Thinking about cruelty to orphans in Teen Wolf again - specifically how Chris Argent is like "Fuck you, you're a loser with a dead family, kys" right out the gate to Derek when he commits the crime of *checks notes* getting gas in Beacon Hills, and how this is weird given they later establish Chris doesn't think his family killed the Hales on account of they hadn't done anything wrong and didn't deserve to die. So like. What gives, man? Why are you deliberately poking at this poor orphan's tragic backstory like a supervillain?

Anyway I've pondered this and decided that - in pursuit of consistent characterization - the obvious solution is that Chris (smart man, mistakenly believes his family wasn't involved, correctly believes a family of werewolves burning to death wasn't an accident) spent over half a decade believing Laura and Derek murdered their own family and tried to blame the Argents, and a significant part of his post-Kate heel-face turn is grappling with the enormity of that fuck up (and thanking every benevolent force in the universe that thought stayed in his head because holy fuck there would be no "from the bottom of my heart... my bad" strong enough)

I got through season 5 of Teen Wolf. Wow, that entire Bête du Gévaudan storyline was super annoying. Why do that when the film Le Pacte des Loups exists?

There’s no point in doing all that if the ridiculous CGI monster doesn’t turn out to be Vincent Cassel. Really.

And you know the writers have seen the movie, why else did it begin in Nouvelle-France? God, I miss Fronsac.

Why do they put on fake French accents? In the fictional world, they are all French, in France, wouldn’t they be speaking French to each other? Sure, we would hear it in English because that’s how television works (Tardis effect!), but with normal accents.

I did have a moment when I complained that they didn’t cast JR Bourne as Henri Argent, but then I remembered that’s his daughter. That would have been weird.

Also: could they not afford a French dialogue coach? JR, sir, do schools in Toronto not offer French classes? Mr Hogan, IMDb tells me you studied at the National Theatre School of Canada, that’s here in Montreal, and you picked up no French st all? I had to learn your language in high school, you could at least have learned enough to sound like you have heard spoken French before.

And why is Gerard here? Why is Gerard still here in the end-of-season-we-think-we-might-get-cancelled-so-here’s-us-tying-up-all-the-loose-relationship-threads montage? Chris. Come on, Chris. Just kill him. Please.

Could they not give Mason a last name? I would have thought for that to work, Lydia would have had to use his full name, including middle name and childhood nickname.

I will also need details of Corinne and Talia’s interactions. Did Talia force her to carry a pregnancy to term, then erase Peter’s memory for… reasons? What are those reasons? Peter should have been here for all that.

Where did this idea that Chris Argent is the one Argent who cares about the code come from? He's just as bad as his wife, who wants to murder Scott for existing.

I feel like I have a completely different understanding of this that everyone else does. I like him BECAUSE he's a weak-willed jellyfish of a man. He follows orders, there's not much kindness left in him and it's only directed at his daughter. He's a liar who enjoys tormenting teenagers - he was willing to kill Derek and Scott even though he knew they hadn't killed anyone.

The entire point of the Argents is this corrupt family structure. "Women are leaders" they say, as they lie and gaslight Allison. "We don't kill innocents" they say, while shooting Derek and Scott for being outside at night.

How many times did they get it wrong and kill humans? We'll never know because of course they would just cover up the evidence. They were taking potshots at Scott and Derek and didn't even know WHO they were shooting at.

Literally none of them follow the code. They manipulated Allison into setting it aside. The code is bullshit.

what do i think of chris argent?

chris argent is compelling to me because he's not really that good of a person. he has deluded himself into thinking he is.

the indoctrination amongst hunters runs very, very deep. especially with the argents. he never fully becomes deprogrammed. gerard argent deeply damaged both of his children and that is the point. there is no happy ending for the argent family.

kate was gerard's golden child because kate was full tilt sociopathic and enjoyed killing. chris was the lesser of the two in gerard's eyes. we know that while chris did gerard's biding he hadn't been in contact with allison since she was three years old at the time of kate's "death". that tells you chris knew his father's influence was dangerous and corrupting. yet he still let it happen and watched allison be manipulated by his father and become like kate.

