jake could be.
Herman Gottlieb was adorable, I liked him way more than in the first movie (sorry first movie Herman). And Newt!!! (okay seriously this is a big spoiler if you’re reading without seeing) I NEVER saw or considered that he’d been essentially possessed by the aliens! or precursors, whatever. That....that was well set up, that shocked me. Part of that was playing off our expectations with Shao! Who I loved incredibly once I found out about her, just...well done all around.
Other Characters: Mako!!!!! :( I loved her so much, but it made sense and. And.  :(. Reyes had no character but to be a love interest and she wasn’t even really that? I mean I have my own theories, but we’ll get to that in the next section. The only ones I really remember of the Teenage Crew were Viktoria, Jinhai, and Suresh. Poor Suresh :(. But they were fun and I’m ready for the tv show starring these kids.
Plot: Yeah...this is where it falls apart a bit. Cause. Like. Why did Mako know about the island where Obsidian Fury would be? Why did she...draw it? instead of just writing out the word? Maybe I need to watch that again to find out. but. Oh, also, as interesting and important as it was, I don’t see them just...recruiting Jake and Amara for stealing, I really don’t. And shouldn’t there be....more cadets? more pilots? more...something? Hell, if the war ended 10 years ago, why do they even still keep Jaegers around? and why would they need the drones? I’ve mentioned some of the twists were cool, and there were moments I honestly thought they were going to die, but. Someone get the pope cause it’s hole-y in here. Also WAY too much exposition at the beginning, or rather, not well written exposition.
Story: The story for me is that of Jake re-finding his family, and more than that, starting his own. He lost his father, first emotionally, then for real, then his older sister, but he ends up stepping in and becoming an older brother figure to Amara, and more than that, a leader of a teenage rebellion. So, that was great. lovin that found family stuff.
Writing/Editing: I already admitted that the beginning was exposition filled. If you haven’t seen the first one, no worries, they explain it right to you. but once it gets up and running, man does it run. Some cliched lines but they know they’re cliched and they go with it. Maybe a bit of emphasis on the last movie, but, hey, its a lot, so makes sense.
Cinnamontography: <--I like the word get used to it. ANYWAY I love del Toro’s style. I love the color. I love the visuals. There were a few times where I think it was a bit in love with the visuals when I was ready to move on with the plot, but meh.
Design:I mean the robots/mechs/jaegers we basically saw in the last one, but it was nice to have them highlighted. Also the three-part Kaiju I mean. I mean DAMN. I wish the Ranger uniforms weren’t in two models “Adult” and “teen” but work with what we got I suppose. I mean a lot of the designs were reused from 1, so. Hm.
Other: ANYONE ELSE FEELING THE SHIPPING?! Like, Jake/Nate, or Jake/Nate/Reyes? Amara/Viktoria or Amara/Viktoria/Jinhai? And, of course, Tragicly angsty Hermann/Newton. Ahhh it makes me want to reconnect with someone I haven’t talked to in a while just to hear their thoughts but there’s no way in hell I’m doing that.

Newt is sitting on the tabletop, surrounded by the teen rangers. Both his sleeves and pant legs are rolled up as high as they can go. "And this one is obviously Onibaba. I've got Otachi on the back of my upper thigh here, but that one's for my fiancé's eyes only."
Amara squints at Trespasser. "Which one hurt the worst?"
"Hmm," Newt thinks aloud, "Underarms really sucked. So did the back of my knees and my spine. Actually, the spine sucked more because I was in the chair for eight hours and I couldn't sleep comfortably for like, a month."
"So why... why the kaiju?" asks Suresh, and they all go quiet.

Spoilers ahead, I guess
I don't know why everyone seems to be hating Pacific Rim: The Uprising...Even before going to the cinema to watch it, there were so many bad comments about it. But I wasn't disappointed at all.
Yes, Mako Mori died but so did Cadet Suresh. Deaths are inevitable in a world like that and they help develop the plot. Jake was the main focus of this part, how he wanted to make his father proud that he's finally able to do what he did to save the world.
Anyway, I just loved it. Let me enjoy my giant robots fighting in a 4DX 3D cinema.

ABB when will we have the play by play breakdown of the Uprising trailer? I am dying to know what you think
I’m seldom much for verbiage when happenings this big hit the kaiju fandom – everyone has a take and I worry about my voice being indistinguishable from the rest. But since you asked: I present a ton of screencaps and speculation under the cut. Aside from what’s been discussed on here and my Discord groups, I don’t really know what other close looks have been like, so some of this may be a rehash.
