Fort Worth Flatiron Building. Circa 1907. Fort Worth, TX. Photos by Amber Maitrejean.
When the Flatiron was built in 1907, at seven stories, it was the tallest building in Fort Worth and north Texas. It was also the first steel-framed building in Fort Worth and had the state's first elevator in an office building. The building's ornamentation includes panther heads, an homage to Fort Worth's nickname: Panther City.

maybe im redoing my sunny gem au a little. just a smidgen.
lore details below the cut. warning im autistic. i will surely make more
The Gang is a group of Homeworld gems who found themselves settling in Empire City after the war is over and Earth & Homeworld have unified. They own and operate a bar for humans and torment the surrounding cityfolk.
Shamrock Spinel was made to cheer up a neurotic aristocratic Gem (based on Bonnie,) who's companion was shattered in the fight for Earth and she quickly became dependent on him for stability. The moment things shifted on Homeworld & all the subordinate Gems were liberated he ran away to Earth without a second thought despite having no real experience or knowledge about the planet prior.
Panther Jasper never self identifies by his full name anymore because he finds Earth connotations with the color pink to be embarassing. He was also never on Earth during the war but he chooses to wear Crystal Gem insignias so he can steal valor & brag to humans about saving their planet.
Gold & Yellow were made in the same batch, but their Diamond (based on Barbara...) named them seperately because she considers Yellow to be a disappointment and a mistake. They both make the largest effort among the group to pass as human and hate their Gem heritage.
Purple Agate was made early in Pink Diamond's rule to run her army. His defects had him set to be shattered, but Pink found him so amusing she fought to keep him intact, and he was instead sent to watch over a weapons manufacturing facility. His aggressive personality outsizes him physically and he never had a problem maintaining his status, despite his "quirks."

"the US education system didn't teach me about other countries so i didn't realize mexico had modern cities until i was 21" (real reply someone made on a post) is so telling about the general issue with the whole deal about blaming the US education system for everything. like that is just racism. pure, unanalyzed racism and lack of curiosity about the world around you. when people say "unlearn racism and prejudices" this is what they mean--the assumption that mexico hasn't hit the industrial revolution comes from somewhere, and that somewhere is the uncritical acceptance of racist ideas that permeate white america, whether you consider yourself racist or not.
you're right, the US education system does not have required classes that say where major urban centers are, but so what? it betrays an embarrassing lack of curiosity and passivity in your own experience and conception of the world to so freely admit that not only did you never speak to anyone from mexico or think about it hard enough to realize the irrationality of that thought, you passively took in racist ideas about our neighbors and accepted them with ease. did you think all mexicans were involved with drug cartels, too? would you have needed a class in high school to teach you that wasn't true?
so many of the worst example of people saying "but the US education system--" are people using the stilted, slanted historiography the education system perpetuates as an excuse for their own racism. whether that is about mexicans or any other group of nonwhite people that a certain kind of white american believes they could never have conceptualized as full humans without a required high school course on it, a belief they are shockingly willing to admit publicly

Tumblr media
Tupac Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur, was born Alice Faye Williams on January 10, 1947, in Lumberton, North Carolina. She changed her name to Afeni Shakur when she joined the Black Panther Party in the late 1960s. The name "Afeni" is indeed of Yoruba origin, and it means "lover of the people" or "dear one" in the Yoruba language spoken in Nigeria and some other parts of West Africa.
Tumblr media
Afeni Shakur was inspired to adopt the name "Afeni" during her involvement with the Black Panther Party, a revolutionary Black nationalist and socialist organization that sought to address issues of racial injustice and inequality in the United States. The Black Panther Party had connections to various movements and ideologies across the African diaspora, including the Black Power movement and African liberation struggles.
Tumblr media
By taking on the name "Afeni," Tupac's mother was expressing her solidarity with the struggles of oppressed people and her commitment to fighting for social justice and equality. The name change symbolized her dedication to serving her community and advocating for positive change, reflecting the values and principles that were central to her activism and personal beliefs.