three children ended up in his murder and torture basement and the only one i can see him not fully knowing about is stiles because that was gerard's little game. he knew about erica and boyd, he knew what was being done to them and he allowed it. they hadn't done anything to anyone and again they were children. the same age as his daughter. her own classmates. trussed up in his basement.

his intimidates stiles, scott, jackson and derek more than once. people who hadn't done anything wrong. scott, jackson and stiles are all children.

chris also knew full well who and what kate was. he was in denial about it and ignored it. chris isn't a stupid man and i thought it was pretty clear throughout season 1 he had suspicions about kate so he's not even surprised when confronted about it code breaker. he's just disappointed.

he clings to the code because it gives him cover. it gives him a convenient excuse. he can wrap himself up in the code and declare himself a good hunter, not like the others, not like his father and sister when he is. the code is his self-delusion.

he changes because allison died and his code becomes the memory of his daughter. his shitty family and his lack of backbone led down a path that eventually led to her death.

yes allison's decision that night was her own but it was also reckless. why was the archer on the ground? why wasn't she high up like she'd been wise enough to do in frayed or in alpha pact? allison was desperate not only to save lydia but also to prove herself good and make up for her mistakes.

and even when he begins to change it's often conditional.

chris is an interesting character. i like him a lot actually but he's a fucked up person who makes many questionable decisions thought-out the series. he only looks good because gerard and kate are more terrible.

WORST TAKE OF THE CENTURY

So far ...

Scott McCall was a bad friend to Stiles because he was so busy trying to keep people from killing each other that he sometimes helped people other than Stiles, disagreed with Stiles's arguments, and only managed to save Stiles at the last moment.

Why is this a bad take?

He was just doing what Stiles told him to do in Heart Monitor (1x06): "Look, you have something, Scott. Okay? Whether you want it or not, you can do things that nobody else can do. So that means you don't have a choice anymore. It means you have to do something."

List of people he put above following Stiles around like a puppy: Allison Argent, Derek Hale, Lydia Martin, Jackson Whittemore, Isaac Lahey, Sheriff Stilinski, Melissa McCall, and, for the love of God, Peter Hale.

List of episodes where if Scott had always did everything that Stiles had told him, Stiles or the Sheriff would be dead: Night School, The Overlooked, The Divine Move, and The Last Chimera.

Number of times Derek mentioned Stiles in the last two episodes of Season 2: zero.

Number of times Derek sent a beta to beat Stiles up in Season 2: two.

Number of times Scott ditched Allison to take care or listen to Stiles: two.

I could go on, and contrary to the pendantic whiners, that doesn't mean I think Scott doesn't have flaws. I've talked about his flaws. But it's 2024, and the idea that since Scott paid attention to his transformation into a werewolf in Season 1 or stopping the Hale-Argent feud in Season 2 or the Alpha Pact in Season 3A rather than putting all his attention on Stiles, it makes him a bad friend still hangs around this fandom like Flat-Earther Theory, while simultaneously the fact that Scott never even considered putting other people's lives ahead of Stiles's in Season 3B or 6A has vanished as thoroughly as Donald Trump's integrity. Scott being so busy saving people from dying that he doesn't save Stiles quickly enough does not make him a bad friend, unless you're a coked-up middle schooler ... or a Sterek shipper.

Starting off with everyone's largest concerns, the fate of the refugees and the citizens in Khanate occupied territories. In times of war, there are few things that lift the spirits, but the efforts of our PEACE comrades and friends in the Galactic Community, the lives of hundreds of thousands of refugees are now at least a little bit safer. Escorted out of the conflict zones, and bound to new worlds with homes and welcoming communities awaiting them. Though nothing can give back what was taken, the Union is dedicated to righting these wrongs.

However, we have received a disturbing report that the occupied territories are required to pay the Khans a "tithe of levies", meaning that everyday civilians are being conscripted into service aboard Khanate vessels. It effectively means our people are being held hostage aboard Khanate ships and forced to fight against us. As you can imagine, dear friends... this is an ethical problem in more ways than one.