Also, I’m going to have to make a second post, because if I try to fit everything onto this one, I think Firefox might actually explode.
Tumblr media
Poughkeepsie Avenger (that’s what I’m calling it now and forever, sorry) and an unidentified green Jaeger with a morning star are stuck in their hangers. I say “unidentified” because blueprints and toys show Titan Redeemer with the morning star, while the SDCC footage and trailer give it to Bracer Phoenix. Since both mechs are international efforts, rather than built by individual countries like the original Jaegers, perhaps the weapon can be easily switched out. Either way, the lack of Titan Redeemer in this trailer bodes ill for it.
Tumblr media
One of the Jaeger-Kaiju hybrids (which I have no choice but to call Mass Production Jaegers for now) swats a helicopter. I imagine this is an attack that will take out most of the PPDC’s trained pilots, forcing the cadets to fill their Drivesuits as kaiju descend on Tokyo.
Tumblr media
The legs of a mysterious Jaeger. We have toy photos of six Jaegers so far, and none of them match the gold-and-silver scheme here. I thought this left only the one with the Kamen Rider eyes in the SDCC promo, but upon closer inspection, some of the other Jaegers in that promo are slightly different from the ones we’ve seen as well. It does make sense that there would be a lot of Jaegers at humanity’s disposal: during the height of the first war, there were eight Shatterdomes, each fielding multiple Jaegers.
Tumblr media
A kaiju corpse in California that, like Reckoner in Hong Kong, was left to rot. I’m very intrigued by the promise of class divisions having a more prominent role in Uprising. The idea that the rich started stalling for time in Pacific Rim so they could live out their lives in peace (and to hell with everyone else) was a fascinating one, but mentioned only in passing. What does that neglect look like on the ground? To Jake, I imagine it feels a lot like Stacker’s neglect.
Tumblr media
A burrowing kaiju shows up in Tokyo. Seems to be different from the four others who appear later in the trailer.
Tumblr media
Jake and Amara enter a Shatterdome, with Bracer Phoenix front and center.
Tumblr media
Saber Athena, Guardian Bravo, Bracer Phoenix, and Poughkeepsie Avenger prepare to blast off. The rocket packs are probably swifter replacements for the Very Strong Helicopters which carried the Jaegers into battle in the first movie.
Tumblr media
Cherno Alpha blueprints on Jake’s right!
Tumblr media
A better look at the Mass Production Jaegers. Multiple eyes and plenty of bio-luminescence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I imagine this is the end for Marshal Quan (Zhang Jin), but it’s possible he’s saved at the last second and this is just deceptive trailer editing. I nominate Mako Mori as his replacement either way.
Tumblr media
Jake and some non-PPDC types under a Jaeger arm – likely one that fell defending California.
Tumblr media
There are at least four Mass Production Jaegers (the last is just visible behind the one closest to the camera). Quadruple event!
Tumblr media
Liwen Shao (Legendary Pictures favorite Jing Tian), Newt Geiszler, and Mako Mori serving looks. Actors on IMDb are credited as “Shao Tech” and “Liwen Security,” so I gather that she’s in charge of a company working closely with the PPDC. Newt is surely working for her; the NYCC panel mentioned that he’s gone into the private sector.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scrapper, Amara’s homemade Jaeger, gives the PPDC a headache. I love the interior – not quite on the level of del Toro’s “torture machines,” but certainly more interesting than Uprising’s other cockpits.
Tumblr media
Newt in front of a screen displaying another mystery Jaeger.
Tumblr media
The eleven people in this shot (nine cadets plus Jake and Nate) are probably the pilots for the five Jaegers on the site, as Bracer Phoenix has three. Here is the cadet list as best as I can tell, with character names in parenthesis.
Cailee Spaeney (Amara Namani)
Nick E. Tarabay
Shyrley Rodriguez
Levi Meaden (Ilya)
Karan Brar (Suresh)
Lily Ji (Mei Lin)
Ivanna Sakhno (Vik)
Mackenyu (Ryoichi)
Wesley Wong (Ou-Yang Jinhai)
Also, note the SIM POD text. These appeared in Pacific Rim: Tales from the Drift, but not the movie itself. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the footage from the trailer is a simulation fake-out.

Why “Pacific Rim: Uprising” (and other seemingly awesome action movies) failed
So this is coming off a weekend of binge-watching “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,” actually.
