Potato is a crazy word if you think about it
#almost a palindrome#otato and potatop don't have the same joie de vivre as the noble potato but are winners anyway on account of the symmetry#also the nice round bouba of the otato#disrupted by the p's#wild stuff

I am full speed ahead on the paperback binding train. This weekend's binds - Heal Thyself (Astolat) and isn't a kingdom and palindrome (@garagepaperback).

The details:
I made these with the intention of having a few things to show for myself when I sign up for the FTH bazaar. The typesets are quick and dirty, adapting @citrusses' Affinity files and popping in the particulars of each fic. The covers are designed in Canva, after extensive staring at a google search and trying to figure out what makes a book cover look commercial. They're all legal quartos, which makes for a nice pocket-sized book.
The cover construction itself I'm quite pleased with. They're printed on an inkjet printer (I'm currently abusing a free HP instant ink subscription) on 80lb cardstock and coated with a satin finish laminating sheet. The end result feels under the fingers like something you'd pick up in a bookshop.
The things that went wrong:
I'm still working on my double fan technique. I'm having more success with balancing the block on binder clips rather than transferring it into a press, but for each of these there were a few pages where I needed to go back with a very small paintbrush and a dab of glue.
I love my guillotine. I do. The edges are delightful and crisp, but it does leave an indent on the spine where I squish the book into place. This may be unavoidable.
The grain direction is off. That's actually unavoidable because I don't feel like buying new paper right now.
Sometimes your title is off-center and that's just a thing that happens because math is hard.
For the sake of completeness, here are the back covers:

What I love about this article is its perfect comedic rhythm. It sounds exactly like something from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Like, this could be an excerpt from the Encyclopedia Galactica. The little punch lines rounding out each paragraph..."he has been credited with the invention of the palindrome." Or Monty Python. Stabbing at the platonic ideal of Some Greek Guy You've Never Heard Of.
What really rounds it out is the burst of extreme and unusual cruelty that finishes his life. "For this, Sotades was imprisoned, but he escaped to the city of Caunus, where he was afterwards captured by the admiral Patroclus, shut up in a leaden chest, and thrown into the sea." "2000 years after a man was nailed to a piece of wood for suggesting that people should be nice to each other..."
And the little cherry on top, where some guy, some caricatureish artifact of the callous and absurd process of human history, comes along and names a racist biogeographical explanation for pederasty after him, out of all the infinite possible candidates, for absolutely no discernible reason — that last unasked-for and unanswerable injustice. This article, possibly more than any other I've seen, realizes the dream of Wikipedia. The future is finally here.

Such a fitting song for this episode.

@dignitywhatdignity said regarding this post:
I have it in my head that everyone *knows* Prince Edward ben Gregory and nomadic food writer Zack Rambler are the same guy, but no one says so.
Even better --
So, the Rambler surname is pretty unique and Eddie's brand is strong enough that it's still pretty well known in the 2040s. If Zach wants to go incognito he's going to have to pick another surname.
He could go with Johnson, that's Tully's birth surname, but Zach Johnson isn't that marketable. Nobody knows Ceece's birth surname, she won't tell. So he could go to his other father's side -- Miranda was a Daskaz before she was crowned, but Zach Daskaz looks like some kind of attempt at a palindrome. Michaelis never had a proper surname, Ben Jason is more like an honorific and wouldn't be passed down. But King Jason was just a guy before he was elected. And his surname is perfect -- interesting but not super weird, and a nice way to honor Zach's grandfather.
Zach Michaelis, award-winning travel and food influencer for his innovative web series See You On The Road, will be releasing his first book this fall. Part travel memoir and part cookbook, "King of the Road" details his food-driven ramblings from rural Wales to the seaports of New Zealand, meeting chefs and surfers, artists, fellow vagabonds, royalty, and con men along the way.

“There’s something aesthetically pleasing about the word noon. Its palindromic spelling feels appropriate for the middle of the day, when the sun is directly overhead and the hands on the clock are pointed upward in a straight line. It’s even spelled with letters found more or less in the middle of the alphabet.” (“What Time Is…” par. 1)
Perhaps unfortunately for my argument, this article goes on to explain how the word ‘noon’ originally referred to the ninth hour of the day, that of course being 3 o’clock; because the sun and with it the people rose at six. It is derived from the Latin word for ‘ninth’, ‘nonus’. The word’s meaning apparently shifted during the twelfth century, because of the prayers of monastic orders. The second of three daily prayers would occur at noon, and the time of this prayer eventually became earlier, landing at twelve. This is believed to have been so the monks could break their fast sooner. Of course, this is not universally agreed upon and other theories include shifts in seasonal daylit hours, and European Medieval people’s struggles to have accurate timekeeping.
None of my sources suggest that three o’clock was considered the middle of the day at any point in time, therefore I would like to argue that the word noon did not originally refer to the middle of the day, but eventually, when it was given to the time that is more deserving of that title, came to do so. I believe that the denotation “middle of the day” is something that is both scientifically and culturally awarded, and that for whatever reason the people (however unknowingly) creating the Old/Middle English language believed twelve o’clock to be so. If you wish to create your own cultural norms, by all means go ahead, just remember that the word culture refers to a group, so you’ll need to find some people who agree with you. (Which, hey, maybe you already have, maybe most people agree with you and I’m just being pedantic.)
Anyways um hi, sorry about this, I did in fact make a tumblr account solely to send you this, because the idea of doing so was too funny to me to not. Also, I just discovered that the Oxford English Dictionary website has a pay wall these days and I am DEVASTATED I tell you, devastated. But yeah, I’ll stop, have a good weekend, I love you, I hope your morning spent on public transit hasn’t been too boring.

OFC you’re leaving citations on A TUMBLR ASK OH MY GODDD anyway I do believe I’m starting a cultural shift because everyone I’ve asked so far has NOT said mid-day is noon they’ve ranged from 11-1 to 1-2 (albeit a bit earlier than my 2-3 answer but STILL)
Yknow what fuck it let’s do a poll bb
anyywayyyy everyone say hi to my girlfrienddd give them a nice warm welcome to tumblr <3