We go now to ex-MP Martial Sher An-Zecetesh, who is willing to speak to to UNC about the recent battles going on across Union Space. Martial Sher?

"Greetings, comrade Bluglakkag. Unfortunately the state of the war is not what we'd like to see, the contemptable Khans have all but taken the Northern Quadrant, as well as portions of the Western Quadrant. The most recent battles, The Battle of the Aidon System and the Battle of the Sheng System both ended in a Union defeat. But the worst of these was in Aidon."

What exactly happened there, Martial Sher?

"You'll understand I can't share the specifics of the weapons or tactics used or the finer details for the sake of the IUCCM and our allies. But I will share what I can. The battle started off with three Interstellar Guard fleets and the local star base under assault by two Twin Star Sects - Sects is what the Khans call their fleets - and four Black Banner Sects. Our allies in PEACE, the @vegvasignal, the @elepharchy, and the Bzadi arrived in the system to assist and rescue our diligent fleets. Most of the Sects ignored our allies, initially, choosing instead to continue engaging our fleets. One Sect, however, split to engage SMOOCH, though they would eventually find themselves in an Elepharchic trap from which they could not escape. Meanwhile, our Vegvian allies used their unique talents to impede the Sects and strengthen their allies made efficient use of their artillery to bombard the foes from a distance. Then of course, our Bzadi allies, who were undetected by the Sects and moved into a strategic position to surprise the enemy with a full weapon assault."

It sounds like it started well, sir.

"Indeed, and it continued to go well as the battle continued, piece by piece our fleets and those of our allies were able to whittle down the shields of multiple Khanate Sects, until the point where one fled combat and another initiated a self-destructive ramming action against a fleet of ours. There were survivors of that reckless and frankly insane action, but enough fell that the fleet in question had no choice but to retreat. At this point, the Sects had all received some damage, ranging from severe to minor, whilst our allies had taken little from their assaults. I can confidently say that if the battle had continued like this, it would have been a PEACE victory."

What changed, Martial Sher, sir?

Martial Sher An-Zecetesh turned to the camera and flicked her fins.

"The Pact. I can confirm that three fleets of Argent Pact design appeared in the system and immediately engaged the remaining Union fleets and one of our Vegvian allies at their flanks. One of our fleets was destroyed in this surprise attack, and the other was forced into stealth. The balance of power drastically shifted and a full retreat was in order."

Oh my! What has the Galactic Community said about this, sir?

"The report just came in moments ago. Parliament's been informed and likely considering what instructions to give to our representative of the GUN before informing them, as it seems that the Pact has declared war on us."

"Yes, I am. And I don't care. The people should know the facts. Know that the Parliament has been holding the military back! We could be fighting harder! But instead our best assets ar-"

The Democratic State of Grand Bavia was built on several principles, those of freedom, democracy and the right to allow others to pursue their own paths in this galaxy. It came to my attention a few weeks ago that the Wano Revolutionary Republic was formed on a lie, that of it being a democratic nation. The BIIS declared the WRR a threat to the Democratic State and its ideas. However the information we’ve come across is more damning of the Revolution as a concept than anything else.

The Wano Revolutionary Republic was formed after a supposed referendum to leave the Kingdom of Evrocia and that they’d embrace the Revolution as a united nation. However the BIIS came across information that showed the Dharan Revolutionary Republic had suppressed votes from the territory of New Ruzia which actually voted to join the Bavian Nation and our greater cause for democracy and freedom.

We approached the Wano Government about this privately, raised our concerns and then the bombing incident happened. The Wano are actively hiding their authoritarian ways and preventing democracy from taking its course.

We appealed for re admittance to the Galactic Community on these grounds and the idea that everyone should be heard in the galaxy, regardless of their government. However they took the Wano’s side and made the greater galaxy think we’re the bad guys here.