Tumblr media
I love almost everything about this movie — the non-linear storytelling, the epic soundtrack, the quick pacing, the awesome fight scene choreography. But there was something off about "King Arthur” that, until I watched this movie review, I couldn’t put my finger on.
It was the two-dimensional characters.
TL;DR: Poorly written characters can ruin any otherwise epic piece of fiction. Take “Pacific Rim,” and its sequel, for example.
With these two movies in mind, here are some ways that we writers can make our characters (and stories) spectacular.
Tumblr media
1. How many characters are in the story?
I don’t think there’s a good rule of thumb for this, but the fewer, the better. Each character in the entourage should...
Have at least one role to play in the story—in “Pacific Rim,” Stacker Pentecost explains what happened since Raleigh Becket left the PPDC, as well as prevents Raleigh and Mako from achieving minor goals. He serves as a source of exposition and conflict.
Have their own motivations—think of Mako Mori’s quest for vengeance and Newt Geiszler’s desire to get up close and personal with a kaiju.
Cause some kind of conflict—Dr. Gottlieb drives Newt to Drift with the kaiju brain (which gives the characters essential intel later on) by basically telling him his plan is stupid. This works because of what we know about Dr. Gottlieb’s and Newt’s characters.
(This video has great tips about efficient vs. inefficient storytelling buried in a review of “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.”)
Tumblr media
2. How are the characters introduced?
A big reason why I felt let down by “Pacific Rim: Uprising” was because of the lack of quality character introductions.
It goes for the jaegers, too. Just compare Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha, and Striker Eureka’s introductions in “Pacific Rim” to Titan Redeemer, Bracer Phoenix, Guardian Bravo, and Saber Athena’s in “Pacific Rim: Uprising.”
Stacker Pentecost (and the film itself) lingers on each jaeger in “Pacific Rim,” allowing the audience to take in the details before moving onto the next one. Amara Namani, who likely knows the “Uprising” jaegers inside and out, doesn’t bother voicing these details that make them unique.
(Side note: That’s why it was confusing or even inconsequential in “Pacific Rim: Uprising” for Bracer Phoenix to show up at the final battle with Titan Redeemer’s Morning Star hand—we didn’t really get that memo at the beginning.)
Tumblr media
3. Can any characters be cut out of the story?
This stems from a too-many-characters-in-the-entourage problem. “Pacific Rim: Uprising” (and “King Arthur: Legend of the Stone”) both suffered because of this.
In “Uprising,” there were nine cadets: Amara, Vik, Jinhai, Suresh, Ilya, Ryoichi, Meilin, Renata, and Tahima. I’m betting you only remember half of them:
Amara built Scrapper and was the second protagonist alongside Jake Pentecost.
Vik provided a majority of the interpersonal conflict.
Jinhai was the one who got Amara settled in and was the one injured when they all snuck into the innards of Obsidian Fury.
Suresh was the "boob job” cadet.
Ilya was the “Trololololo” cadet.
The other four cadets were virtually useless. (The movie’s prequel novel, “Pacific Rim Uprising: Ascension,” doesn’t provide much more background on them, either.)
It doesn’t help that the audience already has about a dozen other characters to keep track of in “Pacific Rim: Uprising.”
What “Pacific Rim” did was keep the side characters to a minimum. It focused on the four pilot teams, plus K-Science, Stacker Pentecost, and Tendo Choi.
Of course, the first movie wasn’t perfect. The Kaidonovskys and Weis were merely there to raise the stakes for the Hansens, Raleigh, and Mako.
So, yeah, all of this is to say that the characters make an action movie (or really any piece of fiction) spectacular. Thanks for reading!

Previously on Pacific Rim 2: Robotic Boogaloo, part 1
Shiny: Spoiler warning. Read at your own risk.
Jake: Gasp!
Nathan and Jules: Honey, this isn't what you think! Wait a minute...
Mako: Smooth move, little brother.
Jake: You better not tell dad about this.
Mako: So I'm busting your sorry ass out of jail again. Would it kill you to be more like dad?
Jake: Yes.
Mako: Well, we'll have your little shenanigan reduced to "community service." You'll return to training cadets immediately. Also, adopt that mechanic girl; I want nephews and nieces and you haven't had a date since you broke up with Nate and Jules at the same time.
Jake: And now I remembered why I left.
Amara: You're an ass and I ha- oooooohhh look at all the Jaegers I wanna ride that one and that one and that one and that one and...
Nathan: Jake.
