A new player enters the Paprika Discourse!!

Okay so Jonathan never actually says “spicy”, he says “thirsty”.

I just made Paprikàs Csirke for dinner tonight (what Jonathan refers to as Paprika Hendl) because I thought it would be fun what with everything coming up Dracula at the moment.

And maybe it was just the recipe I tried, but although it isn’t very spicy, it is very salty, which has to be said, has left me quite thirsty.

I propose that we have all been blind-sighted by making fun of English people’s lack of spice tolerance (a laudable goal) and failing our basic reading comprehension (less good).

The dish isn’t spicy! It’s salty! It’s thirsty!

(It’s also bloody delicious, Jonathan does not lie, I highly recommend whipping it up and trying it for yourself)

Let’s Settle This Once And For All!

Okay here me out.

My dad is Hungarian, and we have some family in Transylvania. I talked to him about the paprika discourse and he gave me some good insight on it. Sweet paprika is indeed not hot, and it is the paprika used in this traditional dish, but it become so during the 19th century and spread slowly. However, it never really convinced people in transylvania, it is not popular there, because it grows on the plain, and does not grow in the mountain, so they don't use it very much in Transylvania, so it is possible that the dish that Jonathan ate was indeed spicy and he is not just British.

My dad spoke about a cooking book about that, I will ask him which one it is and come back to edit this post then

Some thoughts based on this post.

When I was 18 I studied on England for a semester and did a job interview and worked a test shift at Nando’s, a place that was voted “best restaurant to go on a 1st date” at my dorm, and where you can order a sauce of several different levels of spiceness.

When I worked there, I was informed by the other waitresses that one thing that would happen would be for bros to order the strongest sauce in front of their dates, then pretend to go to the bathroom and actually go after you to ask to change it to the level they actually wanted. *roll eyes*.

So now I’m picturing a modern day Mina who very much knows guys do this. She asks Jonathan out and takes him to Nando’s. The waitress approaches their table and Jonathan...

Asks without hesitation for the weakest sauce. The one recommended for children.

And that’s when Mina knows she got a good one.