Therefore the Wano Revolutionary Republic, the Dharan Revolutionary Republic, Alari Commonwealth, Argent Pact, and many others have chosen empire over freedom, something we will not stand for. That is why I have taken action as President of Grand Bavia, and as president I can announce a historic piece of action from this galaxy, one that is decisive.

The DSGB formally declares war against the Wano Revolutionary Republic with two main goals in mind, annex New Ruzia as was their wishes in the Wano Independence Referendum, and to dismantle the Wano Revolutionary Republic.

The Revolution is a threat to everyone in the Greater Bavian Region and it is clear to us all that it must be limited to the Dharan states. The Revolution was built on a lie that I had died, however I can assure the galaxy that while I live we will, Grand Bavia will fight for democracy, no matter the cost.”

Hi there! You’ve never steered me wrong in advice on monster tactics, I’m hoping you can do the same again now.

I’m making a two-continent realm for my next big D&D game for my players to explore. One country is based loosely on Cheliax of the Inner Sea - when a massive Undead threat rose in the north, and began an invasion against it, Iabus (Cheliax 2.0) made a pact with Hell for troops to defend it as long as it was officially recognised. My question is, what kind of return would Hell expect outside of souls? What did it get from Cheliax, and how would I organise it in a way that works?

Souls. Souls, souls, and more souls. Hell wants souls more than anything else in the universe. More souls, more reach, more control of the cosmos. Cheliax in Golarion is defined by it's tyranny and it's bottomless demand for territory and reach, and when military might doesn't get them what they want, they turn to law, strangling what they can with bureaucracy and tyrannical rule until whole nations have no choice but to bend to their will. All so Hell can take it's pick of enslaved souls sacrificed to it.

However, each Archdevil wants something different, and depending on which one the country's leader has pledged itself to, there may be different demands at play.

Asmodeus is the one Cheliax is bound to in canon, and the pride of the Prince of Darkness shines in every respect. He doesn't just want Cheliax to grow, he wants it to rule in every sense of the word. He wants it to be a towering example of what the world would look like under his fist: efficient, controlled, and perfect.... At the expense of all forms of freedom and the complete subjugation of all but a specific, narrow ruling class. It's not enough that Cheliax feeds Hell, it must also feed Asmo's ego. It must literally be Hell on earth. Baalzebul, ever eager to please his creator, would demand roughly the same. Dispater, ever eager to make Dis 2, would probably work similarly as well.

If you want to know what a city in Belial's thrall may look like, it'd probably be similar to Nex. Flesh forges, construct districts, monster factories of every shape and description...

Moloch would demand military might. Cheliax has an incredible military as it is, but Moloch would demand focus on it. A complete wartime economy 24/7. Citizens that never know and never will know a time of peace. Constant expansion through conquest. Mandatory drafts. Mandatory training in weapons, armor, magic, all forms of crafting. Regular, hideous sacrifices on giant pyres. A leader who is equal parts general, warrior, and king.

Geryon would have what Golarion has had and will likely continue to have for the foreseeable future: a mageocracy. Ordered and bound to Hell's will, all mages must submit themselves to the kingdom's laws, all must do as the leader commands. All must give themselves to the city, one way or another. The average citizen may live a life as normal as any dictatorship allows, but at any time, they may be taken away by the city's cabal, because something within them is the perfect ingredient for their next spell. Conquest is secondary to discovery; a nation under Geryon may seem downright neighborly to the surrounds... provided they have no lore or magical secrets the Serpent wants. That's when demands are made. That's when submission is demanded.

The less said about a city in Barbatos' pocket, the better.

And of course, Mammon's military would pale in comparison to his banking system. I loathe to bring up a show I've never watched to completion and ever will so don't recommend I do, but anyone familiar with the Iron Bank from Game of Thrones had a head start on figuring out exactly how a city in the Argent Prince's grip would function.

This session we return to Aerith, Brucey, and Ramiel exploring the remainder of the Silken Squall. They still have a few stamps to collect for their book, and a few more shops to visit.