Jake: Nathan.
Nathan: I've moved on to better things.
Jake: So did I.
Nathan: That's not what your sister told me.
Mako, in her office: I've been shipping those two all my life. If they don't come together and adopt that mechanic girl so I can be Oba-san, there will be hell to pay.
Jake: God, I hate you.
Newt: Guess who's back everyone! Me, the character everyone loves. Kaiju Kaiju Kaiju AllMustDie.
Shao: Nope, nothing suspicious about that. And soon all shall hail me as a heroine after my drones save us all. Muwahahahahahahahahaha. I have an excellent hero laugh. Agree with me, peasant.
Newt: Yeah, sure, whatever. Hey, Herm, guess what, I'm all for the dronification of the Jaegers program.
Hermann: It's like I don't know you anymore!
Nathan: Team, this is our new cadet Amara. We shall be secretly shipping one of you together. Now, she could end up with the weedy kid.
Suresh: I hope new senpai notices me.
Nathan: Or the guy who thinks he's the next Raleigh Becket.
Shirtless Jinhai: Hey girl...
Nathan: Or the new Chuck Hansen, Viktoria. I think we have a winner here.
Ilya: What about me?
Viktoria: What about you?
Mako: Well, Jake, we need you to pilot Gipsy Avenger in Sydney in a few weeks.
Jake: You're being way too blatant about this.
Mako: I won't stop until a new Pentecost has been adopted.
Rogue Jaeger: Zool Motherfuckers.
Mako: That thing... it's... I must warn them. Oh shi-
Jake: Nooooooo!

a crappy review of pacific rim: uprising from a decidedly-not-a-film-critic critic (all below the cut cause spoilers)
first off: JOHN BOYEGA IS THE KING OF SCI FI JOT THAT DOWN
also i loved that they stuck with what the premise was: a knock ‘em down, beat ‘em up robot vs monster movie
granted that, there’s not a lot of plotline or character development but that’s still great cause it leaves plenty of room for us fans
the one thing i disliked was the exposition to summarize the last movie? like there was one moment when newt was talking to gottlieb and he was like ‘you remember when we saved the world?’ and i just gritted my teeth cause it was such poorly written exposition. like write it better. make liwen shao’s line of ‘you and dr. gottlieb were close during the war?’ ‘you and dr. gottlieb figured out how to close the breach during the war, yes? were you close?” and just get rid of all the awkward expo
BUT THAT’S SUCH A SMALL THING and like i said this movie wasn’t made about the writing
also i love the hinted poly????? jake/jules/nate, yes good please and thank you.
also amara is my daughter now and i loved jake’s nickname for her
and next my two biggest complaints! cause i’m pissed about these two points
killing mako was a bold move and made me angry. i feel like it wasn’t entirely useful to the plot????
speaking of killing characters of color: why kill cadat suresh? like c’mon. fuck off
suresh should have survived.
what happened to raleigh? like????? he just disappeared????
also if i see any of you fucking goblins shipping amara (a sixteen year old girl) or any underage cadets (i wasn’t sure on their ages) with any of the adult characters, i will beat you with your own limbs. don’t do it
i fucking love all the new jaegers like GIMME MORE ROBOTS (also give me an updated list of the current jaegers, i can’t keep referring to them how i’ve been in my head)
i still ship gottlieb and newt ‘kay? they better find a way to wrestle newt back from the precursors
i honestly was caught off guard about newt being the bad guy
BUT JAKE PENTECOST
FUCKING JAKE PENTECOST
JAKE FUCKING PENTECOST
HAVE YOU ACCEPTED OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JAKE PENTECOST?
jake walking around in his fucking bathrobe and eating ice cream
nate just accepting that jake is a walking disaster like that
i wanna know more about jake and nate as cadets
i wanna know more about jules
i wanna know more about all the other cadets
in my head mako is still alive and is in love with liwen. okay, they’re lesbians, let’s just all accept that.
also jake and amara’s bond is so pure and good and JUST GIVE ME MORE FRIENDSHIPS LIKE THAT THANK YOU
THEIR SNOW FIGHT
amara and jinhai hugging? lil babies ur adorbs
viktoria and amara being pitted against each other was disappointing tbh but their acceptance of each other at the end, enough to drift? that was good
finally getting to see a three cradle jaeger operating is a #blessing
basically, yes there’s a lot of flaws in pacific rim: uprising but it was a nice addition to pacific rim (barring mako and suresh’s deaths)