First stop is the pop-up tavern Cup Full of Clouds, where they pause for the afternoon and get a stamp from Misty the barkeep. While enjoying their cocktails, they spy Aloysia going into Argent Light. They follow and see her (unsuccessfully) trying to sell jewellery stolen from the Cael Morrow dig team, some of it tinged with Ruidium. The trio decide to to keep this to themselves for now, and instead head to their next stamp.

They realise one of the stamps might reference Bell (the robot helper at the stamp rally), and her love for juggling. And after a cheery meeting, they indeed have another stamp. A quick stop in at Whistling Leaves, a herb and spices shop, and a return to see Hurric at Fresh Breath, the potion shop, and they have completed their stamp book.

Guston is happy to hear they completed their challenge, but demands they at least pay the entry fee now (since they found their book elsewhere), and he will make them their Talisman prize in the morning.

The next day the trio return to the Silken Squall for some last minute favours, and to collect their Talisman of Temporal Salvation from Guston. Then they decide to follow up on the quest of Cloud, the assistant at Fresh Breath, to find Ank'Harel Lapus gems.

Ank'Harel's Aluvium District is both a place of mineral wealth and culture, so this is where the trio decide to search. While there, they meet Cassius, a Bugbear priest of the Wildmother, who they previously had seen but not properly met, after the Barghest attack a few days prior. Cassius tells the group that a mining tunnel nearby has been taken over by a band of savage Hobgoblins from the desert beyond the city. The workers of the Sa'irah Mines want to hire mercenaries to hunt and slay the Hobgoblins, but Cassius pleas for the party to take a more peaceful approach.

Goblins and their kin have ancestrally been afflicted by the Curse of Strife, an affliction of the mind from the God Bane when he created them. Bane's curse means that Goblinkin are naturally savage and cruel creatures, spreading strife and chaos. But the Curse can be lifted through love and kindness, and most goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears now live in cities peacefully along other folk. Cassius wants the party to subdue the Hobgoblin company through non-lethal means, so he and his fellow priests may take them to his temple and cure them of their curse.

Ramiel, who has been serving the god Bane for a while now, had never heard of this curse. His family had been threatened by a clan of Hobgoblins before Bane came to him to make a pact. Was Ramiel tricked into this pact? Aerith and Brucey agree to try and subdue, not kill the Hobgoblins, and Ramiel agrees to pull his sword slashes, unless he has no choice.

Signs of recent excavation and the sounds of pick axes hitting stone hint at some greater purpose to their presence in the tunnels. But the first few distracted Hobgoblins they find are easily snuck up on and knocked out. Brucey and Ramiel find some difficulty dealing with the Hobgobs without magic, but Aerith and her fists thrive. The trio make sure to bind each group of hobgobs as they go.

Towards the end of the tunnel, the party manage to surprise KO the biggest and strongest of the Hobgoblins before he swings his sword once. But while they're cleaning up, their true leader, a Hobgoblin Mage, attacks from the shadows, with two monk Hobgobs pincering from the other side. The party's attention is divided and this final battle is tough, but Aerith, Ramiel, and Brucey persevere.

The trio emerge from the mine to inform the workers and Cassius that the Hobgoblins have been subdued and bound, and they were able to slay an earth elemental on their way out. Cassius and his clergy work to take the Hobgoblins back to his temple. The miners let the party keep what they can carry in Ank'Harel Lapus as payment, which they take back to Cloud on the Silken Squall to help complete his mixture. They are paid handsomely for their effort.

After their adventures with the Silken Squall, Aerith, Ramiel, and Brucey have a week of downtime to relax and pursue their interests.

They inform the Cobalt Soul of seeing Aloysia on the Silken Squall. Brucey reads a magic tome that was a reward from the Silken Squall's bookshop, making him wiser. Ramiel visits Cassius's temple to see if the hobgoblins can indeed be cured of their curse. Aerith hones her mind and body, awakening new power in her Wraps of Dyamak.

Qenik and Vitak Venerables prepare the Artokekoitzai Colosseum for use, for the first time in this Age, The Artokekoitzai has been called. It is a challenge between Queens to resolve a dispute, a substitution for war when diplomacy fails. The opposing hives select their greatest warriors and hunters to compete in the Artokekoitzai Colosseum, the largest arena on Aradas.

In this case, the Zaxatel League and the Xav Empire have used their right to challenge the Ikibat Federation, the Eta-Vet Pact, and the Vur Grand Hive over their deadlock on the issue of the @pactargent, resulting in the compromise of the demand for Juggernaut removal and subsequent Argent-hive departure of Aradas. Although that is the main point of contention, the tensions between the hives have built for some time, and various issues are up for resolution in this Artokekoitzai.

The Zaxatel League states if they achieve victory, the other hives will have to agree to leave spiritual beliefs out of Tribunal affairs in regard to alien-hive interactions. The Aradas Confederacy of Hives and the Xav Empire already agreed to this prior to the calling of Artokekoitzai. Additionally, they demand the territory of Qehiak Island, as they believe the geothermal properties of the island will serve the advancement of Aradas better in their hands.

The Xav Empire states if they achieve victory, the personal xenophobic beliefs of the Vur Grand Hive must not influence their policies and the dispute over the Border Hives will be resolved with Vur submission of the territorial claims.

Though the Zaxatel League and the Xav Empire offered the Confederacy a place by their side in the Artokekoitzai, they refused to take part in the tradition. Calling it "the senseless bloodshed of drones".

Currently the Ikibat Federation, the Vur Grand Hives, and the Eta-Vet Pact are formulating their own demands if they achieve victory, and rumour has it that the Eta-Vet Pact will be making their own claim against the Vur Grand Hives.

This one is excited to actually witness The Artokekoitzai. As the practice was abandoned in the early Industrial Era, the last time such an event occured was when the Zaxatel League was founded, nearly two thousand years ago.

The galaxy has given us many challenges since the birth of our species. From famine and droughts to instability and internal conflict. However today the Kingdom faces its biggest challenge since its establishment, over one thousand five hundred years ago. When our people ascended to the stars under my late fathers, King Poncaro XIX, we welcomed everyone of all species. We were willing to cooperate with everyone.

The war between the DSGB and WRR was not our concern, a war between two states. We decided we'd feed the population of Grand Bavia and help fund their hospitals. We traded with them to ensure their own survival against their government.

The Bavian Democratic State's government is one of tyranny and authoritarianism. People are persecuted each day for their religion and political beliefs.

They arrested my husband, Prince Orenca, because of a note I handed him before meeting President Kuzi. My goal was to secure peace between the two states. My goal was stability. Despite my efforts, I was sent away as they hunted for Orenca.

I regret to this day that I gave him that note that kick started this chain of events. However the decision by the Argent Pact to detain Duchess Qelosa has forced my hand.

I serve you, the people. It is my responsibility to keep you safe and it is that I shall do. Parliament demands war, sending us to a war zone that gets us nothing and I won't allow it. This Kingdom is not going to war.

However it is clear that neutrality cannot be the way forward. That is why I am announcing today that the Kingdom of Evroncia will be severing all diplomatic ties with the DSGB. All trade will be turned around and discontinued.

However I am not finished. Until Duchess Qelosa is returned to this Kingdom, I am suspending Parliament and placing the country under marshal law. For it is my kingdom and I will not allow the Bavians or anyone else to destabilise it.

These actions were in agreement with the Prime Minister who will continue to serve her role, despite our disagreements. This action has not been taken lightly. Once Parliament is regathered, I will allow a free and fair debate on the Kingdom's future in terms of our relationship with the galaxy. However for the sake of saving lives, I cannot allow this to happen.

Heather, I'm in need of your scholarly knowledge here. I know emissaries are meant to assist packs and give advice, but is it actually stated in the show (or somewhere else) that it's also their duty to keep the balance? Because I thought the keeping the balance thing was a more strictly a Druid thing, not necessarily something an emissary really factored in, since the main thing about an emissary is to help protect the pack (if they have a pack) or am I really just butchering (or letting fanon influence me) from what I remember from the show.

oooh an opportunity to talk about emissaries. okay yeah.

i had to do a little bit of research here because as always with teen wolf putting lore together is a puzzle. in short, in the teen wolf universe, emissaries are always druids but not all druids are emissaries.

it's a subclass basically.

we only meet two actual emissaries in the show and they're siblings. alan deaton and marin morrell. they both clearly have their own agendas.

deaton at the start of the show is retired as he was formerly talia hale's emissary and stopped when she died. he came out of retirement to help and assist scott mccall.

marrin morrell is duecalion's emissary. she came to beacon hills and worked as the school's guidance counselor in much the same way the argents worked for the school. she was gathering information on scott and derek. the ferpa laws this woman violated. both lydia and stiles went to see her in an official capacity.

morrell is a curious character. she acts against duecalion several times throughout season 3a. she hires braeden, she warns scott multiple times. in alpha pact she's literally running away from the alphas because she knows they're going to try to off her.

she is likely the one you're thinking of in regards to balance. in alpha pact morrell and the alphas have a salty conversation about how deucalion has always been suspicious about emissaries.

kali brings up braeden and morrell says this:

"i sent her to do what i've always done, maintain balance."

morrell also brings up balance again when we see her in echo house. it's interesting because she attempts to help stiles but tells him basically she'll kill him while deaton goes out of his way to obtain what's needed to subdue the nogitsune. deaton may withhold information and have his own agenda but he is more willing to go above and beyond to keep someone alive.

so while emissaries do help their packs and specifically they advise the alpha as cora tells us in visionary they're usually a secret from the rest of the pack.

deaton often goes off and does his own things as we see a few times thoughout the seasons.

so with everything we see throughout the seasons i would say they act on a higher calling of maintaining a balance which does not always align with either the interests of the pack or the desires of the alpha.

being an emissary is an advisory and consulting position not a bound one.

One of These Things is Not Like the Others

Few things demonstrate to me the ubiquitous racism in the Teen Wolf fandom's treatment of Alan Deaton then the way that in a vast majority of their fanfiction, they have Peter Hale loathe Deaton while simultaneously respecting (if not secretly in love with) Chris Argent.

Peter had a conflict with Deaton for the first and only time during the show in Formality (1x11) when Peter tried to force Deaton to hand Scott over to him. At no other time did Peter attack, criticize or even tease Deaton: not in Visionary (3x08), not in De-Void (3x22), not in Orphaned (4x06). There was never any hint that Peter disliked or distrusted Deaton. The only time that Peter referred to Deaton in a conversation was in Visionary, where he informed Stiles that Deaton gave Talia good advice.

The same cannot be said for Chris Argent, who Peter physically attacked in Code Breaker (1x12); mocked in Fireflies (3x03); fled from in Alpha Pact (3x11); and emotionally tortured and impaled in A Promise to the Dead (4x11). Peter's motivation in Season 1 was getting revenge on the Argents. His point of view in Season 2 was completely focused on Gerard Argent, with whom he was rightfully concerned.

Yet somehow, the mutual violent antagonism between Chris Argent and Peter Hale is somehow frequently transformed into positive feelings between them. I don't have any problem with that, honestly, except when they turn around and have Peter scorn Scott in the strongest possible terms for thinking the True Alpha can respect, like, or trust any Argent. And then, the respect that Peter and Deaton had for each other (in Deaton's case, wary respect - Deaton described Peter's malicious cleverness to Derek in Party Guessed (2x09) in exact detail) is transformed into one-way derision. Weirdly enough though, in these stories, Peter's dislike and distrust is portrayed as understandable, while Deaton's, if he is allowed to pass judgement at all, is seen as all the part of his sinister (and ridiculously fanon) agenda to keep Scott under his thumb and deny Stiles his birthright.

It's mystifying! Until you take into account the fact that Peter and Chris are good-looking white men and Deaton is a good-looking black man. Somehow, that influences fandom into thinking that Peter despised Deaton and held a grudging respect for Chris.
